If you're looking for a fun, lively spot with huge margaritas and great vibes, Jose Tequila's absolutely delivers. We came here to celebrate a birthday, and it ended up being one of those meals where everything just hit. First off, those margaritas are no joke. Massive, flavorful, and strong in the best way. Bonus: they do $2 off specialty margs on Mondays, which is dangerous knowledge now that I have it. I went with the Coco Loco Margarita (1800 coconut tequila, coconut milk, triple sec, and sweetened flaked coconut), and WOW. It was creamy, refreshing, and honestly tasted like a tropical vacation. My friends ordered the House Marg, Peach Sangria Marg and the Spicy Pineapple & Cilantro Marg, all were just as impressive. The spicy one had a great kick without being overwhelming, and the peach option was super smooth and fruity. Before we even ordered, the complimentary chips, salsa, and that famous white sauce came out ... and let me tell you, that white sauce is to die for. I could've eaten that all night. For my dinner, I had the asada enchiladas, and I'm still thinking about them. Perfectly cooked grilled steak laid over cheesy enchiladas with verde sauce, plus rice and black beans. I loved that the steak was on top because once I got full, I could still pick at the protein (elite move). My friends got arroz con pollo, carne asada tacos, and the wildest dish on the table ... the El Molcajete. It came out sizzling in a stone bowl loaded with shrimp, beef, chicken, chorizo, cactus, and all the fixings. We all shared bites and it was unreal. We ended the night with the staff singing happy birthday and completely embarrassing my friend with a sombrero and a candle in his shot. Incredible. They are always super friendly too, once you've been a few times. Always the same servers, so you kind of get to know them a little bit. I really wanted to like Jose Tequilas. The building had been transformed into the look of a nice Tex Mex restaurant. It was in the building that had been occupied for many years by one of my favorite seafood restaurants, Croakers. But it was not to be. The interior layout was basically the same with different decor. It had plentiful seating & the same large bar area. We were greeted and taken to a booth promptly. The server took our drink orders quickly, mine being a medium Mojito. When the drink was served it was huge & excellent. I had expected the normal super weak drink served at many similar restaurants. This one was strong & way more than I could drink. If I ever decide to return I know to order a small. There were 4 in our party, two of which already knew what they wanted to order. The server didn't allow much time to look at the large menu. I told her that I needed more time. She instead hovered very near the table watching me. This put an element of stress into what should have been a fun evening out with friends. In addition I like to sip on my drink before ordering. Dinner out should not be a rush to serve, especially when there are enough tables open to seat incoming parties. In my rushed state I asked her about the Carne Asada. I wanted to assure the beef was sliced or shredded Shirt Steak & not served as a large piece of thin meat. She told me it was cubed. So that's what I ordered. Much to my dismay the dish was served with a large thin piece of barely edible beef. I have no idea what cut of beef it could have been since it was tough with lots of fat & gristle. It was hard to cut, even with a steak knife. The refried beans, which I normally love, were covered in such a thick coating of cheese that I had to roll it off to get to the beans. That didn't help much because the beans were so thin & watered down that I could get very little. The Cheese Enchilada, listed as a part of the dish on the menu, was nowhere to be found. The rice was good. So I ate that. the avocado & salad items. Needless to say I won't be returning soon. And I would never order this entree again. 2.5 stars rounded up for the Shore Drive location & awesome cocktails. read more

Best Tex-Mex in Hampton Roads! Wife and I went for Sunday afternoon early dinner. We showed up about 4 and the place was nearly empty, only 1 table occupied. We had chips and salsa while we looked over the menu. The chips were light and fresh outta the fryer hot. Salsa was great- a little heat but not too much. Like Goldilocks' bed it was just right. I had the Burrito Vampiro and she had the chicken quesadilla. Neither of us could eat more than half. Huge serving sizes! The Vampiro is amazing. Portions. Holy moly the portion sizes are so big. I could've eaten three meals off the quesadilla I ordered. A medium margarita frozen was too big for me to consume in one sitting. At 1:20pm 12/23 I called in a pick up order and specifically asked for the lunch menu two orders of chicken and sour cream enchiladas ($11 each) and one dos tacos ($12). I also ordered two Mexican fried ice creams ($7). My husband returned with the food and he was charged $78 so we paid $30 in taxes and fees? The Mexican fried ice cream tortillas were so hard, you could not break them in some places. I wonder how long they sat to get that stale. I feel taken advantage of, and I no longer trust them. I hope they feel it was worth it to lose a customer from a very large family who live close to the restaurant and will no longer frequent there. I will only go to their local competitors from now on. I hail from Arkansas, and there they had a dish called "cielo, mar y tierra" or sky surf and turf. I moved to Washington in 2017 and have been yearning for it since. This place had something similar to it, called Patron Dip, that was no longer on the menu, but the cook made it anyways. That was the start of our culinary experience. Great service plentiful staff, fabulous menu, AWESOME margaritas, amazing salsa! The guacamole Diablo, made fresh, is beautiful and delicious, living up to its name through a variety of hot peppers. Wicked but flavorful so you'll keep going back for more. JT's famous rellenos are incredible! The only problem with this restaurant is the parking. And why is the parking difficult: because there are so many people who have discovered. Amazing, authentic Mexican dining. Be careful with the excellent chips and recommended guacamole because the portions are huge but can't put down because so flavorful. Service was prompt, professional, courteous and helpful with the menu. The Margarita was worth the visit alone (based upon the pack quaint bar). Way beyond those found in most restaurants. The Shore Drive location has the best chips and queso. The chips have an airy, fried like texture and are the best I've ever had. I do wish this location wasn't so loud though. The acoustics weren't the best - at least in the back room where we were sitting - and the tables were a bit cramped. Also, the restaurant and parking lot are situated really close to the main road which, in my opinion, seems dangerous. There should be some kind of barrier between the road and the lot. As someone who has been to 48 states and 9 countries(including Mexico) I can confidently say that Jose Tequilas on shore drive is the greatest Mexican style restaurant on this side of the world, and likely the best ever. The service is shockingly fast, you walk in and you immediately are taken to a table, immediately brought water and chips and two different sauces. And the tempo doesn't stop until you are walking out the door waving goodbye to the workers. I've been to multiple Michelin star restaurants and none of them bring the energy and homeyness that Jose tequila does, while still matching the taste of top tier food. Went here with the family. I had the Miami Vice drink, a mix of pina colada and strawberry daiquiri. I was hoping it was a little more icy, it was too sweet for me, even with ice being added. The Governado tacos were fantastic. The cheese shell and the meat were well done. Husband had a GOAT margarita and he said it was ok. Kiddo had the cheese pizza (I know, right?) but he demolished it and the fries were nice and crispy. The service was good but pushy. I felt like every three min they were coming by asking if we were ready. I appreciate the initiative, it was just overwhelming as we were trying to settle our kiddo. Place wasn't crowded, Olympics were on which was enjoyable. Overall a good experience and I'm sure their nightlife isn't bad. Prices were reasonable for a family of three. read more

Today....Friday....was just the 2nd day it was opened. Super excited! The place is on Shore Drive near Froggies. We were there around 11:30....a little before the possible lunch rush. We were greeted an sat immediately. The place was so clean and new!!!! It was awesome!!! Even the silverware looked like I was the 1st to use it. Our waiter was wonderful!!! Brought us 3 glasses of water. Huge glasses which is so nice....didn't have to ask for refills. We got 3 Monster Margaritas and they were monster and delicious and pretty and I was happy! I think we all ordered off the lunch menu. There were gluten free options. Food came out fast and was delicious. Lots of plates with the fajitas. They also have a mid day menu....kind of like HH....they call it the value menu. Chips and Salsa is brought to the table and the white sauce if you like it. We were checked on repeatedly. And when we left there were a lot of tables filled and they seemed busy. Definitely check them out. A good addition to Shore Drive. Great customer service. Jose Tequilas at Shore Dr! When I heard this place was opening I was actually disappointed the old Croakers wasn't going to be a seafood restaurant but this place did not disappoint!! The portions are HUGE. The service was amazing with all employees helping each other out. The food was fresh and so good. Also the place looks great inside. I came 2 nights in a row - first night w my parents and second night with the family. highly recommend!!! By the way first night we got the fajitas Del Mar night 1 and the Jose's favorite. Night 2 was fish tacos and chicken tenders and a side of rice for the kids. They brought the kids ice cream and a shooter for the adults.
