Stayed in town again but already visited visited Raphael's down the street -- see my review from last week. This time, we tried Jethro's. It's tough to find because it's way up a hill. The parking lot was packed which was a good sign. Walking to the entrance, we could smell the aroma of steak and it made our mouths water. The inside was rustic but in a good way. Very unique. Despite the packed parking lot, there were quite a few empty seating areas. There seemed to be some sort of confusion at the front area because, as were greeted quickly by one server, another server took over and made it seem like a real bother; she stuck us in a dark corner nearest the hostess booth when there seemed to be lots of other seats to choose with better views and not in the darkness. We asked for some recommendations and she seemed totally put off and said everything was good while gazing disinterestedly into the distance ... hmm. Anyhow, the food was awesome: I had chicken parmesean which was hot and flavorful. We also sampled the pepperoni bread which was terrific. My coworker had ribs and shrimp; he said everything was great. Heather showed up once -- about 2/3rds through the meal -- to "see how everything was going and did we save room for dessert?" My coworker was never offered a refill on his beverage and all my dishes -- including the 'roni roll dish, salad dish and entree dish -- sat on the table in front of me until our check arrived. Then it took five minutes to get our bills paid -- despite the register being within about ten feet of our table. We agreed: the food was awesome but Heather should act a little more interested in serving diners. read more

Firstly, I'll say that the view is absolutely amazing, and they have a beautiful outdoor space. Nothing else about the experience was particularly unique. I went over the summer as a party of 6. I got the fish in chips, which was unimpressive. The fish was obviously not housemade, as it had the triangular shape that frozen breaded fish has. Our server continually talked about how she just turned 21 and how much she parties. (I was there with my parents and grandparents, so its not like she was trying to relate to a group of college kids.) Jethro's was fine, but not great. read more

I gave this place a 4 because on a good day it is easily a 5, but on a bad day the food is more like a 3. Many years ago Jethro's was my favorite place to eat; however, several years back they made changes to their 'almost' famous Prospector's Salad. (Please bring back the delicious steak fries and sliced provolone cheese!! The house Italian dressing is still amazing.) Even though my favorite menu item was modified, I still find myself ordering it & also frequently returning for the fried zucchini and provolone cheese bites with marinara sauce. Jethro's does this appetizer better than anyone else around! Light, crispy, & delicious! The Italian Wedding Soup is one of my favorite soups in the area too, just make sure the temp is consistently hot. The free dinner rolls are yummy always served warm and perfectly crusty on the outside and chewy inside, yum! The rib sauce is awesome, but lately the quality of the ribs can be hit or miss. Sometimes they are fall-off-the-bone delicious, other times...not so much. The preparation of your steaks has also declined significantly. I am confident that fixing these two issues alone will send most of those other chains packing! If you are looking for something different in the Altoona area I don't think you will be disappointed. It is certainly worth a try. Hopefully it is a 'hit' kind of day and brings you back again for more. In the sea of chain restaurants Altoona provides, I really want to see this place make small improvements back to where it was a decade or two ago. Your servers always do an incredible job. I am here for work and so I am staying at the Marriott Courtyard and I didn't feel like leaving the hotel so I thought I would give this place a shot since they deliver. I was talking to a very nice lady and she recommended that I try the ribs and chicken combo and so I did. They was no minimum that I had to pay for delivery and no delivery charge at all. The other thing I was very impressed by was when she told me it would take only 20 minutes for delivery - I was shocked! True to her word the guy was knocking at my hotel room a few minutes before the 20 minutes was up. They had everything packed up nicely and food was very hot - the only complaint I would have was that the fries that went with the order were soggy from the bbq sauced on the trip over. The following night I order the Chicken Marsala and it was very good as well but for the money - the ribs and chicken were a better deal. I would strongly recommend them! read more

Stopped in today on a whim, ordered the gnocchi with a Caesar salad. I've never seen croutons like these, homemade from some kind of round bread so each crouton was wedge-shaped. They were delicious, as was the house-made dressing -- just piquant enough without being overpowering. The gnocchi arrived al dente with a stout meatball and a sauce that brought my gram's to mind, although no sauce is as good as any good Italian's gram's. That's just how it is. Prices were very reasonable, service was quick and friendly, portions were just slightly below enormous. Probably gonna eat here again tomorrow. read more

I love this place! It always seems to be busy when we go but we are never in a hurry so we don't mind waiting. The wait staff is friendly so that's a big plus in my book. Mule kickers are so good when your sitting outside on a nice hot day. I also love the variety of beers they have on tap. Check this place out! read more

Was in Altoona for work. Nice spot! Ordered some wings as an appetizer... Very good. Made the mistake of ordering a steak. It was good but I wish I had sampled some of the other foods as my coworkers' dishes looked great. Carrot cake for dessert! Our server was cordial and made sure we had all we needed. read more

Nothing special about this place, apparently known for their wings & ribs. The service was good. Prompt and friendly. But the food was average at best. We were there on a weeknight and the place was all but empty. The fries were cold and the rest of our food was average at best. I was pleased to go to a non-chain restaurant in Altoona. There's different sections of the restaurant with different decor. It was warm so we sat outside on the patio and there was a great view. I got rib fingers and fried zucchini appetizers and both were amazing. For dinner I got the gnocchis and they were great too. I haven't had anything here that wasn't burnt or messed up somehow. They burned my BBQ ribs not once, but twice in the same visit. They were drier than dirt and barely edible. The salad I ordered had dressing slopping all over it, and was disgusting. I tried coming back for Mother's Day. I can understand a long wait given how busy it was, but the wait staff is inept to say the least. I had to flag down a different waiter just to get a drink refill. Since they offered a limited menu, I thought it would taste good. Nope. More dry food and cold sides paired with a sloppy salad. I'm done. Never again! read more

Got here at 5 PM on a Wed. Bar had a fair number if patrons - old school 'steak house'. Asked the bartender/server ( when I'm alone, I will usually eat at the bar). Asked for an IPA, they had Goose & Sculpin - both good, but no locals. Asked what would be her choice for the last meal she could have here & she said the steak penna alfredo/balsamic. It had fresh asparagus, baby mozzarella balls & grilled grape tomatoes with nice slices of med rare steak in a very scant alfredo, PLUS a balsamic glaze - a VERY complex taste, but wonderful. Went here for a birthday dinner with 20 people with a reservation, waited an hour from the original drink order until the next time the server showed up. As we speak the server is still ringing up our order with the included 20% tip for the server. Waited and hour and twenty minutes for refills that were ordered! Do yourself a favor and turn around if you have a party of more than 6 and go elsewhere. read more

Went here last month during a Penn State visit and for an early dinner. We sat in the back outdoor area which offered a great view of the surrounding mountains. We had good service from a very nice waitress. We ordered a variety of things from the menu (fried zucchuni, salads, soups, ribs, cheeseburgers and seafood) and it was all really good. Will definitely return when visiting the campus again. read more

I went in to enjoy a Valentine's meal with my wife. The place had a strong kerosine smell. The prices were on the higher side so I figured the food would be good. I ordered Chicken Marsala. When it came, it wasnt even warm. It had a slimey texture, it made me want to throw up a little. So I just ate some of the mushrooms and spaghetti. As soon as my wife finished we left as quickly as we could because the tip of my tongue was tingling for some reason. My 83-year-old grandmother came in from the cold for a hot lunch and ordered the "steak soup." Oddly, she was expecting soup. Instead she got a bowl of brown gravy with some potatoes in it, no broth, and crucially, no steak. The fries were bad, too, but since she hadn't ordered them, complaints on that point might be a toss up. And the space isn't what you'd call spotless. I come to Altoona from out of town once every two months and always stop by here for lunch. I really like their salads especially the pecan chicken. Their complimentary rolls are delicious and warm. Also the fried zucchini is so yummy. Definitely a great local non-chain lunch spot! read more

I love Jethro's. It is a gem of a restaurant in this city. The building is quiet and out of the way, with many small grottoes for quiet, intimate dining and more open areas if you have a larger and more outgoing party. There's a rather large room in the back that can be booked for parties and a full bar off to the side of the entrance if you're more interested in a bar environment to eat in. There's a part of the restaurant for every party. The food isn't too expensive for the area, but it's always great. I don't think I've ever had a bad meal here, most of which have been excellently cooked steaks. When the restaurant gets busy, you can end up waiting a bit longer than wanted for your food and the staff isn't awesome, but they do the best job they can. read more

We met my cousin for dinner here. I got a NY strip, my boyfriend got the gnocchi, and my cousin got the Prospector's salad, and she and I both had half a mule kicker each. They sneak up on ya - lol. The meal was awesome. Steak was cooked perfectly. I had a bite of the gnocchi and it was awesome - made with fresh ricotta. Can't wait to come back when it's warmer and the patio is open for the view and try some other dishes. read more

The $10.50 menu is awesome. Monday is ribs which is what they are "famous" for. I can imagine it would be great for MNF. Also $1.50 drafts of domestics. The food is very good, well at least the ribs fries and slaw were. Also known for a house cocktails called the mule which I didn't have. There is a huge covered patio with a nice view and the staff is super cool. It's an upscale bar with a quality menu, not just bar food. I'd come back for sure. read more

When I moved into the Altoona area I started looking for a good local restaurant that isn't a national chain. My wife had told me about Jethro's before I moved up but It was about a year later when I tried it. The food is great and the staff is very nice and speedy. I haven't had one bad meal yet. I try to get different food everytime I head up there to see if they're only good with one food group or another. They haven't failed me yet, so I highly recommend you try it. Its a nice place to meet friends for a drink or for a quick meal. read more

I ordered the Broiled Haddock Dinner. The dinner came swimming in butter!!! The haddock portion was small and literally floating in butter sauce. The vegetables were overcooked and smothered in butter. The baked potato was ok. The best part of my meal was the cup of soup I ordered which was clam chowder. The wait staff are very pleasant but do not make up for the almost inedible food. I took my whole meal home and tried to eat it the next day. It was still awful! read more

The place looks ok but the hostess tried to sit us at a dirty table when there was a perfectly clean one right next to our table and then after almost 5 minutes and still standing there waiting for someone we decided to leave. I take my family to this restaurant almost monthly; however after today I will never go back. Aside from the hostess being rude and unprofessional when we walked through the door, my daughter and I sat for over 20 minutes and nobody ever came to take our drink order. We got up and left and nobody ever even acknowledged us as we walked out the door. This is the worse service I've ever experienced. Rude, pushy, ignorant waiters and waitresses made this experience unbearable. Said a half an hour wait time, had us waiting for almost an hour. While waiting waiters and waitresses were literally pushy the people waiting and telling them to more with no please or excuse me. This alone was so rude. How could a company let their waitresses and waiters behave like this to their customers. Everyone around us was feeling the same way because these waiters and waitresses would literally run into you and say in the rudest voice possible "could you move" that's just awful customer service and is the reason I will never go back or recommend for anyone to go again. When we FINALLY got the food, we all ordered salad with steak on it. It was cold and tough. All over an awful experience. They need a new lesson on customer service!! read more

Atmosphere about this restaurant was just okay. We had to wait longer than ususal to get our food and the food was not so good. We has lots of food on the plate but one dish tasted the same as the other. Don't really know what kind of ambiance or style they are trying to set cause they offer a wide variety of food but the decor looks as if someone went to a yard sale and bought a lot of things and nailed them to the wall. Disappointed and will not be returning. This is one of those restaurants that Robert Irvine of the Food Network needs to get a hold of. read more
