Pretty wide discrepancy in service. We come here often, a couple younger self checkout ppl are always really cool and helpful with us (tall blonde guy and brunette gal) along with the bespectacled liquor guy. But one of the butchers always has such a sour attitude and even mislabeled our products today that were buy one get one after pointing it out to him. Other occasions he says the counter is closed when it isn't. And according to him there is NEVER any stock other than what's on the shelf but ONLY when he's on duty, he's just a lazy mf. We usually see him outside smoking, or hanging in the back room for like 19 minutes after we ring the counter bell before he decides to surface...but he's union so he can get away with it Also I concur with other reviews that the deli has been understaffed for years now, always a tedious wait. read more

Avoid if you can. Between the customer service desk and the florist worst attitudes EVER!!! This location has sadly gone downhill.

Good variety. Pretty clean. Many workers to ask where things are. There app doesn't work well inside the store. If you see something that requires an app coupon to be clicked, you have to go ask the way in the front of the store it even step out for it to work. First of all their Floral departments never open. George H was an associate who gave me an incredibly hard time when I tried to help myself. To buy 3 bouquets and combine them into one. This store is absolutely unequipped after 4pm to handle anything but check you out. I asked so many people for help and waited over 35 min for someone to help me until I decided to help myself. Jewel - Osco is not a place that I frequent as an adult BUT I often went their as a child with my Mother. My mother loved jewels and I get why. I was actually on my way to Whole Foods to get a birthday cake for myself and saw Jewels and thought, hey why not just get it from Jewels. Growing up I always got my cakes from Jewels, always. So it was a bit Nostalgic to go there and get my cake. I went inside to look for the bakery and for a second I couldn't find it. I finally saw the bakery hidden in a corner in the back of the store. I'm use to bigger bakeries and bigger freezers, the one at this jewel was tiny in comparison to what I'm use to. I saw a lot of nice cakes but noticed how Expensive they were. The ones I liked were all around $26.99, that's pretty pricey for a pick up and go cake. I tend to get my cakes custom for my birthday from Sams and I don't think I've ever paid that much. I ended up seeing a cake with the sprinkles on the side, which is what I grew up on so I usually want it every year for my bday and was happy they had it. The cake I found was under $17. I purchased my cake and some coconut water. I did self check and I was in and out pretty quick. Can't speak much on the customer service here because the only person I encountered that worked their was at the self checkout and we didn't really interact. p.s *How was the cake you ask?* I enjoyed the outside of the cake, the frosting and the sprinkles but the inside; the actual cake part was just ok. read more

Eric in produce is awful. Multiple times I've had negative interactions with him. He seems very angry and appears not to like his job or customers. Super unfriendly. I've asked him questions where he doesn't even look at me. Today, he was stocking pears. I went next to him to grab some and he stepped away and rolled his eyes. All I said was excuse me. One time I asked him where the Kiwi was and he seemed visibly annoyed. It seems as though he has some emotional issues or suffers from anger management. read more

I tried to purchase 5 items from the clearance shelves, Altoids mints, PBJ Reece's, a bag of Joyride candy (Ryan Trajan),and a bag of dog treats. Each one was on the clearance rack. Each item rang up as full price. Very deceptive waste of my time. I was in the self check out line and had to wait for the cashier each time I needed to void an item. I've never been to this Jewel before. We normally go to Jewel in Hickory Hills Illinois. I need to commend your store and staff. I've never clipped electronic coupons off the app because I didn't know how to use it. A lovely woman with a blondish Bob and bangs, taught me quickly. She was helpful with fruit purchase too. They "theoretically" carry the most groceries & pantry stock that I need on a weekly basis but it's like gambling in Vegas as to whether the products are in stock at the store the day I go. If they are, I run to get a lotto ticket since it's my lucky day. If not, I know that my next 3 hours will be consumed with a scavenger hunt between Pete's, Tony's, and possibly Marianos. I generally take something to drink and munch on while waiting in the check-out line since they usually only have 1 register open. Their self-serve check-out kiosks mis-function so regularly that it takes longer to get through those than wait for 5 people ahead of you to check out. Personally, I wish Dominicks was back!!! Never found a "home" since they went out of business. read more

Here is an average day at the Countryside Jewel location, a place I once visited daily but will not be returning to. Upon entering, your first question will be "where are the baskets?" Not at the front of the store, where they should be. But instead at the exit, where the employees let them pile up, only rarely redistributing them. After that detour, you'll next begin questioning "Why is the produce department full of smoke? And why does it smell of fried chicken at 7:30 am?" That would be because the employees never change the grease in the deep fryer. So now their days-old fruit is not only rotten but smells like old chicken grease. Yum! Finally, you'll go shopping for the things on your list. Dog food: They no longer carry your Purina that literally every other grocery store sells. Frozen Pizza: The Newman's tag is just a mirage, never to actually be stocked. Black Cold Brew Coffee: Only sweetened coffee at the Jewel. So you leave, happy to have bought nothing because all the lanes of the self checkout aren't open for some unknown reason and the one actual checkout has a long line. read more

So albeit I'm a bit biased compared to my "home Jewel," this Jewel still deserves at least 4 stars. They have a bulk food section! This alone has me coming back for more, as not all Jewels have this feature. If you have a minor craving for a small bag of chocolate covered pretzels, this is the place. I also like the fact that this Jewel has many clearance items to choose from. Especially when these items include vegetarian items. Score! They even used to have a small clearance section near the back that had boxes of Kodiak pancakes for $1 per box. What a deal! Their overall organic produce leaves more to be wanted for, but beggars can't be choosers. Their produce in general tends to also be hit or miss. Last week they were out of a lot of produce. Most likely due to the holiday, but no excuses! I also don't feel staff there are very friendly. One occurrence included the most bitter, angry old man I'd ever encountered! I still like this Jewel, especially when I'm assigned to the hospital down the street. It has the basics I need and at reasonable prices if one shops wisely. read more

The absolute worst store, I've ever been! The deli!! Ughh. Why. On a Sunday is there only one person working?? More than 10 people waiting in line With over a 30-60 min wait in a line as the person working is the absolute slowest employee I've ever seen move!! And if they're out of chicken at the deli, they wait until you ask for it to drop it in and cook it... so you wait another 20-30 for it to cook. If you're a black person, expect to be "discreetly" followed (thanks, older female employee with white hair, I noticed you) or just flat out not acknowledged. I greeted and thanked both the cashier and bagger as I checked out, and neither said a single word. It's one thing to not see anyone else that looks like you as you shop, but another to find these not-so-micro aggressions still being carried out in 2023. The store nice it is clean and everything is quite organized on each department. Their produce is all fresh as well as their meats. They got pretty much everything that you wanted on your groceries and the prices are fair and reasonable a bit cheaper and I even saw a few items that are on sale. I only have a few items in my cart because I just stopped by to buy something since, I do not really live around the area. I only have a few things on my cart but the checkout line is long and it is moving slowly. I waited for a long while until my turn. I was a bit frustrated but the good thing is that the staff in the checkout is nice and friendly. The stores products are great but they are a bit lacking on their service but seriously I would probably choose to go here for my groceries if I live around here for the store's good quality products and definitely the prices. read more

Boars head is the only thing that I come for but the deli counter is painful. There are some nice women that make it tolerable- but there is at least one that would be better served in a department with less customer contact. I've been going to this Jewel for 5 years. Everything is fine except for the flower department. The lady who works there is extremely rude and always acts like customers are an inconvenience to her because she has so many other tasks to complete. Last time I went there I wanted to order some flowers for a party and she actually yelled at me in reply to my questions. My husband had a similar experience when he tried to get a bouquet. I did complain to the manager of the store who apologized and said he will talk to her. I hope things will change because of that. read more

Again I have gone to this store looking for a fresh loaf of baked bread. Why do I do this to myself. They are always out of bread at dinner time. Why? Why? If you know you are out of bread because it sells out, why wouldn't you make more? Are you not in the business of selling things? How can you sell what you do not have? I have spoken with a number of managers at this location about this problem, being out of bread. They always promise that they will make sure enough bread is baked in the future. I ordered drive up. I explicitly stated that I wanted no substitutions if they were out of stock. They gave me spring water instead of distilled water that I can't use in my bottle sterilizer, milk that I can't drink, and chocolate frosting instead of vanilla. Despite this being their mistake, they refuse to give me a refund unless I bring it to the store, which is rich considering this is their mistake and I shouldn't have to drag an infant into a snowstorm for their mistake. I'm not even sure how I'm supposed to carry bags of groceries and a baby into the store anyway. It's clear they just want to scam money out of people. Go elsewhere for your groceries. read more

Premium prices, average food, marginal service. Let's take a tour, department by department. First stop, Bakery. $5 for 4 brownies? Really. I can get BC Brownie Mix for $1, frosting for $1.25, add a couple eggs for 20¢, and 10¢ worth of oil for a whole tray of them, so less than half the price for more product. Substitute mayo for the oil and have even better brownies (do NOT use miracle whip). BTW- did you know that the "fresh baked" breads at many local stores is actually jobbed-in as ready-to-bake dough by Turano? Yup. Next stop, produce. The suits have struck again. Somehow, when they get an idea - no matter how inane- they will defend it to their dying day. If I can even thread my way through the aisles in the produce section, it's a victory for me. "Corporate" (so they tell me) had to put those obnoxious boxes of impulse items in front of the produce cases, making it hard for many short or elderly people to even reach the produce. They may have a price leader or two, so just skim the sales and move on. Next up? Organics. It doesn't matter into what category the food should go, if it's "Organic", it goes in the Organic section - well sort of, except for the exceptions (poor grammar is deliberate). Mariano is famous for this as well, but let's save that for another review. I can actually travel south to Hickory Hills to FAIRPLAY FOODS, east of LaGrange Road on 95th- 6 miles for me- shop and return in about the same amount of time going to Jewel and trying to find where individual items are located. Sidebar: I've Special Ordered items at Fairplay and the Department Manager or the Store Manager (in the DM's absence) has called me up to let me know the food has arrived. Just sayin'....... But I digress. Meat department. The meat is fairly decent here, I will admit that, but for what they charge, it SHOULD be. But, watch out for those sales. Tyson whole chickens ON SALE for 69¢ a pound. Are they there? Nope. Does anyone even know they are on sale? Nope, or at least they are doing a good job of faking brain death. Recently they had a 3# "chub" of 73/27% beef marked down to $2.99 from nearly $10! So I got that, cut it with some TVP to bring up the protein, and will use that for Hamburger Helper or other pan-fried dishes to hold my protein costs at $1.25 a pound! Packaged goods. When the manufacturers have a sale, it's typically area- if not nation- wide. So, learn what the lowest price on something is and wait for that one week (in the 13-week cycles of most food stores) and then stock up on that item and it's storable, and if you have the room to store the items. That clearance rack in the back by the milk cooler. Good luck with that. Their "clearance prices" are typically higher than the regular price (which I wouldn't even consider paying), yet alone a sale price, IF you can find a tag for the item you want. Shopping in the evening? Forgetaboutit, unless you are actually a parkour champion and can dodge pallets already being set out for the late night restock crew. Plus, the produce will be gone or almost so. Customer service. IF someone is at the Service Desk, Jewel IS very quick to give refunds and replacements, I will admit that. But, wouldn't it be much nicer to get SS bread that doesn't get moldy within two days in the first place, then to have to waste time to get a replacement ? Yeah, somehow I THOUGHT you'd agree. It's a defense mechanism, as far as I can figure. They don't want to get a bad rep, so they just issue R&R to shut us up. sigh So, I will continue to skim the sales as I make the rounds amongst my six stores a week, and use Jewel for that one stray item that I just can't seem to find elsewhere. read more

This is my favorite Jewel in the area. We live closer to the La Grange Park location but that one is always so crowded. I love that this Jewel is roomy and offers so much. I've had a great experience with the nice staff. For example, the deli workers are very friendly. To be honest, I prefer smaller grocery shops like Trader Joe's but this is a great Jewel location. My only complaint is I wish they had a larger organic produce section. read more

I have discovered a love of dannon light and fit Greek yogurt blends- caramel macchiato, strawberry cheesecake, and chocolate mixes, but they are impossible to find!! I think part of what you pay for at Jewel is rude service and moldy food. The Cashiers and Guest Service workers are all very anti-customer service. It's like it's a problem that customers show up to buy food. The managers also help foster this attitude. I'm just not sure who trained these people on customer service, but they also did a bad job. Oh boy! One of the filthiest Jewel-Osco I have been in. The conveyor belts look like they haven't been cleaned in years. I placed my food carefully so that it would not get wet from the puddles of liquid deposited by other food. Possibly raw meet juice? Then the cashier knocked it all down dragging my food all over the liquid. I responded I was trying not to get it wet. His excuse was I need to reach it. No apology for my concern of cross contamination. As if the conveyor belts are miles wide and can't be reached by an average size man. The bathrooms look like third world country bathrooms. Yuk!
