Subject: Formal Complaint: Professional Misconduct by Store Manager at Elmhurst Location (Store #3182) To Jewel-Osco Customer Care and Corporate Leadership, I am contacting you to report an ongoing issue regarding unprofessional management behavior at your Elmhurst location (153 S. Schiller St., Elmhurst, IL). As a regular customer, I believe that employee disciplinary actions should be handled with discretion and respect. Unfortunately, I have witnessed a female store manager publicly berating employees on two separate occasions, which completely ruined my shopping experience. Incident 1: Monday, July 6, 2026 While waiting in the checkout line, I witnessed this manager speaking in a very loud, aggressive, and unprofessional tone to a young male employee. She was shouting that she was the manager, that "what she says goes," and told him she did not want to see him outside anymore. Incident 2: June 2026 Last month, I witnessed the same manager shouting down a grocery aisle at an employee, loudly warning them that they "better not be on the telephone." While I understand that employees require guidance and correction, doing so publicly in a loud, demeaning manner is entirely inappropriate. Constructive criticism and disciplinary actions should be conducted privately, not in front of a store full of customers. This behavior creates a hostile atmosphere and reflects poorly on the Jewel-Osco brand. I request that corporate leadership look into this matter and ensure this manager is coached on professional leadership practices. If this disruptive behavior is not addressed, I will be forced to take my business elsewhere and escalate this matter further. Unprofessional a lot of expired things and would rather talk to each other then help guests

Store needs to be kept cleaner inside and out. Somebody especially needs to occasionally sweep up the debris in the parking lot. Inside store is passably clean but stinks at all times of fried chicken. I hate smelling greasy after I finish shopping. There are a few employees, namely John and Brendan, who offer excellent customer service; they are friendly and polite always; others could take lessons from them. Maybe it's because I grew up in this area, but the service here seems friendly. I wasn't even a little concerned that when I sent my husband in (to buy gluten-free refrigerated cookie dough and the very specific wet cat food that our 10 year old male currently prefers) that he would wander the aisles in confusion-- someone will always help. I wanted to love this place, really-- it is literally 3 blocks away from my house. Unfortunately, every time I head back to my car, I'm irritated. 1) There are 2 common items I regularly buy (or try to buy) from here once or twice a week. 8 of 10 times, the slot for the item, JUST THAT flavor or brand, is empty. This has been happening for years. You have zero chocolate and 56 strawberry on the shelf. Every week. Like they are using an abacus to calculate reorder levels. 2) It's great to see this location employs intellectually disabled teens in the bagging area. But back home I often find items are smashed, leaking, or destroyed. In one instance, the bagger was literally slamming the food into the bag HARD--he appeared very angry. But the onus is not on him-- is it insufficient traning? Or, failing that, perhaps the supervisors can supervise instead of gabbing together in the dark back corner behind the customer service area. In the case of the overenthusiastic bagger, 2 supervisors walked right by us, and just kept s l o w l y strolling on by. 3) When you need help-- particularly at the self-checkout, three of the supervisors don't make eye contact with the customers. They don't look at the area and you and your strobing light EVEN IF YOU WALK OVER AND ARE STANDING RIGHT IN FRONT OF THEM. Once, for fun, I stood there to see how long it would take for one of the three to acknowledge my presence. At the 4-minute mark I finally interrupted and asked for help. In the competing location north of here, it's the opposite. The staff proactively asks if help is needed every time I visit. But I usually do not need help. Maybe because, in part, because they place orders based on demand. 4) During the post-covid inflation crisis, virtually overnight Jewel drastically increased prices, in some case DOUBLING them. Neighboring stores did not price gouge to take advantage of the crisis; their prices increased as the inflationary rate (and their cost) increased. Example: Sale sign at Jewel: SAVE NOW! Save $ .50 on Cheerios! Regular price is $ 8.99/box. Below, in small print: Must buy multiples of 5. If you look closer it is $ .50 is for 5 boxes, a savings of a whopping $ .10 each. Although the competitor to the north is/was considered pricier, I've found prices for some (identical) items are LOWER to the north. One final example: Jewel: Fresh grapefruit juice ($ 8.99) is usually out of stock. ME: "Do you guys' plan on restocking the grapefruit juice any time soon?" RESPONSE: "The guy didn't show up today/is on vacation/quit." or "The people that know how to use the juicer are busy." ME: "When do you think you will have more...?" RESPONSE: "No idea, maybe Tuesday or Wednesday?" DOWN THE STREET COMPETITOR, if grapefruit juice is not on the shelf: RESPONSE: "We will make some right now for you. How much do you need?" p.s. The juice at Jewel is not made fresh daily. Drive north and you will find it tastes better, lasts longer and is $ 2 cheaper than Jewel. read more

Ok. I have a soft spot in my heart for this particular Jewel, this Schiller location in downtown Elmhurst. I haven't been here in 20 years! I love it because the Jewel was my first real job, back in the mid-80's...I met my first boyfriend here...he was a checker, I was a bagger. Then I met my husband a few months later... he was a stocker at the Osco Drug, that was back then a totally different store, connected by a weird bridge. The store looks much different now- totally remodeled, modern, super clean. We were a friendly bunch back then and the staff is still super friendly. Elisa at the checkout was sweetly greeting all the customers and Judith did a great job packing up everything for me. I got everything I came for including Indian food, kosher food, gluten-free food and fruits, vegetables, and alcohol. Everything was in stock. Fruits & vegetables look fresh. Plenty of parking. I didn't recognize anyone from my year as a bagger/stocker, but it was good to be back!! read more

FOILED AGAIN.....ALMOST A helpful cashier made all the difference when it came to redeeming a freebie voucher. With Jewel's Monopoly marketing gimmick nearing its end, I'm making the rounds to cash in all my various 'instant winner' tickets. I've got more than a dozen saved up for free bagels, a free bottle of aspirin, a free case of water, and of course, free aluminum foil. At the express check-out, I got my items scanned like usual (including a mediocre sushi lunch for $5.79). Not realizing that I needed to link a phone number to my Jewel MyMixx account, I wasted a few minutes trying to load the "my rewards" tab like an idiot. Seeing that I had the paper copy in my hand -- and not wanting to delay things any further -- the guy at the checkstand was able to issue me a store discount for the value of the 25ft roll of foil (thanks dude!), being patient the whole time. Most anyone else would've just stared at me and waited. Other than that, it's a pretty standard-issue Jewel. Shelves were fully stocked and the aisles were kept tidy. Parking lot is big enough. * TL;DR * With places like Mariano's and Pete's Fresh Market stealing away loyal customers, it's probably only a matter of time before Jewel Osco shares a similar fate to Dominick's. Of note: the Elmhurst location is managed far better than the Winston Plaza (Melrose Park) one and is roughly on par with the River Forest store. This Jewel is stronger than the 2-1/2 star rating would lead you to believe, but it still ain't no Trader Joe's. read more

(Must be for the holiday weekend) The parking lot is decent sized and the store on a Saturday afternoon was very busy. This alcohol section was stocked and full of great sales! read more

Nice local grocery store with a large fresh produce selection, fresh seafood, liquor, beer, wine selection, and weekly sale. The site is clean and well sanitize, well lit, they have organic and gluten free product and it's open every day. They have pretty much everything you could want to eat or drink. It's convenient and affordable. Most staff members are attentive and efficient most of the time. When I've had an issue, management is always ready to listen and solve. No store is perfect, but in my experience, this is the best. read more

I live right next to a jewel. I sometimes want and/or crave something. I can walk to jewel, go to self checkout, get what I need and be able to do this without interruption. The cashiers are nice, and always willing to help you. It's a nice place just to get what you want. I mean, obviously it's hard to keep spotless, but what do you expect with a local supermarket? Prices aren't great, but coupons are easily available and accessible. The jewel app is a good help for that. So, if you need to get an ice cream bar, go to your local jewel. read more

I have been going to this Jewel for years. I have always loved the welcoming service. BIG SHOUT OUT to Hilda in the bakery. Hilda bakes the cakes and designs all the special cakes. Fantastic! the graduation cake for my son was a hit. read more

I swear they track me when I have to shop here and then take the items that I like and no longer carry them. They recently did a renovation and got a new cheese area and there is now an olive bar in the produce section. I used to buy meat and fish here but I just can't do it because I don't know where they get it from. Why can't they have more local items? I do like that they have the self check out aisles. And you can also get champagne (if it's not from Champagne, France it's sparkling wine kids) marked down on special. read more

This is such a sad store...especially when compared to it's sister store on York. I prefer to drive a slightly further distance to Dominicks. Will go to Costco for what we need. This is a nice local grocery store chain in the Elmhurst neighborhood (and surrounding area) of Chicago. Great produce and the meat is awesome. Truly some great Midwest-grown beef, loved the 16 oz ribeyes we got for bbq. read more

I wouldn't even give them one star .... The family, I am working for, has been using this store for more than 30 years. Today my clients wanted to have crab cakes for dinner. It was 12.00$ per pound...4:50$ for three little pieces... I was embarrassed on Behalf of this store. They sell bread crumbs as crab cakes ... for 12.00$ a Lb.... Shame on Jewel Osco!!!! read more

Unfortunately this is the closest grocery store to where I live. The cashiers and baggers are just about the most unpleasant people Ive come across in a store in quite some time. They also put no effort in to keeping the shelves restocked and there is always a good chance that when youre shopping that something you need will be empty on the shelves. Also, getting rid of the self checkout was an enormous mistake. Since they did that I have had baggers forget to give me all of my groceries at least 3-4 times. read more

Bob is the most friendly person in Elmhurst and it is unfortunate he is surrounded by so many folks who just don't care and have given up on the concept of guest service. One of my least favorite Jewel-Osco stores, and I really don't like Jewel-Osco at all. I only stop when it's on my way home. This store seems very small to me, and doesn't have a lot in the way of selection. I didn't get half of my grocery list because everything was so overpriced. $2 for a non-organic green pepper that's already started to wrinkle? Seriously? I'll pass. Horrible horrible horrible. Made an appointment for my daughter who is 17 years old to get the Covid booster. She is half a year from 18 years old. She works in a nursing home as a CNA is therefore high risk. It has been just over six months since her 2nd dose of Pfizer. I would think that the pharm tech (the stocky looking scruffy guy with the light hair) would honor the appointment and allow her the booster despite the current guidelines saying 18 years and over are qualified, given her high risk job and being so close to 18. All paperwork was prepared ahead of time and we even brought her work badge as proof. Denied. I asked twice to make sure he understood. He stood there -without a mask, mind you, when there is a mask mandate - offered no apologies. Instead we got some weak attempt at a staredown. While we left without causing a scene, believe me, I was fuming. Btw, called the pediatrician office to ask for some advice on this, and the nurse directed me to their medical website where I was able to schedule a booster for my daughter without any difficulty, no issues with her being 17. Osco wasted our time and you can bet I'll be retelling this anyone who asks. Horrible horrible customer service. Won't be back. read more

I've been shopping at this Jewel for 30 years but no more. My 22-year-old daughter tried to buy a bottle of champagne for her sister's 21st birthday and they refused to sell to her because her friend did not have an ID with her. When I confronted the manager his stance is that they now Card everybody within the party. Makes absolutely no sense. I asked what happens if the girl was with me? Would you not sell to me either? He didn't know what to say. I have now taken my business to Marianos. Prices are cheaper and employees in the store are a lot nicer. read more

I continue to go here because it's just so close to where I live and that's on me. Every week I find food that's past code. This week, I pulled 100% of the fat free Deans "milk chug" bottles as they were 4 days past code. I gave them to the stock boy who grunted. I reported it to customer service representative who couldn't be bothered to pretend to be upset and seemed irritated that I even brought it up. Beware of expiration codes! this particular Jewel is getting more and more pathetic. Called at 6:30 pm on a Saturday asking to have a bucker of wings ready for pickup at 7:30pm . The first person who answered the phone could not speak English ( he was not foreign). He sounded like he was eating while on the phone. He then handed the phone off to some who could speak but told me that she had just taken down the fryers for the night.....( at 6:30pm??) She also stated that the bins where the chicken was did not have enough in it at this time to fill a bucket. Way to go Jewel.....The store does not closed for hours and yet the staff is shutting stuff down. Way to make sales......I wonder if the people that ran Dominick's are now working at Jewel. I like shopping here. It's close to my home, and has everything that I need. It might be a little small, but it doesn't take me 4 hours to do my grocery shopping. The produce is always fresh and colorful. There is a meat deli, as well as a seafood place. My main selling point is that Oberweis is sold here. It's a lot closer for me then to the actual store. I picked up some yummy fruit punch today! If you watch your items, things can be very cheap, but it is a higher priced store. The only thing I do not like about this place is that they never have enough cashiers on the tills, so sometimes during rush hours there is a wait. read more

Worst Jewel-Osco location within Chicagoland! Let's begin with the parking lot first. Who designed parking a 3 year old? The parking lot is the worst out of any Jewel anyplace. Lots of one way streets that lead nowhere. Any I wonder why people don't get into accidents here? Second, the store is just old and dilapidated. Who ever goes to Jewel anyways with so many other options out there. Mariano's and Wholefoods is not too far away. Long gone are the standard Jewels and Domincks grocery stores. Well one of them is gone, so you know who will be gone next or at least we can hope for it to be. And for those who think that other stores are more expensive than Jewel, a leading consumer magazine ranked Jewel Osco to have the worst prices in the grocery games. They are not competitive at all with pricing and quality really is lacking. Their produce is a joke, but then again who buys produce there, really? Sure the store may be convenient for the old folks who live in the condo/apartments nearby but people, there are better options. Would not recommend to go there at any time. read more

Don't understand why they don't do better, given the surrounding neighborhood to draw from....upscale neighborhood As other reviewers state - they seem to run out of popular items, or stop carrying them altogether, (skinny pop) - most of the cashiers are clueless...or bully you should you have any problems with self check out. (never enough cashiers) The renovation put in a cheese case that few people use. Like shopping in a third world country...what will they have today? I don't know what happened but I've always liked Jewel but now it's the best . The prices are amazing the quality is top's . The meat and seafood department has Cody and Teri who are friendly and so helpful . I shop very little at other places and don't have to , Jewel has everything i need and it won't cost me and arm and legs I like all the Jewel stores but my favorite is in downtown Elmhurst . I can see why there doing so good and also have a lot more organic products . The company has got it right give customers great prices for quality products and you win. read more

SOOOO SLOW! OMG! I've been to this store 4 times now and every time I go, the checkers are so incredibly slow!!! And they have no self-checkout option, so if you're only getting a few items, you have to wait, wait, wait. Doesn't matter what time or day. This last checker I got would scan one item, then place it into the bag, scan one item then place into the bag...etc. Clearly it makes more sense to scan everything and then USE BOTH HANDS to load everything into the bags. Unbelievable!! It just shows me they're not trained well and the management at that store really doesn't care. And when I voice my opinion at the checkout, it's met with apathy. They just seem too dumb to care. I have other options in Elmhurst to shop, so I won't be making this Jewel-Osco my go-to store (a pity as it's the closest grocery to my home). The men's room is disgusting, what is the hygiene in the rest of the store. The staff is dour just spending time not happy and it shows.

I have been shopping at Jewel since childhood and this Jewel is the worst I've ever seen. This Jewel is a glorified convenience store. For a store in an affluent suburb, this store is not nearly as clean or as nice as other Jewel stores in neighboring suburbs. The worst part about this store is the produce section. The produce, if they have it, is pathetic at best. Damaged, undersized, browned and or rotted is the only way I can describe the produce at this store. In addition to a bad produce selection is that if I walk into the store hoping to purchase 4 items, they inevitably will be out of two. I'm not talking exotic items or hard to find items, it can be oranges, basil, horseradish sauce, blue cheese, the list is endless. I've walked out of this store on too many occasions due to being out of product or having only inferior quality products to choose from. I've been going to this store for 5 years hoping they would improve, but it's never had gotten better. I will continue to go out of my way to avoid this store and maybe someday they will figure it out. read more

Ordered and paid for thanksgiving dinner on Sunday. Deli had us get 2 receipts which we did. On thanksgiving morning my husband went to pick up meal. The cashier then said that he had to pay the 79 dollars again. My husband showed the receipt that showed he already paid. They both got loud. Finally a supervisor came and she was rude too. Ugh. I can't stand this store. I only shop here due to convenience, its on my way home from work. Hard to find a parking space on the weekend or between 4-6 pm after work. Dingy, overpriced and the worst part is they NEVER have enough people working the check-out. Not enough lanes open, not enough baggers. Really, you'd think they would figure out how to staff. They just don't seem to care if they have long lines. Now they are remodeling and moving everything -- so in addition to high prices you can't even FIND what you're looking for. Who's bright idea was it to move everything around?!!?? From now on, I'll go out of my way to shop elsewhere. It's just not worth the hassle. read more
