I just stood in an aisle listening to the store manager scream at and humiliate an employee about a long customer line issue. I know it was them because they hatefully reminded the employee multiple times, as well as the asst manager through the phone. It was very loud, very obnoxious, and the worst display of professionalism I've seen in decades. You could hear it from the registers and several aisles away. I only shop at the VP Jewel out of convenience. The front of the store, parking lot and parts of the store inside are dirty. Why can't somebody step outside periodically and sweep up the debris from the front of the store/parking lot? Also it stinks of fried chicken every time I go in that store, get a better ventilation system please! There are several employees who are so friendly and sincere how they do their job, namely John and Brendan; other employees could take lessons from them in customer service. I have been going to this Jewel in my neighborhood for almost 6 years and have always loved it! Today I was at self checkout and my son was really fussy in his stroller and threw up in his car seat. Theresa was working self check out and immediately got a bunch of paper towels and wipes and cleaned him up for me while I finished checking out my groceries. I've seen her there many times and is always so sweet but this was one of the kindest things that she did for me. It's always stressful bringing my kids into a store by myself and to have someone be so kind and help me when I was struggling really made my day. Thank you so much! read more

The app doesn't work. it's not isolated, many people before me and in other lines have the same issue. Online ordering - what a joke: the produce i get seems intentionally bad, last week I received a full bunch of black bananas, awful strawberries. Let's say there is zero training of employees -it sure seems that way- a 3 year old wouldnt pick this garbage. More times than not the meat spoils soon after purchase or already smells in the store. NOW let's talk about the smell in the store - on several occasions there is a stench of a sewer problem. Makes it really unappealing when you're standing in the only area with fresh food in the store!!! What is it we don't see? Deli counter employees are miserable and hate their job - consistent experience! The store is always dirty. The worst part - when the app isn't working - which is all the time - I had a cashier who grabbed my phone from my hand and start pushing buttons and scrolling logged me out of everything and had the b""s to be angry at me. If you don't mind running out of your meds because they are on "auto refill" but never seem to be filled this is the place for you. This is one of my local Jewel. I come here because it's across the street from my local bank. Get cash and yeah give it here. The place is your typical grocery store chain. However it's not as big as the one in Wood Dale (Irving Park Rd). This place needs a bit more remodeling inside though. But it's clean and the food displays are well organized. I always see someone filling up the shelves or organizing the cans. Staff here seems friendly. I haven't had a bad experience and they always have what I need when I'm in a hurry. They have your TCF bank here. I do like their spinach dip, friend chicken from the deli and their fudge cakes. They do have a fresh meat/fish display here so it's not as small like the one in Addison (off of Lake st). I like that Jewel sell 1/2 a pie or a 1/4 sheet of cake even a slice of cake too. When I was growing up in the summer, my dad would go out of his way to get their Delmonico steaks here as they didn't see them at the other Jewel's in the area at the time. They have a cooked chicken wings station with different kinds of flapper plain or sauced in the Deli section that you can purchase by the # of pieces/bucket. When they are fresh get it, but lately I see them sitting under the heated lamp for awhile eh pass today. You know that there's locals that come here for a LONG time as you hear them saying hello to the staff saying how's the family/how's the kids, see you next week. However - they recently re-did the entire produce, deli, and meat section, as well as revamped the rest of the grocery section. the lights are better, the floors are better, the shelves are stocked nicer, and the quality of the produce - man is it better. Hats off to you Villa Park Jewell, you were crap, but your store remodel and redesign saved you. I'm happy to shop in my home town Jewel again. I spent 1 hour getting my groceries together, then when waiting my turn at the deli counter with my number in hand, the African American worker totally ignored me and took the next African American instead he didn't even ask who was next!!!! I was waiting there a good 10 minutes there was no way they did not see me. I said to the employees thank you for ignoring me and left without a purchase. I went to the front and asked for a manager and was told there were none around. I found the person running the front, told them what happened and explained that they could put the food back as I was now going to shop somewhere else. After spending $400.00 a month for over twenty years you would think a company like this would want to keep its loyal customers. Too bad corporate Companys have put cheap inexcusable labor in front of customer service. Fortunately, there are many other food stores around in my area. I had a bad experience here 2 days ago. I was buying some stuff and it was not coming up right when cashier scanned. He called over a manager. She repeatedly kept trying to grab my phone from my hands after I told her not to touch my phone I would show her whatever she wanted to see in my Jewel app. She made me get out of line and moved me over to the self checkout cashier. She re-rang my items and told me my 4u offers only applied to online orders and she would not help me. She insisted I call the 4u number bc of my issues. My coupon in the app showed "clipped" and did not say anything about online only. I asked her how I can tell what deals are for in store or online and she told me all of mine were for online only. After further questioning her she stated she would not help me bc she didn't know how the app works and I'm wrong. She also stated there's no way for me to tell prices In store bc the app is for online orders and those are online only prices. After a long time of arguing with me she finally took my offers but told me I have to call the 4u number. I know a few others who have these same offers and were able to use them in store with no issues. I am outraged at how I was treated. What is jewel policy on grabbing customer phones? What is jewel policy for mangers who claim not to know anything about the jewel app and insist it's customer issue and they must call. The staff is very nice, thus the two stars given. Just don't buy anything that is refrigerated. I think their coolers are all defective and ruin the food. I have had to throw away all kinds of items from the middle isles like ice cream and frozen foods as well as milk and dairy products. I always have to throw away my milk purchases. I finally stopped buying my milk there no matter how desperate I am to buy milk for the week. The deli is okay I guess but I did have to throw away ham I bought from the deli. Usually, the pre packaged deli meats not sliced by the in store deli are okay if you pick them from the back of the cooler area. In addition, they have really changed the quality of their bakery items. The chocolate tastes terrible now and their pecan pastries are stale even though they have 3 more days left on them according to the packaging from the day you buy them. Their products all taste really bad. Also, produce is really hit or miss. I used to love buying the herring and salmon and crab but again I think the poor refrigeration ruins the taste of these pre packaged products. These are actually expensive products that I have to throw away, too. I know Jewel changed owners to the folks who used to own Dominick's grocery in the area before Dominick's went out of business. Jewel has now gone down the same path as Dominick's did before they closed. If you stick with the canned goods (not Signature Select though) and Osco products, you would be better off. As stated before, the workers there are really great but they cannot make up for the ruined food and poor quality food products sold in the store. read more

Expired food. I bought groceries yesterday and I am making a grilled cheese and I notice the spots in my pepper jack cheese were not peppers but mold! I check the date and it's almost 3 months expired. That is so disturbing and disgusting!! If I'm paying for groceries with my good hard earned money I expect to get what I am paying for! I'm livid!! I love this Villa Park Jewel/Osco store. The floral dept always does a great job making the area look festive. I have worked produce before and it's hard job to keep up with the sales and culling. The dept always looks inviting and fresh. I find great deals on the fresh fish and meats. Let's not forget the bakery and deli. Lots of hard work from these employees. The title of this review should be "Woman Bested by Mechanical Device". Yes, you guessed it following my trip to the Jewel Foods I rolled my cart into the check yourself out yourself line. Whatever was I thinking? Was this thing invented by the Marquis de Sade? This supposed time saver has the ability to make you feel inept and inferior, even though it is an inanimate object. Though it certainly is animated! The thing would not shut up. I suspect it was because I wasn't scanning fast enough. I also feel it knew I had limited prior experience. I gained confidence toward the end, that is until I needed to scan some bananas. It would have none of that. No can do bananas. No you may not have bananas. This store and I have had banana issues in the past. Fortunately for me, and for this talking conveyor belt, a service associate shut the thing up. She also bagged my groceries in a split second, as I was in no condition to do so after being bested by a machine. For the service associate, for the nice girl at the deli who gave me a sample, and for the fact that everything I needed was totally there, nice! For that self service thingy ..... I have been to quite a few Jewel-osco locations, but this location takes the cake for being the worst. Customer service (front desk) employees are rude. I have never waited less than 10 minutes to been seen by someone. Then when I finally am serviced, the attitudes of the employees are horrible. They act as if helping someone ISN'T in their job description. Getting someone to help you in the aisle is like trying to find a needle in a hay stack, impossible! Sometimes I go there and there is a cloud of smoke coming from the kitchen and it smells like old grease burning. Probably the reason the chicken is so dry. Lastly, the way your employees speak to each other (primarily those with disabilities) is disgusting! They are not stupid, so there isn't a need to treat them as such. Never heard of this chain until I happened upon this one. It is very nice and fancy and reminds me of a Harris Teeter. Very large, good beer selection, and I was very surprised to find that they had an aisle that had things like socks and mittens in it. Very useful and different from the grocery stores around me. That said, I agree with a previous reviewer that the check out is confusing. Why have automatic checkout in the first place if you need at least two attendants there having to explain the process and press buttons on the machine? One of the few instances in which non-auto checkout might be faster.. Apparently this place is going to be taken over by Giant, which is one of my least favorite grocery chains. Two separate times, they have not had my prescription ready even though I had called two days in advance to get it refilled, I had to wait 1+ hours for it to be ready. So this is my neighborhood Jewel. Nearly every Sunday you will find me rolling my shiny cart up and down the aisle, looking for just the right items to feed my household for the week. I don't know - maybe I am weird - but I could navigate the aisles with my eyes closed. Is that what shopping in the same store for nearly 8 years allows you to do? Maybe. But then they went and changed the layout. I really do comprehend the need to freshen things up but this re-do... It is the stuff of my nightmares. Nothing is where it should be! It's been a few weeks and I was hoping to get a little better acquainted with the new layout but it still just annoys me a lot and it feels very unintuitive. Sure, that won't bring back the old store and sure, it won't stop me from shopping there but I am cranky that it takes longer now to find what I need. As for the employees, I have come across some hilariously surly/ cranky/ mouthy individuals and I make a point to go through their lines just for the amusement. Not that it makes up for the fact that I forget half my grocery list every week lately or that one of the deli workers called me sir a couple of weeks ago but it helps. read more

Meh, I'm not really a fan of this Jewel at all. This Jewel is pretty close to my house, so it's where I do my shopping, but not all Jewels are the same. I much preferred the Jewel in Wood Dale where I lived previously. The selection of fruits, particularly the apples, isn't great. They are always small and don't look that good. We've come to skip the produce section altogether and make the extra trip to Pete's Market where their produce selection is amazing. We come here for the standard groceries. I do like Jewel's current promotion where they hook up with Shell to give discounts on gas based on how much you purchase. This is great for me since I fill up every week. However, they signed me up at the service desk and gave me a "password" if I ever forget my preferred card. Well, I did and I used the password, which didn't work. The cashier tried several times to no avail. So no gas rewards for me. The customer service here isn't great either. I worked at a different Jewel for 3.5 years, so I know a little something about bagging groceries and being friendly. Now don't think I was a customer service god. I know I wasn't. But I was a fast and efficient bagger and at the very least said hi, and paid attention to the customer. You don't have to be cheery to be able to do that. Most of the employees I've encountered here can't even do that. The bagger put one thing in every bag: a bag of cheese by itself. A banana by itself. Talk about wasting bags, something we were taught to never do! This is why I like bagging things myself. I'll keep coming back because it's my neighborhood Jewel, but if there is a better one nearby, I might ditch this location. read more

I love being treated poorly by the Deli staff. Just makes my day. First there's a 30 minute wait because they don't have any sense of urgency and only 3 people in line. Then if you ask for something that takes effort to get, forget it, expect to wait and be treated like crap. And when I ask for 2 lbs of cheese don't tell me all I'm getting is 1 1/2lbs Donna G. For everyday stuff you are ok, but if you plan on shopping for more than a few things, you are going to wait, long. There's been so many times that items bought were lost. (by the baggers) Just caused some inconvenience, but still pretty annoying. It would be a lot better if i didn't have those crooks at TCF bank trying to sell me stuff. But the prices for stuff and the quality of it aren't worth it, half the apples we buy are almost rotten. I have a love/hate relationship with this particular location. So convenient being right down the street from my house, and easy to navigate so I can be in and out if I so desire to pick up some milk and get home. Otherwise, the produce section is almost always low or out of everything. I've noticed they've tried to beef it up lately but it just doesn't compare to some of the other grocery options in the area. There is always a long line at the check out, so even if you have only one item it takes forever to pay. read more
