I strongly dislike this Jewel. They never have items, the aisles make no sense and it seems as if it's an unorganized chaos. When you walk down the aisles, you are not able to find where things are because it's not labeled well or all them items are not where they are suppose to be. Basic items like very basic produce they don't have or they don't actively stock. The Jewel on Howard and Clark is way better. I won't be coming back here again despite its convenience. read more

This is one of the worst Jewel stores in Chicagoland. Aggressive panhandlers always blocking store access ( I know, its Evanstonia so that wont ever change), weird and completely dysfunctional layout, and some of the rudest, belligerent employees anywhere. Horrible experience if you're a woman..One of the employees was following my friend around and smiling creepily at her and once she came back over to me he was there and she explained how he was following her and made her uncomfortable..I had us walk down a bit and he followed..I had us walk down half an aisle and back up so I could confirm him following and he went down the other aisle peeking to see if we were on the other side..once we went down a completely different aisle a few aisles down he popped up again behind us looking..we told the manager and they asked who we were talking about it and we described him just for them to still be confused so they don't even know who's working the floor..They went to "find" him and couldn't find anything on the floor when it was clear he was in the back hiding because I said to my friend I was going to tell a manager..They didn't do anything and didn't even apologize for the creepy and unsafe experience we had and not to mention she had her kids with her! Fuck this jewels and the half ass help they provide I hope they do some rehiring because it's needed! And considering all the other reviews and complaints clearly they have a problem! read more

Seems to be a nice supermarket in the neighborhood, i was there on a Thursday afternoon, not much people there. I used the self check out, easy, the most impressive thing to me is their plastic shopping bag, very thick and seems very good quality. I never seen such thick plastic bag in a supermarket. While checking out today, I was carded for buying alcohol. Check out girl was underage, so Manager came over. Showed him my ID and bought my bottle of wine. An elderly woman behind me also had a bottle of wine and groceries, and was also carded. She had no drivers license - she said she didn't drive anymore. The manager said "I can't sell you alcohol without a drivers license." So, I said "let me buy that for her." The manager refused my offer. He said "That's not allowed, we don't do that." The older woman was pissed and said that she would never return to this store. I feel the same way....come on Jewel---what the heck!!!! read more

This Jewel really needs to get it together with the panhandling situation. I never cared before about the one older streetwise lady or the occasional resident from the nursing home, because they weren't bothering anyone. But it's downright awful now. First, they are on the property. Second- there's literally 3-6 able bodied adult males aggressively panhandling at night - most of the time threatening and fighting amongst one another. 3. I got asked by some guy to scan a QR code standing right in the produce section- as he was raising money for his "basketball" team or somebody got shot - I honestly can't remember the bs story. 4. Yeah- and when they do have security- one is this tiny chick (95 lbs soaking wet) with long braids & nails who spends all her time on the phone...or another guy who stands in the store talking with the manager. I go here to avoid the Jewel closest to my house which is worse, which given this location doesn't seem possible. I'm going to start shopping in another county where this crap isn't tolerated. read more

Avoid this grocery store at all costs. The entrance was flanked, literally, by two or three pan handlers who I had to squeeze past. The tunnel-like entrance was filled with cigarette smoke from the loitering transients. Once inside I found the grocery aisles messy and poorly organized. Upon checking out, I was forced to self-check out due to so few cashiers. I don't mind this, but after putting my reusable grocery bag down (my 3-4 items were inside) a clerk came rushing over. I thought, "how nice, he's going to help a first-timer figure out the check-out process". I quickly figured out he was hovering within a foot of me because he thought I was planning to shoplift! I had to ask him to step back at one point because he was in my personal space. It was an uncomfortable and unnecessary experience. I will not return to this store. Management needs to focus on the real problems you can SEE at this store, rather than those in their staff's imagination. I'm a senior shopper would spent 30 years as a law enforcement officer, NOT a conniving theif. read more

With Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, and even Target so close by, there is really no reason to come here. There are several areas where Jewel-Osco misses the mark... 1) Produce is often wilting, dirty, or low-quality. You have to really check what you're getting carefully because I've found the leafy greens are often in bad shape. I've even heard store employees here complain about how bad their shipments are. 2) Service is inconsistent. There are some very helpful employees, but others often appear disinterested. I once had a gift card I was trying to use here, and it was a bit of a harrowing experience. 3) It's actually not that much cheaper than competitors. I've always assumed Jewel-Osco to be the discount option in the area, but for almost everything I'm looking for I can find it at the same price at either Trader Joe's or Whole Foods. read more

This jewel needs to fire Asfar Uladdin. He harasses black customers by following them around. He never asks if assistance is needed and just stares at you when you're in the self check out. I had run ins with him before and reported his behavior to the manager. The manager said he'll speak with him. Today, while I was shopping for Mother's Day, he left the self check out area where there are 5 registers just to walk behind me in the flower area. I really hope Jewel see this review because I been shopping here since 2015: way before he started working this location. He needs to go period. read more

I know that this Jewel-Osco gets a lot of stick, but that seems unfair. The only time I had a negative experience was when they rearranged their aisles. I felt like I had Alzheimer's as I wandered around getting re-oriented. That said, it's good to walk into a produce section that features its organic selection first. The produce is almost always in great shape (bananas are notoriously hard to keep green) and are re-stocked quickly. The deli was a good selection of cuts, and they're happy to give you a sample or two to get the cut right. Everything else is as it should be - its produce section may not rival Valli, but it's better than TJ, and its frozen section is much larger than Valli's. read more

Recently moved to Evanston from Florida and shopped at Publix which are always incredibly clean and have the absolute most helpful and professional staff. This place from the start the time you enter until you leave horrible. Start off with bums always at the front door begging which as a customer I find very uncomfortable. Then you step inside to the coldest grocery store I have ever been in. Every employee is wearing a heavy jacket it is easily some where around 50 something degrees. I spoke to someone at customer service they blamed the freezers, every grocery store has freezers and it's not this cold inside. Sounds like an extremely inefficient way to operate. Most of the time the Apple Pay doesn't work I go to the other Jewel on Howard and they work and it's also not 50 ish degrees inside just this one on Chicago Ave. I seriously doubt my review will make any impact as I see numerous really bad reviews. I will ship elsewhere for now on as I do not foresee any changes being made here and I am tired of being frustrated every time I shop in this dump. read more

Corporate seems to have forgotten about this store. They are so neglected. Ironically, there are so many people who work there going above and beyond. Reggie is amazing. One of the hardest working young men I've had the good fortunate to deal with. If it weren't for Reggie and some of the people like him, I'd be at Trader Joe's right across the street. They never have the same sort of negligence jewel does. The jewel a coupe of miles away is a super star. I don't get it. I have seen this Jewel without the proper refrigeration, not to mention that they never have the same quality of food as neighboring Jewels. I also tried to use the Jewel app on my phone to pay, but they aren't set up to do that. When I called customer service, I was told she would send an email. I just don't feel super great shopping here and they could take some notes from other grocery stores like Trader Joes or Whole Foods. The prices are okay though. This place is pretty abysmal all around. Aside from the fact that their prices are considerably higher than everywhere else nearby, the customer service is very rough. Today I was looking for miso paste and asked an employee where to find it because the shelf it should have been on was full of chips. First he pointed me to the toothpaste aisle, then just said he didn't know. I had to press a few more times to get him to ask someone else. I followed him to hiw coworker/manager and when I got there could hear him saying "I don't even know what she wants" while they both laughed. The manager continued to walk past me while saying "it's in the Asian aisle or it's not there." The whole interaction was extremely dismissive and just proved again why Jewel is typically my last resort. They wouldn't give me the time of day and made no effort to at least look into whether or not they had what I was looking for. Thought I;d give this joint a "second chance", as I saw something on sale I thought I'd pick up. EPIC FAIL...!!! At check - out I got a blathering clerk (short, older, gray - haired woman) who had a "stream - of - consciousness" self - dialogue going. She continually was screwing up scanning and weighing a customer's produce, so this simple task took an eon. The "bagger' was a tall scummy - looking guy, nonchalantly picking his nose, and so when I said, "I'll bag my own groceries, please!", the checker shot me a prolonged hate look, and then proceeded to throw my stuff haphazardly and messily towards the end of the belt. She told the next customer, "Oh, he's bagging his own stuff, that's why everything is going so slow" [!!!] When I got home, I rinsed off all the items with a hydrogen peroxide spray, and I still felt so unclean from my "Jewel Experience" that I took a long hot bath to wind down... This kind of experience I find fairly consistent with all Jewels, so my question is, "WHY is this chain still in business...!!!???" PS: the "sale" item, was, of course, "Sorry, OUT - OF - STOCK!". And their prices in general just pretty much suck, there's a lot of "to get the SALE price, you must buy MULTIPLES of an item"...a pretty moth - eaten and skanky ruse, in my not - so - humble - opinion. The adjacent Whole Foods and Trader Joe's are far superior options, save yourselves the grief and shop those places... read more

Without a doubt, one of the worst Jewels. There is no management overseeing this store! The employees run this store! The store is dirty, unorganized, and never follows through on any complaints. Just yesterday, most on sale tags were missing! I was in the yogurt aisle and noticed missing tags for Chobani( fruit on the bottom) and Two Good yogurts. There was within 20 feet a supervisor and staff member talking to each other. ( and of all things the cost of living) . I pointed out this to them, and they looked at me as if they didn't work there! I went in there today to see if the tags were added. No! I have complained numerous times, only to be told that it will be brought to the store read more

A colleague of mine once averred that the kosher fried chicken at this Jewel is the best fried chicken in the land. I would love to test his assertion--but the kosher chicken counter is never open, man. NEVER. It doesn't matter what day and time you try. NE-VERRR. Back when I worked in Skokie, this was one of my regular Jewelz. Overall I like the place. They are above-average on produce but weak on bakery. It's a big store, but the shelves often seem sparse. However, they have several self-checkout stations for which there is rarely a line. The staff are generally far nicer than any other Jewel, especially in the city. But the other day I saw a very kind lady go above and beyond to assist a middle-aged man with a language barrier using the self-checkout. I should have tried to catch her name, because she deserves some recognition. If you are shopping for a springtime Thanksgiving dinner party, or any other such event, don't be suckered in by the giant display of aluminum roasting pans near the meat section. Those pans are $2.69. Go around the corner to the cooking gear aisle, where you will find a different brand for only 89 cents. It pays to be an alert shopper! Oh, and of course they have Kerrygold Irish butter here for $5.99 like every other Jewel. They also have Plugra, but I'm not yet ready to betray my beloved Kerrygold by trying a rival butter. I can't understand why this jewel is still open - they always have long lines and discourteous staff. Today when my wife raised an error regarding the incorrect price of a case of product ( more than the number in the case x individual cost) the Customer service person told her that it was her fault for buying a case and when she questioned her logic the clerk flipped her a curt comment and walked away - in the meantime my check out person never said hello Good unit otherwise. I think it's a corporate policy that every Jewel Osco needs to be a dour shopping experience run by burned out staff whose attitude slides between disinterested and rude. This location's staff is reasonably amiable, though definitely as... let's just say, deliberate... as your typical Jewel staff. I had a strange experience a recent morning where a checker was running out of bags, so she tried putting my purchases in one of the clear plastic meat/produce bags (at least she didn't charge me for them). Obviously these bags are not designed to be carried and thus it doesn't work. I was more amused than anything else. I'm glad I don't come here during the afternoon rush hour. This place is dirty, disorganized, overpriced, and constantly has long lines at the registers. I live 5 minutes from this Jewel, and 20 minutes from Mariano's in Skokie, and I ALWAYS choose Mariano's when I have the time. The produce is often dirty, sticky, or dull-looking. Everything costs more than it does at Mariano's. The layout of the store makes no sense, the aisles are too narrow, and the checkout lines are always 5+ people long no matter what time of day you go. They never have enough cashiers working, and there is no room for the lines so you end up blocking the aisles for other customers. Oh, and you can't get into or out of the store without being asked for change or to sign the latest petition. Avoid this store at all costs! read more

Dont' get why this place has such low ratings! Only been here a few times because Whole foods is way closer to me (30 second walk vs. 15 minute walk) but I've always had a positive experience. Nice to see foods that are significantly more affordable for poor college kids (just bought 10 yoplait yogurts for $5 today!) and their selection is quite good. Staff is also friendly as well. Asked someone to help me find balloons, and they walked me over themselves to the section even though it was on the other side of the store. Wish it was closer so I could go more frequently. read more

I find all of the employees of both the grocery and pharmacy to be extremely helpful and considerate, They make what each of my shopping trips there into a pleasant experience. DON'T buy anything from here without checking expiration dates!!!!! I can deal with the horrible customer service, but what I can't handle is expired foods. Yesterday I decided it was finally time to write a review as it was the 6th (yes I said 6th!!) time I have pointed out to them that something was expired. This doesn't include the first two times when I noticed after I already bought the item and took it home. The salad has been expired, chocolate almonds, and several things from the gluten free aisle. This was the worst and latest expired thing I saw (this was the yesterday) and i had to share. These are yogurt covered pretzels and there was a whole row of them with this expiration. Gross!!! If it wasn't so conveniently close to me I would never go again. read more

I don't really mind the panhandlers at all - they're a minor annoyance at the worst, and some are actually quite polite. But the produce is really awful. Kinda limited selection, but not well stocked, and mostly not fresh at all. Not willing to pay their price for their kind of quality. It's really bad. It's pretty slim pickings for most things it seems, and if you're desperate/lucky enough, the stuff I've gotten has trouble lasting past 2-3 days. The aisles are not arranged in a sensible way, nor are the items arranged in a way that makes sense within the aisles, but that and their really dumb ID policy are just minor annoyances. But I really can't get over how bad the produce section is. I guess 3 stars to be nice, but I'd rather give it a 2.5 read more

This review is for the Jewel-Osco at 1128 Chicago Avenue in Evanston. Although I usually find what I need here, and for a good price, shopping here can be an unpleasant experience. For starters the store fronts on Chicago Avenue, a busy street, with an enormous parking lot next to the store. But the parking lot is at the side of the building (not in front) with only ONE set of entry/exit doors situated quite far from the nearest parking space. A better plan would have fronted the store facing the parking lot, with room for TWO sets of entrances/exits. As it is the existing single entrance/exit "funnels" customers into a long, dark corridor like outdoor walkway populated by individuals asking for money (look for them right next to the NO SOLICITING sign), and customers or staff taking a smoking break, chatting on their phones, etc. The problem is the space is too small for so much traffic. Also, all the shopping carts collected from the lot have to be moved back into the store through this same space. If you happen to arrive at the moment a hapless employee is moving fifty carts from the lot back into the store, be prepared to navigate your way in. Once inside, you are forced to walk past all of the 6-8 or so check-out registers (most of which are always unused) past the floral area and into the produce area before you can then circle back to start shopping. There's an area immediately inside the entrance stacked with "stuff" which must be placed there for no other reason than to prevent you from moving in that direction. So just entering the store is a challenge. Once inside, I can usually find what I need, but this particular Jewel-Osco suffers also in that it is smaller than other stores so there's less shelf space. If something goes on sale, be prepared to find it out of stock. I drink a lot of diet ginger ale and Jewel's typical sale is 99 cents for a 2 liter container, but you must buy 4, 2-liter containers to get the sale price. It's unusual to find 4 on the shelf, so I have to request the sale price for my one bottle (the last one); someone has to call for the manager and I hold up the line -- they usually give me the price but the cashier can be rude about it. (Memo to management -- if you are going to offer this type of sale, make sure to put enough of the product on the shelf so you don't run out!) Some of the staff is fine, other's not so much. On the produce side, it's not so bad for staples such as broccoli, cucumbers, roma tomatoes, bananas, apples. For other items, check carefully, but don't ever buy fresh peaches from Jewel -- they are always mealy-- Jewel does not know how to store them properly before putting them out for sale. For meat, also, be sure to check the dates on the packages -- I've bought bad meat before and had to return it (fortunately I live nearby, but it's a hassle nevertheless!). The meat and fish dept always closes during the week before 7 PM. The case is usually in the process of being emptied out by 6:45. read more

I have been a customer for many many years and today I had a very bad experience with Rachel, she was behaving in a rude manner by rejecting my coupon claiming that it didn't fit the item even though it was a the same brand and WAS SCANNING AND WORKING, she just decided to not to finish my order and go on to the next customer. Most of the employees are quite nice but this was the worst experience I have had at this place over a problem that could have been easily solved but didn't just because she didn't want to. read more

I thank you, negative reviewers whom I can't bear to read, for your (assumed) bitching & moaning further deepens my devotion to certain stores, such as Jewel. Particularly this Jewel, which has made notable strides as of late. I've experienced all ends of the spectrum of grocery shopping - high & low. I love it all. From Plum Market to "2 limes & and onion" Central American mini-markets. Grocery stores are a way to explore other cultures and preferences, see the world through others eyes, and get creative, however peripheral. It's true - the Jewel stores usually have scummy floors, and no posh affectations. No pianist or other useless flourishes. But there are so many redeeming qualities to the Jewel. The Jewel hires people who might have trouble getting jobs elsewhere. Mentally challenged, recovering alcoholics. Older people. Young people in need of opportunities. You might notice once you look outside of your bubble that these individuals work at the Jewel for years and years. If you go long enough, you have relationships with them. It's called valuing humanity folks. Embrace it. I have never, ever had an employee less than enthusiastic to assist me at any Jewel. They're helpful & well-trained. The latest modifications to the selection at the Evanston Jewel are almost stunning. There's a big push toward organic & health food, but much of it, particularly their generic organic brand, "O" at great prices. Making organic accessible to the working man. Heck yeah! They must have recently hired a genius because their new products are things I've seen nowhere else, such as Ezikiel's bread (organic). The international selection has also greatly increased so the products are much more interesting. Their new buyer / strategist is excellent. I would like to personally give this person a medal. A+++++++....... When you learn to go around the world appreciating, rather than criticizing, your existence will be much more enjoyable. read more

First Spring day. I went early to p.u. the grilled chicken. It wasn't ready yet. I asked the young woman, inches away, "When will the grilled chicken be ready?" No response. I repeated the question. Quietly, so as not to offend the lout. No response again. My third question was "Are you just not speaking to me?" At which point, she started hollering down the aisle as i walked away. THIS? what kind of creeps work at the Jewel Deli on a Saturday? She belongs in a warehouse, away from humans. So I dawdled through the store, and then returned. An older woman was at the counter, but she was busy, as I stood there, putting little sticks into the deli food. Finally, I said, "Excuse me, can I order?" She said I'd have to wait a minute because she was "busy." THEN, I had to put up with her nasty remarks as I ordered the grilled chicken. Have her join the other one at the warehouse.
