Today was the fourth time in 6 months that I've had to return produce to Jewel because it was rotten either when I opened the package day of purchase or within a day or two. This time it was organic lettuce that was full of black decayed leaves and white mold when I opened the packet on day three. Annie at customer service didn't give a toss - not a word of apology, just silently rung up the refund. When I pointed out to her that an apology would have been appreciated, her response was to get snarky with me and then silently retreat to her office and shut the door. I can't decide if the apathy and occasional hostility I regularly experience at this store is due to low calibre hires or, more likely, due to the employees being overworked, underpaid and poorly managed (Annie looks exhausted), but I'm over it and done with this supermarket. By the way, the aforementioned rotten-in-2-days lettuce that I got at Jewel for $3.49 was only $2.50 at Mariano's, and I've never had anything other than pleasantness and friendliness from everyone at Mariano's from the store manager to the guys who collect carts in the parking lot. The worst grocery store in the world. Most of the cashiers always have something to say about what you're buying (to the point where I avoid certain cashiers), the baggers are terrible yet get salty when you request to bag your own items (to avoid, your bag breaking, yet again, because the items in one bag are entirely too heavy), and if I every buy milk, eggs, ice cream, or produce, it goes bad within a day. Once in a while (more like, once in YEARS), I find myself wandering home on Chicago Ave and realize that Christmas is quickly approaching (like, Sunday yo!) and that I need to pick up some French's Fried Onions, Campbell's Cream of Mushroom soup, and Cool Whip (for the husbo, I am a Reddi-Wip fan). Ordinarily, I only shop at Whole Foods and Trader Joe's... with an occasional stop into the Dominick's on Green Bay if I want some Kraft's Singles or Pringles or something. I had forgotten how depressing shopping at this place was. I made my rounds as quickly as possible, poked a few hams (someone finally had the sense to get some bone-in NON-spiral cut hams) but ultimately decided that $20 was too little to be paying for a 7lb ham that I knew too little about. Never will I make the mistake of poor Christmas menu planning again. And bye bye short-lived Diet Coke love affair, even those caffeinated bubbles aren't worth having to come in here. read more

Pros: It's close by, their prices are okay, and they have electricity. Cons: Let's be realistic, it's the Jewel. I'm not going to prattle on about anything that anybody else has already said. Random musings: 1. The checkout girl who stopped ringing us up, to turn to the other girl behind her and shout, "What's a potato?!" 2. The bagger girl who kept asking loudly, "Price check on Titty Cats... How much is the Titty Cats?" Meanwhile we tried very diligently to not burst out laughing. Um, it says Tidy. Like Tide-ey. Tidy Cats. 3. The checkout guy who couldn't ring things up, and when he couldn't ring them up, he grabbed them and asked us, "Uhh, do you want these?" No, sir, I picked them out, put them in my cart, pushed them around the store, took them out of the cart and loaded them on the conveyor belt at the register so you could just toss them aside. 4. The shopper last week who was loudly disgruntled at the store's lack of a large selection of organic foodstuffs... See: Cons. 5. The rasta-hat guy who sits outside and doesn't really beg, but tells us to "...Keep holding hands, love is beautiful!" I refer to this Jewel as "the house of carnies". First let's discuss layout and selection then we'll get into the "house of carnies" reference. The layout should be described as 'dysfunctional' in every possible way, shape, and form. If you're trying to get into/out of the parking lot, best of luck not colliding with a person or car. Upon entry, prepare to slam on the brakes so that you don't hit anyone. See, the store exit leads to the smoke and panhandling chamber which, in turn, leads to one, of only two ways, to access the lot if you are in a car. The parking lot layout is a long, U-shaped circuit which will prevent you from parking anywhere near the actual store while you wait, in sequence, for people to get in and out of spots in front of you. When you are on foot, use caution and have patience. The store entrance is at the end of a smoke-filled chamber jammed with several panhandlers and one of those irritating red DVD machines. The store layout is just as bad and the selection can, of course, be better given the size. Prepare to wait in line at the checkout. They do sell liquor there but there are several caveats. Being Evanston, there aren't many places to acquire said liquor, so the department is very busy. Being Evanston, they must card even 80-year old men lest they lose their license. Being Evanston, enjoy the liquor tax. I'd say about 10% of the staff is over the age of 21 to ring your order, so that adds to the wait caused by not hiring enough cashiers. You're going to stand in line. Carnies. I'm not just talking about the staff, but the clientele as well. You're going to be surrounded by carnies. Everywhere. Also, some people either don't mind waiting while people with long, disturbing, manicures argue their Link card balance with cashiers. Some do. The staff isn't much better than the clientele. They may even be worse. I'm getting angry just writing about this, so we'll end it here. I would give this no stars if I could. I vow to drive farther out to better Jewels. Possibly the worst layout for a grocery store ever. In order to enter the store and get to the groceries you have to squeeze past the cashiers and the carts lining the entrance. The traffic jam is a nightmare. Also, I couldn't find eggs for the longest time. The dairy section is cleverly hidden behind the cosmetics and the lunch meats. WHY!? More complaining: the cans of chili are in the same aisle as dry cake/muffin mixes. Early in my Jewel grocery shopping days I thought I could just run in for a few items and be done in 5-10 minutes. I have since learned that I need to allow myself time to wander up and down every aisle if I want anything. So now I plan ahead. I wish someone would give me a map of what's where. Then I could organize my grocery list in aisle order. Wait, I am getting ahead of myself. The prices are cheap and they have a large parking lot. Also they have good preferred shopping deals. And despite my frustration with the layout, the prices and location keep me coming back. read more

I go to this Jewel all the time as I live about a block away and I was astonished to see how negative the reviews of this place were. The employees here may not always be super excited to help you but if you ask them they will always take care of you. The selection of products is great, everything is always stocked and rarely do they run out of anything. The pharmacy staff is exceptional and they hardly ever run out of any meds. They even remember your face and have your order ready for you when you walk up. read more

I love to give positive yelp reviews. But this place deserves nothing of that sort. The product is sad. Limp and never fully colorful. (Pumped with gmo?) their organic section is small. There is always a line down the isles with cashiers who clearly hate their jobs. The only good thing about this Jewel location is the RedBox. I always joke with my friends that a walk to Jewel seems like a marathon while a walk to Trader Joe's seems like a fun walk in the park (they're literally across the street from each other). I think it's because I'm always disappointed when I come to Jewel. The produce is often not very fresh, even when it's not on sale. Things will usually go bad within a few days and even if it doesn't, doesn't taste very good anyways. Prices for everything else really do vary, but can be more expensive than at Trader Joe's and sometimes comparable to prices at Whole Foods. I brought home some cheese that was moldy along with seeing several packs of moldy cheese on their shelves. It's clear that no one is checking dates. I usually leave this store EXTREMELY frustrated. Unfortunately, My fiancee and I are stuck going here since it is 2 blocks from our apartment. (Yes, we often go to Whole Foods across the street, but it's expensive and doesn't have the variety of products outside of food that Jewel does). First, it's a madhouse in the parking lot. It's a one way, U shaped disaster that I can't believe doesn't result in at least one pedestrian being hit per day. Usually you wait and wait for spots/people until you get a spot that is nowhere near the store. Second, the store inside is ludicrously setup. The baskets and carts are nowhere near the door, and you have to bob and weave through the avalanche of pedestrians at the checkout area to get one of them. Third, there's no rhyme or reason to the setup of where the groceries are, so I'm constantly going from aisle 7 to 14 to find soap/plastic wrap, etc, b/c it could very easily be in either row. That's not including the refrigerated section, which is strewn about 4 aisles all over the store. Fourth, outside of one awesome/helpful employee that works in the fish department, the staff is either dull, tired looking, doesn't speak English, or doesn't give a rat's ass about helping you. Fifth, EASILY the most annoying thing about the store. The checkout area. I'm usually going here on a weekday night when it's quite busy, and they typically have three of the ten cashier lanes open w/ the slowest, most lethargic cashiers you've ever seen. You can choose the self checkout, but it looks like a jungle over there w/ long lines and people always yelling. THEN have fun negotiating your way through that parking lot on the way out. OH....there is one good thing about this store though. They play UPBEAT classic rock songs that get you in a good mood. read more

I thought that it was going to be really hard to find a Jewel that made me more frustrated than the one at State and Roosevelt (see my review). But this one... UGH. The setup makes no sense, the product selection is so weird, and, well, let's just be glad that we can go across the street to Whole Foods for produce because... yeah. That didn't look so hot. And I'm not about to risk my health trying it. Add that to rude customers, the most apathetic employees (who wouldn't even look at me when I asked where a certain product was, much less respond) and not enough self check-out (I love self check-out)... This Jewel is nice and for those looking for a good selection of kosher foods it delivers. The store is clean and has a decent selection, but for my shopping needs it lacks some of the go to items that I buy on a regular basis. I've found the people working here to be adequate, but certainly not especially friendly when I've had to interact with them. The 2 main reasons they can only get 3 stars from me is first they don't carry Diet Mountain Dew in 2 liter bottles. Yeah, I know it's not the worlds most popular drink, but it makes no sense that they can have tons of other Pepsi products in 2 liter bottles, but they never seem to have Diet Mountain Dew in the 2 liter bottles. They second reason they only get 3 stars is they really need to tell the people delivering items to their store at the front entrance to watch their language. Yesterday I walked out and right at the front entrance was a disgruntled delivery person delivering to the store and his language was just as bad as the language frequently used by some of the less educated people you hear talking so loudly on the CTA. I heard God's name used in a profane manner several times and was also subjected to having to hear him use the "F" word 4 or 5 times. Yes, he was probably not a Jewel Osco employee and was probably an employee of another company delivering to them, but they still should insist that vendors delivering to them make sure their drivers either don't use offensive language or keep their uneducated big mouths shut so they don't alienate Jewel Osco's customers. read more

Store manager, Megan, was very unprofessional and did not offer even so much as an apology that I was given incorrect information and told a store policy that turned out to be incorrect. I typically go to this jewel instead of the one on Howard since they at least have a friendly staff most of the time. The big reason for the negative review is that this place is a hot spot for beggars and homeless people to sit in front of and beg for money all day long. I stop here nearly two times a week and I rarely, if ever, enter the building without at least one homeless person begging me for money. I sympathize with them, I really do; but this is not good for a customer experience. The sad part is, I've started to recognize the same homeless people constantly coming up there to beg and the company doesn't do anything about it (or if they have it's not very apparent or effective). A couple of these homeless people are younger and able-bodied and should be begging for a job there rather than trying to leech off their consumer base. One of the older homeless people actually followed a friend of mine into the store and started screaming at him aggressively while the staff stood by and did nothing. I mean come on! At least defend your loyal customers while they are patronizing you on your property. I will admit, the facility is clean, stocked and carries nearly everything that they should, but it's tough to give a decent review as a customer when I can't even feel comfortable entering the building. I can't feasibly give more than two stars here until they fix this issue. Jewel-Osco team, please show us that you are listening, that you care, and take action or you will proceed to get these reviews. read more

Worst grocery store - period. The prices are much higher for similar products at Aldi or even Trader Joe's, but the real reason to avoid the place is the "help" and the self-service check out. If you use the self-service and something goes wrong (as it always does) be prepared to be lectured by an employee about how you're doing it wrong. As in 'You're giving us your hard-earned cash in the wrong way, you dumbass" The system laboriously tells you what each item is, what it cost, and what discount you may have received. It doesn't allow you to swipe one item multiple times and in general is far slower than a competent checker. Which is the second issue...half of the checkers and baggers aren't up to the task. And once you do get your groceries, your trip to the car will be accompanied by harangues from the beggars at the store entrance. Best to avoid it all together. read more

The Jewel I visit is not just a grocery store. It's that dysfunctional family member or friend who one has nothing but high hopes for, only to be disappointed over and over again. There are four reasons why this Jewel sucks: It's Crowded- The parking lot is always packed. If you come here during the dinner hour on a weeknight, prepare for battle in the parking lot. The store itself is ten pounds of retail in a five pound bag. Cramming the TCF bank by the registers doesn't help. What really bugs me is that employees are constantly facing and shelving items in their section no matter what time of day or night it is. I know it's not their fault, but maybe they should refrain from doing that task during peak periods. The Panhandlers- These men are the most aggressive panhandlers I've come across. I don't know why they return there, because I've never seen any customer give them money. They're usually found under the vestibule near the store's entrance. However, one was accosting anything that moved in the parking lot a few days ago. The Layout - It makes sense to put bacon, yogurt and gelatin products not in the frozen foods section, but in a section all their own bordering Osco. The catch-as-catch can layout means I spend at least ten minutes per visit looking for an item which should be with the bread, or canned goods, or frozen items, but is somewhere else entirely. The Customer Service Staff- The front-end employees have consistently treated me like I was at fault for making them do their jobs. On more than one occasion, the baggers have bagged items such as deli meat and canned goods together. You might ask, "If you hate your Jewel so much, why do you give them your money twice a week?" Recently purchased some "fresh" meat on November 26. Opening it, I realized the "Best on or before" date was November 22. Poorly managed, usually understaffed, overcrowded with products, poor merchandising, and restocking. The staff are sometimes rude to each other. Produce is hit and miss and sometimes almost nonexistent. I only shop here occasionally since it's nearby, but make every effort to avoid it. read more

I have a bit of free time before my summer of freedom comes to an end so I decided to do a little comparison shopping between my local Whole Foods and Jewel-Osco. I meandered down Chicago Ave and was surprised to see yet another Whole Foods directly across the street. I guess Whole Foods is to Chicago was Taco Cabana is to Texas. Anyway, I pulled out my phone and began to compare the prices I had noted at Whole Foods vs the price of the same things at Jewel - I was AMAZED to see there is no difference in price for produce. Are you kidding? At Whole Foods my conscience is placated knowing the shelves are stocked with bananas lovingly picked by reformed drug cartel members - why would I pay the same amount at a less convenient, less enjoyable grocery store. This Jewel does carry a very wide selection of products, and has the full gauntlet of frozen foods and alcohol. There were a couple of homeless people wandering aimlessly inside, but hey, it's hot out and Jewel is air conditioned. Good choice. Jewel's not a bad choice, it's just not my choice. Yes, Whole Foods patrons can be pretentious, and yes, some of their luxury versions of good are a bit ridiculous, but if you're shopping for staples it's not a bad deal. I think I'll save the walk and stick with my local Whole Foods. read more

Do yourself a favor and go to Trader Joe's across the street. This Jewel has been an absolute nightmare to navigate post-remodel. The got rid of ALL the self-service checkouts so now we're forced to herd like cattle in line. While in line we can often hear cashiers moaning about the management or gossiping about another cashier. Listen, I don't imagine shopping in a grocery store to be amazing or luxurious by any means, but I always feel badly for the employees and wish I could help their situation. I mean, it's a typical-ish grocery store and I have a lot of the same complaints that others have already mentioned (long lines, odd organization of products, customer service, etc.) Plus, being originally from Florida, I've been spoiled by Publix. HOWEVER, during Saturday's crazy rain storm, I watched an employee, stationed just outside the front doors with two umbrellas, walk person after person to their car. Way to go, Jewel-Osco! I am lucky enough to have a car, and I think I will use it to go to another grocery store. I used this one, but I find it run-down and poorly managed. I know late-nights aren't usually too crowded for grocery stores, but this one is near a college, so there are lots of hungry people around. Each time I have been in there, the lines are just SO long because they only have one or two registers open, despite the obvious crowd. There is a bank in the store, which isn't all that unusual, but it is right near the main aisle and always creates a jam. read more

So, I hate this place. However, I keep going back because I'm a college student without a car and a limited budget, and don't have a cheaper option. That said, this place sucks. Service is poor. Every time I go in, the meat counter never had anyone there to get stuff out of the case. I usually wait 4-5 min before someone figures out I need help. Now I have figured out they have a service bell, but the average customer won't know it is there. The aisles are crammed and people are always running into me. They don't have enough check lanes, so the lines back up into the aisles. Not only do I wait in line for awhile, but I have to avoid other customers trying to shop while waiting to check out. On top of all this, the cashiers are not very friendly. Also, I can't buy alcohol there. I am 22 years old. They have a policy that they won't sell to anyone with an "under 18" vertical license. My DOB says I'm 22. I can get into any bar or casino in Chicago, but I can't buy a six pack of beer at Jewel. I'm sorry I don't want to pay for a new license when my current 100% valid ID isn't expired. Basically, I go back for the price and convenience. I dread every time I come in here. If I had another choice, I would shop elsewhere. read more

This is the closest 'affordable' grocery store to where I live. I shopped here for months, until I recently got access to a car. They get a low review because their prices aren't particularly good, and their 'fresh food' isn't very fresh at all. On multiple occasions I've bought produce (packaged and not) only to bring it home to find it is rotten... If you have to shop here, make sure that you check EVERY piece of fruit or vegetable carefully because they don't change them over very often. read more

Very clean and well kept, especially for a city grocery store. Well lit, and a huge selection as well as a huge store, very very spacey, which is nice because it doesn't feel like they've tried to cram everything into a small store. Everything you could possibly need, from school supplies to (some) gardening equipment, hot food (even a Chinese take out place inside), a deli which is well-stocked, a full blown pharmacy, a TCF bank, photo center, you've really got it all! The deli is great and I'm a huge fan of their Chef's Kitchen chicken, its cheap but you wouldn't know it by tasting it! Definitely one of the largest, nicest, cleanest well done Jewel's I've been in. I have been shopping at this store since the 1980's. It used to be a really nice store. Over the years, I have seen many changes, not all of them good. A few months ago, they rearranged the store aisles (again), moved some departments around, installed short-order cashiers in the front of the store, that also includes a small customer service desk. The aisles are almost impossible to navigate (not much width). The produce section is ridiculous--mostly, no space for two shopping carts to pass. In other areas, so many displays and stuff blocking the larger aisles that it takes longer to get around. For example, at the "express" registers near the entrance to this store, they set up a table display with bakery goods on it. REALLY? This is how the customers get in/out of your store....! How annoying. And it continues throughout this store. Other shoppers talk and complain. I've talked with the manager there a few times. I give up. This store is only six blocks from where I live. I spent an *hour* shopping for just eight items today. Really. I'm disgusted, and will be shopping in the Wilmette store, Valli, or even Whole Foods going forward. read more

This is not one of the better Jewel stores by a long shot, but some of the reviews on here are just ridiculous. Yeah, they allow Streatwise sellers at the main entrance, but I've never seen them harass anyone. Some of the customers can be weird and/or annoying at times, but that just goes with the location. This is Evanston near Dempster, after all. My main gripe with this store is the low quality of the help. Not friendly or helpful in general. Sometimes borderline hostile. Not as bad as a lot of people claim. Maybe I'm used to really awful supermarkets in California, but this is just average to me. It's the most convenient non-upscale grocery store to Northwestern (I ain't fancy enough to frequent Whole Foods, yo!), so I come here a good amount. Alcohol here is actually typically the same price as Binny's when it's on sale, so that's a plus. They sell CTA cards here (the unlimited 1-day, 3-day, 7-day cards, etc.). At first, I was going to write a glowing review since it is one of my main grocery stores, but lately, it's left otherwise to be desired. The products are decent and decently priced - their catering section is easy to work with (food is another story though) and lately, customer service up front has been disappointing. I'd rather go through the self check-out than deal with poor customer service of people snapping at me, and poor bagging of my groceries. I thought that it was common knowledge not to put cans in the same bag as a carton of eggs, but apparently, not. It does have a nice parking lot which is redeeming and we do exchange our gas tank here for a pretty affordable price (it's cheaper here than Home Depot or Lowe's), but the panhandlers outside of this Jewel I find to be incredibly annoying and they never let up almost to the point of harassment. But on an up note, I once ordered catering from them and they were super helpful, useful, definitely affordable and the food was great. read more

Walked down the ice cream aisle, one frozen food door completely opened, pallet with frozen food boxes on it in middle of aisle, and employee on his phone texting. This place is a serviceable grocery store. Their healthy-food alternatives are patchy - props for organic yogurt, but their Morningstar/Boca selection is tiny and the produce isn't great. They also have some products in strange, non-intuitive places, but perhaps that's just based on my own intuition. It didn't help that I came here on a Sunday afternoon. As a rule, I don't suggest it. Its a grocery store chain so I'm sure all has already been said. I've sold my soul to Intl Fresh Market, but still end up here occasionally. I get stared at more here than any other place in the city, it keeps things interesting. They've got a huge section of Kosher goodness if thats what you need, and they are in the process of renovating the store- section by section. I have even been able to find a few items not common to the Chicago area, which was awesome. read more

This Jewel is great if you want/need kosher food. Otherwise, I find it much too frustrating to shop here. The lines are always long, it seems. The shelves are empty of popular sale items on the first day of the sale very often. I, at times, have found shelves empty of what I consider to be staple items. I really dislike the remodel they have done. In particular, they have moved the soda to the same aisle as the coolers for orange juice, cheese, butter and other staples. It not only just looks "wrong" for some reason, it makes shopping with children harder than it has to be. It just feels random when I am in there. Random and disorganised. It seems dim too. Slowly but surely the are getting rid of every thing we love from here. We're not sure if it's a plot to slowly drive us mad or just a sheer coincidence; but we've learned not to love anything here because as soon as we do it will disappear. As far as grocery stores go, this jewel has a meager collections but it is cheap, close and convenient and in the true American way, that keeps bringing us back to it. Beware all new comers to the area, there are people sitting out front on occasion looking for some sucker to reply. They don't want you're money, they just want the food your money pays for. I'm all for helping people out, but their location seem a little more thought out than it should be. read more

The people at this Jewel could not care less about their jobs. I've had cashiers unwilling to bag my groceries, even AFTER they've completely rung me up, people at the bakery who couldn't care less about packaging my fragile items, and a front line manager who clearly didn't care at all when I told him the popcorn on the end cap expired in December & twice I've bought packaged fruit only to get home and discover it was bad.
