Mark Beauchamp of Jewelry by Design made my anniversary + wedding ring dream come true. When I got married, I chose to wear only my engagement ring, since it was so beautiful both on top and in the intricate detail along the sides. I never cared for the wedding band it had originally been paired with. I decided I'd design a custom wedding band for a future anniversary, if I ever felt moved to. Years passed, and I never did, until after a trip to Italy for a major anniversary, when I finally decided to take ten diamonds from a family ring and design two jackets, one for each side of my engagement ring, with five diamonds apiece. Given the shape of my original ring and the need to fit five diamonds on either side, it ended up being a fairly large, striking design. Mark understood exactly what I wanted right from the start. He created a mold so I could visualize the design and confirm it was truly what I envisioned. He also suggested that the center ring remain a separate, detachable piece rather than being fused into one unit, since he felt the three rings would sit better together that way. I came in to see one of the side rings once it was made with the diamonds set, so I could approve the design before he continued. From there, he worked remarkably fast. I had my center ring back within days, and the complete set within two weeks. I ended up with exactly what I wanted. I later had the rings soldered together, since I use my hands constantly and wanted everything to stay perfectly aligned. Mark completed this task with expert precision as well, and at no extra cost. I knew going in that adding the side jackets would mean my center ring wouldn't stand out quite as prominently on its own, but that was a tradeoff I was happy to make for the finished design. From start to finish, Mark both validated my vision and offered thoughtful suggestions along the way. He also did beautiful fine engraving on the sides of the rings to help everything match seamlessly. It's a ring I love wearing every day, and my husband loves it, too. When you know you know. My boyfriend and I bought an antique engagement ring that needed too much structural work to save the original setting. We stumbled upon Mark Beauchamp's store front inside the jewelry exchange. He welcomed us in with a smile even though we had not scheduled an appointment. He took the time to listen to our concerns, drew us a picture of what he envisioned for the rebuild of our ring, and he even welcomed us back to check out the wax mold he custom-created before casting the new setting in case we needed any adjustments. He delivered far beyond our expectations. One of my main concerns of a new setting was the original setting that was in disrepair; it would be hard to replicate and I fell in love with that look. Mark made sure to keep the new setting close to the original. He included time period accurate details on the new ring, and he even suggested some additions that I agree improved the look of the ring. For instance, the diamonds along the side of the ring and the details along the band. In addition, he made sure to find diamonds from the correct time period that match my existing diamonds. Mark is so low key I could barely realize I was being gifted with his creativity. He used my deceased husband's gold wedding band to make a dainty ladies ring for me by adding a clobachan emerald. Even though he reduced the width of the band, he preserved the inscription which showed me the personal care he puts into his work. Several months prior, he added a clobachan emerald to my Celtic patterned wedding band. So happy with my experience with Mark at Jewelry By Design! He listened to what I wanted and I am so happy with the result. I had a Komodo Dragon tooth that I wanted made into a necklace. I wasn't sure who could help with an unusual job like this. I contacted two different jewelry artists on Etsy (who make tooth pendants) and neither was available. I was afraid that if I went to a jeweler, they would be condescending / not want to work with something like an animal tooth (as opposed to gemstones). But Mark was welcoming and friendly and totally game to take on the job. The best part is that Mark made the necklace exactly as I requested. He came up with lots of ideas for other beautiful designs (gemstones, shapes, patterns, metals), but I specifically wanted something simple and delicate, which is what he made. Mark is simply amazing and designing jewelry with him was frankly just the most fun experience, some of the most fun I had in the whole engagement process honestly! I don't have a great artistic streak, but I wanted to do something personal for my now-wife. I came to Mark with pictures I found online, some terrible sketches, and a rambling attempt to convey my vision--Mark turned it into a reality. We sat down, talked through what I'd made, and figured out the parts of the design that were important and how to blend all the ideas I had into a cohesive vision. Mark brought in practical design aspects I hadn't even considered--he asked my wife's occupation, which is healthcare, and designed the rings to have no corners or edges that would catch gloves coming on and off at work [a feature she appreciates daily]. We sat together iterating as Mark freehand sketched rings and concepts until we had something amazing. Mark made a 3D wax model, which we used to iterate the fine points of the design, and then--a ring! I was thrilled to take my fiancé back to Mark together for all of us to come together on a design for her wedding bands and my wedding ring. She had just as much fun or more imagining designs for my ring. It turned out to be quite an intricate design. The center band is a simpler, yellow gold sinusoid (an homage to my degree and work). The outer bands are weaving, white gold leaves to parallel the nature-inspired facets of my wife's rings. Each leaf is different, a different shape, a different sprout, different veins, and a different way of nestling its tip back into the band. The ring still surprises me sometimes when I get to see a different part in a different way just because it spun that way today. Mark's creativity (indeed, check out the settings of the purple sapphires on my wife's rings, hidden in the vein of the leaf in a way you wouldn't even realize was a setting!) has made us something incredibly unique and treasured. I hope you all get to have as much fun with him as we did. Finally, I would be remiss if I didn't highlight Mark's unique gem collection and his ability to source stones. I came in planning purple highlights of amethyst, for my wife's birth stone and favorite color. Mark warned me off amethyst, as it is relatively soft for daily jewelry and scratches easily. Instead, he suggested purple sapphire, a robust, beautiful, and vibrant stone. I've since learned it is also quite a rare stone, but Mark had them at the ready. The main diamond was also not an easy ask, the marquise being a rarer cut, but again Mark came through with, finding a beautiful set of options and helping me through understanding some of the nuances of the different diamonds available. We came to Mark via reviews on Yelp. We were looking to upgrade my bride's original wedding set using stones we had inherited. We had some idea of what we wanted, but Mark brought the perspective of an artist and the skills of a craftsman to give us a completely renewed and enhanced wedding set. We met with Mark in his office/studio and talked through our ideas. He offered, "What if we did this?" and drew us a picture of what he was thinking. That's the artist. We were impressed! He showed us financially attainable visions of that 37-year-old wedding set that we had not even imagined. We were thrilled with his visions and gave him the 'go ahead' to create the ring. The craftsman produced a ring that prompted my bride to exclaim when she saw it for the first time on her finger, "Wow! Wow! Just wow!" As the original diamond was coming out of the original wedding set, Mark had a suggestion as to how we could utilize that diamond. He drew for us his vision of enhancing an existing pearl ring that my wife has had for years. It holds sentimental value and with Mark's reimagining, it is now stunningly gorgeous and retains the sentimentality of now having the original diamond from her wedding set as part of the ring. He actually completely rebuilt the band of the ring as it was thin and sharp and not conducive to being worn. The end result is amazing. The final ring was a ring from the late 1930s that is a family heirloom. It went to Mark looking like a nice ring with a lot of sentimental value. After Mark replaced some of the damaged diamonds and resoldered a component of the ring, and polished the entire thing, and it is now an unabashedly eye-catching piece. Bottom line is this, Mark Beauchamp is fabulous! He is an artist with vision, and he is a craftsman with prodigious skills! He created beautiful rings for us that we simply could never have imagined! I came here for my wife's wedding ring, and we couldn't have asked for a better jeweler. We had general ideas in mind (emeralds making a sort of flower petal shape, diamonds on the band, heart shapes you could see through, and a mirrored version for symmetry). Mark drew up several designs based on our descriptions, until we landed on something we really liked. He borrowed (and cleaned) the engagement ring to fit a handmade model of our design to it. Mark was able to make a couple rounds of edits to the model to really make it perfect. He gave us our official quote and asked for a pretty reasonable deposit as he needed to order a few more triangular emeralds. After a couple weeks, Mark showed us one ring of the set, and mentioned that the emeralds ordered were nicer than what he had on hand. So, he had gone ahead and ordered a few more of that quality to make sure it matched and didn't raise the quote despite the increase in production costs. He completed the set, and we are 100% satisfied. It's held up phenomenally over the past nine months, and my wife gets tons of compliments on it. Mark did an absolutely fantastic Job designing this hummingbird pendant for my wife on our anniversary! This platinum hummingbird in flight represents my wife's mother. The pink diamond eye is my wife's birthstone. The Kunzite body is a rare tourmaline stone that was mined by our Daughter in our local San Diego mountains that we had cut to fit into the hummingbird. The aquamarine tale stone is both our Son and my birthstone, so it's super special and represents everyone in our family. Of course we had to find at least an 18K gold chain because anything less irritates my wife's sensitive skin and Mark was able to come through with that request as well. After losing the stone from my engagement ring twice, my husband and I decided that a bezel setting was probably a better option for my lifestyle than the traditional four pronged setting on my old ring. I went back to Mark for a repair on a chain that was broken. Not only did he finish the repair 3 days earlier than expected but when I picked up the item I thought he had just replaced the chain all together. Mark not only cleaned but also plated the chain so that it would not tarnish in future. I have worn this chain for 15 years and almost never take it off as it holds my dogs tooth. So there was 15 years of oil, soap, etc built up on it. Now it looks totally new. Mark at Jewelry by Design helped me a few years ago getting some beautiful diamond ear rings for my wife. She loves them, she was shopping around for similar ones before I employed Mark but was unable to find something specific that she wanted. She wanted the backing of the earrings to have a screw instead of the one that pulls off.
