The setting on my wedding ring needed to be tightened, so my husband and I drove around only to be told by most places that they would need at least a week so that they could deliver it to their jeweler for the work to be done. My ring has 4 small prongs on it, which shouldn't take a week to tighten. One jewelry store quoted us $38 and they needed a week to do the job...no thank you! We found Rock N Gold on Yelp and decided to stop by at the end of the day. This store can be easy to miss, but it's located in the strip mall right next to Rockler Hardware. Upon entering, we were greeted by a very friendly woman (I'm assuming she's Simon's wife). You can tell this is a family run business as two adorable kids came out to chat with other customers, but there is still a professional air in the store. Simon came out to talk to my husband and I about my ring, and he was so knowledgeable and friendly! He was the only person who actually had a discussion with me about other possible options for making my setting more secure. It was very clear in talking with him that he knows what he's doing and he's passionate about what he does! I was going to happily pay for Simon to tighten the prongs on my ring, but he ended up doing it for free and it only took him about 5 minutes! My husband and I were so impressed with the level of customer service and expertise that Simon exemplified. It is hard to find a quality jeweler anywhere. There are jewelry stores all around that sell quality products, but that is not the same thing as a jeweler. A jeweler can custom fabricate jewelry and that is complicated because they work with fire and high temperatures, noxious chemicals and high overhead. I have never seen a true jeweler in a mall. He used to do all the work himself, and is a GIA graduate, but he has a small team of craftsmen that work with him now, so he can keep up with demand. Rock n Gold is open on Saturdays, which is very convenient. The location is very accessible from most of San Diego County. RnG specializes in crafting unique works of art made for the discriminating collector or someone looking for that true "one-of-a-kind" piece. If you do know what you want in a pre-made, commercial piece, Simon can probably get it for you at a very reasonable cost. Simon is professional, skilled and as honest as the day is long. Speaking from personal experience only, he has provided nothing but integrity and top quality work and product on every occasion, small dinky work that no other shop in town would touch without a high minimum charge, to highly detailed pieces that required hours of work. I took some scrap gold jewelry in to Rock-n-Gold to get a quote. My plan was to get quotes from several places and go with the best one. The person we dealt with (presumably the owner) was very professional and friendly; after a lengthy examination, he explained in some detail what we had brought in and how much he was willing to pay. His determination of the gold content for each piece was accurate, even on a couple of odd items with no makers marks. We walked out with a paper quote. The other places we went to (e.g. Leo Hamel) were a joke by comparison; they were unprofessional, underhanded and in some cases outright dishonest. Even if their quotes had come in higher (which they didn't) I would probably have gone back to Rock-n-Gold for the sale anyway. When we returned to make the sale, we were treated in the same professional manner as on our initial visit and left with a check on a downtown bank which we cashed without a problem that same day. Next time I have some scrap gold to unload (I wish) I'll probably go straight to Rock-n-Gold and save myself a lot of time and hassle. read more

This update has been filed with the San Diego chapter of the Better Business Bureau: I have spoken with Mr. Mattar and it has resulted in further worrying discrepancies. These discrepancies are as follows: 1. The postmark on the hand-addressed envelope containing my check for the gold was dated January 27, 2017. This refutes his claims of having mailed out my check approximately two full weeks prior. This gives further credence to the possibility he sold my gold at a higher price than what was given me. 2. Mr. Mattar has not given me the proper documentation regarding quantities, dates, his net profits, and third party receipt of sales of my precious metals as requested in my effort to remedy his business discrepancies. Rather, he submitted me a minimalist printout which could have been back-dated easily via any Microsoft Word program. In addition, while my check for $xx,xxx was dated 01/13/2017, there is little proof he did not also back-date the check as the check was generated by him. This begs the question as to why the postmarked date of the envelope reflected a full TWO WEEK delay from the date the check was supposedly created and mailed especially in light of the fact gold prices have risen considerably upon my request to sell. Mr. Mattar needs to produce a third-party receipt for the sale of my precious metals and the accounting records which could clear his name and reflect in detail why he lied to me. read more

I was very happy with my experience at Rock N Gold. I came in with several gold pieces of varying quality looking for cash. The employee looked at each piece carefully and correctly identified all the carats and the glass rubies no problem. He cleaned and examined all my diamonds and was able to save the larger and more quality diamonds from the melting pot. I never felt "scammed" or hustled at all.
