I did not immediately leave reviews or make public comments because I wanted to give him the opportunity to address the situation directly. Unfortunately, that opportunity was never taken. For $480, I expected a higher standard of work and customer service. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Masaki.

Appointments became rushed, started late, and lacked even basic professionalism. You're barely greeted when you walk in, and the overall tone makes it feel like you're inconveniencing them just by being there. I told them multiple times I had a head injury from a concussion and the lack of care was very concerning how abrasively they washed and handled my head. My most recent appointment was a complete failure. I asked for a warm, golden brown and came prepared with multiple reference photos. While the color was processing, I clearly flagged that it was pulling purple. That concern was dismissed, and the product was left on longer. The result was the darkest my hair has ever been, almost black with a cool, purple hue. The exact opposite of what I requested. The color job is all mismatched, the lower part of my hair significantly darker, the roots are sloppy and uneven. When I pointed this out, the response was defensive and dismissive. At one point, I was sarcastically asked if I wanted to "bleach it," which is an inappropriate and careless suggestion for already fine hair. It was mind blowing to have this handled so poorly and then be rushed through a cut that does not look anywhere close to the quality of the past cuts. I followed up requesting a refund, given that this will take months to correct and fade, and received no response for over 48 hours. It's not even about the money - it's about the severe lack of respect. What's most surprising is that this level of defensiveness and lack of accountability was unacceptable, especially after such a grave mistake. Instead of thoughtful adjustment and ownership, the response was dismissive in the moment and silent afterward. Mistakes happen. How they're handled is what defines a business. This was not handled well. NYC has no shortage of salons that can deliver both technical skill and professionalism. This is not one of them. I had arrived an hour before my appointment and Rob was gracious enough to connect me with Marisa. She had agreed to do both my cut and color. While I was reluctant at first , since I hadn't remembered reading much about Marisa, I am actually glad that Dustin wasn't available because Marisa has just earned herself a lifelong client. Marisa and I sat down and discussed what exactly I was looking for. It was my first time getting a color job done in a salon so I was very nervous and wasn't sure what to expect. I have a small round face and was looking to get a fringe cut with some highlights or an ombre. Marisa took a look at the pictures I had saved on my phone for reference and was instantly able to visualize the perfect cut and color style for me. Mind you, she is the only hair stylist to date that has NOT turned me down for a full on bang/fringe cut. I had asked for a fringe cut before from other stylists and they had all said that my face was too small and the cut would not look on my face. Boy, were the wrong-- I look gorgeous! ;) I ended up going with chestnutty highlights and bangs across my forehead with deep layers. Marisa was patient in explaining all my questions about the process and how to manage my hair after. Since I lack visualization skills, I heavily leaned on Marisa's expertise and skills-- I went with her choice of highlight colors. We were both on the same page. I was looking for a natural, subtle look that was definitely noticeable. 3 hours later, I came out of that salon as a new woman. I was absolutely floored by my new hairstyle and the lack of maintenance it would need. Marisa had also suggested and noted a few products I should get to keep the salon look fresh. She also had me sold on the moroccoan oil products that they had both used on my hair and sold at the salon. My hair cut was about $300. Cut is usually about $85 and coloring is $215 without tax. On a side note, I love everyone here. Everyone is so friendly and amazing. The owner Petra (?) does cuts alongside everyone else and is just a great character. Nick the guy who shampooed my hair is also a total sweetheart! Not to mention, the place is cozy and cute -- not one of those snobby, too-cool-for-school looking places that you always pass by in Manhattan. I can say with confidence that I will not be going anywhere else for my cuts and color.

When I returned at 11:00 am, he was working on someone else and I still had to wait. When he did come over to me, he was only mildly apologetic. He asked what I was hoping to get done, and I described that I'd like to trim my bangs (which were a whispy fringe), trim my long layers, and trim the ends of my hair by about an inch. He didn't ask for a reference photo and got straight to cutting. He cut my hair dry, which I had never had done before and did not ask for. He proceeded to thin my hair with his scissors at severe angles and barely touched my bangs. After the dry cut, I was shampooed by the receptionist, who only applied shampoo to the front of my head. Then, he dried my hair without any heat protectant--drying my bangs down and flat against my forehead--and cut my bangs from there. I kept having to nitpick the bangs themselves because they were uneven and blunt. Long story short, my hair is thin, my layers are choppy, my bangs are ragged, and my ends are split--he essentially gave me a wolf cut, unprompted. I have never had such a bad salon experience or sloppy haircut in my life. I walked in there with long, thick, wavy hair and came out with a rats nest--choppy layers that stop at my chin and essentially a mullet--that I don't think I can fix. I should have said "forget it" when they offered me the free haircut. Do not go here if you want a proper haircut or to be treated like a proper client.
