    A BEAUTIFUL SILK PRESS & TRIM !!
    Samira M.

If there were an option, I'd put 10 out 10 stars!! Julies salon is a gem! From the moment you enter, the atmosphere was gold & everyone had a kind spirit & down-to earth personalities, which makes you feel very welcomed! They have a very cool system, that flows well, when it comes to the process of getting your hair done! My experience in all was great, and very informative! I got a shampoo & olaplex treatment with a lovely trim to top it all! I can definitely say as this being my first OFFICIAL silk press, it's the first of many!! & Thank you So much to the ladies who did my hair

    Silk press

Worth every penny!!!! I didn't know going to the salon could actually be a good experience. Showed up to my appointment on time and was greeted right when I walked in. The stylist took time to properly and gently detangle my hair. I have very thick hair and was in and out in 2 hours. This salon will be my go to for my trims and silk press. Great customer service and did not have heat damage.

    Finished product....

It has been 4 days since my hair experience at JHB studios and I finally feel like I can articulate my experience. I was very disappointed with my hair cut and actually ended up going straight home following my studio visit to wash my hair of the products which left my hair extremely dry and brittle and actually shaved my hair completely down as I could not think of another way to salvage it. This review is not a slander campaign as there were parts of my experience that were pleasant enough; but, I hope it can help to improve the process if possible as well as enlighten others who are trying to decide whether this salon is for them. Process of booking: Easy and efficient. Booked online about 1 week prior to my appointment. I spoke to someone named Sue who was polite. Reception: Good. When I arrived, I was welcomed by Sade who was also very polite. She gowned me and offered me a beverage and as I was early, engaged me in light conversation. Hair experience: Fair/Poor. I was brought to the sink 10 min prior to my appt time and my hair was washed. During the process, while chatting with the person shampooing my hair, I mentioned wanting a cut and curl. It was then that I realized that protocol was to cut the hair first then shampoo. This made a huge difference, since I had to sit under the dryer for 30 min after the shampoo to re-dry my hair, and by the time I went to meet Julie, my hair had shrunk and was very hard and brittle. Of note while shampooing my hair, I asked about hair products being used since this was my first time natural and I wanted to learn about care for my natural hair, and was told I would be shown later or could talk to Julie about it. Julie: So upon meeting Julie, she asked me what I wanted for my hair. I showed her the pictures which seemed to gravitate toward a tapered cut look. It hard to tell what she was thinking but I got the sense of a bit of annoyance. She was polite but prompt to tell me that the hairstyle and textures I presented were on people with other types of hair and that she would do her "best" but "I needed to embrace my curl pattern", and to "tell her exactly what I wanted since she did not want me to be disappointed at the end". This did not make me feel completely confident since I had my ideas but also trusted her expertise to improvise whatever style I wanted to suite my hair/ features. While she began cutting, I tried to engage her in conversation in particular about different hair products which could be useful for my hair. This is when I was surprised when she snapped that "she needed to concentrate on cutting my hair cut" and "for me to keep my gown in place" and that we could talk about it after the cut. Again this did not make me feel comfortable as again this visit was $ 200 and we could not even spend 5 minutes on pre-gamming for appropriate hair cuts that could suit me or hair products that I could use after? She took out scissors and began to cut and shave. I was shocked at how it looked as it seemed to accentuate all of my weak spots. I.e. thinning edges which she said we could cover with edge control. I trusted the process and went along. She shampooed me and lastly put gel in my hair and again sent me to sit under the dryer. It was about 12:30pm and she seemed to disappear for a while, and upon return began to perm someone else's hair. It seemed like I was drying for about an hour when the timer was up. I felt my hair which was hard as a rock but again waited patiently. She finally acknowledged me and took off my net. I was shocked. The hair was poorly shaped, hard; the gel gave my hair a flaky kind of look. She took out scissors and cut a few stray hairs. I tried to make sense of it and before I could really process, but she had already moved on to the next customer. Her secretary however was immediately on hand to process my payment. I thanked her politely even though I was dying inside and left and burst into tears by the elevator. She did not talk to me about hair products, upkeep, or anything. I felt like just another number and a huge loser for traveling 4 hours and paying $200+ dollars for a hair cut which did absolutely nothing for my confidence, hair texture, First time going natural at JHB salon was a fail!!!! Things from this experience - Perhaps a consultation would have been appropriate beforehand. Again I drove 4 hours to NYC on my day off which did not make it possible. I would have liked to hear an honest assessment about my hair and thoughts about what she thought would have suited me. Even if she thought it would have been better to shave all the way down due to damage or choose another style, I would have been open to feedback but none was given. Also it would have been appreciated to talk about hair products even on the fly as I asked twice during my appointment. I can't recommend her for someone who wants to go natural without silk press/perm with more kinky textures i/e. 4b/4c hair based on my experience.

Are the prices reasonable ? What should I expect to pay for a wash trim and style?

I'm not going to lie to you, it is expensive. She's in Chelsea, so I'm sure that why she charges a bit more. I say expect to pay between $200-$275. This is just for Basic Wash, Condition and Detangle, blow dry and trim. I'm not sure what it would be…

I paid $480 for my appointment and left with hair that looked patchy and not like what we had discussed. While disappointing results can sometimes happen, what bothered me most was the complete lack of communication afterward. I reached out to Masaki on May 13 regarding my concerns and attempted to resolve the issue privately. I never received a response. It has now been about a month, and despite giving plenty of time for a reply, I have been ignored. I did not immediately leave reviews or make public comments because I wanted to give him the opportunity to address the situation directly. Unfortunately, that opportunity was never taken. For $480, I expected a higher standard of work and customer service. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend Masaki.

Updating my review: I used to come here because the haircuts were strong, but over time the…read moreexperience deteriorated significantly. Appointments became rushed, started late, and lacked even basic professionalism. You're barely greeted when you walk in, and the overall tone makes it feel like you're inconveniencing them just by being there. I told them multiple times I had a head injury from a concussion and the lack of care was very concerning how abrasively they washed and handled my head. My most recent appointment was a complete failure. I asked for a warm, golden brown and came prepared with multiple reference photos. While the color was processing, I clearly flagged that it was pulling purple. That concern was dismissed, and the product was left on longer. The result was the darkest my hair has ever been, almost black with a cool, purple hue. The exact opposite of what I requested. The color job is all mismatched, the lower part of my hair significantly darker, the roots are sloppy and uneven. When I pointed this out, the response was defensive and dismissive. At one point, I was sarcastically asked if I wanted to "bleach it," which is an inappropriate and careless suggestion for already fine hair. It was mind blowing to have this handled so poorly and then be rushed through a cut that does not look anywhere close to the quality of the past cuts. I followed up requesting a refund, given that this will take months to correct and fade, and received no response for over 48 hours. It's not even about the money - it's about the severe lack of respect. What's most surprising is that this level of defensiveness and lack of accountability was unacceptable, especially after such a grave mistake. Instead of thoughtful adjustment and ownership, the response was dismissive in the moment and silent afterward. Mistakes happen. How they're handled is what defines a business. This was not handled well. NYC has no shortage of salons that can deliver both technical skill and professionalism. This is not one of them. Updating this with a pic and additional NYC HAIR SALON SEO terms so future customers are warned since the salon has decided to block me after no satisfactory resolution. The pic at the top right was me pre-hair f*** up. Only come to this salon if you'd like to come home and cry.

This was their "best advice for me" and that I should come back and get both together. I only needed a haircut and this was the only chance I got (I am a SAHM with 2 kids and minimal backup except this day) so I said I would consider it but I need a cut now. It was 6 months since my last. That must have just not been the right thing to say bc I was judged, insulted during the entire session and I got the worst haircut of my life. I can't even get it fixed because it is so much shorter than I wanted. There are huge "texture" discrepancies all over my hair, the most obvious being in the back near my neck. There's also a strand of hair far longer than the entire length of my bob cut. I don't even understand how this happened. I'm so traumatized. I would never recommend this place and will never ever come back. I really had 1 chance to get a cut as a treat to myself, since I really don't have extra time to spare. And now I have to live with this until it grows out, definitely more than 6 more months. If I could give -1000 stars, I would. Please do yourself a favor and find a salon that can do a nice cut for long AND SHORT hair. WITHOUT A PERM TO MAKE IT ALL STRAIGHT FIRST. The skill level here is just so sub par. I could have done it myself.

On top of that, they charged me for a haircut I never asked for. During the balayage, the stylist cut/thinned (no idea what he did because he never asked me) some of my hair (maybe 10 "snips"?) and they later charged me an additional $70 for the "haircut." This really pissed me off because in the middle of my appointment, I even heard an assistant ask in Mandarin "is she getting a haircut?" and the stylist shook his head. I was really unhappy with my hair that I went to get a hair treatment (for the dry, damaged hair) and toner at a different salon a week later. That stylist even asked "who did your hair?"
