Love hair rules and I love their products!! Although my visit was a little while ago I still wanted to leave a review! Anthony and his team are awesome. Very easy to make an appointment and find the shop. I went to Dickey for a new color and cut! What I loved about the experience is that you get to feel special like a celeb lol. Didnt have to say much of how I wanted my hair and Dickey just worked his magic and gave me an awesome manageable cut. He educates you during the process giving tips for your hair texture and how to maintain moisture etc. He also gave great pointers for how to get poppin' curls. If I didnt move across the world after my first experience with Hair Rules I would have definitely been a regular customer. I must say though I loove loove lovvee the quench ultra shampoo/conditioner. Its seriously like no other product. I was using ogx prior (and when I run out of hair rules) but his products really are moisturizing. Great slippage, non-drying. I dont feel like the oils of my hair are stripped upon application and I swear even with the conditioner alone my curls are well defined. I typically add a little curly whip at the end which keeps my hair frizzless (?) lol. The only product I had trouble using after my salon visit was the blow it out cream. I just felt it made my hair sticky even using a dime sized amount so unfortunately that product has been sitting on my shelf :( read more

My first time at this salon was back in November 2020 and I got a curly cut and wash and go. Dickie did a great job on my hair and I loved how my hair looked. I went again a couple of months later and Dickie recommended that I wash my hair EVERY single day or it will get "loc'd up" Washing my thick, type 4 hair everyday is not feasible while working full time. I appreciated his advice but I understand my hair more than anyone. He was very rough while detangling my hair and blamed it on me being tender-headed. I decided I needed another trim and booked an appointment for today, July 30th. Upon arriving to the salon early, Dickie complimented my hair length and shape. The lady washing my hair asked how long it's been since I did a wash & go and I told her it was 5 days ago. She immediately got up and left me by the sink. Dickie told me that my hair is "loc'd up and severely knotted" and that I will have to pay extra to detangle. Although I was disappointed and know my hair wasn't loc'd, just very tangled, I understand the policy and agreed to pay more. At the point of detangling, Dickie continuously spoke about how "he works too hard to detangle hair all day" and I need to stop coming to the salon with my hair this way. Like I previously mentioned, I have thick type 4 hair that tangles quickly. My hair was NOT matted or loc'd just tangled. Dickie continuously complained about my hair and then recommended I not continue with the service. I was flabbergasted and extremely disappointed considering I left work early and came from downtown to get this service done. He provided the worst customer service I ever experienced in a hair salon and was incredibly disrespectful. He could've told me before I sat in the chair that he did not want to do my hair. I've never had a hairstylist treat me or my hair in that manner. For this salon to speak about hair inclusivity and different textures, they definitely do NOT know how to work with type 4 hair. When I go to a Black-owned salon I expect them to know how to do ALL hair types and textures. I will never be returning to this salon. First - Let me say Thank you to Dickey and his lovely assistant with the juicy curly hair. Dickey is fabulous. The name of his Salon is Hair Rules for a reason. Dickey gives you a consultation, listen carefully. His instructions are simple and buy and use his products with the RULES he advises/states. He has a list of rules before you arrive at the salon. He certainly does not have time to detangle anyone's hair and it should not be tangled if you been following his RULES or respect your own hair. Dickey certainly knows his profession and knows all the hair types on the spectrum. My visit was June 2023, he asked me if I had ever gone natural with my own kinky natural hair. I said no. Dickey set me up sweet with advice product and the best hair do of my life. It's so easy to manage it's "wash and go "I wash my hair in the shower at 4am every day. I leave the house at 5.15am for work. My hair has grown and I feel thickness in it now, cos no more pulling back in a pony tail, no more weaves, no more clip ins, no more braids, no more hot dryer, no more flat iron, no more product buys that are not effective. Go natural let your hair breath, don't be scared to wash your hair every day and enjoy the natural hair you were born with. If you don't like natural you can always return to your old styling. But I would say treat yourself, your Grandma, your mother, your daughter, your aunt and your niece - go experience Dickey. Follow his HaiRules you will not be disappointed. And if I wanna go slinky and straight I will return to Dickey for that too cos I saw clients leaving with their hair straight and shiny like they had just auditioned for a hair care advertisement, yes he can create the perfect straight too. I've had some negative experiences at Hair Rules (didn't like hair color, receptionist got my appointment time mixed up which resulted in me having to wait an hour to be seen), but this 5-star review is for JASMINE (or Jazzy if you book online). I've only seen her a couple of times, but when I do, girl works some MAGIC. My hair always looks fuller, livelier and healthier and I never have to lose a lot. I typically don't like getting my hair cut because so many stylists get scissor happy, but Jasmine knows how to give a cut without completely sacrificing length. I wanted to make an appointment a month ago, but when I called, I was told that Jasmine's price had gone up. I thought that I could find someone else to do my hair like Jasmine for less. I tried a new natural hair salon in Harlem that only cost $45. Let me tell you - you get what you pay for. So I decided to go ahead and see Jasmine this time. I prepped a slew of pictures for her to help describe the cut I wanted. She kind of glanced at them and sounded like she immediately understood what I was looking for. I was a little nervous at first because she seemed to understand a little TOO quickly. I thought maybe she was overly sure of herself. No. She gave me exactly what I wanted. She went through thoroughly and carefully, cutting each strand with dedication, focus and precision. It's clear that she takes pride in what she does and wants you to take pride in your hair. I could barely contain my smile afterward and quickly sent pics to my family and friends. Also - just some side notes about my latest experience at Hair Rules: Shoshanna is the only person in all of my years of going to salons that I really enjoyed shampooing my hair. I'm 33, so that's a lot of salons and shampoos. It felt AMAZING, plus she was kind, accommodating and thoughtful. As a new (single!) mom, I barely have time to eat. After dropping my daughter at daycare and waiting for RCN to install my home phone service (which never happened! Another review for another day), I hustled down to the salon, arriving just in time on an empty stomach. I asked the receptionist if I could grab a sandwich and she told me it was fine. I get back and am munching away and Shoshanna said she'd give me time to eat in the waiting area. Jasmine then said it was fine to eat in her chair so she could look at my hair. After asking me what cut I was going for, she said she'd give me the time I needed to eat my sandwich uninterrupted. Letting a customer just sit and eat during her appointment time is practically unheard of. She probably saw how discombobulated and tired I looked and felt sorry for me, but hey, I appreciated it lol. read more

I'm so disappointed in my experience today. I've been to this salon a handful of times for my natural hair. I like Dickey's products & how they care for natural hair. My usual stylist is no longer there, so I went with someone new. Shoshanna was recommended to do my trim & twist out. My appointment was scheduled for 11, I didn't get seen until 12:30. I didn't leave the salon until 5:30. My afternoon fully gone & spent in a hair salon on a Saturday. While Dickey's clients were in & out. Shoshanna had her clients waiting for long periods. One woman left to go home & change for an event that she has later. I had to leave 5 hours into the appointment to get a meal. I kept my composure, but it was evident that I was displeased. The receptionist was kind & gave me a bag of products when I left as a peace offering. When I got home to take a look at my hair, it's full of white specks! The mounds of product that was put in my hair formed flakes & is all through my head like a bad case of dandruff. Today the planning was booked so the only availability was D. (The owner). I have never been so insulted! My appointment was at 3 pm after waiting 1 hour quietly they started. I mentioned the fact that I might leave before 5pm to pick up my son and he told me: "girl don't play with my time" He was really rude and borderline he told me he was " frustrated " (his words) by the way I was speaking. (I am french). The staff even apologized for his behavior. And other clients was also chocked I think by his attitude. I left half head done and crying. Update: Yes making my appointment sucked and made me question if I should even go. However, the stylist I was assigned to made everthing so much better . Her name was Rocqi. She was amazing at explaining what to do with my hair till the next time I see her. I plan on going back for a cut soon. Having someone natural with my hair texture is comforting feeling. You hair gets treated like their own not a fearful project. The phone experience was the complete opposite of the shop experience for me. Orignal: So far a fail with confirmations emails for appointments. I called twice and was rushed off the phone both times. The first receptionist didnt ask for any information or email besides my name and phone number. I made an account online and I didnt see the appointment on my account. I called back again told the receptionist my email and she rushed me odf the phone..3 hrs later, still no email. This was my second time visiting the salon, the first was last year around the same time as this. My apportionment time was at 3pm so I arrived early - maybe around 2:45/2:50 pm because I don't like being late for appointments. When I walked in the assistant had me sit on the couch - at this point, he is doing one woman's hair and there is another waiting (First red flag). Around 3pm (when my appointment was supposed to begin) the assistant told me to go and wash my hands and when I returned to the couch there was another woman who was also waiting - she immediately went and washed her hands and was seated in a chair (second red flag). The woman who arrived after me, but was seated before, was then taken to have her hair washed. I was not put into a booth chair until about 3:15pm and around 3:25pm I was then taken to have my hair washed by the assistant (third red flag). When I returned to my seat the assistant then was the one who blow-dried my hair (I know this can be normal at some salons but I have never had this happen at my normal salon - I am originally from DC but in NY for school - and the first time I came to Hair Rules last year). Additionally, when blow drying my hair the assistant commented on my heat damage - I always wear my hair straight because for ME it is the easiest to maintain due to my busy schedule and the frequency in which I workout - when I explained to her the reason why she understood and dropped the conversation. At 3:48pm I was FINALLY seated in Dickey's chair, by this point I am very annoyed because I have been waiting so long and I would assume for such a "professional hair stylist" he wouldn't triple book himself. When he starts flat ironing my hair he made two comments about my heat damage and when I explained to him the reason why he then made another comment - which was unnecessary and rude at that point. He then asked when is the last time I got my hair cut. I told him the last time I got a haircut was over the summer and a trim in December he made the most disgusted face in the mirror as if my ends are just horrible - and if that was the case then perhaps as a hair stylist he would tell me that he is going to trim it and just charge me ESPECIALLY since his whole brand is focused on his notion of healthy hair. When he was finally done with my hair it looked nice - but like I could have done it myself. When I booked my appointment the price stated online was $125 - and since it is cash only (for whatever reason since he accepts cards for his hair products) I had $145, because I initially planned on tipping before. When I went to pay with the assistant she told me it was $150 and when I told her it was only listed as $125 online she went online and saw that it is listed as $125 she could not explain where the additional cost was coming from. I had to use the ATM in the salon to take out $20, because I was overgoing back in forth with the woman - paid the $150 and left. I will never be returning again, which is unfortunate because I was truly happy with how my hair looked last year when I went but in hindsight, I was only happy because it had the highlights and the haircut that my real stylist gave me a few months before coming to Dickey. read more

Dickey schooled me about the dangers of sulfate shampoo and suggested I use conditioner - long before co washing was a "thing". By the time Dickey opened his salon I was a loyal follower. His growing hands nurtured my hair and it became the healthiest it's ever been, and remains so to this day. He is more than just a great cut and a pretty style - Dickey knows and cares about hair. TL; DR: I started seeing Dickey in August 2018 after a Devacut disaster and have been seeing him every 10 weeks since. My 3B/3A hair has body and definition. I'm very pleased. Last spring, I was looking for a change and let someone talk me into a Devacut. The thing about my hair is it never curls the same way twice. So even though it looked okay in the salon, the next day it looked like a child had taken kitchen shears to my head. I went back to my regular salon to have the layers evened out and wound up the same cut I'd been getting for a couple years, so, while I was no longer ashamed to show my face, I was still feeling frustrated. Plus, the longer my hair got, the more I found myself wanting to go to a salon that specializes in Black hair. I should be able to get a haircut and a roller set in the same location! When I walked into Hair Rules, I was ready to give up and cut all my hair off. I have high porosity curly hair on the top of my head and wavy almost straight hair on the bottom. If the layers aren't cut with this in mind, when the air turns humid the top of my hair becomes a frizzy mess and the bottom hangs lank, giving me the appearance of a haggard mushroom. Dickey took the time to listen to all my hopes (lots of body, and movement) and my fears (mushroom head) and convinced me that my goals were achievable. I liked the shape he gave me and bought all the products Dickey and his assistant used on me. But when I got home, I struggled to get my hair looking the way it had in the salon. I wrote an embarrassingly dramatic email detailing my frustration and received a thoughtful reply with an offer of a complimentary curly lesson. I accepted and returned to the salon, where Dickey graciously spent even more time listening to my frustrations and explaining to me exactly how I needed to care for my hair to get the look I wanted. I'm still following Dickey's suggestions - but I'm no longer using the Hair Rules curling cream as I've discovered a gel cream that gives my curls more bounce. read more

I ask for a lighter color with highlights in the front part. My color is darker, and she actually put highlights on my baby hair!!! who does that?? now I look like i have bald spots. she even but highlights on the thinning part of my hair in the front... ridiculous! The color looks like my hair is dry and ashy. Then she was going to let me walk out the salon looking a hot damn mess. I had to 'try" and style my own hair. I walked out looking worst than I came in. Let me start off by saying I loved the results of my color service with Aimee. I went in with faded brown box dyed hair and left with pretty cinnamon curls, which is exactly what I asked for. If this review were just based on whether or not I liked my color, it would easily be 5 stars. Unfortunately I had to dock points for other things. The first deduction is just for the length of time I spent in the salon. My appointment was at 11:30 and I didn't leave until 4:00. Aimee seemed to have at least 3 or 4 clients at a time. And while she had quick hands, there's only so much you can do when you have 4 heads to color. She apologized for it, and ultimately it wasn't that big of a deal because I didn't have anywhere else to go, but if I had, I most definitely would have been late. I also had to deduct a star because of the way my "wash and go" looked when I left the salon. It was frizzy. Aimee's assistant, who did my wash-and-go, was really sweet and friendly. However, I don't really think she knew how to style my texture (which is really fine and prone to frizz). I sat under a hooded dryer until my hair was completely dry, and then she "styled" it. She blew my hair every which way with a blow dryer while simultaneously raking her fingers through my (dry) curls. No ma'am. I had previously told her I liked volume, but what I got was frizz. Part of that could also be the products though--she used some kind of mousse and I didn't really like the way it felt in my hair. Overall, I'll definitely go back, but that's just because Aimee did such a wonderful job on my color. My wash and go was sub-par (I've been to Christo Fifth Avenue and Devachan and had superb wash and gos at both). Also, from what I saw of their blowouts, I could get the same thing done at a Dominican salon for a lot cheaper. So, 5 stars for Aimee's coloring skills, and 3 stars for everything else. read more

Loved my experience at Hair Rules! I had gotten my first "highlights" a week prior at a different salon. By highlights I mean chunks of orange at my crown. After a week of everyone using every synonym for orange to describe it to make me feel better, I decided I had to get it fixed and no way was I going back to the place that made my hair look like Tony the Tiger. In my research I came across a lot of blogger buzz about Hair Rules. I emailed them explaining my issue and begging for the earliest appointment possible. I got a quick sympathetic response asking my desired time. I said I could come in the next day if that would be ok. The receptionist called to confirm me for the next morning with their colorist Aimee. About the appointment: I got there and they let me know that technically I had to be squeezed in and asked for my patience. They brought me tea while I waited. When Aimee saw my hair she was so sympathetic. She knew just what I needed and explained every step she would take. I didn't show her a picture or anything. I just let her have free reign. It came out amazing! I was worried about over processing, but my hair felt fine. Amber (I think) was my stylist and she was very explanatory. I've been natural for over 4 years so I have a routine, but she gave great pointers that I've incorporated into my routine. All the clients in the salon were congratulating each other on their awesome hair. I immediately sent a selfie to my friends, made my next appointment and left looking/feeling great. Just realized my March 2012 Hair Rules review was removed by Yelp?!?!? Really? Please explain why a thoughtful, honest review was removed (but not the photo I attached in 2012)? Luckily I had posted on my blog: March 29, 2012 I had not worn my hair straight in some time and decided to try out Hair Rules Express Blow Out, which I read was $55. There was a lot of buzz about Hair Rules products, which I had never tried, so I thought the best place to try them would be the salon. When I arrived I checked in with reception and was asked to take a seat. My stylist, forgot her name, came over to get my jacket and offered me a drink. She had a huge, curly afro so I thought I hit the jackpot. I figured someone with natural hair would know how to deal with my hair. I selected tea. When she came back with the tea, I was asked to put on a cape and she went to work examining my hair. While at the sink, she gave me tips about washing my natural hair such as using conditioner and not shampoo (something I already knew). As each product was used on my hair, she let me touch it and smell it as she explained what the product was doing to my hair. It was a bit like an infomercial. My conditioner was added and I was put under the dryer. After my hair was rinsed, it was time for the blow out which was initially painful. After adding the blow dry cream, she combed my hair from root to tip. As she combed out my hair to section it, she also combed from root to tip. I had to take the comb from her to show her how to comb my hair without hurting me. My blowout was finished pretty quickly (I have fine hair) and then she flat ironed it. I did not take note of the type of flat iron used but do know that I was burned by it a couple of times. She put some curls in my hair with the flat iron. Once I was done, she went to write out my "prescription" which noted the products used on my hair. I asked for a trim but was told it would be an additional $85. I passed on the hair rules trim. I paid $57 & change for my express blow out and left a tip. I then went to a Dominican salon for a $5 trim. I later went to the local beauty supply store to buy a comb attachment for my blow dryer since I was pretty confident that I could get better results at home without the burns with my FHI Runway flat iron. February 2016 I went to Hair Rules for a blowout while in between braid styles. A few days prior I booked with Shoshana but it turned out the salon was closed on the day of my appointment, February 15, which I didn't learn until I sent a text to confirm before I left the house. I ended up booking with another young lady, cannot recall her name, for later in the month. She was very gentle with my hair while washing and blowing it out, all the while explaining the products and how to manage my hair. I had a photo I wanted to duplicate of some beachy waves and it was executed perfectly with the curling iron after my blow out. I don't recall the exact price but it was under $60 + tip. I've been to Hair Rules twice. The first time was on a very busy Saturday afternoon. I got a curly style with Monique. It is a very nice place, but it was the weekend and it was snowing and the whole thing felt a little rushed to me , so when the shampoo girl (I forget her name) repeatedly suggested I get my hair cut, I refused. I just didn't want to. Monique suggested it again and I refused again. The curly style technique is cool but doesn't suit my high shrinkage type 4b hair... especially when it was full of split ends had no shape. So anyway, a month went by and I realized I seriously needed a cut. I went back in on a quiet Wednesday evening. Yoshie (who is a total sweetie!) washed and straightened my hair and answered all my nervous questions. Monique gave me a great haircut (see pic). She had to cut kind of a lot because I had gone over a year with no trims and my hair was in pretty rough condition, but I want to echo the person that said Monique is not Edward Scissorhands! I told Monique I want to grow my hair out to her length and she listened to me and gave me good advice (regular trims ! Moisture!) and encouragement. The salon is not cheap but I am gonna stick with it. Monique knows what she is doing and is skilled and no nonsense. I just want to start off by saying that I have never gotten my haircut before, but Dickey was really attentive and helped me work out the issues I had with my hair. Leti was also such a big help and a wonderful presence to have around. For my hair, I wanted to preserve as much length as possible, but most of my problems stemmed from having so much dead hair, so the best option was to do the chop. My hair turned out to be shorter than I thought it would be, but I swear it never looked better! My curls were soft and bouncy, and it framed my face so beautifully. I will start with the positive: kind stylists, comfortable space, and generally a pleasant atmosphere. My 1 star review is connected to the price range and the lack of information I was given on the price until AFTER the service. My close friend had JUST gotten her hair colored at the salon by the same stylist for $120. I went into the salon for a consultation, not knowing the stylist would rush me into beginning my service. I knew I wanted my hair blonde, but I had no clue of the process. I told her, "I have virgin hair, it's super curly, and only an inch long... I have NEVER had my hair colored before." Being that I am a newbie to this process, you would think they would take their time, explain the process and PRICE. After putting the bleach on my hair, an assistant came up to me to sign a waiver form. The waiver form included basic information about my hair and at the bottom a REQUIRED signature with the price range above. I noticed that the price range was BLANK, so I brushed it off thinking, it must be $120, my friend JUST paid that price. The assistant then said in passing under her breath, "we are supposed to have you sign this beforehand, but it's okay..." After completing the service. I was satisfied with the results. I then go up to the desk to pay and they tell me the price is $365! For one inch of hair to be bleached. I understand they did a double process, but I cannot and will NOT accept that they couldn't take their time and PROPERLY do the paperwork before rushing me into the service. I am disgusted. I am disgusted that I waited for an hour to be seen by this stylist. I sat directly NEXT to the desk, and not a single person could take 2 minutes to do the paperwork beforehand. If I would have known the price is $365, I would NOT have paid for this service. I am extremely frustrated by this careless behavior, and the downright sloppiness of a salon that charges $365, but cannot take the time to prep their clients and advertise the price range. read more

My bff and I came in nearly 2 weeks ago on a Saturday to get our hair colored. We both had not colored our hair before ("virgin" hair), and scheduled an appointment online with Aimee. We brought photos/videos of the styles we were both going for. I (3c/4a finer hair) wanted simplistic highlights, my friend (4b/c thick hair) was going for a more bolder ombre look. We both left the salon with something drastically different than what we initially wanted. Aimee took her time and spoke with us at length about our hair and what we wanted. She refused to dye just the bottom/ombre half of my friends hair because she had a trim 4 months ago, instead of 3, and instead suggested a single-process which would color all of her hair. We are still struggling with understanding this rationale. I explained to Aimee that I wanted to keep my darker black/brown hair color, and just add lighter brown highlights toward the front. She suggested lightening my hair a little to a color in the "brown family" and then adding highlights. I got a single-process + few highlights. After Aimee and her assistant lightened my hair & blow dried it, I was extremely nervous about the color. It looked more red/copper than brown, and too light for my liking. The lighting near the washing/coloring stations is poor, so I wasn't sure if that was exacerbating the color of my hair. By this time, the salon became busy. I overheard the receptionist tell Aimee that her 12:00 appointment had arrived (it was 12:30+) and things starting moving very fast. I tried to ask Aimee how much lighter the highlights would be, given that my hair was already pretty light, but she was busy and didn't seem to have the time to have an additional conversation with me. She put highlights in the front half of my hair, washed them out, then processed the other side. She toned my hair, then her assistant washed my hair, and prepped me for a curly style. After sitting under the dryer for about an hour, Aimee's assistant began to "fluff" my hair. My hair was not detangled well during the washing process, as there is only 3 sinks and many people lined up to wash out color etc so I was rushed out. During the fluffing process she tried to detangle my hair, which just made my curls frizzy, and honestly doesn't seem to be the standard practice that Hair Rules teaches/markets. I was really frustrated by this, but I did like the outcome. After my hair was all fluffed and dried, the color just seemed really light, but again the lighting in the salon is so bad, I genuinely didn't know what it actually looked like. I told myself to give it a day or two, that I was likely being overly critical and just wasn't ready for such a big change. When I got home, my fears became my reality. My highlights were uneven, and looked like the orange/blonde color that appears when you accidentally pour bleach on black clothing, not light brown. Half of the highlights were much brighter/lighter than the other side, and were placed really poorly; like in clumps. The front of my hair was carrot top red/copper. The salon is closed on Sunday and Monday so I waited until Tuesday and gave them a call. The receptionist was super sweet and understanding, and fit me in for a same-day appointment for a color correction free of charge. Because Aimee only works 1 week per month, I was placed with Amber who was incredibly sweet. Amber listened intently, heard what I wasn't satisfied with, and asked clarifying questions about what I wanted to change. She told me it was a quick fix, and she & her assistant got to work. She darkened/deepened my roots and my highlights. She would consistently remove some dye to show me what the color looked like while it was processing so that it was where I wanted it to be. She was incredibly patient and caring. Amber's assistant washed, conditioned and prepped me for a curly style. I don't know why, but my hair again wasn't detangled very well, and this time around I didn't like the results of the curly style, however my hair color looked 100 times better. While my hair does look better than the 1st time I left the salon, I'm still not satisfied. Because 1/2 my highlights were originally over-processed, they are still very visibly lighter than the rest, and their placement makes it worse, but I just don't have the time or money to go back, and don't want to risk damaging my hair. Overall I paid $235 for the single-process + few highlights, tipped Aimee 25%, and also tipped Amber (although I didn't have to, but she genuinely deserved it). That's a lot of money to be left with a hair color that you're praying will "grow on you". I can see myself going back to black/dark brown and forgetting this ever happened. I initially was going to give this salon 2 stars, but because of Amber I threw in an extra one. She honestly is a gem. Despite how beautiful, modern, and well-known Hair Rules is, results matter, and I'm not very happy with mine. Best of luck to the rest of you. read more

Don't it it ppl! I wish I had listened to the reviews! Dragged my 16 year old to Dickey's from DC for her birthday. There's a blizzard today - so I wasn't sure if they were open- no one answered the phone when I called five times to check. When we finally arrived, we did so with another woman. After knocking several times Dickey opened the door; he was the only one working in the studio today. He told us to sit down and started working with the other woman. Half an hour after our appointment he was about to wash the other woman's hair. I walked up to him to ask him when he thought he would be able to get to us and he immediately developed the attitude I read about on the Internet. He was rude and condescending and kept saying I was unreasonable for asking when he thought we would get started. He told me "have no doubt I'll have you out of here in an hour." I did not drag my kid from Washington DC for him to rush through a haircut because he doesn't know how to manage time. I told him I was leaving and did so - so .....wasted trip (not really, having a great time). He's a diva, he has terrible communication skills, and must not be as successful as he claims because he's doing hair washing and cutting all by himself. I read others who walked out and were still charged. If he attempts this there will be problems. P.S. he weirdly only takes cash for all hair services, but accepts credit cards for products.. I started going to Hair Rules salon about a year ago; I first saw a junior stylist, then switched to the owner. I was growing out my hair. I had a picture from a few years ago that I showed them. Over the past year, receiving about 4 haircuts from them, I wasn't really happy with the way it looked, but I just chalked it up to the awkwardness of growing out my hair. Two months ago, I went in for a haircut. He totally butchered my hair. I had all of these little stringy things from where he had "cut into the hair to take out the weight." It was a total hack job. I went back in a couple of days later for him to fix it and I just asked him to cut it shorter because I knew he had already ruined my hair. He got defensive and said that "this wasn't the length we agreed to." He was more concerned with being right than making me happy. I told him that I wanted it less round and more square and he said "What do you mean, less round?" Men get square haircuts and women get round haircuts. This is a fundamental rule of hairdressing that he seemed clueless about. He finished the haircut and I knew I would have to go home and fix it further. So, I went home and that's when I saw how horrible of a haircut it actually was. As I went through my hair to fix it, I saw just how disconnected everything was. It was so horrible; probably the worst haircut of my life, for which I paid $100, and lost a year's worth of length. I spent the next month trimming my hair on the weekends, still recovering from what he did. Thankfully my mother was in town one weekend so she could trim the back. I looked like freaking Carol Brady. It's been two months since that haircut and it's finally long enough to go somewhere else. I'm gonna check out Ouidad and see a senior stylist. The owner of Hair Rules was always nice to me, but his mind was always on what was next and never on me. That place is a disaster. Stay away. This Salon was an absolute disappointment. The manager/head stylist (Dicky) has a terrible attitude. He wasn't nice to me. I expected the nice person I saw on YouTube....but he was completely different. He told me my hair was a mess, and that I need to wash it. My hair was clean. Just really dry because I swim daily. He didn't bother to ask. I guess he thought he was being funny or maybe he was entertaining the other customers at my expense. Who knows... I just wanted to be done so that I could leave. I love this salon. So yesterday was my second visit and guess what? It was COMPLEMENTARY. So my first and second visit, i walk in they took my coat and gave me a styling robe to put on. They offer you water, tea, or coffee. During the washing and conditioning of your hair they are explaining what they are doing and ask for you to feel your hair and explain how to maintain at home. They were on-time Explained the process I wasn't there for eternity Jasmine was nice, personable and professional The support staff was friendly and welcoming as well I booked my appointment on- line it was simple and quick I received a follow-up phone call the next day to see if i had any questions or concerns They made me feel welcome. I didn't have to wait forever and a day for another customer to be completed before i could be serviced. I finally saw my curl pattern and i know i to bring it out and maintain it. After my first visit, i was told if i returned within 2 weeks my service would be complementary. And it was. I loved my hair and how i was treated. I booked another appointment 1 month from now. I have to say I agree with Nassy D's review. I was expecting better from the owner. I took my teenage niece over there as a present. we spent 5 1/2 hours and she came out worst than when she arrived. She can do her hair much better than he did it. Her hair was very dry and no shine at all, probably, he uses a cheap shampoo and conditioner. What a waste...He is rude and impolite and he does not like to be asked questions. I was bloody upset he was acting like he was doing me a favor. Dickey is unprofessional. Period. I came in with waist length hair, came out with bra strap length hair. Didn't deep condition my hair then complained how tangled it was. Literally ripping out hair. No grace to it whatsoever. Had a hissy for because I said I didn't want to cut my hair. Was literally screaming in my face. I was crying. Said some bs about how cutting hair accidentally is traumatizing. This experience was traumatizing. Dickey is not a professional person and I felt very judged during the whole experience. Getting your hair done is about what the customer wants. It's unprofessional to have a hissy fit just because I don't want you to cut MY HAIR ON MY HEAD THAT I GREW MYSELF. As a NYC concierge I am always looking for new places to recommend to my clients and this place will definitely be on my list of recommendations. Given the location it's hard to find salons that know what to do with textured hair and I am always on the lookout.The space is gorgeous and the staff is so sweet and offered me refreshments. Yesterday was my first experience at HairRules and it definitely wont be my last. I had my hair done by Dickey's assistant "TK" and he was incredible! I left feeling like a superstar lol. He was very knowledgeable and told me all the do's and don'ts to maintaining my curly hair. Please save your time and money, and avoid this place by any means. It's not worth the hype. Dickey, the owner, is extremely rude, unprofessional and the most condescending person I've ever met. I never felt so disrespected in my entire life. I left that place crying, confused and mad at myself for not standing up for myself when he was straight up insulting me. I speak French so I do have an accent when I speak English, but I'm 100% bilingual. At some point during my appointment, he insinuated that I couldn't understand English because I was "looking at him with my big eyes" (those are his words). I went there at 9am and left at 12pm --- do the math. During those hours, he proceeded to ignore me more than once, have an unnecessary attitude when all I wanted was a trim and a curly silk press (I have 4c hair). The final result was not great at all and I was literally crying at my chair and felt extremely humiliated after all the emotional rollercoaster he put me through. At the end of all this, his assistant had the audacity to come up to me, with a fake smile, to ask me if she could take a picture of me. Make it make sense. read more

I have 3c hair. Its very very very thick hair and I have a lot of hair. I've been to many so called curly/kinky hair specialists. This place was professional, clean, organized, approachable, educational and most importantly they were real with your expectations. After a terribly disappointing hair cut at Christo Fifth Avenue last month (I paid 145 plus tip, my pockets were empty and my hair was crappy) I was desperate for something good. I went in for consultation the week before my cut. During the consultation Dickey (the owner) suggested I come in with a clear idea of what I wanted. We discussed how short I want to go, my hair care routine, and the type of shape I'd like, etc. So I did as Dickey told me AND DID MY HOMEWORK! I came in with some pics and a general idea of what I wanted. Sheri washed my hair and educated me thoroughly on co washing, non sudsy, sulfate free shampoos, how to sleep with it, how to handle it after 3 days, etc. Basically she told me how to care for my natural hair from the most minute details to some cool tricks. I cannot begin to tell you how valuable this is for women who are just starting their natural hair journey or who are about 3 seconds away from slathering the creamy crack on their scalp. They EDUCATE YOU and save you from some rather unfortunate relapses into relaxing (not that I have a problem with relaxed hair, I just dig the curls more). It wasn't dogmatic or overly paternalistic. We just talked about hair products, methods and tricks. That alone was worth it trip and money spent here. Monique cut my hair. I brought in a picture and she made suggestions. We talked about length, how short, how much it will shrink and what it will grow into. This woman was real with me. How many times did you go into a so called curly place they just sold you some dream of what you can get? How many times did you hear that if you use this or use that your hair will be that perfect set of curls? What went down: First they wash it, then blow dry straight, then gentle passing of flat iron then cut then back to rinsing under water then curly styling then under dryer and finally slight touch up and fluffing with blow dryer. The ONLY con is that they really really push the products. But no worries with some politeness they got off my back. I will say that I wish I had a little extra money to buy the curly whip cause its awesome and smells like Fruit Loops! Totally price was about 88 for cut and curly styling. Doing this literally 20 minutes after my "free consultation" while it's fresh. My visit was a waste of my time. I was very detailed in my email on what I wanted and how my hair is currently. Why did I waste 30 minutes of my lunch break to go to this salon? Walking in was promising. It didn't look too busy. The receptionists were friendly and they gave me information about the salon and their services on a flyer. The salon looks clean, neat and the staff look semi-happy. Here is my complaints. What was the point of stating my service request on your website when the stylist couldn't or doesn't feel confident in doing the service I wanted. Couldn't that be told to me via email? As soon as I told her the service she shook her hair and proceed to tell me all the ASSUMPTIONS that would cause my hair break. Assumption 1. It will break because it requires heavy maintenance. You will have to wet your hair often. (Her words). I co wash or water rinse my hair daily. Why not ask me my current routine instead of thinking a person of color doesn't wash their hair everyday. Assumption 2. You wouldn't be able to blow dry your hair. Why not wear clip ins? Again asking info about your client before speaking would of been helpful. I hardly ever blow dry and I don't believe in fake hair. Why am I coming to you for a weave job isn't this supposed to be a NATURAL salon? Assumption 3. The color will change your curl type. TRUE/Maybe. How about ask if I colored my hair before or if I even want my curl type to change. There is more but I'll keep this short. When I look around and most of you clients are black, most of the staff are black, why do they have this ill-informed and not really friendly women working there? I expected to be treated like Taren Guy youtube video where the owner asked his client so many questions. HE really made the visit a TEACHING moment but that was probably just for show. She needs to learn to choose her word carefully when dealing with clients of a different race than her own. Keep the assumptions of black hair care out the door. I wish I could give a better review. The salon is really pretty and clean. They stylists and receptionists are all extremely nice and helpful. My issue is with Dickey the owner. I originally came in for a texturizer. I have been natural for three years and got kind of tired of fighting my frizz, shrinkage and wanted hair that wasn't so tight and coily. I arrived on time for my consultation, however I had to wait about 45 minutes before he even came over to me because he was busy talking to other clients. Two that came in after me. When he gave me my consultation he was very rushed with me. Basically he told me he wouldn't go forward with doing anything to my hair until he saw it curly ( I came in with it half straightened), which was understandable. So he suggested i book a curly lesson($80!!!!) so i can learn how to wear my curly hair. I came in the next day for the curly lesson. I assumed it would be taught by him because he was the one who was going to give me the texturizer. However one of the other stylists gave it to me which was fine because she was extremely nice. After it was done my hair looked exactly the same as when I tried wash and go or shingling at home. Which i don't like. I didn't learn anything that I didn't already know, which waas awful because I spent $80 bucks for that lesson. The worst part of the experience was Dickey's attitude. I found him to be very condescending and a terrible listener. I kept trying to explain to him that I cant wet my hair everyday because I dont have time to dry it and I cant air dry because I get awful shrinkage that I HATE. He told me then maybe I should straighten m hair because I am not committed to being natural!!! I found that really insulting for him to say I am not committed. I have been natural for three years!!!! I just want a looser texture because I am tired of the hair battle. No matter what I said he kept cutting me off, smirking at me, and kept repeating "you have to WET IT EVERYDAY." Great I got it! Any other advice, because that doesn't work for my lifestyle!!!!! I made two other appointments at Dickey's because I really wanted a cut and texturizer but I couldn't bring myself to spend that kind of money in a place that makes me feel bad about myself when I leave. When I called to the salon to mention my experience the receptionists said I wasn't the first person to complain about Dickey's agressive attitude. It really is a shame because I still have no texturizer. No regular natural hairstylists. I went to hair rules for the big chop. The owner of the Salon actually did my cut. MR DICKEY (I was a little star struck) LOL .. But I must say he did an amazing job. My hair is cut perfectly and I am also using his products which are wonderful. My cousin met me at the salon and he even sat down with her and talk about her hair and how it could be better. He does not push his products, he really does not have to the end results speak for it self. My hair is shiny, health, and is not greasy .. (i hate greasy hair). Actually Mr Dickey greets everyone who come into the salon and spent some time with each customer. I went on a thursday, but I wonder if he can do this on a friday or sat. But anyway I was spoiled. The only thing I think that might be a problem with some people is the cost. I spend 485.00 ...(yes honey) I purchase products for me and my cousin, I got a hair cut and style, by the owner which if you went to Oscar Blandi, or Frederic Fekkai.... 485 buck would not even get you a look at his chair. But my next visit will be much cheaper .... 180 or 150. So I give it a thumbs up ..... I have been going to Hair Rules for about 8 years now. I am a black woman who has very fine hair (although a lot of it) that is thinning pretty impressively on top. Dickey has cut my hair all of this time, from SUPER SHORT to longer. You cannot get better hair cuts in New York City if you are a black woman with natural hair. You cannot get better hair cuts in New York City if you are a black woman with thinning hair. You cannot get better hair cuts in New York City if you want to have options. You cannot get better hair cuts in New York City. Period. Every penny is worth it. Do not be followed by curl/natural hair competitors. If you are a black woman who wants to rock natural hair styles with very thick or thin hair, lots or little, this is the place for you. I have never been the type to do my own hair. I mostly wear weaves and transitioned with a weave, but in the 2.5 year since my last relaxer, I had never been to a natural hair salon. A friend frequents Hair Rules and had great things to say about it, so I decided to give it a try. So far, I've been to Hair Rules three times -- for a curly style/lesson, blow dry style and cut, and also a twist out. Two of those appointments were with Dickey and the twistout with Monqiue. Overall, I've had a very positive experience with Hair Rules. Everyone is very professional and accomodating, and I didn't feel as if I was getting the hard sell with regard to their products -- it was more so, generally what to avoid with certain types of products and use this type instead, for example [insert Hair Rules product]. I've generally been able to get in and out of my appointments within a reasonable amount of time. There's no excessive waiting around. They truly respect your time and can hustle to get you out of there if the styling is taking on the longer side. My hair is also a fan of Hair Rules. Their wash-n-go or curly style is much better than what I can personally accomplish on my own (but again, I'm pretty new to this). The cut that Dickey gave me was really good for maintaining my length, but also getting rid of the dead ends I had due to heat damage from blending with my extensions. The twist out.... sigh. They blow dry and flatiron your hair in conjunction with the twist out -- I was actually trying to avoid putting heat on my hair, but I was also curious about what an elongated twistout would look like. Nah. Simply not compatible with my hair type. It lasted under a day and by the second day, I just looked wild. That being said, Monique is sweet, very professional and she did a superb job on my hair -- I walked out looking great. The prices... The curly style is not that bad at $86 (but lasted a good 4 days). The twist out was a bit steeper at $100 (lasted a day and a half). The blow-dry and cut... sigh $260. I typically pay that for a full weave, but I was pretty happy with it. Also, keep in mind that gratuity is not included in these prices. Overall, I highly recommend Hair Rules. read more
