It's definitely been a many number of years since we've been back, mostly because we live in South Evanston. Anyway, for our 12th anniversary, the hubby and I made reservations for dinner. We did take note that the place was pretty full given a Friday evening, so I would recommend reservations. We also noted that we were probably the youngest people there easily by a decade and we're in our mid-30s. Service was decent - attentive, but they did forget my tea and had to be reminded. We got the mussels to start where the broth was delicious but the mussels themselves were a bit gritty/sandy. The short ribs special was delicious and their steak and frites is definitely a house favorite. The entrees were the saving grace of the meal and elevated them up to 4 stars. The meat was cooked just perfect with that simple but delicious salt/pepper seasoning that brings out the flavor of good meat. Overall, a good experience. read more

I had to go outside of YELP to narrow down the dinner choice for a special outing after a Northwestern home game. There are lots of nice dinner places in Evanston, I decided to narrow it down by location (walking distance from the Northwestern Campus) and service. YELPers report lots of nice dinner places with good service, but not specifically about my pet peeve, I do not approve of the new hidden upcharges on ice or no-ice for before dinner drinks. I additionally don't like to have my intelligence insulted by having some young waiter or bartender explain to me what they think "neat" or "on-the-rocks" means - when restaurants or bars switch to the hidden up-charges they often coach their staffs to "explain" (talk down to) customers that "neat means more" or "on-the-rocks means like a double" or some other diabolical rationalization. I probably could deal with the up-charges if I didn't get the added insult of the idiotic rationalization (just say that management decided to add up-charges for whiskey or martinis), but I would prefer that they just raise their drink prices across the board openly and honestly. So, I called the restaurants (with a telephone, I felt so old-fashioned, just like my idea of neat or straight-up) and found that this was the only restaurant to not have gone to the new hidden up-charges. Great, made the reservations and spread the word. It's a quaint and cozy little pseudo-French bistro very close to the stadium, run by an Eastern European family (couldn't nail down the accent), and I think we were the only ones in there who weren't regulars (usually a good sign). In spite of the small size, we didn't feel cramped or claustrophobic, and it wasn't too loud either. Service was friendly, sincere, and competent, I do like the family team approach. The venison and short ribs were excellent, the steak-frites were only okay (the beef a little tough and not quite the highest quality), the prices reasonable for the atmosphere and quality of food. There's a steep $20 corkage fee, but they are very up front about it, my Chief of Staff had some specific ideas about the wine so we paid it (and again), but their actual wine list is quite satisfactory with reasonable pricing (compared to other restaurants) so I actually wouldn't recommend the BYOW approach. Oh, and the reason they don't have hidden up-charges for neat or on the rocks? They don't serve whiskey or cognac. read more

This is a charming little place with amazing food. The bread comes with an excellent pate. But don't get too filled up on bread, because everything else is so good. Entree portions are a good size - not too much, although, I have never made it to dessert! My favorite is the bouillabaisse, which is basically an aromatic seafood stew with fennel and tomatoes. Another favorite thing is that they do a palette cleanser of pinot noir sorbet, which I wish they sold in pints that I could just take home with me... Note that parking is a little tricky here - street parking only. There is a parking lot, but it's a couple blocks west of the place and is often full. This was our first time at Jilly's and we felt excited about how cute it seemed. But that's where the happiness ended. Fake flowers and cheesy bottles of wine all over the cafe gave it a chintzy fake French touch. The beet salad was OK but greasy. The bouillabaisse was filled with rubbery, overcooked, tasteless mussels and shrimp, and chunks of brick-like flavorless salmon. The bread was covered in some creamy, messy sauce. The shrimp in the seafood linguine was similarly tasteless, but sort of covered up by the cream sauce. Even the French bread was cold -- come on you can't even heat that up?!?! They wanted to charge $35 for these entrees. Insulting! So disappointing. We lost our appetites. At least we got a refund. DO NOT GO!! read more

A friend and I went there for dinner last night prior to attending a concert at St. Luke's in Evanston. Loved it. Very nice ambience. Ali was our server and did a good job. The food was delicious. My friend had the Chicken Paillard and I had the trout. I also had a French 75 cocktail which was fantastic and my friend had the French Martini which she loved. If you want an adult experience - no people glued to their cellphones and taking photos of their food- just enjoying the in-person company, I highly recommend Jilly's. I believe they are probably suffering the same fate as most businesses these days in terms of staffing, but we had a great experience. read more

I purchased a dinner for two groupon for this place and dined here last week with my bf. Took advice from other yelp reviews and was able to park at the deluxe auto service place right next door. We ordered a couple glasses of pinot grigio and mussels for starter, which was really good! The mussels themselves were pretty small in size, but the broth was really yummy that me and my bf kept soaking our bread in the broth instead of spreading the butter/chicken liver paste which were also very tasty. Also the famous pinot noir sorbet was very refreshing. Just the right amount and just the right taste. For entrees I ordered a bouillabaisse and my bf ordered the rack of lamb. Both were yummy, although his lamb was more like medium than medium rare. The portion for lamb was also smaller than what I had expected from looking over the yelp pictures... Apparently the rack of lamb picture in yelp is outdated or something? It was totally different from what we had ordered. My bouillabaisse was good, except because we had already had mussels for appetizer, I felt like the two dishes were a little overlapping in taste. For dessert we had the key lime pie. Yum! One interesting thing was that the server brings out the whole collection of desserts to your table for you to choose from. I have driven by this Cafe many times and finally decided to try the place. We had to walk three blocks as there is no parking. The place could use some updating. I have been to many French restaurants, but this place needs a facial. A good cleaning and some additional light would help. The staff was friendly and service was good. The food portions were reasonable, and my wife enjoyed the coffee. The patronage was light, and of an older age. It did not seem to be a vibrant and alive restaurant. What a lovely little gem! We'd driven past Jilly's many times and recently gave it a try. The food was really impressive. I had the fish special, branzino that night, and it was cooked perfectly, tender and flaky but with a delicate golden sear. It was sooo much better than the branzino I recently had at a restaurant in River north. My dining companions were all very pleased with their meals as well, including the beet salad, rack of lamb and steak frites. My only disappointment was the French onion soup--it wasn't presented with the immense care of the other dishes and seemed like an afterthought. Nevertheless we will definitely be back! Last week four of us had lunch at Jilly's- a touch of France in the northern suburbs! I had not dined there in many years but was so glad to come back as we all had delightful meals - four different salads- all excellent. I had the traditional Salade Nicoise which was delicious - tuna was nicely rare. Another had the steak salad - the steak was cooked to order just right. We went here for my birthday dinner (and no I am not revealing how many years it's been) - but we thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The service was a bit off (lack of staffing) but our waiter was cheerful inspite of his overload and the food was mostly excellent. My Seafood Linguine in Tarragon Sauce appetizer was exquisite and reasonably priced at $8.50 (lots of fresh shrimp and scallops.) And the Rack of Lamb with Wild Mushrooms and Haricot Verts was SOOO good and also a bargain compared to other similar restaurants. We've never tried the brunch - but now that my appetite is back - I certainly look forward to doing so! read more

My husband and I had a great evening here yesterday. This cafe is the perfect venue for dates. They have a very cozy design and my favorite combination of "white tablecloth on a background of burgundy and dark wood". The cafe is very tiny. We came without reservations, and found the table. but probably in popular days such as Friday or Saturday reservation required. I was pleased with my meal and the size of dish. It was not huge like in American restaurant , but was not tiny like in many French restaurants when you need to have 3 - 6 plates to not be hungry. Price for dinner for 2 persons is 60 - $ 70 with wine and dessert. But you can only have a couple of appetizers for 9 - $ 12 and coffee for price like $ 30 dollars if you do not plan a big dinner. Wife and I happened to be in Evanston on Valentine's Day for an art opening, so I looked at our WBEZ member guide for restaurants in the vicinity. We wanted French, and only Jilly's had the discount. I called and got the last table of the night (at 5!) and they said they would honor the card, so we were in. Friends in the meantime said the food is good, but warned us that we'd likely be the youngest people in there by a decade or five, and they weren't far wrong. The food was all fine - I had venison in Door county cherry sauce, wife had steak frittes (which is what we went for as she had a hankering.) Sauce was a little bland, but tasty enough. Steak was likewise without complaint. We also had escargot, stuffed artichoke, house salad, etc. Our older Russian waiter was definetely rushing us, pushy "Order now please. Busy!" He was anticipating the rush later - its a busy night, we got it, ordered as fast as we could to just help him out, and had a nice time. Still, it wasn't ideal. The food was all standard, sort of dated 1950's Julia Child style. It was comforting in a way, but I'd not rush to return for the food. Much less the service or decor. Wife sat in the booth against the wall, and enjoyed looking out at the cute restaurant, very authentic bistro style. I on the other hand had to stare at a long wall of "art" if you can call it that: production-line Kincaide-esque landscapes and portraits of clowns, that kind of thing. Depressing. I'd give this place somewhere in between a 3 and a 3.5. I came here a few days ago with my boyfriend to use my Groupon. Jilly's is small and tucked away - we almost missed it a couple of times. One thing that was really irritating was the parking; we had to circle around the area several times, and after we got into the restaurant, we overheard someone else asking if they could park in the lot right next door, to which they responded yes! A sign or something outside the restaurant would have saved us so much time. The decor of this place is cozy and rustic, down to the plates, the paper doilies, and the utensils! Jilly's had more of a bistro feel rather than a cafe, especially because at the end of the meal the waitress told us that their espresso machine has been broken for a whole year. Speaking of which, the service, while not outright bad, was more just... depressing. Everyone working here had this sort of sad, burnt out demeanor, which certainly did not make me feel excited about their food or anything else. Anyway, onto the food -- I ordered a beet salad for my starter and it was surprisingly a lot larger and a lot better than I had anticipated. The salad included some shaved fennel, feta cheese, red onions, and arugula. The vinaigrette was absolutely amazing and the salad was a good balance between soft and crunchy, although I think I would have preferred some iceberg lettuce or some kind of leafy green that wasn't as soft as the arugula. My boyfriend ordered the escargot, which was pretty good as well. For our entrees, I ordered the chicken breast with rotini. The dish was a hearty size and it tasted decent, but the sauce was really thick, heavy, and gooey. I could barely finish even five bites. My boyfriend ordered the lamb rack special. While the lamb was cooked to a perfect tenderness, the sauce was very watery and thin, which detracted from the whole dish. Four of us came here tonight to celebrate one of our birthdays. The food was VERY fair, it was incredibly noisey and the service was dreadful!!!! We would have appreciated having our waters refilled (even once), our ice tea refilled without asking and reaching across the table, in front of our faces to clear every dish (instead of to our side). We waited at least 15 minutes for our credit cards to be processed when tables around us were being tended to in a much more timely manner. Sunday brunch here was wonderful. We felt like philistines because we were clearly the youngest people there, and fiddling with our salad forks. Still, the waitress/hostess was polite and reasonably attentive. I wonder why they didn't have separate people taking orders and serving, because she was working ALL the tables (and hostessing), and seemed a little swamped. The dining room is cozy and old-fashioned, and seats only 45 people (I counted!). The boyfriend and I hadn't made reservations, but we were seated right when we arrived (a bit after 1pm). I'd still recommend calling ahead though, because the other two empty tables already had cards on them. Of course, we did the $24 prix-fixe champagne brunch: your choice of appetizer and entree from their normal brunch menu, then a dessert menu, with unlimited champagne/mimosas/coffee/tea/fresh OJ. Dang! This is why I LOVE brunch-- the table is just so cluttered with random plates and cups and silverware and food! :) The basket of breads came even before the menus-- 2 each of lemon poppy seed loaf, strawberry muffin, and raisin scones. That strawberry muffin was seriously one of the best muffins I've ever had. As for the actual food, I can't say I loved my shrimp frittata, even though there was a massive amount of shrimp in it and they were fresh. The flavors were just kind of boring. My appetizer was amazing though-- grilled portobello mushroom with melted brie. It doesn't necessarily sound brilliant, but ah, those tastes, those textures...! Nothing was overwhelming. It was served over greens in a perfect vinaigrette and two endive leaves, which provided a welcome crunch. I would've taken that as an entree. I think for dessert, I went with the sorbet, for palate-cleansing purposes..? Who knows? All I remember is that app... The entire meal was supplemented by refills on mimosas (me) and champagne (boyfriend). Delicious... and I was a little woozy by the end, heh heh. We braved biking along treacherous Green Bay Road for this brunch, and it was worth it. The total bill came out to something like $70 for two people-- I don't care what world you live in, that is STEEP for one meal. Hadn't been to Jilly's in many years, but, meaning to go back, I was thrilled to see a Groupon available. So we went for Sunday brunch and were sorry to see how far it has slipped. The first impression is that Jilly's interior hasn't been updated in many years. What was once cozy French provincial is now rather tired, with bad art and cracked/peeling paint on the walls. But no big deal. The table with white linen and white paper looked lovely, and we were quickly given a very nice complimentary basket of bakery items - zucchini bread, scones, mini-muffins, with some butter and jelly (not really jam, but jelly). OK, a good start. However, the food served turned out to be hit and miss: The portobello mushroom and brie salad was nice; the beet salad was well-liked, as was the pasta with chicken and tomato sauce. However, the salmon, cream cheese and baguette came with one slice of toasted bread - OK, but not baguette. The salmon, orzo and citrus buerre blanc came with a bland cream sauce (heavy, not at all buerre blanc) and the orzo was clearly made the day(s) before. The bathroom is in terrible shape. A good cleaning and $500 in repairs is desperately needed. So why only 2 stars? Well, first of all, our expectations were high: The claim is "Authentic French with an American Twist", but there was very little that was French. Second, the quality was really slipping. "meh, I've experienced better" (2 stars) is a better fit than "A-OK" (3 stars). So, here's a wake-up call to chef Brian Newkirk: Time to come by the restaurant more often and get the quality back in line. read more

The food really is fantastic but I have a hard time saying anything else positive about this restaurant. Not sure I understand all the fuss and distinction that's clearly laid on this establishment. The service was mediocre at best and plain indifferent. The decor needs either a serious cash infusion or demolition. Stained ceilings, filthy bathrooms and heavily worn carpets do little to offset the price paid for a credible French bistro. Massive shame. Disappointed with this visit to the restaurant. Upon arrival, we were seated and then waited 10 minutes before anyone brought water and asked about drinks. Mind you, there was one other party in the restaurant, a party of 3 so why the delay, who knows. Ordered Salmon and the Escargot. I expected the potato pancake to be hot and it was lukewarm at best. The Escargot were tough and not a hint of the garlicy butter you come to expect with Escargot. I had the Bouillabaisse and my wife had the Lobster Risotto. Any shellfish in either dish was rubber, over cooked. Salads and desserts were acceptable. What really took the cake was the 4% that they added to the bill as a surcharge. Nowhere on the menu did it note that such was to be added, and I only caught this because the original amount changed with the final bill. Extremely disappointed. We won't be back and will look for another french restaurant to visit for special occasions (it was my wife's birthday). read more

I went here with greater expectations. While the food and service was very good, the ambience was underwhelming. The restaurant is located on Greenbay Road in a storefront. Parking is very confusing. We had to circle a couple of times just to find out that they don't have their own parking lot. Forget about street parking because you need a residential permit. UGH. We finally parked at Duxler Complete Auto Care, which is located almost next door to Jilly's. We weren't sure if we could park there, but upon arriving at Jilly's they confirmed our assumptions. Whatever...just hoping to find my car is still there and not towed away. The restaurant itself is very unusual. As soon as you walk in, there is a unisex bathroom straight ahead located next to tables. Kind of unappealing and unappetizing if you ask me. There was not a hostess present which made it a little awkward as far as letting someone know about our reservations. The tables were cramped together and the overall atmosphere was not impressive. I was expecting much more since they call themselves a French Bistro. The crowd was much older and the dining fare was very casual. As far as the food goes, I ordered the rotini with chicken breast. It was a pasta dish with chicken, spinach, goat cheese and roasted garlic cream sauce. I usually don't order dishes with cream sauces, as I find they are much too heavy and greasy, but this one was very light and quite good. I recommend it. The roasted pork tenderloin was just okay. The pork didn't have much flavor, but the accompanying broccoli and mashed sweet potatoes were very good. I don't think I will be returning to this restaurant. Although my dish was very good, the prices are a tad high for what you get, and as mentioned before, the atmosphere is objectionable. read more

This was my first time for Sunday brunch. We hv been many times for dinner and hv NEVER been disappointed. We went at 10:30. The menu is very good. Lots of things to choose from. I had outstanding pancakes. They are not yr ordinary pan- cakes. They are extraordinary since they hv a little crunch to them. The bacon was something to write home about. Other people had the frittata, and my partner had the French toast, scrambled eggs and bacon. For dessert we shared an incredible brownie that was luscious and raspberry sorbet. Dropped in for lunch while car was getting the oil changed. Looked cozy from the street. Small place, it is cozy. Train is right across the street. I concur with another review that the white linen table setting definitely raises the bar for lunch in a good way. I would also concur with another review about the distraught response over dessert, although I got the impression of surprise, not so much disgust. I typically do not do dessert at lunch. It's a good call if you need a step up place for lunch but not over the top, and also conducive to good discussion. Perfect for the busy parents needing some catch up time. Lunch on a Wednesday, it was only us and one other couple. I hope they get busier than that for their sake. wife got hot ham and cheese with Fire Roasted Tomato and Fennel soup With Garlic Croutons which she enjoyed. I got the North Shore Roll-Up 9 Tomato Tortilla Shell Filled with Chilled Vegetables, Goat Cheese, Pesto, Served with Sweet Potato Fries - which I also enjoyed. Tip, the North shore roll-up is Big and could technically be split between two. I took half home for dinner. Service was good and personable, there was nobody else to compete with us ;-) I kind of had to schooch them along for the check at the end, but that was probably me in a hurry. Prices were doable. Came into Jillis on a Wednesday because I aways see the place from the Metra on my way into the city each morning, it's really quaint and inviting. It was a slow night but they really delivered. The onion soup was perfect.. Certainly made to order. The crispy goat cheese app was fresh and delicious. They served a pinot noir sorbet before the entrees, nice touch. Entrees were perfectly cooked and the portions were generous. Seasoned well, but not too salty or rich. Will come again anytime I cruise through Evanston. Nice job. read more

I always choose Jilly's for special occasions. The food is outstanding, and the staff are very friendly. I love the sorbet between courses. The pate is quite tasty, and the desserts are out of control good. Plus they bring them by on a tray so you can see them before you pick. If you're already planning on dessert, it makes it easier to choose. If you're not planning on dessert, it makes it too hard to say no. But you won't regret going here. It has a nice romantic feel if you're going on a date - and always lots of old people. :) read more

We went to Jillys the other night using our Groupon. Being Evanston residents we'd give it a try. First, this is a small place, so be prepared to be cozy with your neighboring table. When we walked in we the only people under 55. The decor is stale, old, and dusty. Reminded me of a crazy grandmas basement, with odd clown pictures on the wall. The place was freezing! They table of old lady's next to us kept complaining for them to turn up the temp. I thought I was going o fall through the floorboards as every time someone walked by my chair would dip. Service was less than mediocre. We had to ask for bread, and we could of swore they forgot about us for the first 20 min after sitting down. Food was... Eh. I had the pear chicken, my partner had the lamb. My chicken was just a bunch of hacked chicken meat wrapped in skin sitting on a bed of watery sweet potatoes and wilted greens. It left much to be desired. The lamb was reported to be very good. That is the only reason I gave 2 stars instead of 1. I would not go here again. Last night my husband and I decided to try the take out at Jilly's. I thought ok it's going to be take out. I didn't have high expectations. OMG, the dinners were FABULOUS!!! We ordered the escargot and the seafood risotto. The escargot was perfectly cooked, tucked in a delicate brioche bun and the sauce was amazing. The seafood risotto had generous amounts of shrimp and scallops and they too were perfect and to boot, they included extra sauce on the side. What could top this off? They paired it with a bottle of wine and for dessert a creme brulee. Thank you Jilly's. You gave us a wonderful Saturday night and reminded us that good food is good for the soul!
