Since my last review, I've brought several people over that have bought their bows there. All walked out with a top-tier experience (and bow). A few notes after reading the reviews. 1) Jim is really the peak of bowmen....an archer's archer. I've gone hunting with others that have previously hunted with Jim. They told me that Jim took an Alaskan bear at 105 yards with a single arrow. When I confronted him with this, he said, "naw, it was only 100 yards"...... 2) He's been the paid factory rep - the face of the factory - for at least one bow manufacturer. Not an honor lightly achieved. 3) His whole family shoots at the expert level. Some will be there for training events. 4) Jim as a million stories and will give selflessly in showing you, your friends, your class, your league how to shoot. However, he does not suffer fools lightly and if you come in with the "customer's always right" or some other attitude, he will feel no need to help you any longer. Conversely, he is great with kids and clumsies. If you've ever noodled the idea of trying out a bow (I hate using long bows, but compound bows are great fun without pulling yourself apart), I highly recommend that you go visit and ask to try out a rental bow for an hour. Very inexpensive. If you don't get hooked, there's always chess or scrap-booking...... Jim - it was a privilege to shoot my first real bow there. My daughter is your biggest fan. I rarely leave reviews, but I had to make an exception after the experience Jim gave us at the shop. I walked in with very little knowledge and walked out not only with everything I needed to get started with a longbow, but also with a wealth of insight and guidance. Jim took an incredibly generous amount of his time to make sure both my partner and I were set up for success, answering every question and making the whole process feel approachable and exciting. He didn't try to oversell anything at all one of the most up front and honest blokes I've come across. It's honestly the first time I've been to a shop that shows this level of care and attention to newcomers, it was an absolutely brilliant experience. Because of Jim, his mate Travis, and everyone else we met there, this is quickly becoming a serious hobby for us. If you've even thought about trying archery, do yourself a favor and stop by, Jim will have you feeling confident and eager to start shooting in no time. No amount of online bow shopping or research will compare to chatting to Jim about what you need! Huge thanks to everyone at the shop, you're all fantastic. Jim's an old school no nonsense kind of guy. He takes his time while listening to your wants and needs, and then will give you an upright and honest professional opinion on the best way to get you there or maybe even give you some other options you might not have thought about. The first time I went in, he took a good deal of time to assist me with tuning and sighting in my bow. At no time did I feel rushed or pressured to hurry or to make any sort of purchase. As a result I went ahead and had him make me 435 grain arrows that hit the bullseye from 20 to 80 yards. Jim set me up with a bow and arrows, helped determine what the right draw would be. He set me with my starting draw and helped with some pointers on shooting. Then brought me stronger bows, until we dialed it the right one. He set me up with a full kit and said he would like to see me regularly to tune up my shooting. Wasn't sure what to expect walking into an archery shop in Salinas.... I must say prepare to be impressed! Jim is EXTREMELY knowledgeable about all things in archery! He's generous with his knowledge and time. Took my husband into the back range and had us shoot for a couple hours for nothing! Great experience!!! I used to shoot compound bows 15 years ago and now getting back into it. Did some research and was interested in a Bowtech bow. Jim was VERY helpful, adjusting various bows for me to try and after shooting arrow after arrow, I chose my bow and arrows and am very happy with my purchase. I got a Bowtech Carbon Overdrive which has turned out to be a perfect purchase!!! This shop is an informal, friendly and relaxing shop. I even got some free pointers from an instructor there that was very helpful. The only minus and I'm not even taking off points from it are that the bow was not well tuned. I.e. the cam timing was off and when I asked Jim about it, the attitude was that it was good enough. I can see his point as I was shooting pretty well with it. But still, I'm a bit of a technical perfectionist and will be purchasing the necessary equipment to tune my own bow. That would include adjusting the cam timing, tiller adjustment and new nock level that would be correct for the bow. read more

By far the best place in the state for beginners. The lifetime of archery knowledge the owner has is incredible. Great place to take your kids your wife the whole family. The lesson are very cheap compared to the kind of instructors your getting. Also you do not need to own your own bow they have rentals or loaners. The owner likes you to try out different boats to see what you're comfortable with before buying your own. Or to see if he even like it and want to pursue. That kind of service is a thing of the past nowadays. If you're looking to get into archery I highly recommend this shop. read more

My whole family went for an experience after Thanksgiving. This is great fun for an event. He brought out balloons and a T-Rex for us to aim at. We had a blast competing with one another. Some of us had never shot an arrow before. Jim is patient and very knowledgeable. We will go back when we all get together. This would be a great birthday party! read more

My family and I have visited here twice. The first was a terrific experience, the last not so much. We went in December shortly after Christmas and had a lesson from the owner's daughter. She was knowledgeable and patient. The owner would chime in with tips and advice and was very friendly. My son and I returned recently to use the range. The owner was the only person there. He was polite and helpful, but nowhere near how he was on our last visit. In fact it seemed quite clear that he couldn't wait for us to leave (it was the middle of the day, not closing time). It's unfortunate, as the closest competitor seems to be in Santa Cruz. Perhaps the owner was having an off day. But based on our last visit, I doubt we'll be returning. read more

Just went the other day to check out the shop...it's small but full of awesome archery items. Jim showed my wife and myself the range, gave us information, and took the time to answer our questions. We'll be going back again this weekend for the classes they have...$10 an hour! That's a super deal...especially considering they furnish all the equipment for you! What a great experience!! I went into JCA looking to purchase a recurve bow on a limited budget and Jim helped me put together a set up that I was more than thrilled with. With 4 free hours in the range to accompany my purchase, I am anxiously looking forward to going back to shoot some arrows. I went in while traveling back home to San Diego from Crescent City on a tip from a friend had a great time. I tried to buy a few small items from Jim to say thanks for the hospitality but he gave me everything i tried to buy!! That won't happen in the big stores. I've been taking my 10 year old daughter here for a few weeks for the group lessons, and we absolutely love it! The family that runs the store and lessons is so helpful and patient, and the lessons are very reasonably priced. Even if there is a large group that day for lessons, they make sure everyone gets plenty of chances at the range. I've been recommending this experience to all our friends! read more

This place is awesome. They really take the time to get you situated with your bow. My kids go to the class on Saturdays and they love it.

Very unprofessional. I found this to be a bad experience. The owner seemed unwilling to help with any questions we had because we werent professional archers. Seems to defeat the purpose of operating a range. He was also harsh with my daughter who is only 12 yrs old. I never spend money when im treated badly! Ill never go here again.
