They are so disorganized and can never seem to keep to their posted hours (outside of posted closures for track events). They're only open four days a week and some how can't even handle maintaining those hours. Called this morning to confirm they're open and show up to a locked gate and you're greeted by a voicemail so scratchy you can't even hear what it says. It's so sad this is the only rifle range within an hour drive of Monterey county and it's operated so poorly. read more

Went to range first time last weekend and was impressed with facilities and range safety personnel. Range safety officer gave me quick safety brief (BLUF: take all commands from tower) and oriented me to firing line and procedures. I thought cost was fair; sighted rifles for ~ 2 hours for ~ $20. Not sure why there is no information on this range online and why it has some bad reviews. The range has pistol and long range shooting. 50-100 yards and a few 200 yards. They also have an area that uses steel targets for pistols. It's 15 bucks for the first hour. You shoot for 15 minutes and you can go out to your targets out in the field and then resume whenever everyone is back. It's really organized and straight forward. A range master gives all the new people the run down of the rules so don't be discouraged if you're not sure what's going on. Tip: Bring ear muffles and not ear plugs because it becomes annoying taking them in and out every 15 minutes. First time at this outdoor shooting range. Very well run shooting pad with safety emphasized throughout the time we were there. Every other stall was closed due to Covid. The staff was very clear when to cease fire, unload and make each firearm safe. The overall pad was sectioned off to short range metal targets 15-25yds & paper target stands out to 15-20+yds. Rifle pad was a lot longer (we didn't use). We brought our teenage daughter to practice live fire shooting for her first time. In all, would highly recommend this place to friends/ family. Be prepared. Bring ur range safety gear, ammo & water. Don't forget Covid supplies (must have a mask). Lastly, this range is open Friday-Mon 9am-3:30pm. I first came here last year, and it was great to have an outdoor range where I could fire my shotguns or rifles. Ever since that first trip, Laguna Seca has been a complete letdown as everything from the signs outside the gate, to their answering machine, and online sources are practically never updated. The only way to know for sure when they're closed is to waste money and fuel driving out there and back after meeting a closed gate. The only other options are BLM land (which are either 4-6 hours away round trip with no restroom facilities onsite and often shutdown due to fire warnings that last several months) or Markley's Indoor range in Watsonville (which doesn't allow rifle or shotgun use). I understand that Laguna Seca's range is subject to the mercy of vehicle-based events, however, that is no excuse for the sloppy (and if I'm being forthright) shit management that can't even be bothered to update their signage, answering machine, or social media. Give it a try, you'll see. There have been times when you'll call their direct number and it'll tell you what days they're open in advance, you'll make plans and invite shooters (new and experienced), only to arrive to an unexplained, closed entrance. Damn you to Hell, you're lucky I can't give you less than a star. If someone reading this wants to try this range they'll find it fun, if it's open at all. This place is a hidden gem. Ive been coming here on and off for years. This 2019-2020 round of staff has been great. Friendly and at the end of the day their goal is to keep everyone safe. The range has a decent steel section for pistols and .22 rifles. This is where I spend most of my time. The sound of hitting steel is very satisfying. This is my initial review of this range as i decided not to forgo my range day during a family vacation. I stopped by to do my initial assessment on future feasibility and range background. Here goes my observations: Pros: -Lanes and areas are extremely clean -A lot of lanes available for rifle, more than Sunnyvale Gun/Rod and about the same as Cordova in Sac -Cease fire/fire intervals announced via PA with 1-min warnings -Each rifle bay was EXTREMELY wide and very roomy, set up for either left or right shooters without switching the table (large enough to accommodate TWO shooters sitting at the same time) -Impact material on bay walls seem to help reduce sound as many CA owners might elect to use muzzle brakes starting 2017 -Stationed RSO near group of shooters -Ample parking; it was Sunday around noon and I had no issues with a minimal crowd on a very nice sunny no-wind day -Rifle rests are provided -Range office very helpful in providing rules and explaining current range conditions -200 yard range is farthest I've seen for a range this nice; located in bays 21, 22, 23 -M855/SS109 steel core rounds verbally confirmed with range office as of 3/12/2017. sparking issue not as big at range, just a no-go on tracer rounds. Rules state no AP/incendiary/tracer rounds; M855/SS109 are none of the three and typical for 62gr. Preparation Suggestions (not Cons IMO for my initial visit): -range is by the hour ($11 for 1st hr, $2.50 afterwards). I normally spend about 2hrs on the rifle range so that's $21; Sunnyvale is $15 all day. In addition to cease fire times and shooting slow on 200 yards, it can get pricey for some people. Load your mags before driving out and have stripper clips and mag loaders OUTSIDE cease fire area so you can continue going during the downtime. -Contrary to what info states, farthest distance is 200 yards as of 3/12/2017 (i've read 300, 500 yard targets previously). -200 yard targets were rendered offline due to recent 2016/2017 winter storms and won't be operational until weather has stabilized (TBD). Forsee getting there early when bays are back open as there are only three (3) bays at this distance -Info on 200 yard targets not available wasn't on their fb page and it would of been a disappointment for those coming to shoot longer distances. Not a big deal for me since I only came to check the place out, but will know to call ahead in the future. Posting updated range conditions and closures would be nice as well. -Bit of a confusing sign prior to stairs stating liability waiver must be signed at range office prior to passing sign, yet range office is past the sign -Rests are basic steel c-channels welded together; if you are worried about any damage to your rifle finish I suggest you bring some thick cloth to put in between your rifle and rest (see photo) I'd highly recommend this range if golfing in Pebble Beach isn't your thing. As of 3/12/2017 it's $11 for an hour and $8/hr afterwards, in increments of 15min times. Anticipate cease fire downtimes into your duration and method you plan on shooting (short distance, long distance, etc). It's out of the way for some people, but if you're in the area to begin with, call ahead to see if the 200yd range is back up sometime around April. read more

I retired as a peace officer and brought a friend to this public range. It's been over 30 years since I shot at this or any public range since I have access to a peace officer range. It hasn't changed much, still the strict one second between shots, a PA calling out a ceasefire, etc. What was new to me was a plastic yellow-colored chamber plug that's required to be inserted after a ceasefire is called. Additionally, a range master is ALWAYS facing and monitoring the shooters on each firing session AND walks and inspects all firing benches to insure every weapon is unloaded, slides and bolts open and locked to the rear, or cylinders open- very safety conscious! Saw some serious shooters sighting their weapons, most had spotting scopes, a few had chronographs. To the left of the range are metal targets for 22LR. I would highly recommend this public range since it's conveniently located right off Hwy 68. Keep this range alive otherwise there won't be a local public range! Finally, be sure to check the Laguna Seca Weathertech Race Track website because any event will shut down the range - be aware and don't waste a drive only to be disappointed to find out it's closed! read more

Laguna Seca is one of our favorite ranges. I like that it is outdoors. They are highly organized and affordable. My husband is a former Marine so he like to do a lot of movement and drills while shooting and they are ok with that (some aren't) with Covid they have every other stall blocked for social distancing. Due to that the wait was longer than usual but always worth a good day on the range. I have always appreciated that you can move your target from 50 to 100 feet. They are very helpful if you have a jam and need a hand also. Bathrooms are currently closed and they have 2 portapotties and a handwashing station. read more

I have been going to the Laguna Seca gun range for the past 8 years. I like the atmosphere and the rangemasters are reasonable people. Range has targets to 200 yards as well as shortrange targets and steel gongs on the opposite side of the rangemaster office. Range used to have stel gongs at 300 and 500 yards but those were removed following some incident with the track and rounds landing on the track several years ago. Great place to go. Weekends the range is closed are posted on the website, just need to look. I bring my family here when they are available and they always have a good time. read more

Good place, nice range, pretty hills. This range goes from 10 yards all the way out to 500. Hell, if you can hit anything out at 500 yards, I have no problem waiting for you during Cease Fire while you and your buddy walk all the way out there and staple up your cute little lamb silhouette. Heck, it's entertaining for me just to see you hit the damn thing. I'm doing my best to get a .45 in the black at 20 yards. You've got the ghost of Allan Quatermain whispering in your ear. There is always an interesting smattering of people here. Some folks with their customized AR-15's and others with the latest Picatinny-rail-equipped high-tech-polymer commando pistols. Folks are always friendly and the line officer is always on task. It's a safe, well run environment. Fun for the whole family! Unfortunately, they won't let me shoot at my old cell phone or that malfunctioning Hewlet Packard Printer. (PC LOAD LETTER... what the heck does that mean???) Oh, due to it's geography and location it can get a bit windy if the conditions are right, but that's one of the risks of an outdoor range. No problem overall. Only go here if you really have to, they used to be better but now have half the range and are 10x more strict feels like you're shooting in a prison yard, took a shot then a deep breath to try and revenged myself and fired again after that breath-I was called out for double tapping because of this. Apparently you need 5 seconds in between shots. I guess that's good for saving ammo but horrible for trying to get any practice or group therapy in. LOVED SHOOTING HERE!!! First time for me and the bf at an outdoor range and we've been back 4 times! They dont have all the fancy targets like zombies and shadows they have a literal target attached to a piece of cardboard. I thought it was so sick to be able to go out into the range after the all clear. You have to put up, take down, re staple your own targets. ORRRR... You can shoot the metal targets. easy gratification for me! They have duck, pig, goat, circle and square shapes. Plus they didnt mind us switching lanes mid session to go from cardboard to metal target. They are super sticklers about safety, but its a good thing when people are going out on the range. I got yelled at over the intercom for putting my empty clip down during the all clear because my hand crossed over the line. And its awesome to watch people with rifles shoot the targets wayyy the F away up on the hill. Also this place isnt filled with gangster looking people or gnarly NRA members. And theyres not a shop area to sell /talk themselves up/make you look dumb. It was mostly older men with rifles and a few mid 20's couples. A good combo I'd say. Best and only place to go shooting in the Monterey Bay. $10 your first hour and $2 every 15 mins after is kind of pricey but you make due since it's the only range in town. Rifle side usually gets packed so call to check before you come here. The range on the rifle side goes from 50, 100, 200 and 300 yard gong. In July they will be putting a 500 yard gong which I'm excited for. The pistol side goes form 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 with some steel targets also. The only down side is the the fact they open Friday-Monday and not all week. Kind of weird but they are open on most holidays that fall on their opening days. The staff is nice and helpful if you need any. Make sure you stay behind the red line when they say so, trust me the range master has no tolerance. Remember to follow all gun safety protocols. The 2nd Amendment is a privilege and please respect that so we don't lose any more gun rights. read more

It's the only shooting range open to the public in the Monterey area. But it's still reasonably priced & well maintained & organized. They sell targets, earplugs, eye protection & ammo (though really, you're better off bringing your own on all of the above). I've never encountered any problems with staff or even other customers. Quite the contrary, everyone always seems to be friendly & helpful. Targets are placeable at marked & measured distances out to 200 yards. The one downside is that they do not permit the use of any target other than standard paper (no using cans, steel targets, boxes, stuffed animals, books, or other "more interesting" targets). read more

Like the outdoor environment better than inside, and this place is better than most I've been from Sacramento, Bay Area and Vegas. Nice lil spot off of Hwy 68, people are cool, employees aren't up on you, clean, organized, and not jenky like some other outdoor ranges. Def be back when I go visit my fam in Salas homes! read more

I work m-f so the hours work fine for me. The location is so close, I'm glad I don't have to drive all the way to San Jose anymore. Range workers are good at their job. One downside is that because the location is where it is, occasionally wildlife down range put us on hold and eat up my shooting time. But I'd rather pay for time I didn't use than someone shwack Bambi. read more

When we booked our campsite at the Laguna Seca campground, we specifically asked about the shooting range. We arrived on 10/3/14 and found out that's it's been closed for some time while they conduct a safety evaluation. This range is not as good as it used to be. I showed up at 11:00 a.m. And was told that they were closing 11:15 - 12:00 for lunch. They open at 9:00 and close at 3:30, four days a week, Friday through Monday. Web site now says closed for lunch 11:30 - 12:00. Staff was wearing body armor, very strange vibe with that. The new steel targets are too small and too far away. There have been random closures and there are scheduled closures when there are events at the race track. Check the web site before going. So I went to this place a day ago and was not impressed. Don't get me wrong, I am all for safety but this place takes the freakin cake. So its 11 buck an hour and 2.50 every 15 minutes after that which is fine if they would actually give you a decent amount of time to shoot. Let me start from the beginning. When I show up the man in the little office asked me if I had been there before and I said no. He says to me "The rules are simple. Do what I say when I say". That was it. Not once did he actually run through the rules with me which are as your would expect for an outside range. When they call a seize fire stand behind the red line. So when I start shooting I get about 7-10 minutes in and they call a seize fire. Then I am standing there for about 10 minutes waiting to shoot again all the while realizing this is charging against the time that I have paid to be there. Then I hopped over to the rifle range. Was having a but of a magazine issue and felt rushed because as I was fixing the problem they called a seize fire and I had to step back behind the red line and wait without having shot anything yet. Plus the men in little office with the loud speaker are watching everyone like a freaking hawk which is fine but the second you make a slight move they don't like, you will hear this over the loudspeaker "NUMBER 26 KEEP YOUR RIFLE ON THE BENCH. DO NOT LIFT IT AGAIN!!!" I mean are you kidding me with this bullshit?? all in all I paid for an hour and got about 20 minutes of shooting. Do I think this place is worth it? Not by a long shot (no pun intended) If I were anyone els I would find another place to give my hard earned money to. read more
