I have been to many cigar stores and cigar lounges in the last 20 years all over the world, so I can speak from a respectable level of authority when I say that Jimenez Tobacco is a fantastic place to visit if you want to smoke a great hand rolled cigar, have a great drink and enjoy great hospitality. Peter and Armando are always there with a smile, they remember your name and immediately make you feel welcome. Their staff is equally friendly and attentive, and on my first day there I was made to feel like a longtime friend. They have inside seating with good music that is never too loud, and an outside grotto to sit in if you prefer. They have a very well stocked bar and a very knowledgeable bartender named Mark who is more than happy to make you his specialty cocktails or to simply pour you a glass of bourbon if you prefer. Mark isn't just a soda jerk who will pour you a rum and coke, he has a solid understanding of the blending of fine alcohols and is clearly a savvy mixologist! The atmosphere of the cigar lounge is fantastic. It reminds you of "the old days" with great chairs and sofas to sit on, lots of space for people to gather and talk, and very classy interior decoration. In some ways it reminds me of walking into a picture of a cigar lounge in the 1940s, but if you added good air scrubbers to keep the billows of smoke down. They do a great job of controlling the smoke, which is also important to me. They do have a couple flatscreen TVs, but they aren't "always on" as I have found in many cigar lounges, so it again promotes conversation with others. They roll their own cigars, and the construction of their product is very good! If you are someone who likes a good solid ash, you won't be disappointed with the Jimenez line! You can tell that they use higher quality leaves, because higher quality leaves produce a much denser ash, which takes longer to fall off. Why is it important? Because ash length changes the flavor of the cigar. Any producer of premium cigars can make an occasional smooth burning, rich tasting product. But, the truly excellent producer will develop a way to do it every time, or almost every time. In three weeks, I have yet to find one that has not burned smoothly and evenly from start to finish. I have been staying at the Courtyard Marriott on Broad Street, and they are a brief 3-5 minute walk from my hotel. I have visited their establishment 3-4 times a week in the past three weeks that I have been on assignment in Newark. I will be in Jersey City for work in mid-June, and I will definitely make the trip back to their store. Actually, going forward, even if I go to Manhattan for work, I will make the trip over to visit their store. They are a short walk from Newark Penn Station, and well worth it! It is about 150 yards from the Prudential Center, so you in a safe part of the city. If you are in Newark and you want a great cigar and a great place to smoke it, this is the place to be, my friends! Great drinks! Great people! Great atmosphere! Jimenez Cigars did a great job at my party. Peter, the owner, is super easy to work with. I wanted a cigar bar and personalized cigar packaging and wrappers and within a couple days Peter had proofs ready. On the night of the party two of his staff came out and did an outstanding job rolling cigars for my guests and assisting with lighting etc. My guests were pretty impressed with both the quality of the cigars and the service. Great place! I was a little apprehensive, having never been in a cigar bar. I walked in the back door and walked down the hall and was cordially greeted by Armando Jimenez, one of the brothers. He asked me what I liked, and after I told him he helped me pick the perfect cigar. There were two other patrons and they both introduced themselves to me, and I did likewise. After cutting and lighting the cigar, Armando introduced me to Mike, the bartender, well, more of an expert mixologist, and asked if I wanted a drink. I left it up to him. Fortunately, Reuben, one of the patrons, suggested an old fashioned. I agreed to the old fashioned and then watched Mike do his magic. You simply don't find many barkeeps nowadays who take as much pride in their craft as Mike. From seasoning the glass with tobacco smoke, to cutting the ice from a block, I was impressed. And I had no regrets going with an old fashioned. Unfortunately I will have to rank every other old fashioned I have based on this one, and I am certain they will all fall short. Hands down best drink I've ever had. Now for the cigar....Easy light, easy drag, even burn, smooth, caramel tones, great drink pairing. What made it better was the company and the conversation. Like a modern day Cheers; "you wanna go where everyone knows your name." And they did...like we had known each other for years. Another brother, Monte, joined us for conversation. Just good guys. Mike then volunteered to make some espresso... Wow. Good stuff! I ended up spending about an hour, or hour and a half there. When I tried to settle up one of the patrons offered to pay my tab, and after much back and forth I relented. Thank you, sir! Pete's mother, Nelda, a master blender and wonderful lady welcomed me and made me a Cuban espresso herself... yea exactly, this family is amazing!!! Needless to say the cigar and coffee were nothing short of perfection. On the way out I picked up a number of cigars for a trip coming up, Pete didn't charge me for the cigar I smoked or the coffee.. unlike other business owners, these guys first priority is to provide their customer an exceptional experience. They take a lot of pride in what they do and they care about their name and their reputation and it certainly shows! The proof is in the pudding, the cigars, cocktails and service are exceptional. My next visit I went with my wife and she had a great time. Even though we went a little late, the food truck had closed but they were very accommodating and made us a really nice Cuban sandwich. The waitress, Paulina was in top of her stuff, she provided us with excellent service and did a great job recommending cigars and drinks. The other young gentleman Paul offered us complementary espressos more than once. When I asked him what cigar he was smoking, he immediately went inside and got me a Churchill Maduro, to date this is the best cigar I have ever smoked. Peter welcomed us and after we told him what we normally smoked he suggested a Maduro wrapper. It was perfect, no bite afterwards. Bring a bottle of whatever your pleasure is.
