We were down in Hburg this past week and visited JM's again. We had a great experience there before several times. Drinks were great, very polite staff at the front. The place is HOPPING on a Friday night. Staff seemed to enjoy working there and have a good team rapport. What I noticed is how many different types of people were enjoying themselves. Middle aged people after work in business attire, young people in casual attire. I think the place is very clever to offer quite exquisite looking Mocktails for the student age population. No reason for anyone to feel left out. Great food and service and a very happy vibe. I wish there were a tad more variety in the menu, but you can't be all things to all people and it is more important to do a select number of items extremely well. My wife and I tried this restaurant today while traveling and it was amazing. The restaurant is very clean and themed well. The service was top notch and prompt. The food was excellent! I had the meatloaf sandwich and my wife had the smoked turkey sandwich. I had macaroni salad and she had the Brussels sprouts . We also had the chopped brisket nachos. A group of 7 of us were trying to find a spot in Harrisonburg to have lunch and we stumbled upon this restaurant. They were able to seat us right away, on a Saturday at about 2. I got a brunch mangonada, and it was tasty and well priced. I had the steakhouse burger which was cooked well. Our service was great, the waitress helping us was on top of helping our table. Delicious food. My boyfriend and I went for lunch here and we couldn't recommend it more. I had pulled pork and he had the turkey melt, both of which were fantastic. We actually bought one of the BBQ sauces to take with us (Smokin Sweet is the best one!). Our server, I believe his name was Tom, was super nice and attentive. Was not expecting much from a BBQ joint but I was shocked at how good their sides were. The pulled chicken, pulled pork, and sliced brisket were okay, but not the best I have ever had. We were recommended to go here from a friend that went to JMU. My boyfriend got the BBQ combo platter (brisket and pulled chicken) with the pasta salad and Brussels for this sided and I had the pulled pork platter and the Mac and cheese and Brussels, jimmy style. Everything was really good except the brisket, he unfortunately got a bad cut and majority of it was fat and the parts that were meat weren't as flavorful as he hoped. We were in town and decided to try them. It was a mixed bag. The pulled pork was very good - moist and flavorful. The mustard-based bbq sauce was a good addition. The brisket was ok. It lacked a smoked flavor and even the moist brisket was dry. I tried not to judge it based on my brisket at home (in Texas) so I asked those in our party for their opinion and theirs was identical so there you have it. The turkey was really good - flavorful and very moist. The deep fried pickles were probably good but should be removed from the take-out menu. We arrived well before our food was ready and it was only a 10-minute drive and the pickles (wrapped tightly in foil) were a soggy mess - inedible. The Jimmy Sprouts were truly amazing. My wife and I aren't real brussel sprout fans but the description with the nuts and bacon and glaze sounded great and did not disappoint! The portion was very generous and great! The Farmer Salad with grilled chicken was also very flavorful and fresh - very tasty and from the samples I had, I would order it in the future. The Hush Puppies were not good. While they were crispy on the outside and moist on the inside, which was good, they had absolutely no flavor whatsoever and nobody ate more than 1/2. The coleslaw was great - a mayo based coleslaw which was fresh and very tasty - and I'm a coleslaw snob, so that says a lot of I liked it. The broccoli salad was surprisingly very good. It had cheese, pine nuts, soaked golden raisins (not chewy) with a creamy coleslaw type dressing with a hint of dill- it was really good. So - if I could it would have been a 3.5 Stars but since there are no 1/2 stars I will err on the generous side and give 4 Stars. Really cool place, appreciate the rustic ambiance and looks like plenty of room for large parties. The service was good. Not excellent, but good. The food was just ok though, expected better considering the reviews. My brisket was just shy of where it should be on the cook, but tasted decent. My wife said her pulled pork was dry and had that day old vibe contrary to the servers comment about made fresh daily. We ordered appetizers first which were a meal all on their own: brisket nachos and crab dip w the pita chips for an extra $1. The pita chips were greasy and the crab dip could be better, also a very small amount compared to the ratio of pita chips. Finally stopped at JMads as my son is a 2nd year at JMU. Four of us were able to walk in at 1pm on a Saturday and be seated right away, although it became crowded soon after. The restaurant has a cool, old time bar vibe. Lots of seating, great bar and not too loud. We ordered drinks. While this is a whiskey bar and they had some great whiskey cocktails, we had to drive home so no chance to try this time. Overall, I recommend it, but our experience could've been more smooth. We may have just hit an off day, but my critique is that the service was a slow and seemed uninterested. Late lunch on a Sunday while passing through with my kids, the restaurant wasn't busy by any means, and the staff consistently congregated and chatted by the host podium. I had to flag down a server several times, which made me feel pushy and obnoxious, and we're an easy going crew. On the positive side, food was pretty dang good. Menu has good variety, all executed well (smoked wings were outstanding). Appropriately heavy on smoked meats with plenty of other options. Not a top choice for lighter fare, for sure. Location is great, interior decor/vibe/ambiance is surprisingly cozy for a relatively large space with high ceilings. Every spot's service team will have less-than-stellar days occasionally, so our experience won't keep us from returning at some point when visiting the 'Burg. read more

Parking wasn't too bad but did park on the street and had a short walk over. We had many allergies and the GM was great is helping us navigate through what to order and such. So why the two stars? Unfortunately the food. So we had asked for moist/fatty brisket, however, the brisket was left less than desirable. Super dry and tough, you needed a knife to cut it! As a place that highlights its bbq, it was super disappointing. (Mission BBQ is so much better and they're a low baseline!) the pictures looked moist and tender, but as some of the other reviews have mentioned, the brisket was extremely disappointing. This restaurant was one of the only places open during our visit to the area on a Sunday. It's pretty spacious, with seating upstairs and downstairs. The staff are very friendly and took care of us quickly, even though it seemed to be pretty busy. We started with the Brussels sprouts and they were sooo good! I had the pulled pork platter. My sides were fries and mashed potatoes (yes, I doubled up on potatoes, sue me). Both were just normal fries and mashed potatoes.
