The prime rib was cooked well, the mussels were flavorful, and the barbecue platter had a good variety. The service was great--fast, courteous, and attentive without making us feel rushed. The restaurant was clean and had a nice atmosphere. It felt lively and energetic, but it was not too loud to have a conversation. My partner and I came for dinner last night (a Tuesday). We arrived around 5:45 pm and were promptly seated. The restaurant was not very busy, but there was a pleasant vibe. The inside reminds me of a Chili's or Ruby Tuesday, but a bit darker. I think it's a nice atmosphere, appropriate for date night, a group, a family, etc. Our server (who has worked here for 3 years) was friendly and efficient. To start, we ordered a bowl of yesterday's soup special (She crab) and a small order of boiled shrimp. The soup was excellent, creamy, and with small pieces of crab throughout. The shrimp (six in the small order) were prepared well and came with a tangy cocktail sauce. The server brought over a loaf of their complimentary bread, which is actually three breads together in a single loaf. The bread was good (I preferred the dark loaf part) and came with a peach butter. We were told that the butters change periodically. The butter had pieces of peach in it (!) and we enjoyed the novelty. Our server mentioned that they also have a pistachio butter and maple butter. Yum. I ordered a salad with the balsamic vinaigrette dressing on the side. The salad itself was good - fresh, with crisp lettuce, tomato, cucumber, apple, almond pieces, etc. Then there was the dressing. Although I mixed the salad dressing in the cup before tasting it, when I did taste it, it was almost all oil with no discernible vinegar or other flavor. I kept stirring and tasting and nothing. So I abandoned the dressing. For entrees, my partner ordered the charbroiled salmon in herb butter with a side of broccoli. The salmon was prepared well and very tasty. I ordered the mahi-mahi, with the sun-dried tomato butter sauce on the side. The mahi-mahi was well prepared and tasty on its own. Honestly, I tasted the sun-dried tomato butter sauce and it was essentially whipped butter. I didn't think it added anything to the entree so I didn't use it. The potato came with butter and sour cream on the side. The potato was very good. Although we were full and not planning on dessert, the server came over with small cups of peppermint ice cream, calling it a "palate cleanser." It was very good and a nice touch. Other than the salad dressing and the sauce for the fish, it was an excellent meal in a nice atmosphere with good service. visiting Staunton for the first time we went to the Mill Street Grill our first night. it did not disappoint. our waiter Gianni was attentive and helpful, made sure we were enjoying our meal - good job. the Grill is known for its ribs I had the baby back ribs. these ribs were cooked perfectly, some of the best I have ever had. Grt them if you like ribs. My only regret and it was my own taste buds the bbq sauce needed some heat. My wife had chicken with artichoke hearts and sauce. My husband and I came here for dinner for date night on Saturday. The restaurant itself is not fancy but you could dress up or come casual depending on the occasion. We joined the waitlist which we highly recommend because when we showed up, our table was ready and it looked like a long wait otherwise. Our waitress was nice. I guess she thought my ID was fake though because it was the real ID, so she had the manager come over to double check lol. If she had asked for my husband's ID she would've saw they were the same though. For drinks, I got the winter cosmo and my husband got a glass of the Rouge red wine. They make their own bread and it's 3 types of bread in 1 for their bread basket served with a banana almond butter. It was yummy! We both got a cup of clam chowder as appetizers which was delicious. For dinner I did the crab cake meal with extra rice and my husband got the prime rib with mashed potatoes. Food was delicious and a lot of it! We ate here on Sunday night, and I ordered the fried oysters. I took a bite and immediately had to spit it out. The smell was absolutely horrific, straight-up rotten, foul, and rancid. Even though I didn't swallow it, enough bacteria got through that I still ended up with a mild stomach virus by Tuesday morning. Keep in mind, these oysters were fried. They were battered, seasoned, and dropped in boiling oil, which are all things that usually mask minor flavor issues. For a rotten stench to break through all of that batter and oil, those oysters had to be deeply decomposed before they ever hit the kitchen. To make matters worse, the manager came over and tried to gaslight us. He claimed they "started ordering from a new place" and that the "taste was definitely off, but they weren't bad oysters." Let's be clear: a new supplier might change the saltiness or the texture of seafood, but a new supplier does not make your food smell like a biohazard. That wasn't a "different flavor profile," it was a major food safety violation. The kitchen completely failed to check their seafood, and management lied to avoid liability instead of taking accountability. Save yourself a trip to the doctor and avoid this place entirely. I will say, our server was delightful and was very gracious about everything, which is the only reason the restaurant didn't get 1*. read more

A little conversation is always good We started off with a delicious salad, with crushed bacon, hard boiled egg, iceberg lettuce and tomatoes and cucumber. Plate was cold as was the salad. I won on "who picked the better meal" that night. I was SO full after eating half of it. I ended up eating it for lunch the next day. But that ENTIRE morning, I was just thinking about eating it for lunch. It's mouth-wateringly good. A MUST HERE! Prosciutto & Provolone Stuffed Chicken (chicken stuffed with prosciutto ham, provolone, sauteed in a marsala wine sauce with onions, mushrooms, and garlic. Served over angel hair pasta) $23 - it was ok. Wouldn't get again. It was FULL of mushrooms to the point where it felt like we were just taking bites out of a mushroom for dinner. Service (4/5): This place was packed. We had a 40 min wait where we just walked around the building and up the little bridge area. You get a pager that buzzes when it's your turn, so you can't go far, but you can still get your legs moving. The place inside was PACKED with people, so service was obviously slow. We played about 8 games of Uno (I won 7/8 games) in between ordering and getting our dinner. Our waitress was very sweet and ended up giving us free ice cream at the end! I'm not sure if it was because we were playing Uno while waiting instead of complaining that it was taking too long, or because of the long wait and it was an apology? Stopped by after a hike, and I absolutely recommend the prime rib cooked medium with a side of the mashed potatoes! It was cooked perfectly, and the fatty bits melted in my mouth! The food is always very good here, not great, but very good. Some of their choices of dipping sauces, butters, and dressings leave a lot to be desired, sometimes, but they are always willing to substitute when possible. Parking can be difficult here as the front spots by the door are usually taken early so you may have to park down below and drop off older visitors by the door. I enjoy their peppermint, ice cream which is given to eat in customers at no additional cost as a sweet treat in addition to or as part of your dessert. A couple of negatives would be that the tables are slightly too close to each other and that they do not take reservations, which can be a problem when you're trying to bring a large parties. read more

The combination pork and beef ribs were cooked to perfection. The garlic mashed potatoes and coleslaw were a great addition to the almost cartoonish size dish. Wow super busy ,packed and we got here at a decent dinner time, put our name down and hit the bar, on the road driving since 8 AM ,first beer tasted so good. Lots of people,very friendly locals,ended up sitting at the bar for dinner faster than the wait. Male bartender w no personality served our beers. Friendly people's chatting w us told us to get the Cajun prime rib, we did, so delicious! Prior was a amazing salad with the bacon dressing. It was perfect and not warm or greasy, loved all of it ! Just a great meal at this obviously old mill building by railroad tracks. The room is obviously old with brick floors that really tell a story. The room is broken up into cozy booths so it's lends itself to a quiet romantic dinner. That means you don't see the cool stained glass from every table etc but it can be a plus. They have an excellent complementary bread baked on site and served with strawberry butter. I had the pork chops with peppercorn sauce. They were very very good and so much I could only eat one. It came with excellent fried green tomatoes. Loved this dish and would order it again. Easily shared by two. The wife had the barbecue chicken, again two large chicken breasts easily shared. She would have preferred the barbecue sauce on the side but the chicken was excellent. At he Ned of the meals they ring you a complimentary peppermint ice cream to "clean your palate. Did a call in order as we were driving up I 81. Ended up eating in the restaurant, but kind of felt like second class citizens since we had our food in containers rather than plates Servers didn't want to take any responsibility for helping us with water, silverware or napkins so that was a bit of a concern that management needs to recognize that take out customers still help pay the expenses and payroll for the staff. There was one redeeming staff member who got us a small serving of mint ice cream before we left. We tipped on the takeout order and also tipped the staff member who brought us ice cream. I think in the end it was about a 20% tip. The food was good, but I can't let go with that feeling that we had while we ate of being ignored or a bother to those employees for simple dining amenities. I'm not ready to give up on this restaurant, we try to stop there every north south trip we make up 81 for the past 20 years. read more

We have eaten at The Mill Street Grill under different ownerships and the quality has remained the same and through all the bread with flavorded butter has been fantastic without any change being made, menus remain delicious as well as the complimentary peppermint ice cream. A perfect ending to a filling meal. The wait staff are willing to go out of their way to please and the ambiance is not duplicated anywhere. It has retained the charming characteristics of an old millroom where many, many farmers in the beautiful Valley of Virginia took their grain to be ground in days long passed. We are new to the area. We love a good steak every now & then. Heard from a few people saying this place was EXCELLENT.. Well, for us, this was the Worst steak ever! The steak, had so much gristle that I couldn't even eat it. They got another persons steak completely wrong. For the expense of their food, it is definitely NOT worth the price. We dined for the first time last night at the Mill Street Grill. As I explain below,it was an exceptional experience. In my 75 years, the best soft shell crabs I ever tasted were those I enjoyed last night. Here's what's more. Nancy ordered cold boiled shrimp, but complained that they were hard to eat because they had not been deveined. She asked for another knife. The manager came to our table to explain the preparation. Then he offered to replace the entree with shrimp that were lightly broiled in butter. They were terrific. I know of nowhere else that would have made that offer unsolicited.
