Six of us went to lunch on graduation day at James Madison University without a reservation. The day was cool, but we were really, really hungry so we agreed to eat outside. There was a heater, so we figured we could stand it. The hostess rearranged the tables to seat us close to the heater, and left menus. Soon a waitress came with water and took drink orders. Not long after she returned to take our food orders. While we were waiting for the food, someone brought us some warm blankets. All through our meal people kept checking to see whether we needed anything. It was the best service I have seen in a long time, and I arrange a bi-monthly lunch outing for a club I belong to. The food was delicious. The salmon sandwich was incredible, the burrata appetizer was to die for, and I wish everyone had such good French fries. Finally went to Rocktown Kitchen after years of living in the area. We arrived for an early dinner with friends. The staff greeted us warmly and told us about the nightly specials. The space is urban chic with a moderate sized dining room and small bar. I would describe the menu as "upscale comfort". Elevated pork chop, meatloaf, pasta for example. At our table we ordered the swordfish nightly special, the wild mushroom pasta, the pork chops, and the potato croquette appetizer. All were beautifully plated and delicious. We also had two exceptional glasses of Chardonnay, and some beautiful cocktails. We enjoyed our evening. This is a great place for a special night out without needing to be fancy or fussy. read more

Rocktown Kitchen scored a hat trick today. We sat outside on the deck on a perfect March day. Sophia was excellent and provided fantastic service. We ordered one of the specials, which was a grilled chicken, Gyro sandwich and substituted the side with the arugula salad. The Gyro could have used a little bit more seasoning but was very tasty. The arugula salad was the best I've had and served with beets, feta, onions, pecans, and couscous. We actually ordered a second one. We also ordered the Reuben sandwich which was served with a hefty portion of corned beef and served on marble rye. I got the iceberg salmon salad. The salmon was wonderful, the salad was basically some iceberg lettuce white huge pile of shredded carrots next to it, there were a couple of small grape tomatoes. I didn't feel like it was worth $22. The service was extremely slow considering there didn't seem to be very many people in the restaurant. All in all, I'd say it was good, but not somewhere I'd go back to considering the price for what I got. read more

It's been about a year since we've been in town and we decided to try them again since we loved their food the last time we were in town. The staff was very friendly and our server was very helpful. We tried the meatloaf with bbq which came with macaroni and cheese and green beans. The meatloaf was tender and very flavorful. The green beans had bacon and a great taste and the macaroni and cheese was very good - creamy and cheesy! We also tried the Prime Rib with green beans and asparagus - the Prime Rob was perfectly prepared; the asparagus was cooked just right and the green beans were of course very tasty. The au jus had a great flavor and the fresh horseradish was full of flavor. We also tried the Mahi Mahi with cauliflower risotto and mixed vegetables which were all very good. For dessert we had the crème bruelee which was very good - not the best we've had but top five for sure. We also tried the coconut tres leche which had a great flavor and texture. Finally, we tried the chocolate brownie with chocolate ice cream and raspberry drizzle, which was actually very good considering how simple it was. I had an amazing dinner at Rocktown. I came pretty late after driving in town. I was looking for something local and delicious, and settled on this spot. I sat at the bar feening for a Moscow mule. The bartenders were amazing. I didn't catch their names, however, they were a blast! So personable and friendly. I felt like I've been coming in for years. Even the patrons were super fun to talk to! I ordered the salmon. It came with cauliflower risotto, Brussels sprouts and butternut squash. For some reason, I imagined cauliflower risotto to be like cauliflower rice. I was wondering how they were going to risotto cauliflower LOL. But it was delicious risotto with cauliflower chunks in it. I really appreciated the amount of veg they give for their meals. The salmon was so good. Everything went very well together. I cleaned the plate! I am definitely coming back to this spot again. We came to the Rock because of the glowing reviews and because they still had open table slots left on Friday before V-Day. Service, ambiance, 5, but things fell down when it came to the kitchen. I got the meatloaf that was praised on Yelp and my V got the shrimp and grits. Shrimp and grits not bad, but you could tell the shrimp was not a premium shrimp, it was an average farm raised shrimp. The andouille sausage bits were burnt. Things really fell off the wagon with the meatloaf. For $25, I was expecting an excellent meatloaf that has a little bit of crumble and flavor. If not for the glaze on top, this really would have been flavorless. I believe it was overdosed with breadcrumbs. Mac and cheese was not, but you can get much better mac at Jimmy Madison's BBQ. Green beans were overcoooked because a few strings were actually black. The fried onion strings were on point! Please take this as honest feedback, not criticism. read more

The food was a little touch and go. Fried green tomato - good crust on the outside. Nice sauce, but maybe a dollop of goat cheese on the plate would be a nice addition in case you want more tang. The meatloaf with mashed potatoes was very good! The mac and cheese could be slightly creamier with more cheese. The steak was cooked to medium-rare, just how i like it, but it was lukewarm, as if it had sat for a little too long. My sister got the shrimp and grits. Being from NC, we've had a fair number of this dish. The grits were not smooth and velvety, but grainy and toothsome. The sausage "croutons" were way too hard (borderline burnt) and very overpowering. The manager did comp it, so not mad about it. The vibe is like country meets fancy and done really well. The drinks were really good and you can tell they were handcrafted with attention to detail. I went here spring of 2024 (forgot to review) and got a salmon and risotto. The risotto was a very small portion c the salmon was OK but dry in my opinion for the price. I think the food was ok but at it price point I expected it to be better. I am not a big person and I ate everything on my plate and still left still a little hungry. While driving down I81 for business we stopped in for lunch on a weekday. Nice place in a warehouse looking area downtown. The menu is loaded with interesting "foodie" types items, all made fresh, in-house, from scratch and they all sounded very appetizing! Our server was excellent, friendly, and helpful. They have a full bar which looked like it was loaded with everything to make craft cocktails, as well as the typical rail drinks. The items we tried were really good! Potato leek soup was excellent! I really enjoyed this restaurant! It's nestled in the historic downtown area of Harrisonburg. It's very close to JMU and has plenty of parking. The farm to table menu had plenty of options and offered a few specials as well as seasonal drinks. We stopped in on a Friday night around 7pm and didn't have a reservation. This place was PACKED!!!! So much so I almost turned around before even making it to the hostess stand. Luckily, I stayed the course and we were seated outside after about a 15 minute wait. We ordered two appetizers. The fried oysters and an order of wings. Both were very good. The wings were probably the best I've had in a while. They had a traditional vinegar buffalo flavor profile that you don't find very often anymore. The oysters were very tasty, but they were just fried oysters. Nothing special about them, but still worth ordering again. The drink special was a hot spiced apple hot toddy style drink (can't remember the name). Soooooo good! Perfect for a fall crisp night. Again, this place was packed. Appetizers came out so fast and then everything ground to a halt. It took forever for our entrees to be served. Our waiter continuously checked on us, but the wait was insane. Had we not gotten starters, I probably would have left. Yes, it was that bad. However, when our meals were finally served everything was fantastic. I got the salmon. Really good and cooked to perfection. The star for me was the cauliflower rice side. I could have made a meal out of that. I finished the evening off with the peanut butter pie. Delicious. Definitely a must try. The steak was cooked to perfection, absolutely delicious, with mashed potatoes and asparagus adding fantastic texture and completing the dish in a very artistic and tasteful way.
