First off, this ain't no fancy, pretty joint. The interior ain't cute. If that's what you want, don't. Second of all, it's worth it! Every time I visit Dallas I drive down 90 minutes and enjoy. Location: This place has been around for a while and you can see it. you seem to be transported into a fried chicken place from the early 80s when you walk in. One of the windows was broken from an apparent rock projectile as I overheard but apart from that the place is what you expect from an old local spot. Service: The army of chicken peddalers behind the counter are needed to serve the high volume of customers they get. They are nice and efficient the way fast food workers should be. Food: I opted for one of their individual meals being the 3 peice 3 roll and 2 sides for around 9 bucks, you can choose to only get the 3x3 and skip the sides for only 5 bucks which I will do if I ever come back through. Mac and cheese: the macaroni was generously cheesy although the amount you get for what is essentially 2bucks is borderline passable. Mashed potatoes: now of course im not expecting grandma's secret Thanksgiving recipe from a small fast food place, but when conglomerate corporate franchise chains have significantly better mash than you somethings got to be done. I could've forgiven what is unashamedly instant mashed potatoes if there had been any attempt to season them beyond just the gravy. The fact that they were barely even lukewarm did them in for me. Rolls: the rolls where good. Classic fried chicken yeast rolls with a good texture and warm. Much warmer than the mashed potatoes. Lol I'm sorry, I just cant get over bad mash that easy. Chicken: The star of the show, well somewhat. The chicken was cooked well, no doubt about that. It was very Krispy as the name implies and you do get the option to choose what type of peices you want. The only caveat was that they were just a tad bit oily. Now I'm no stranger to a good dose of fry grease but they couldve let them sit on the rack for just a couple more mins to let the oil come off a bit more. Flavor wise, they were what you expect from a local town spot. Final thoughts: Fried chicken and rolls is what they are known for so just stick to those. This is that local town chicken spot to grab a meal for the whole family. The price point is good with just the chicken and you will get your fill. My husband had the fried chicken and he said the meat was great and batter was good. We wanted to come to this place to try some local food and that is exactly what you will find. The service was good and you can tell there are a lot of regulars that come back. The least favorite was the okra which was not really good because no flavor and texture was not as crispy. We were staying at Fort Parker State Park and I yelped to see what interesting restaurants might be nearby. (What did we do before Yelp?) I found a highly rated bbq place and off we drove. Oops, bbq place closed before closing time, Yelp again and thankfully found Jim's Crispy Chicken, it must have been fate. In a nutshell the best fried chicken this northern gal has ever had! Friendly service, clean eat in dining room as well as an outdoor carry out window. This place hops, there were lines inside and outside when we were there. Did I mention that we ate there two nights in a row because it was so good? Basically you order how many and what pieces of chicken you want (breasts are .50 extra) and with each piece of chicken you get a warm homemade yeast roll. Honey is provided. A two piece meal with two rolls was about $2.50. The chicken is crispy, not greasy, cooked through, served hot, and all pieces were juicy. My husband also loved the chicken fried steak served w mashed potatoes and gravy and I thought the mac and cheese was very good, smooth, creamy and very cheesy. And if you get a hankering for fried chicken or catfish while in Mexia and pop into Jim's Krispy Fried Chicken on Hwy 84, you will be eating at the restaurant she worked at while in high school. You might think, being in Mexia and all, that the only good thing about Jim's is the Anna Nicole notoriety, but you'd be wrong. Jim's makes good fried chicken, and sells it with good sides, too: rolls, cole slaw, beans, mashed potatoes and cream gravy (not that brown Colonel Sanders stuff). The catfish is good, too. They'll dish it up in styrofoam dinner boxes, or you can get family packs if you're looking for a dining free-for-all. I've never gotten dessert here -- don't even know if any's on the menu -- nor have I gotten the gizzards 'n' livers. But everything else is pretty good eating.
