Our regular stop when we come through the area. Still good, tasty enough to be a destination just to have a good old-fashioned meal. Inside looked like it got a face lift since we were here last, looked really nice. Service is always stellar, fast, friendly, and efficient. Makes you miss small town friendly. Food was spectacular. Sometimes it's hard to find good options in the East Texas region. Service was great, small town hospitality. Live, laugh, love! This place has such a great old-fashioned feel and a huge variety of options. I usually get the chicken fried chicken, and it tastes homemade rather than premade, which I love. The mac and cheese is my personal favorite, and even the restrooms have a cool Fallout-style theme. Such a gem in the middle of nowhere! We were roadtripping to Galveston and I used yelp to find a lunch spot. This place came up, so we gave it a try. We all had delicious root beer floats, and various sandwiches and salads. The decor was funky and fun and included a neon banana light, an old fashioned TV that still works, and a soda fountain bar with real pennies in a cool design. Check this place out!! read more

This diner would have been a full five stars had we received refills, brought us to go containers, or checked on us. That aside this was a really nice place to grab dinner as a family. The food was very well presented, great tasting and very generous portions. We had a little of everything at our table, breakfast, burgers, house salad, Sunday special (turkey & dressing), nachos. Everything was great and delicious. We all had a big laugh at how big my turkey and dressing portion was, it ended up being three meals for me (glad I love thanksgiving food lol). Definitely worth the stop on your map. Grab some of the pecan brittle at the checkout counter for the road too, you can thank me later. It's a small country diner with the typical well-worn metal-edged diner tables and booths. The booth windows are plastic and rattle when you sit down. Lots of locals were here, filling about half the place. We must have come in just after the lunch rush, as the floor was littered with bits of food and trash. Our server was friendly and was happy to answer questions about the menu. She even offered to get us to-go cups at the end of the meal. She said most people order their enchiladas, and the post-church crowd likes the BLT. We ordered a BLT with fries ($0.79 add) and a chicken sandwich with chips. The BLT and chicken sandwich were fine - typical diner/Dairy Queen-ish fare. Definitely worth a stop if you'd like to eat local, quick vittles on the cheap. read more

I went here twice this week. The first visit was great with fresh food and a friendly waitress. The second visit however was unacceptable. When we walked in, you could tell they finished a dinner rush. A third of the tables in the restaurant were unoccupied and had plates on them. The place is seat yourself, so we did. We waited for ~15 minutes for an employee to acknowledge us and noticed locals who came in *after us* got seated and handed menus upon their arrival, and we still were not greeted, nor given menus. Needless to say, we left. Although the food is good, there are other options in the area. I'd think twice about going back. read more

I wanted to try a place that I had never tried before, Ponte's it was ! I got there right at 7am (opening time) and took a seat. I was greeted as I sat down and the waitress took my drink order. The first thing I noticed when I sat down , was how clean the restaurant was. Really, table, floor...... it was all very clean. As we all know, that is a place most folks could spend a little more time at. I ordered the bacon and cheese omelet, which came with hash browns and biscuits & gravey. Dang it was good !! The waitress was very friendly and the food excellent. This is a place, I have no problem referring to you. EAT HERE. Great diner food with a massive menu. We started off with chips and salsa, salsa was fresh and had great flavor. Pretty mild on the heat. My husband got enchiladas and said they were solid and I had the cheeseburger and onion rings. The burger had that yummy, well seasoned flattop grill flavor. We stopped here on way back from Galveston looking for some quick lunch. This is right off I-45 so very convenient. It's a cute little diner and has a huge menu. The seats and interior may need some upgrades but it always seems the best diners are always in this category. I don't mind as the place was clean and we were there for the food anyway and not the furnishings. And it definitely wasn't a "dive"! My husband had the open-faced chicken fried steak with his choice of sides were fried okra and fries. The okra and fries came out on a huge plate and the chicken fried steak on a separate large platter. He said all of it was hot and very good! I had the Saturday special of two sour cream chicken enchiladas with refried beans and rice which also came with fresh salsa and chips. So good! The chicken enchiladas were great tasting as was the sour cream sauce. I found these better than I had at a couple of other Mexican restaurants in the same area on previous trips. We wanted to get the ice cream but couldn't finish half of our meal. Maybe next time. As good as the food was, our waitress was fabulous. So sweet and so very attentive! For a diner out in the middle of nowhere, this is a don't miss. This place has been around for at least 30 years. I know...I spent the first half of my life in Dallas and the second half in Houston with family members on both sides. But I only knew because of the road signs I've seen for decades-- I never stopped in. I stopped in last Wednesday in the middle of the afternoon and it was unsurprisingly empty for that time of day. I took that turn off the exit looking for a DQ and to get grubby with some steak fingers and tacos. No DQ. Just Ponte's. What the hell, right? Besides, they were advertising breakfast and enchiladas. For its age, I was expecting peeling paint behind some yellowed Merle Haggard-genre concert posters. It was bright, crisp, and very clean. I've seen the pics that have been posted here, and could only offer the same. A nice soda fountain bar along one side where you can even get a "phosphate" -- the real deal. An internet juke box slightly intimidated me. You couldnt ask for much better variety for road trip food. A couple of pages devoted to breakfast, a couple of Tex-Mex, a page of some attractive looking sandwiches and burgers, one for well-rounded American fare (chops, meatloaf, etc), and a page for the soda fountain. Hell, even the steak fingers I was looking for were there -- but I strayed. Like I said, I live in Houston where there is a Mexican restaurant or taqueria on every corner with sometimes extra corners inserted for that very purpose. I am always in search of the circa 1970 El Chico sour cream chicken enchilada so when I saw they offered them, I went for it. I was very encouraged when the chips and sauce came out. Freshly fried, light, and very crisp. The salsa was up to the task. I like pickled jalapenos COOKED on my enchiladas and had requested same. No one ever gets this simple request right. Ponte's did! The waiter even came out with a sample to confirm I wanted pickled rather than fresh. I loved that. So out it comes, looking like a picture. So I took a picture. A side of beans and rice, both average, and a very large crispy taco adorned with a tremendous amount of veggies and shredded cheese. The ground beef could have been spicier, I thought. Alongside that was a scoop of guac sitting on a bed of shredded lettuce LIKE IT ALWAYS SHOULD BE AND NEVER IS. It was not over-seasoned and could in no way be any fresher. So, the moment of truth: the enchiladas were thickly stuffed with moist, shredded chicken, appropriately seasoned. The sauce -- I thought it was good, but was it? What is that I'm tasting? Cumin! Cumin in the sour cream sauce! I tossed around whether this might have been a violation of Sour Cream Chicken Enchilada Protocol, but after the third bite, I was sold. Almost $15 with an ice tea (you have to affirmatively opt-out of pre-sweetened tea in the Texas hinterlands) but considering the quality, and definitely the quantity since I couldn't finish it, it was more than fair. I had a chat with the manager, Nate Turner, and expressed my pleasure. Nice young fellow who'd been around a bit before settling into Fairfield. He digs the vibe there. I won't be doing anymore Dallas/Houston runs without planning my stop at Ponte's Diner and neither should you. read more

Sometimes trying to be multifaceted can bite you in the butt. Like when Garth Brooks tried to be a whole other person in the rocker Chris Gaines (seriously...are we just never going to talk about that?) or when I tried to be both awesome at English and amazing at math (it's one or the other people) or like when Cheesecake Factory does ANYTHING other than cheesecake. So you can imagine my dismay when, on the first day of family vacation, the kids decided on Ponte's Diner, a place that serves not just diner fare. Oh no, this place does Tex-Mex, breakfast all day and has a blue bell ice cream menu. I was prepared for utter disappointment akin to "From Justin to Kelly" magnitude. Instead I got a "Clay Mathews & the Green Bay Packers in Pitch Perfect 2" experience, meaning it was great (watch it and love their version of Bootylicious) and completely unexpected. Fairfield is nothing more than the halfway point between Dallas and Houston, and there are a couple of other options in this small town but we have already tried those (we come to Galveston each summer) and weren't impressed. One kid said she wanted a burger and the other said Mexican food. That's the reason we ended up here and the liars both ended up getting breakfast fare, which they ate all of four bites of before shaking me down for milkshakes. We got queso and it was really good. So were the bean and cheese nachos. Look, it's not going to wow you on the Mexican food side, but it's pretty standard if you like that food. The pancakes are SUPER FLUFFY and huge, so I'd highly recommend it. We got pancakes with bacon and it came with like half a pound of bacon, so my fat behind isn't complaining. My other kid got a cheddar cheese omelette and Jesus Christ Superstar they must have dumped a pound of cheese in it. Again...we aren't complaining. My cholesterol is probably screaming at me to drop the freaking ranch dressing, but whatever. The milkshakes are 100% Blue Bell, so if you are Texan or just a decent human being, you'll agree those are the best. They were made right in front of us and they taste like homemade awesomeness. Great service and decent prices make this place a great place to stop without fear that you'll be Tim Tebowed (you can't play ANY SPORT BRO) so I give a 5, regardless if that's how many years I just ate off my life. read more
