On the way back to DFW from College Station we stopped at Sam's on Sunday, 3/8. I was so glad we did!! This place has an absolutely amazing lunch buffet! The salad stuff was fresh and the dressings were all good. On the hot side of the buffet they had chicken friend steak, ham, turkey and dressings, bbq brisket and friend chicken. Everything was excellent! The sides were all great. I imagine their homemade pies are amazing but I was too full to try any of them! I will 100% be back anytime I am nearby!!! read more

My dad has been coming here for years, I believe this was my first time. My dad went for the buffet, and I ordered a la carte. First, the service was excellent, I believe our server was named Presley. Very kind, always checking on us and keeping our water and tea full. On the buffet, my dad enjoyed the salad he had, but was surprised at the little variety offered that day. He said last time he was there with my brother there was more to choose from. He then got the fried chicken, which was greasy and barely any chicken on the thigh. I tried to find a drumstick but it was just breasts, thighs and a few wings. He did like the chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes. As for the fried okra, you have to eat it fresh. It is sitting under a heat lamp just makes it soggy and slimy. I ordered 4 vegetables a la carte which came out to be as much as the all you can eat buffet. First, their onion rings are OUTSTANDING! So is their homemade ranch. What was disappointing was the green beans, they definitely came out of a can and were heated. At $3.99 I expected fresh. There may have been a small piece of onion in it. Not sure if that was how it was cooked or if it fell in from another dish. The black-eyed peas were tasty. I also had a cup of the chicken corn chowder which was good. However, there was pieces of cubed chicken in it which also made me think that it was a prepackaged soup and not homemade. My dad got the coconut cream pie, which tasted good, but could have used more coconut then just on the top. He wanted bread pudding or peach cobbler, however at the time of day we were there, they had been picked over way too much, not leaving much for anyone else to enjoy. I did like the selections in the gift shop and purchased a tea towel before we left. I always like to try a place 3 times so I may stop in and try something else. Old style country buffet that reminds me of being in Central Texas during the '70s. Fried chicken, chicken fried steaks cream gravy, a big loaf of yeast bread when you sit down.... Sweet tea, candy yams three different cobblers and an assortment of pies... And plenty more. This place is basically halfway between Houston and Dallas on i-45 and it's hard for us to pass up, even with all the restaurants, we'll see in Dallas or Left behind in Houston. Determined to finally try something new - and to not hit up the usual Buc-ee's or Woody's and the like - we stopped at Sam's last Friday. And I'm glad we did! But if you have time to sit down at a classic Texas comfort food joint and enjoy a buffet with items such as southern fried chicken, fried catfish, brisket w. BBQ sauce, fried okra, corn, mashed potatoes, and a whole lot more, then Sam's is worth checking out. They also have an ala carte menu of southern classics. Oh, and if you opt to do the buffet as I did, you can help yourself to a few different freshly made warm desserts or ice cream, and at no extra charge. $19.99 was more than fair for buffet and that's more than fair for what you get. The fried chicken was super crispy, and the mashed potatoes with white gravy were perfect alongside the brisket and corn. They also have banana pudding, cakes, pie, and jello for dessert, plus salad and punch options. Sam's Original Restaurant is the hidden gem every Texan wants to find! My friend Jeff recommended Sam's as we were driving back from a road trip to an A&M game. Little did I know I would have one of the best American buffets in Texas! The food was wonderfully made, delicious to the bone, and packed with flavor. The salad bar was freshly prepared; I loved how they also served fresh fruit to go along with it! The service was a prime example of Southern hospitality - every single waitress so kind and greeted us with a gentle demeanor. The desserts you were definitely the best part of the buffet. There was a variety of pies, peach cobbler, and ice cream. My personal favorite was the Coconut Crean Pie - it was astronomically delicious Sam's was a wonderful conclusion to our trip! You can get food to go even if you can't eat it all!! Today I enjoyed the chicken salad sandwich and homemade onion rings it was DELICIOUS!! The hostess is definitely not very engaging, she showed us to our table and set the menus down and quickly left before we were able to even make it to the table( good thing we actually watched where she sat the menus down at!) The restaurant was somewhat busy and the vibe was kind of like a Cracker Barrel ( in the sense of a lot of knickknacks) The food was mostly canned items, and not very good. Super cute restaurant! Had a cool old car out front. Very clean place with a relaxed atmosphere. It was pretty empty which for me is a plus (probably due to the weird time and day we came, a Thursday at 3pm.) Service - We were seated nearly instantly. We were asked if we wanted menus, and we opted for menus. When seated, a nice older lady came and took our drinks. She offered us fresh warm bread and cornbread. Our drinks were always full. At the end, she offered fountain drinks to go which is always a plus in my mind :) COVID - This was my first time being back at a buffet since COVID, but thankfully they were being extremely clean. They had someone consistently cleaning the buffet. Food - The fresh bread and cornbread that was offered was super good. My husband and I looked at the menu as well. It has lots of sandwiches, a few proper meals. The main draw of the place is the definitely the buffet, but I am glad they offer other options (including small portions.) We both ended up opting for the buffet. The buffet food is probably best described as Thanksgiving fare, minus the turkey and stuffing. Very "American homestyle buffet" food. I grabbed some of pretty much everything on the non salad side, so if you look at my pics, you'll see what I mean. I don't eat salad, but my husband told me the salad side was very good as well. Some of the buffet food: fried chicken, chicken and dumplings, sausage, brisket, corn, two types of beans, mashed potatoes, soup and salad bar, and a few other things I think I didn't grab. If you are looking for a buffet that has 1,000 options, this isn't the place. However, what they lack in quantity they make up in quality. Every single thing in the buffet was super good. I definitely prefer when a restaurant has a more limited menu, especially when it means they have perfected the stuff they do have. They also have homemade pie and desserts that you can buy for $5 a piece, or they come with the buffet. I had coconut cream pie. My husband had a vanilla cupcake and peach cobbler. This was my personal favorite part of the meal, but I'm also a big dessert guy. Price - $18 per person for the buffet. The other standalone dishes were similarly priced except for a few things like the smaller portion meals and some of the sandwiches. Definitely more on the pricey side, but not terribly so. I think it's a fair price for the quality of food and to support a local business. Gift shop - This is worth mentioning on its own because it's very cute. They had a surprisingly wide variety of things in there. Clothes, toys, jewelry, locally made goods like soap, their own homemade jellies and canned goods, and even geodes you can take home to break open yourself. It was fun to go after dinner and have a nice little shop to browse. All in all, glad to have come and will definitely be back. Had a table of 3 young men sitting behind my husband and I. There were 2 other tables next to us that had children at their tables. One of the young men was very loud vocally, telling a story, generally appearing like he wanted to be heard by all. And we did. Not a big deal except every other word was eff this, eff that etc. Very unpleasant to dine in that environment. I walked over, asked the young man to be mindful of the children when speaking. He said I was rude and it was none of my business. I requested to speak to a manager on my way out. Tammy was on duty. Apparently I interfered with her dinner because she had zero time to listen to my complaint. Guess she was afraid her dinner would get cold. She said what do you want me to do, I can't control people talking. No Tammy, you can control noise level and maybe act on a customer complaint. Nope, cannot. About that time the offender walks out to leave. Looks like Tammy can go back to her dinner, I don't ever have to return for more burnt fried chicken off the buffet and the offender MAYBE took what I said to heart for his next restaurant invasion. read more

If you like delicious home cooking that you don't have to do yourself, Sam's is the place to go. There was so much delicious food and I didn't have to cook all those items in my own kitchen. My entire family found tons of food to get full on. We enjoyed the fried fish, fried shrimp, sausage, fried chicken, brisket, macaroni and cheese from heaven, and so much more. The only thing I was sad about was the fact that they were running out of pie before 9 o'clock on a Saturday evening. I'm sitting at Sam's, smitten, imagining a life with a waitress, not necessarily my waitress here at Sam's, but one in general, how it would be so different for the both of us. A big city guy, a small town waitress, a simple life away from post-modern indoctrination, away from theaters and bookstores and bakeries decorating their pastries with political messaging... away from a lot of things. God knows I should get further from the city and closer to Sam's Original Restaurant, where the hamburger steak and apple pie don't seem to care about my sexual orientation or pronouns or oil-to-paint ratio. I should paint still life's of buffets and rolls of bread and steak knives and cutting boards. Rustic fare. All the good people at Sam's taking refuge at wooden tables, there limbs laden with slacks or cargo pants for their fishing gear. I saw a gun in a truck in the parking lot and a cooler with neat stickers on it. Outdoor stuff is so foreign to me. I'm as city and as decorative as they come. On a mission to be more practical and utilitarian. Muscle bound. Honor bound. Less licentious. More biblical. More like Sam's Original. I want to be 'pay at the counter'. I yearn to be draped in beef gravy cloaks and grilled onion necklaces. I strive to be mashed and spun, thrown on a hot plate, and devoured by moral people. No longer used by devious ones. When Mr. King calls to tell me that I need to play nice with the heads of museums, the ones I am diametrically opposed to with fourth wave 'isms' shrouding their institutions, I will be a force. A stove flame. A mallet pounding cutlets. They shall be breaded and drenched in my oil and framed and sold just as they continue to try to do with me! Sam's. I've been here a number of times throughout the years, on different occasions. This is the place, especially after a couple of hours of driving along I-45. If you like classic, American food and ambiance, you can't go wrong. The buffet has something for everyone. They also have those mile-high pies. I imagine a lot of locals come here, as I've typically seen a lot of nice, older folks in the dining room. They also have a nice little curio shop. As for service, well Haley is a rockstar! I stopped in and wasn't feeling super great so I probably seemed like a stick in the mud, but she treated me great, just the same. The older waitress that was serving sodas/teas was rude when I asked where were the plates; she did not stop to show me,but kept walking and said that the plates were over there in the middle. O-kay. Here is what I saw on the lunch buffet: fried chicken( only big dry breasts left- seasoned ok.Would have liked a thigh or wing), bbq chicken, chicken fried steak(pretty good)'beef brisket(pretty good),link sausage(pretty good,but spicy), mashed potatoes,spinach(pretty good),green beans,corn,soups,fried okra (pretty good), salad bar with alot of toppings and dressing. I had ranch dressing and it was salty. The dessert area had pies in the refrigerated cabinet and on the line were banana pudding(the texture was goopy-hated it), peach cobbler(very runny and too sweet) and What looked like maybe bread pudding? That was okay. They brought you either corn bread or bread to the table. We received the corn bread.That was crumbly,but okay because that is how I lie my cornbread. Our cups were never empty and our server always check on us. You also could order from the menu, but we were told about this buffet by a fellow diner from another restaurant we eat at to try this buffet. We drove about 1 hour (road trip) to go check it out. II was not worth the trip. The restaurant had a gift shop in the front, which was a nice touch. You pay for your meal and the gift shop and the cashier was not very friendly.
