Dark, smelly, probably not too clean but it's so dark that you can't really see the carpet... Drinks are watered down. I saw people fighting in there and hear really bad feedback about how the owner treats his employees. That being said, they have fun Karaoke nights, a lot of potluck events with much delicious homemade food from the friendly regulars. Bartenders are nice, Jackie is my favorite. Nice and fun. The area isn't very safe. JVL is OK for a quick beer, but that's pretty much about it. read more

I would like to address a few of the reviews that have given us a bad review. First to the military vet. We do very much appreciate our military. We have plenty of regulars that are vets. We welcome service animals, however because of liability issues we request that all service animals be leashed unless that prevents the service animal from performing a specific task that aids their owner. We apologize if the bartender did not explain this to you. We simply can allow animals to come in without being leashed to roam our establishment this places us at risk. We do apologize and welcome all of our service members. The review from Tabitha, we tried to fix the problem that you had mentioned to us, however you made a choice to call the owner who had the solution for you however instead of talking to her about the problem you started screaming calling her names and our staff names without first realizing that the problem was not us it was the way the credit card processing works. If you would have given the owner the opportunity to explain this to you, you quickly would have realized by the next day that the problem resolved it's self. Our contests are not rigged. How can a contest that involves the participation of our guests to vote on the winners be rigged. Popularity gets the win and if the staff or owner won it is because they are well liked by their customers which leaves a lot to be said about the person who is complaining, your attitude has a lot to do with why people did not want you to win. Try approaching people differently without all the screaming, and name calling people will react differently and maybe like you too. We are a average dive bar, we take care of our loyal customers from all different walks of life. We love meeting new people, we do our best to provide a great time by offering free buffets, parties with no cover charge, free ride homes, great contests with cash to be won and good wholesome fun. Went last night because when I was down around Christmas it was very friendly and good service ,so after driving in from Phoenix I decided to go have a drink when I got there the bar tender came over asked how I was doing and where i was coming from told her i was good and coming from home and asked for a beer and a shot. She called me a f***ing liar and said she would give a beer and see how it went. I enjoy stopping in and having a cocktail at Jims. I know all of the bartenders and they are always friendly to me. For me a bartender can make or break an experience. (I avoid some other local establishments for that very reason) I usually know someone I can attempt to shoot a game of pool with. They have 3 pool tables which are kept up nicely. Walked into this bar around 4pm as the bartender was loading ice in various buckets of bottled beer as the cooler was on the fritz. No worries as I wanted a cheap and stiff well drink...which was delivered with an introduction and a smile. Quickly joined in on a conversation between a local contractor and two elderly gentlemen about the movie "The Founder" abut Ray Kroc, who secured the rights to McDonalds burgers back in the day. Come to find out these two codgers worked for his widow Joan as security here in Rancho Santa Fe for many years. This is the kind of serendipitous connections that happen when you walk into a friendly hole in the wall. Big Military banner showing all five services on ceiling above bar, with a picture of the helicopter I used to crew on it. Big win! Some dude my age (51) played "Wuthering Heights" by Kate Bush on the jukebox...and asked who could guess the song. I did and the resulting drink he purchased was appreciated. This is the bar to check out if your in east Vista. JVL is grandfather to all dive bars. We have spent plenty of nights watching people sing karaoke, talking to other regulars and just having a good time at Jim's. The atmosphere is typical dive-bar. The regulars are all tame, and it really is a great place to relax and have a drink where you aren't breaking the bank or worrying about what sort of d-bags you have to deal with. Diviest of the dive bars. Its on e vista way, and the locals come here. I have been here numerous times over the years. Sometimes the regulars have special days where they bring in a crockpot of chilli and serve it to the patrons. What place does that?! A local bar with flavor...teeth, no-teeth, Dolce & Gabanna or your favorite sweats...come as you are, you will be welcomed and have a good time. I ordered a round of drinks for six, and it was less than $20. There is karaoke on Friday and Saturday nights, with some of the most entertaining song choices you will ever hear. Jim's how do you write a review about jim's...... Here is the deal, the place is a great hole in the wall, they have great drink prices and great pool table prices, they do do karaoke if you want on the weekends. It is for sure a bar you and your friends can go in and take over, or if you want to go and just shoot some relax pool. The one issue i do have is with i believe the bar manager, she is nice and all but she needs to watch how she comes at people at first, very aggressive and rude, and i understand that may come with so much time dealing with drunks in the past, but she should really watch it cause I can cause people not to come back and tell others to stay away. At first glance you're like um maybe I shouldn't go in. Definitely a local regular spot, but unlike other bars I've been to, I didn't have any issues with being an outsider. They were having karaoke (yay!) when I went so bonus points. A few tables for pool and a smoking patio out back. The drink specials were on point! I got a pitcher of beer for $6 and it was fireball shot night... $3 a shot. There isn't food but hey you're coming to a bar to drink. The bartender was nice and the vibe was chill. Wonderful little dive. Pool, karaoke, and some of the most well mixed and affordable drinks around. Popped in a couple times with my friends now and it's become our wednesday night staple. My only complaint is you can't take your drinks out on the back smoking patio, but I suppose that's fair enough, considering the neighbors. read more

At most bars, the rate of felons that are in there at a given time might be as high as 10%. This Place is the kind of bar you wait a lifetime to avoid like the Plague! I Had very two good friends who love this place which is the only reason I ever entered this toilet. Since then one has come to his senses one has not. It is dirty and the crowd has all the appeal of Robert DiNero in Cape Fear, on a really bad day, after a 6 month bender.
