I went here for the first time to get a dress tailored. The two people I interacted with were friendly and helpful and answered questions thoroughly. I had to get the dress taken out and made bigger and I was a little worried they wouldn't have the same fabric and color but it worked out! I got the dress a week and a half later and it fit perfectly. It was about $50 which I thought was reasonable. Please note the tailor is only available in the mornings, before 1pm I believe. Very nice people but they consistently mess up my shirts. The press they use leaves weird creases all over them. This is a recurring issue over the last year. I've brought it up and they said to use the more expensive option. (The cheaper option still shouldn't be ruining shirts?...) Even when paying for the more expensive option, the issue persists. It's a bummer because they are close and I like them, but they're ruining my shirts. In my whole life I have never had this issue with a dry cleaner. It's weird. A functioning press that doesn't leave deep, structural creases in dress shirts should be table stakes for a dry cleaner. read more

Face it-- drycleaning is expensive in D.C. Though I don't like coughing up money for drycleaning, sometimes it has to be done. Jin's Cleaners is very reliable, friendly, efficient, and trustworthy. I have taken in: -a silk gown for altering and they did a great job. -a blazer with white cuffs which were very dirty - cleaned up after I pointed it out... and I was impressed. -spots that I hadn't pointed out the first time so it was returned still a bit dirty, and I asked for a discount, so she took 10 or 15% off. -multiple pants, dresses, sweaters - all looking nice, new, and clean. They are careful and courteous. I recommend Jin's cleaners to everyone. I normally would take off a star for price, but I am rating on the quality of service and D.C. drycleaners are all expensive anyway, so I want Jin's to stand out. read more

I loved Jin's - always helpful and friendly....and they even gave us a discount on my husband's uniforms because their son-in-law is in the Army. However, I went to pick up a comforter a few weeks ago, along with some other items. Everything but the comforter was ready and the woman asked me to come back. So I did so yesterday to pick it up and some clothes since we had moved and I needed everything. Not only was my comforter (which I loved, brought it back from Denmark...from the shop where the Danish royals buy their down!) missing, she told me that I had paid for it. I'd remember paying $45 for something, especially something as necessary as a comforter. She told me to go home and look again. Where? I just moved and was pretty certain of my inventory since I had packed and unpacked in the span of a week, including making my bed. And it was a very expensive comforter, so I'd remember where I put it. I'm very upset at the loss of this item. It's a huge comforter - who loses that? I can actually understand a blouse or something like that getting misplaced. But a comforter? And then to insist I had paid for it and simply didn't remember....? nice. Guess read more

I absolutely love Jin's cleaners. I used them for the past year and a half before I moved to Columbia Heights. After trying my neighborhood cleaners I am convinced that it is worth the extra mile to come back to Jin's. All the employees are super friendly. I have dealt not only with the lovely lady that is always taking your clothes, but the tailor, too. They are amazing. I think the prices are about normal for D.C., you can get a small discount if you pay in cash. I trusted Jin's so much that I had them alter my dress for my sister's wedding. When I originally brought it in the lady told me she thought it was impossible to alter/hem my dress (it had three layers of silk with a velvet piping on the bottom). She asked me to come back to talk to the tailor and he said it may be impossible but he would give it a try. Well, he somehow figured it out and it looked fantastic! I originally asked for a sash to be made but we didn't end up making it so they gave me a refund for the sash. Seriously, I miss living across the street from this place. So far, so good. Three great experiences: 1. The woman who usually works the register is so friendly and sweet. She even gave me a discount for no reason (well, probably because I was a new customer / to keep me coming back - it worked). 2. I was thinking of having the sleeves of my suit jacket slightly shorten ($35 in my case due to some buttons at the bottom of the sleeves), but the tailor recommended I leave it as is, that the length was good. I really appreciate that he didn't try to convince me to do it just for my business. 3. I left my work key fob in the pocket of a coat I had dry cleaned. I stopped by to see if they had found it, and while he didn't know what I was talking about, he let me leave a note. I came back on the day of my pick up and not only did the coat look great, they stapled an envelope to the bag with my key fob and the original note I left. They provide excellent service, are honest, and kind -- very rare in the dry cleaning business. read more

I've used Jin's several times, mostly because it is on the same block that I live on. They have more or less done okay at getting the job done. However, after they failed to put foil on the buttons of the cashmere cardigan given to me by my mother, and every single of one the mother of pearl buttons was left damaged, I decided to try something new. I recently moved to the neighborhood and dropped a dress off at Jin's so that it could get hemmed. The young lady at the front desk said that she couldn't give me an estimate as to the charges, but at the most the alternations would be between $30 - 50. I went today to pick up the dress and the charge was $85. I explained that I was told it would be another price and how could a dress that needed to be hemmed up a few inches cost $85, but she insisted that the girl who gave me the estimate was wrong. Super disappointed and will not be using Jin's again. If you go there just make sure you get some kind of reassurance as to how much you might be spending. read more

This has to be one of the worst dry cleaning experiences I have ever had. I decided to try Jin's after my boyfriend had been there repeatedly and gotten good service. First, there is no price list posted. Second, they discriminate against women by charging more than 2X the price for the same piece of clothing. Third, not only were my clothes not ready (a day after I was originally told they would be) but I they still charged me despite not pressing a shirt. As for prices, overpriced is an understatement, at least for women's items. I dropped off 4 shirts for my boyfriend, a silk blouse, an oxford, and a pair of linen slacks. His shirts were 2.20 a piece, very reasonable. Mine, 5.50. When I questioned the man at the counter why my oxford (the exact same type of Ralph Lauren oxford's that my boyfriend had dropped off) was more expensive, he told me "it's women's priced". Same material, same brand, just gender. If anyone's should be more expensive it should be then men's, there is more fabric! I had alterations done to my linen pants, which were reasonably priced. However, Jin's charged me $12 for steaming them! Additionally, in the middle of "handling" my order. In other words, when they couldn't find my order, didn't have it ready... The man took another customer! I get that it is the morning rush - but I had to get to work too! When I finally got my clothing, the man refused to remove the price of the shirt that hadn't been pressed because it wasn't ready. I get that it was silk and so 5.50 may have been appropriate... but it wasn't ready when I got there (a day later than my receipt guaranteed!). The customer service was awful. There is a seriously limited understanding of English - which normally I wouldn't have a problem with, but attempting to explain that I wanted pants hemmed 2 1/4 inches and asking to have a seam on a sleeve fixed posed serious language problem. Clearly, the owner has been in that location for quite some time - being able to communicate those things shouldn't be too much to ask. Overall, I would never, ever recommend this cleaner. Awful customer service, unapologetic, and a complete price rip-off. If you want great service, go to Court Cleaners in Rosslyn. It's out of the way, but when I lived out there, I would regularly drop things off. They were always ready on time, sweet to deal with, and did great alterations. Let me start by saying I can't stand almost every person and business I walk by in this neighborhood. Jin's is a stand out. Efficient, friendly, and they remember you. I am a regular dry cleaning customer here, and occasionally bring in dress clothes for tailoring, including suits. They have done great work each time. Only once in my three years of going here, a dress shirt was separated from the rest. Jin's bent over backwards to find the shirt and left messages on my phone to let me know it had been located. I do NOT recommend this place; the real tragedy here is how often I've encountered bad service and keep going back, but I think I've learned my lesson once and for all. Here are just some of the frustrations I've had here: 1) As the other reviewers have noted, it's expensive. $14 for a dress is steep if you ask me. 2) They've LOST aspects of my garment before (ie, an inner slip on a dress) even when I've specifically pointed it out beforehand in "make sure this doesn't get separated from the dress" kind of way. Can't tell you how annoying it was to discover that it was missing as i was packing for a trip, on which the dress was needed for a job interview. I ran down the street and pointed out, and it took him 15 minutes to find in the back. 3) I've gone to pick up something that I took in specifically because of 2 stains (which I pointed out, and he taped), only to see upon careful inspection that the stains were STILL THERE. I've pointed them out and he'll see "oh, come back tomorrow?" ( as in, "oh, was this DIRTY? Is that why you asked me to CLEAN IT??") 3) I took in a garmet with a couple of small holes in the sleeve to get fixed. When I picked it up I noted that one was fixed and assumed the other was as well-- when I went to put it on a few weeks later I realized the second hole had NOT been fixed. 4) Once I went to pick up some stuff in the middle of the afternoon and they were nowhere to be found. The door to the shop was open, but there was nobody inside. I waited for FIFTEEN minutes and eventually had to go home without my clothes. Enough is enough, Please don't waste your time or money here!! I thinking I'm going to start using U street cleaners on U between 16th and 15th-- they can't be worse than this AND they are environmentally friendly! read more

The women here are very courteous and respectful. However, my last experience was not very good. I had three dresses cleaned, but I could tell they had only been pressed (OR they used a VERY weak cleaning product.) I proceeded to use a home-use dry cleaning sheet and was able to clean my dresses (and get rid of the odors) just fine. So, I'm back to searching for a good dry cleaner in the area! read more

I just joined yelp today, and with one purpose: to share my experience with Jin's. I've been a happy customer for 3 years, have spent thousands of dollars, and had a great relationship with the sweet lady who worked the front desk, I had gone there for so long. When they moved from the storefront on U street over to New Hampshire I noticed they had all new people working there but didn't give it a 2nd thought. My first pick-up from the new storefront included a white button-down from BR that I had worn once, and had been shrunk so badly I couldn't pull the arms to stretch past my elbows and there was about 4-5 inches between each side of the shirt when I tried to button it across my chest. Instead of offering to pay for the $60 shirt, they said there's no way they had shrunk it and that they would try to "stretch it with steam." I was embarrassed they were basically saying I was a liar and so I said okay and that I would come back next week to try it on for them. Over the course of that week, I went through the other items I picked up and noticed a sash was missing from a BCBG dress, so I called to ask them about it. They had it, but again made me feel like it was my fault for... leaving it? I finally came back to try on my "steamed" shirt -- it didn't fit, again, and they seemed extraordinarily put-out to reimburse me for it. In fact, the first time I picked up the shirt they lied and told me a manager wasn't there, and when she accidentally came up to the front desk, she had to deal with me because I had found her. The second time, they said they wouldn't reimburse me for the white shirt again, but that they wouldn't make me pay for the dry-cleaning I was picking up that day. They also demanded that they keep the shirt they shrunk. The whole time somehow I was made to feel bad, like I had caused this. Fast forward a few more hours, I get home and go through all my dry-cleaning and realize I'm short two skirts. I go back this morning, and they blame me for not going through my closet closely enough, and as I write this today, they still deny that they have 1 remaining skirt of mine -- I did get one of the two of them back, but only because I told her I would not leave until they at least found one of them. The poor lady doing the alterations backed me up on remembering that I had dropped off skirts, because the manager was basically like -- ehh, we'll call you if we find anything, to which I finally said, hell no. The worst part of all of this, of losing a shirt, part of a dress, and 2 skirts, is that they never once apologized, and made me feel crazy and embarrassed and like this was my fault. I love supporting local business, and having relationships with the people on your street, but this was an unnecessarily poor representation of the services available on the U street corridor. I live in the neighborhood and have been going to Jin's for more than 3 years. I've never had a problem with the quality of the dry cleaning -- never had anything shrunk or lost. And the customer service is *great.* I take in a re-useable garment bag, so I can avoid using plastic bags. It was a challenge at first to communicate that I wanted the shop to use the re-usable bag instead of plastic -- some of the folks who own/work in the shop struggle a little with English. But now they've got the routine down. It's a departure from their normal procedure, and I'm sure it's a hassle for them, but they're always very nice about it. I'll be going to Jin's for as long as I live in the neighborhood. read more

Horrible, just horrible. I brought in a zipper up jacket that I literally paid $24.99 for at Target. The zipper didn't work anymore. (I guess that's what I get for buying a cheap light weight jacket). Anyway, I went into Jin's and asked how much it would cost to repair the zipper. I was told $8.00 I figured spending $8.00 to get the zipper repaired was better for both the environment and my wallet, so I left the jacket. I should point out that this jacket was grey with a white zipper. I'll take the blame for not reading the claim ticket, but that's all. When I went to pick up the jacket, much to my dismay, the cost was $18.00 not $8.00 (plus of course tax). To make matters worse, they replaced the zipper with a black zipper not a white one. It stands out against the light gray jacket and doesn't match the white stripe down the sleeve. I was told I must have heard wrong about the price and that the jacket had a black zipper not a white one when I brought it in which is a complete lie. I will never use Jin's again. I have to say that I was disappointed by my service at Jin's. It's also somewhat misleading that there are two Yelp categories for the dry cleaner/alterations shop -- one on New Hampshire and one on U Street as they are really the same connected shop (I think!). If they are not physically connected I am sure that they are owned by the same people (same phone # and name). I am posting in both for fear that people might get sucked in by the higher reviews of the New Hampshire location. That's the mistake I made... damn. Oh, and 2 stars b/c the clothes were cleaned well and I did receive a refund. Not worht Anyway, now that logistics are out of the way - I've been disappointed with two experiences I've had (one at the NH location and one at the U Street location - just for good measure I suppose). My first was a tailoring experience. I brought in a short jacket (part of a dress suit) to be taken in. The jacket was ridiculously cheap (thank you Filenes, heart heart) but was a bit blousy so wanted to see what it would cost to get the thing tailored. I dropped in and explained the situation. The woman at the counter and the gentleman there were very nice (at first) and had my try on the jacket. I asked how much taking in the jacket would be - repeatedly - with not a response. Eventually the man had me take off the jacket and was pinning the coat in the back (where he would sew). I continued to ask how much the tailoring would be. Silence. The back of the jacket had been completely pinned at this point. I asked for a third time, and finally they told me it would be approximately $50. When I explained that this would be twice as much as I paid for the jacket (more actually, but um, I didn't want to show all my cheapy bargain shopping cards) the woman curtly said "alterations can be more than the clothes cost" and started hastily pulling the pins from the jacket. Whoa. This whole situation could have been avoided if I had been told how much the "taking in" would have been at the get-go. This is a very routine procedure for a tailor and others I have encountered have given me the price up-front. Over all, not a good experience. I don't understand why it's so ridiculous to ask the price of something before committing to purchasing a service -- would you order a meal only to be quoted on the price after it's served to your table? Hells no. So why is this industry so different? I realize that for big projects (e.g. making a dress or severe extreme labor intensive tailoring) one would need to examine the garment before quoting a price. This was clearly not the situation and it made for a really uncomfortable experience (especially in front of other customers on a busy Saturday). Ok, switch to a few months later as I hurriedly rushed down U St. to get to the S2 and pack myself on it in order to get to work (thanks Metro!). I dropped off a few pieces of long needed dry cleaning at Jin's on U (not remembering/figuring out that this was the name of the same outfit I had the strange tailoring experience with). I asked for a price list -- which of course they don't have. No one does. Why would I want to know what you are charging before I drop my gear off? Silly, silly me. I realized the 2 Jins were one as I waited at the bus stop . . . and waited. . . and I looked behind me to see the very same name on the shop on NH. Uh oh. Anyway, I came back the following week to get my clothes (4 day turn around . . . not bad since I was in no rush). The woman had my clothes all cleaned and ready to go! Fabulous! The she proceeded to charge me another $8 on top of what I owed (the already pricey amount on the Dry Cleaning slip). I realized this as the credit card charge was going through. As it turns out they charged me to "repair" a 2 inch seam pull (that didn't exist when I dropped the garment off). No one called me before this was done nor notified me it had been done when I came in. I had no previous relationship with the cleaner's okaying them to make repairs. And $8?? That's ridiculous to sew a seam pull of 2 inches! Eventually the manager was called (after I tried to communicate the situation to the clerk at the desk - she was very helpful I just don't know if she understood exactly what I was saying). I did get a refund eventually -- after much more haggling while another customer was waiting behind me (sorry, dude). I think that this is a common practice in the DC dry cleaning industry (as I've read from prior posts for many places) to make unauthorized "repairs" to garments and then try to sneak the charge in without the customer noticing. This is great if you have a pre-existing relationship w/ the cleaner and want this done - but not so much if you don't. Since dry cleaning is already INSANELY over-priced this practice irks me that much more. Be forewarned, and check your receipt!! I'll be continuing my search for a good dry cleaner in DC... and Santa Claus. 2 stars b/c clothes were cleaned well/rec'd refund. read more

Prices seem to be in line with other dry cleaners in the area (i.e., a little more than you'd like them to be) but all of my clothes have come back in pristine condition. Hours are standard for small dry cleaning shops and, for me, the location can't be beat. What pushes this shop above the others? They are over-priced. BUT, my biggest concern is that they are NEVER there at 7am when they're supposed to open. It's happened many times and the owner always comes in around 7:15/7:20am saying she hit traffic. Bottom line: she clearly doesn't value her customers or care enough to find a way to open the store on time. I love Jin's! I have been going there for several years, and unlike many of the reviewers have gotten fantastic service. The couple who seem to run the business are very nice , and have gotten me clothing with a quick turn around (same day, or day after). The prices are on par with other cleaners in the area. It seems like some of the reviewers are obsessed with there being no price list or "surprise" prices but you actually get a reciept before anything gets cleaned, and if you think its high you can just ask about the prices and make a decision on whether its really worth to be lazy and get a cotton shirt dry-cleaned (most people-over dry clean clothing that should be wet-washed on delicates and air dried) They always do an excellent job with the cleanings and have gotten really tough stains out of garments I thought were beyond saving. In fact, at times when they discover an issue they let me know ahead of time that stain may or may not come out or alerted me to a risk in damaging the garment before cleaning or any extra costs. The tailor there has also done great work on everything from hemming jeans to taking in dresses and jackets. They explain how much the price for the tailoring will be as he is inspecting it- which of course is garment specific because fabrics, seam placement, zippers, buttons, and linings are not all the same. Yes, tailoring sometimes costs more than a bargain purchase but that is something to consider when deciding if something is really a "bargain". The tailoring has always turned out exactly as I thought it would be, and the prices were explained up front so I could decide if it was worth it- especially if the cost is high because of a strange seam or zipper. As for "surprise" services, I have also never experienced this- if a hem has been coming apart when I drop off the item they either alert me to it and ask if I want it fixed, or leave it as is, and if I get an item tailored they ask if I want it cleaned or pressed before charging me for it. All in all, I am extremely satisfied every time I go there, and wanted to give Jin's a positive review because I was so shocked to see such poor ones on here! read more

I have been going to Jin's for years. The staff have always been kind and helpful, letting me know which stains they know won't come out before I attempt it. They have returned belongings I have left in my pockets, and never argue if I request something to be cleaned a day earlier than they say it will be ready. It's a shame that customers have lost occasional items at Jin's, but I must say that as a customer for the past 8 years, they are courteous, respectful, kind, and do a GREAT job on my shirts and pants.
