Jin's Mi-Fen in Ajax recently celebrated their first anniversary so I had to drop in to congratulate them and, of course, enjoy some of their delicious Hunan style noodle soup. I had their Rou-Si Pork noodle soup, one of my favourites. It was delicious, with rich flavour. It hit the right spots and satisfied my craving. While dining, the couple at the next table struck up a conversation with me and offered to share their dessert. Yes! I couldn't resist the Fried Banana, one of my favourites. Thank you! Jin's Mi-Fen has opened a new location in Ajax as the second franchise outside of its popular Markham location. They're on UberEats for delivery and there is a store pickup option too. Jin's Mi-Fen hails from Hunan's Changde City in the northwest part of Hunan Province in China. The restaurant itself has a nice bright interior with plenty of seating. I was seated quickly and given the opportunity to ask the server if you have any questions about ingredients. The server recommended the most popular item on the menu which was the Signature Spicy Beef Double Up, 招牌双拼牛肉粉 , where it's a combination of 2 different kinds of beef, cooked 2 ways. M2. combined together with M3 on the menu. M2. 酱香牛肉粉 JIANGXIANG BEEF LOIN (STRIPLOIN) M3. 津市麻辣牛肉粉 - MALA SPICY BEEF JERKY (EYE ROUND) The server forgot to mention that this dish is recommended with soup on the side. She mentioned that the Signature Spicy Beef Double Up is spicy and said that, even when customers opt for a mild spice level, it does contain spices. She recommended to request no spice if you're unsure of spice preferences. Good advice. I like it hot and spicy, and in the end the cautious approach failed to deliver the requisite heat. I ordered 2 different soups using the table's QR Code sticker. M5. 番茄牛腩粉 - TOMATO BRAISED BEEF BRISKET M1. 招牌双拼牛肉粉 - SIGNATURE DOUBLE BEEF You get to choose the noodles and spice level ahead of time. For being the most popular MUST TRY choice among customers the Signature Spicy Beef Double Up wasn't my most popular choice. The broth was watery, salty and lacked spice. On the bright side, springy soft noodles and pickled vegetables were the MVPs, with the pickled vegetables adding a nice sour and crunchy texture. The Original beef brisket noodle tomato soup was a favourite! The sweet-tangy flavour of the tomato went well with the tender soft and chewy beef brisket. This one's a winner! 老配方牛骨牛肉真實熬湯 . They make their soup in house from an old-fashioned 400-year-old recipe which uses real beef bones, no MSG, and 24 herbs. When you are ready to pay the bill, there are a few steps to walk down to get to the bar area. I had a nice chat with the really friendly people who will cash you out. I heard they opened a location in Ajax and we were in the neighbourhood and decided to check it out. The parking lot situation was pretty straightforward. They have their own private lot, but they share it with a coin laundry and it looks a little rundown. As you enter the restaurant, there were already a few diners eating, but mostly it was pretty empty. Service was pretty efficient. You didn't really need to interact with any of the servers as they have QR code menus at every table and you would just order through your phone, even as far as submitting through your phone and it would go straight to the kitchen. Their menu is pretty limited. They're known for their rice noodles, but for a lot of the soup noodle dishes you had the choice between a wheat noodle, a flat noodle, which they told us was sold out, and then their original rice noodle. The food came pretty fast. We also ordered their take on popcorn chicken, but they called them chicken bites. They were more so like western chicken nuggets, but smaller and didn't have that like Taiwanese popcorn chicken taste, which they never technically advertised but at most Asian places when they sell Chicken bites/popcorn chicken I just automatically referred to those familiar flavour profiles. The chicken bites came with a mayo based dipping sauce. It came out hot and fresh. They were kind of just OK and then our noodle soup dishes came out. I ordered the original and my partner ordered a spicy version. I did decide to choose less salt, which was an option that I do appreciate, however the braised beef in my noodle dish was really tough and the brisket in my partner's noodle dish was extremely dry so we left kind of unsatisfied with the meal. I also just feel like if you're not a fan of that mala spice then you might not like any of the dishes here because all their soup bases has that northern China peppercorn soup base. I don't think I'll be coming back even though they've given me a customer stamp card. I prefer my braised beef soup noodles with bouncy hand pulled noodles and the braised beef tender. read more

I have been dying to try out this joint ever since it opened on a sleepy stretch of Harwood where there are surprisingly abundant choices of oddly placed restaurants. I finally got to try it out with my husband for a weekday lunch and it was amazing! The restaurant is clean and spacious. The servers are efficient and knowledgeable. We ordered 2 bowls of noodles and a side of demon eggs and the food came out super quickly. We loved that the soup was served piping hot! The beef in the double beef Signature could have been a bit more tender but other than that, the flavours were complex yet well balanced with a decent kick from the chilies to compliment the soup. We loved the authenticity of these noodle soups as Asian specialty restaurants are still a rarity in Durham region. The demon egg was also delicious with umami packed century egg chunks sitting atop a decent mound of silky tofu, bathed in lip smacking black vinaigrette. We'll be ordering this again! Our first experience was so great, I had to come back with friends and tried out the vegetarian oyster mushroom mi fen which was also great. I certainly hope JMF will stay around for years to come as it is such a welcomed addition to the Durham food scene! read more

So happy to have an authentic Chinese noodle place in Durham! Most of the mains are beef centric, but as I'm allergic to beef, there were pork and mushroom bowls to choose from. The noodles was a good tender chewiness, and the broth was delicious! Aside from the noods, the sides were also quite delicious, my favourite being the Demon (century) Egg on Tofu and Pork Belly Croissant Sandwich! We were so impressed, we had my inlaws join us from North York on our next visit. They added rice options (with the same toppings) and a delicious red bean and rice spring roll. It was so good, I didn't want to share!! The parking lot is quite generous for the number of shops in the small plaza. Inside the restaurant is spacious, and tables ranging from 2 seats to 6, and looks easy to rearrange for larger parties. Service was prompt and friendly, and the food comes out quick! Met up with my cousin and her family for Thanksgiving lunch...4 adults and 3 kids. They were open from 11:30am to 8pm. Friendly and courteous staff, good food and ambience. We ordered: Beef shank and tripe in chili sauce Refreshing smashed cucumber Demon egg tofu House special edamame Signature beef double up Mala spicy beef jerky Hongshao braised beef x 3 (extra beef w/ 1 order) (Extra noodle in a couple of the above) Zhajiang Minced Pork Poutine Food came promptly and everything was tasty and great value...especially when they offer extra noodle and soup at no extra cost! I liked the online ordering system which allowed us to customize our noodle dishes with degree of spiciness and toppings etc...perhaps a printout of order placed at the table will help ensure accuracy of order etc...we had a minor mix up, which the server advised of the error and correction later on, which we appreciated. With 3 out of 4 of us born and bred in Hong Kong, having had dishes from multiple regions in China, we were pleased to find authentic Chinese noodle in Durham! Though our dining experience could have been nicer, if it wasn't for a table of Chinese patrons with loud gaming on a mobile phone in addition to extra loud conversations...our server approached them to turn down the volume on the gaming after our request...we would be inclined to return again to either dine-in or take out. read more
