During that visit, they also repaired one of my tires without clearly asking me beforehand. About a month later, I started hearing a strange noise coming from my right rear tire. After checking it, we discovered that there was a metal object loose inside the tire. I brought the car back to this shop because they were the ones who had previously worked on that tire. What upset me the most was their response. Instead of seriously considering whether the object could have been left inside during the previous tire repair, they told us that we must have put the metal object inside the tire ourselves. Why would a customer intentionally put a metal object inside their own tire? They removed the object, but still charged us another $30. I have the receipt and photos of the metal object that was removed from the tire. I cannot personally prove exactly when or how the object ended up inside the tire, but I can say exactly what happened: this shop worked on that same tire about a month earlier, the tire later developed a noticeable noise, a metal object was found loose inside it, and when we returned, the shop denied responsibility and accused us of putting it there ourselves. I was extremely disappointed with both the way this situation was handled and the accusation toward us. Based on my experience, I would not return.

At my usual place, if the car doesn't pass, the fee covers retesting within 30 days. I assumed most smog shops worked similarly, but that was my assumption. Here, the $40 was just for running it through the machine, and when I come back it will be full price for the actual smog test. What confused me was that the manager later mentioned that if I had told them about the battery, they could've checked the readiness monitors in about a minute with a different device. That part would've been helpful to know upfront. It seems like offering that quick pre-check automatically could save customers time and money, especially since battery replacements are common. I paid the $40. That's on me for not asking more questions beforehand. But for anyone going in for a smog check, especially if you recently disconnected your battery, I'd recommend asking them to check your readiness monitors first before running the full test. They were fast and polite. I just think clearer communication about pricing and the quick pre-check option would make the experience much better for both the customer and the business. I understand every business runs differently, but this pricing structure just doesn't work for me long term, so I'll be returning to the shop I normally use.
