9/3 I saw JJ Fish & Chicken in passing and thought, I'd like to try this place. I reached my destination and my companions said that they wanted to eat and they recommended JJ Fish & Chicken. I'm yes, while fist pumps in the air. I think the yelp gods are with me on this trip, and everything is syncing. After viewing the menu, I became very indecisive on what to order. I saw so many items that I haven't eaten in decades. I am talking about 2003 and beyond. I saw gizzards and almost lost consciousness. My selection was fried whiting fish with fried oysters accompanied by French fries and bread to make a sandwich. A side order of hush puppies too. In my world, you can't have sea food with the hush puppies. That's a no no! I am thinking of the playful term that I first heard in Ga, that term is big back and I caught big back vibes while ordering this meal. The whiting was so good, crispy and not greasy. 5/5 The oysters were soft and very tasty, no burn. 5/5 The French fries were flexible, soft, not crunchy, and not greasy. 5/5 Banana pudding was properly created 5/5 So entering inside JJ Fish & Chicken you will see the trend is take out, however they do offer dine-in but most patrons on the day I visited used the dining area for the waiting area. I can't see any locals using this spot for a date, maybe a lunch gathering for those that want to chat and kill time. The customer service was a bit rushed and pressed. I am guessing that is because a lot of people did as we did, called ahead for the order and when you get there you will find that customer service is a wee bit confused. Navigating phone orders and ordering in house can contribute to the confusion and slow the process of picking up an order. The reason I say this is because we ordered and when we arrived, we had to give our entire order because the number that they gave for confirmation was confusing due to the verification process. I don't know how that happened, but it did. The question now is, will I return. There are a few contributing factors that greatly influence my decision. 1- I am from out of town. 2- When I come to town again, I won't be going to that side of town. 3- It is fried food and I don't make it a habit to consume friend food. So, the next time I may have fried food may be 6 months or longer. While it is evident that I will not be returning, I do give my stamp of approval that JJ Fish & Chicken has good food with good taste, and they do give a generous amount to fill you to the point of being stuffed. I ate some and saved some. It was entirely too much so I do suggest sharing one order, it is more than enough. My companion also ate some and saved some, so it was not just me. But that doesn't mean the food isn't worth it -- if you just want to chill, relax, or grab something flavorful outside of your normal routine, this is the kind of place to try. The restaurant itself is small and was packed when I came in, so I chose to order my food to-go. Since it was my first visit, one of the associates was very helpful and walked me through the menu to find something that suited me. I ended up ordering the wing and tender combo, the tilapia and wing combo, lemonade, and two desserts -- the banana pudding and the key lime red velvet cake. Now, I'll say this upfront: skip the desserts. They were not good, and I later learned they aren't made in-house -- they're outsourced from another company. If you've got a sweet tooth, you'll want to grab dessert elsewhere. The food itself, though, was impressive. The wings and fish were crispy, flavorful, and satisfying without being overly greasy. It gave me that comforting "home-cooked" feel without the effort of actually cooking. The lemonade was also really good -- even though it didn't taste freshly squeezed, it had a nice flavor and you can even choose different add-in flavors depending on what you're in the mood for. IMO, it was just okay. I got a daily special which consisted of 2 pieces of fish, 10 shrimp, 2 whole chicken wings w/fries. The fries were soft and I felt like I got the broken bits from the bottom of the bag. Let me just say that I enjoyed the shrimp out of everything. The wings were a bit small but fried nicely, the fish was meh...This was my first time at this location and I can tell the difference from other locations. I will say that the service was on point. While waiting there was a slight build up of customers at times but they were getting folks orders filled and out the door. I'd have to think really hard if it's worth returning. read more

We usually order the whole fried catfish, shrimp, catfish filets, wings, fries, and coleslaw. I love the seasoning that's sprinkled on the food after it's cooked. I'll be 100% honest and say I was NOT expecting to find food in Lithonia late night, imagine my surprise when Yelp said JJs was open. Now I've been to a lot of JJs....usually University & Pryor and THIS location has them all beat. It's super organized and they give you a buzzer so you can sit in your car until your food is ready versus standing inside (with limited seating) waiting for your number to be called and I appreciate that. I kept it simple wings and catfish combo and I didn't have to ask for any ketchup.or hot sauce because they put it in the bag with napkins and utensils automatically. I give them a 4 today wings were larger and was seasoned to perfection (light seasoning) it's a hit or miss but they r pretty much consistent. I only get chicken. Great fish and chicken. It's as if they have frying things down to a science. If I'm in the mood for fried food with the perfect amount of down south crispiness, this is the best place to be. Their fries are also crispy. There is a bit of a crunch to them. This is something to consider because not everyone likes their fries crispy like I do. And I CANNOT forget to mention the seasoning. Word on the street is that they secretly added a bit of narcotics to their seasoning to keep you coming back. Please understand that is only a joke shared by the community this restaurant serves. This location is really bad from the exterior. Trash and Used masks littered the parking lot. But... Go inside it was cleaner. I give this place two stars only because two of my relatives enjoyed their meal. The rest of us damn near went in to cardiac arrest after seeing the amount of salt (disguised as "special seasoning") powdering the food. We thought it was flour at first. I visited the restaurant because of all the hype I've heard about it but it was so underwhelming. I got the wings and chicken gizzards with the special seasoning and I had to add my own seasonings. So I normally have lots to say about restaurants, hotels, or shops I visit and here's the litmus test I use when I'm grading: *If the service is absolutely horrible (no matter the level) I'm giving it one star, solely because I know ANYBODY who goes there is going to have a horrible time. ** If the service is good and people are friendly, I enjoy it and keep it moving because they didn't make my experience over the top. *** If the server, manager, associate goes out of their way to explain, share info such as name, specials, discounts, add-ons...I come here because EVERYBODY should experience the goodness I'm experiencing. JJ Fish ( pretty much no matter which location you go to) is going to be good. I thought my first time out it was just on a good night but even up to 5 minutes before closing the staff was courteous, helpful, and made sure I had everything I ordered before I left. Now, the one caveat to it is, the locations are usually in the less fancy areas of town. Not totally bad but, it'll have you raise your awareness and still the food is freaking amazing. Add to that the insanely sweet colorful drink options, the huge cooler full of all kinds of cake and that secret seasoning everybody covers their food with upon pick up and you will put yourself into a delicious coma. I've had the perch, the whiting, AND the catfish nuggets and none of it dissappoints. The coleslaw is a bit under seasoned but the fish makes up for it. I visited this location today, ( was my 2nd time going there), 1st visit was fine, food was pretty good too..... Today, due to time restraints, I called my order in over the phone, the woman that answered and took the order had "MORE ATTITUTIDE" THAN THE LAW SHOULD ALLOW....... This "COW" Said "NO" When I asked her for the cup, at which point, I sorta of lost my patience with her!!! I said a few "choice words" to her, that I will not lower myself and repeat in this post, but in addition, I basically "schooled" her on her lack of etiquette, and the importance of being polite.. She still wasn't trying to hear me.... I guess another reason why I felt the need to write this review is because "We" have these businesses come into our communities, that, "Yes", we cater and support them, and then off they go back to their most often times, "Luxurious" communities!!!
