We worked with JL Tree Service for the removal of a HUGE (and sadly, dying) tulip poplar in our backyard. From the first time they came out to provide an estimate to the time they pulled away with the last of the tree trunk, they were professional and helpful. Though I didn't hire this particular company, their quote was more than double the cost (plus a 2% fuel surcharge) of the small fully licensed and insured company that I hired to successfully complete my project. Guess the lesson is to get multiple quotes, and ask friends and neighbors that may have had similar work done for recommendations. Certainly hope that for the amount this particular company quoted for my job that they're passing along good pay and benefits to the employees doing the hard labor. Bigger isn't always better, as greed can sometimes get in the way of a fair deal. read more

They were very prompt to come out and examine our dying oak, had an experienced arborist explain what was happening, and referred us to another tree service in the event we wanted to explore the very small chance that the tree could be saved with treatments. I had a contract with specific instructions about the pruning of my cherry tree. I do not like manicured trees so the word shape was deliberately not on the contract because I wanted to keep a natural look. Instead, the crew shaped my tree very aggressively based on their idea of beauty, not based on the contract language. I was distressed and Sean took full responsibility for the error. That is the test of a good company ... how they respond if the customer is disappointed with the work. JL had the least expensive estimate out of four companies (Absolute, Barlett, The Care of Trees) to remove a dying Elm tree from our backyard. Then, they quickly provided a second removal estimate (still the least expensive) just after Dominion agreed to cut down (but not remove) the tree because of its proximity to their utility pole. The arborist (Nick) was easy to work with. As a bonus, he spotted an outbreak of powdery mildew in some of our shrubs that we hadn't caught, which probably saved us some grief later. I accepted their proposal midday 7/10 and the tree was gone by mid-afternoon on 7/15. They were early, worked quickly, and left our yard and property in good shape. read more

The general manager called me, apologized for the miscommunication, gave me a discount that I did not ask for, and made things right. JL Tree Service came highly recommended and now I can see why. They showed up on time and got right to work. I had 5 trees that needed to come down. 3 of them were a Poplar tree that grew into 3 massive trunks. It took 2 days but they were able to quickly and safely bring down the tree. They cleaned up each day. They came and took away all of the tree trunks. The still need to come and grind the stumps but I know that they will do a great job with that as well. I'm sure he could have upsold a lot of services I didn't need (like at least one company I obtained a quote from) but recommended that I do minor trimming myself on two trees to save money and to call him back out 2 years from now for major trimming. When I called to schedule the appointment and asked for soonest availability, they were able to let me know when a certified arborist would already be in my neighborhood and managed to squeeze me in. When I had a question about the estimate, Nick the arborist happily returned to double check and clarified something I had missed. I received three quotes and JL's was the most in line with what I needed (no over-selling) and came in at lowest cost. JL's staff called to schedule the work the same day as I emailed my agreement and they accommodated my request for an afternoon appointment, no problem. Hector and his crew arrived and got to work, safely and expertly trimming the tree, avoiding my landscaping on even a narrow city lot. The guys cleaned up when they were done and gave me a thanks for the business. My work -- which was a small job in the scheme of tree services -- was treated as important as one that cost more than ten times as much. Some of the older reviews state that it took weeks for JL to come out to give a quote, for me this was not the case. I submitted the request online, they showed up the next day. They identified all the trees that need work. I was a little sticker shocked, since this was the first time I needed to prune/remove trees. After getting 3 more quotes, I realized JL's quote was right on the money and they didn't try to oversell me on something I didn't need. They only pointed out the trees that were actually dead and/or actually needed trimming for safety reasons. After I received one of the other companies quotes (2x higher for one specific tree pruning), I emailed JL back to confirm exactly how much they'd be pruning. The person who gave the quote called me back and explained what they'd be doing, to what size, and said if necessary they'd gladly append the contract to list those details. So on September 8 of this year my condo had these people come cut down a tree they showed some time around 4 and started work. I who just got my car cleaned came out of my building to get my food to look over and see them cutting down the tree. So I walked up because I felt there crew was not taking proper care to make sure nothing hit the cars and boy was I right. First hit peace of wood on the roof of my car that was not there when I parked it because I took it though a car wash. Then walk on the passages side and find a stick so I start looking and I find where this stick stuck my car. I told the guy and started taking pictures he started going off in Spanish to the other guys. As I star in my car watching these yahoos work I watched them fire off the chipper and stuff bounce off the side of there truck and hit my car. I called jltree and was met with a nice woman sent pics and then it went down hill. There claims manger called asked I go get a quote and send it to him which I did because I wanted my car fixed. He got the quote asked me to go though my insurance which is fine but I called my insurance and they need there insurance company information because if there crew fault my car is damaged and that is where the radio silance started. I have emailed and asked and have gotten nothing back from them. So word of advice you see them hide things that you work hard for and care about because if it's close to them going home they don't care!, ( in response to the owner comment I get the dust but what I don't get is the stick hitting my car doing damage will call in the morning to get this started as this is first time I am getting any where in over a month. Further more I see tree trucks when near car have the shoot of the chipper almost into the back of the truck or a net on the side where the cars or homes are.) this is about damage not dust! Damage! Last year I had JL come remove a holly and a pear. I also asked them to remove any dead limbs on the huge cherry tree I had in my backyard because a few branches fell off during a heavy storm. This year that cherry is only growing leaves on half the tree. I asked them to come by and take a look to find out what is happening. They sent John who then wrote a proposal to remove it ($1350 to cut and $250 to grind the stump). So I spent $350 for the initial removal of dead limbs the year prior and now I have to shell out $1600 to remove the tree that is in decline... after they touched it. I called to ask how we can help resolve this issue and they take no responsibility. I understand things happen, but if my tree was in horrible condition before I wouldn't be feeling cheated right now. But, on the contrary, it perfectly fine saved a few dead branches that were up high. John said a lot of cherry trees are getting bacteria. John also stated that they don't use spikes, their chain saws get so hot they sterilize cuts, and they sanitize all their equipment. I used JL based on their reviews but regret it. I will echo the other low reviews on the fact that they do not respond or follow up calls in a timely manner (1-2 weeks). Based on what John says if you have a cherry do not let them get near it. Because apparently, it will inevitably succumb to bacteria that is plaguing the Northern Virginia area. I should have read the reviews more carefully. They seem to excel at taking down already dead trees. It would have been nice if they took some responsibility and perhaps gave a rebate or discount for taking down the tree that they subsequently murdered. read more

The field team were on time and efficient with their efforts. The job was executed as discussed, and my yard is cleaner than when they started! The team was very courteous. What I probably appreciated the most that the team wore their PPE throughout the job (and humidity) - a company that fosters an appreciation for the safety and well-being of their people. On Monday, I called JL along with 3-4 other services to schedule an estimate. I left contact details and had a standard experience. On Tuesday, I called back because, of the tree services, JL was the only one that had not responded yet. I spoke with someone who confirmed they had received our details, but that it would be 1-2 weeks just to hear back about scheduling an estimate. How am I supposed to be waiting by the phone for 2 weeks just to schedule the first visit? Especially if we need to be onsite to show the trees. I'm sorry to see this standard with JL when there are other highly recommended competitors (via Yelp, Angies List, etc) that do let me schedule ahead. I'm even ok with scheduling 2-3 weeks out. read more

Updating my prior review to say that the owner called me immediately after my review was posted to follow up which was very appreciated. The company came back out and agreed to monitor the limb for 12 months from the service date and cut if they felt it died. Their arborist reiterated he didn't feel it posed a safety threat. I still have some hesitation about the limb with no bark but appreciate the second look and professional option. I think my only suggestion if you use this company would be to make sure the estimate is written explicitly as to the specific service you want done and/or the specific limbs you want removed so that there is no room for question. read more

Based on the work that JL Tree did removing one large hardwood tree (over 200') and two smaller evergreens (30'), I would recommend them. I'm pleased with John's responsiveness on the quote, and especially with the work done by Hector and his crew. They had a tough job, but they handled it well and impressed me with the job preparation, execution, and cleanup. This was no easy job. We had a 200' maple in the back of our property that had to be cut by a climber, then attached to a crane to be lifted and swung over a house, and then lowered in a pretty small opening among some trees into an awaiting wood chipper in the driveway. Given the tight space of this job, I appreciate that the crane operator (didn't catch his name) and the rest of the crew took care when setting up the footing and that each piece of the tree (each was a medium-sized tree) was handled well. The work was steady and done carefully. When the job was done, they rake and cleaned up the area well. read more

I have contacted JL Tree service on two separate occasions. Customer service and follow up phone calls were poor. To receive a quote for the first work to be done I had to call their office no less than four times. After several weeks, the crew came and removed the trees and limbs but was not able to remove stumps that same day for an unspecified reason. After, it took approximately 4-5 weeks and several follow up phone calls for a second crew to return to remove the stumps. As if the waiting was not problematic enough, the stump crew came to my property without prior notification and removed the stumps while I was at work. Since I was not able to inspect the work, there is still an unground stump on my property. Because of other reviews on this site, I decided to give this company another try when two large tree limbs cracked and were hanging precariously over my property and close to my neighbor's fence. After calling and explaining my request, the receptionist told me an arborist would be in touch. A full week later I received a phone call from an arborist confirming a day to provide a quote. The morning the arborist came, one of the two limbs had fallen, causing damage to my neighbor's fence. Since I was not willing to pay this company for the wood to be hauled (the Town of Vienna provides this service), I replied to the arborist to seek a revised quote for removal of the second limb. That e-mail was sent over a week ago and I have not yet received a response. If you figure out how to get this company to respond in a timely manner then it may be worth considering, otherwise I would suggest shopping around. The only positive thing from my experience was the pruning crew. They worked quickly and efficiently and were very friendly. read more

So, of course unplanned expenses add up when you move into a new place. Like your neighbor's rotting maple tree falling on your oak tree and then both trees hitting a third tree and then 48 feet of your fence. Add the fact that a large limb had broken but was balanced atop another tree creating a very hazardous work zone and endangering our fence/property again! Enter JL tree service. I called 5 tree services with mixed results; one even charged $65 for an estimate! JL tree did not charge for an estimate. Their estimate was very fair. Not only did I get a same day estimate (via internet request too); they cleared their schedule to provide emergency service the next day after we signed a contract. Good thing too because a little bit of wind and there would have been more debris falling to the ground. They also provided very fair add on pricing for a small job trimming branches from a cedar tree touching our roof. The work was done well. Upon request, I even got to keep some of the single chipped debris/leaves for use as large mulch. read more

Their estimate went to my junk inbox, so I missed it at first and called them. They were very nice and emailed it to me again anyway. Their rate was much lower than the other two Tree service companies I contacted. I have this giant oak tree that had some broken branches. I asked them to take care of the broken branches and to trim the tree as they saw fit. They came out and trimmed the tree nicely and took care of the broken branches. I didn't deal with them personally, because I was at work. The clean up afterward didn't leave any branches on the ground. Their online payment service was very convenient. I had a dead tree in my front yard and needed someone to remove it. I called several tree service companies including big and small ones. JL Tree service quoted $750 for tree removal and $250 for stump grinding, which is the best overall price. And they are willing to match a competitor's $200 stump grinding price to have a $950 total price. I sent them the signed approval on Sat and they came the next Wed (originally scheduled for Tue but it rained) to remove the tree and did the stump grinding on Thu. The job was done well and I was happy about the results. Two minor complaints: (1) it took them more than a week to give a quote, I had to call them several times before they gave me the quote. I almost signed a contract with another company if I hadn't read good reviews here. (2) after they did stump grinding, it took them another week to haul the mulch, again I had to call them again so that they can get it done. Although those 2 minor issues, their customer service is pretty good. The representatives who answered the call are very nice and they also replied email very promptly. I would recommend them for tree services and would use them again. read more
