I thought I'd picked wisely but had a miserable experience from start to finish with the other company. Just lots of miscommunication and lack of attention to detail. Near the end of the project, the stain was uneven in a spot and they tried to fix it but kept making it worse and worse. Fed up, I went looking for someone else to fix the issue, which is when I found Carlos. He assured me that he could do a color match on the area where the first contractor had been making mistake after mistake. He also noted that the sanding job throughout was not very good and provided me a reasonable quote to do a buff and coat throughout the house. He wasn't pushy about it at all and would have just done the color match, but I was happy to have him do another coat of finish throughout to clean up what the first guys did. Carlos also noticed that the floor vents the first contractor gave me were an outdated style. I said I'd wanted the "flush" style vent covers but my old contractor said it was not possible. Carlos was able to give me new, flush-style vent covers for all of the rooms in my house. Carlos also noticed that there were some squeaks in the floor. I didn't even know this was a thing you could fix! He and his team were able to put very well-hidden screws into the floor to prevent squeaking. Incredible! Finally, there were some spots in the floor where the first guys did putty to fill in holes and the putty color stuck out like a sore thumb. Carlos did an incredible color match and I literally couldn't find these spots without getting on my hands and knees. While I wish I'd found Carlos a couple of months sooner, I am so glad that I know him now. He really saved me and I will 100% be hiring him for all future wood flooring projects!

This created a condensation trap in winter that eventually led to mold inside the wall cavity and peeling paint on the surface. The other bathroom--built at the same time--did not have this issue, which is what helped us figure out that this was not a house-wide moisture problem, but instead a wall-assembly oversight specific to that remodel. To be clear: I'm not questioning their friendliness or effort, but proper bathroom remodeling requires evaluating insulation, vapor control, and the condition of exterior walls during demo, especially when replacing drywall on an exterior-facing wall. That step didn't happen here, and it ultimately created a significant expense and inconvenience down the road. I've removed my initial positive review because, while the bathrooms looked nice on day one, this kind of behind-the-wall oversight matters. I hope the company takes this as constructive feedback for future projects. Customers should make sure that insulation, vapor strategy, and exterior-wall conditions are verified when remodeling a bathroom - especially one with drywall on an outside-facing wall.

None of the others were damaged, but so it goes. I did a search and found Handyman Flores. I called him, but the voicemail on his phone is not set up, so I was unable to leave a message. I used the Yelp communication tool to leave him a message and that made the process far more complicated than it needed to be, because Yelp sent the message to several other window-related companies. It was very aggravating and I won't use that again, because I'm having to respond to all sorts of random companies and people Yelp contacted on my "behalf". Only one of the 4 or 5 companies was local. The closest otherwise was San Rafael. The others were in Pittsburg and San Ramon. Talk about a blunt instrument, unhelpful and, in my case, counterproductive. Most helpful of those was Paula, of East County Glass & Window. If I lived closer, I would certainly use them. Her response was detailed and extremely useful. I finally did reach Handyman Flores, who said by text that he could replace the screen for $120. That seemed OK. I was quoted a range of prices and that was in the middle. He and a helper came over between 5:00 and 6:00 this evening. They replaced the screen and it looks great, as good as new. When I was writing the check I confirmed the amount and he said that it would be $150 because of the materials he had purchased. That was a surprise, but I paid it. He does a wide range of services, so he is indeed a handyman. It would be handier for his customers if his voice mailbox were set up.

Lupe came to our home in June (2024) and told us the railings would be completed in 3 weeks. We decided to do this project in the summer so there would not be an issue with rain damaging our front steps/landing before we could get them sealed and painted (once the railings were completed). Unfortunately, every time we spoke to Lupe, the project was 'on it's way to the powder coater' or other excuses. The railing was not completed until October, over 4 months from when he told us it would be done. Shortly after the final installation of the railings and just before we could get the painters in (which we had to push back many, many times), we experienced heavy rain which severely damaged our stairs, which now have to be replaced. Lupe is a really nice person, but not $4k in additional work nice. If you want a nice person but have zero levels of urgency with your project, then go for it. Otherwise, we don't recommend Castaneda Iron Works.

My feeling is that the brands here are limited. I looked up a brand of flooring they recommended and it was a lower end brand probably made in China. That may be just fine but I am also weary about off-gassing. Where the product is made and where the materials come from does matter to me. I'm currently looking at online venders where products come from Sweden that actually end up being similarly priced with very little off-gassing and is sustainable. I found some good contractors off Angi online and will be overseeing the project myself. While the quote given to me was reasonable (9500) for the first floor of my home, I would feel more comfortable having more choices in the material that I walk on and breath in everyday.
