Had a bad morning and wanted to treat myself to something good. I remembered this place was right around the corner so why not. Their website says "breakfast from 9-12pm", came in @11am and was told "breakfast was ending and the oxtail plate are dinner prices." Questionable but it's business I guess.. The generous amount of food for $27 tried to make up for it. Well actually, it was the oxtail that made up for it. Tender. Juicy with every bite. And literally had to catch it from falling off the bone. I finally got around to checking out Joan's & Sisters for the first time. I decided to stop by after work around 3pm. The place was pretty much empty, there was only one customer at the time. It was a friendly Belizean man who spoke highly of the food. It reassured me that the food I was about to order was going to be good. I ordered their Ox Tail plate, which was about $25. It's definitely not the cheapest plate, but for the amount of food they give, I would say it's worth it. The Ox Tail plate can definitely feed two people, in my opinion. The flavors were there and nothing was overpowering. The Ox Tails were juicy and tender. The potato salad was surprisingly good. The rice and beans together with the plantains is a must. Very clean on the inside and the lady at the front was in good spirits which made me happy Baby when I picked up these plates they were HEAVY! The portions are definitely generous. We specifically drove over for the Oxtail but I saw their Meat Pies and decided to get one for the road. Truly one of the best decisions I've made. The Oxtail is served with white rice and red beans, potato salad, and plantains. I'm pretty sure the to-go box weighed 5 lbs. The meat falls off the bone like tender stew meat. Freaking amazing! So here's the thing, some Belizean women that knows how to cook doesn't like to give others credit for their cooking. Something is always wrong with a a dish that wasn't prepared by themselves, this could of been better, or that wasn't good, or the most popular one I'm accustomed to is "Dat Nuh Nice"! As a greedy Belizean kid growing up, and now as an adult I've heard many opinions about this restaurant. Now let me tell you my thoughts on this place. I've had the food three different times now and I must say it was good. There's nothing subpar about anything on the menu but it isn't to die for either. I've had their rice and beans w an assortment of meats, I've had their meet pies, the fish, the bread pudding, and most of the Caribbean drinks. There were all average. This morning my sis and I tried the breakfast for the first time. We had the Belizean style refried beans, eggs, oxtails, and some fresh fried jacks. Let me tell you that I killed my plate and started stealing food from hers, the beans as well as the eggs tasted exactly like how it does back home, straight outta grigaDang. I mean I was full but I couldn't stop eating it. The oxtails were flavorless in our opinion so we spiced it up w the onion and vinegar sauce. Here's where the 3 stars came in, the lady wasn't welcoming at all, she never made eye contact with us and she seemed to be bothered that we were even in here to begin with. Not sure if that's the way to run a business, but whatever works for her. We were in there for 30 minutes total and within that time our food came out fresh and we managed to survive the awkwardness of the lady. This place is a must try, especially for breakfast.
