Abysmal customer service at the cutting counter. I approached the counter with a small end of bolt piece of vinyl and asked how much it would be and the employee responded, "if there's no price, it's not for sale" and discarded it in the go backs bin. No offer to check on price or assistance. A few minutes later, another customer approached the cutting counter and was told it was closed and to "come back tomorrow when the store opens at 8 am." I walked past the counter and the sign on the counter stated "Creativity is on a break and will be back in 30 minutes." It was about 5 pm and the store closes at 6 pm. Interesting. Moments later another customer approached the counter for service and the employee stated the counter was closed. She mentioned she was in the middle of a project and was short on yardage and asked if he could help her with a cutting and he replied, "if I help you, then I have to help another customer and I won't be able to get my work done." Wow. He turned away 3 customers. And doing paperwork is more important than helping paying customers. Turns out this employee is the Manager, Trey. read more

Bad Service at JoAnn is part of the past!!! I agree with most of the negatives reviews here in reference to this store, but it is time for me to do a nice review... It seems the store changed manager, but my last few times that I have been in the store, I noticed ALL NEW STAFF, who are very service oriented. I have been in the store twice this week for a project that I am working on. Every time that I visited the store, I was helped by a young lady named Esmeralda, at the cutting area. She is very friendly, welcoming and eager to help you. Other staff has been helpful during my visits. I am glad that it took the company to switch and get a manager that it seems it providing the training that employees deserve. When customers receive a low expected service, they tend to take it against the employee, not realizing that it is a management issue, not the employee. The employee did not receive the proper training to deal at the store... But also, they are quick to stop their day to write a bad review when something wrong goes... I wish that they take the same time to uplift that employee that made great experience... Esmeralda made my shopping experience pleasant! I will continue coming back thanks to her ! read more

Why is there no 1/2 star rating? I drove all the way down from Petaluma to the Corte Madera store yesterday. When I got there, there were 10 people in line at the register. The man at the cutting counter had at least another 10 waiting in line for cut yardage. He was the ONLY employee in the store, shouting to the customers in line at the register that he would be with them shortly. 15 or so minutes later, it seems both lines were done (maybe some people just chose to leave? I didn't pay attention) and I went back to the cutting counter to find a sign that said "Creativity is taking a break." There was in fact NO ONE at all at work in the store. I don't blame the guy, really, he seems to be working for a terrible company and of course needs a break. But he is cut from the same sour cloth as the other people I've encountered over the years. When he returned to the counter he basically took the sign and threw it to the side in a very irritated way and looked at me almost with contempt for needing help with yardage. When I asked if he knew where the premium quilting cotton was, he shrugged. A few minutes later I asked for the restroom key and he said he didn't know where it was. Bottom line: if you need anything here, ANYTHING, even to use the bathroom, you are out of luck! They should just close the store instead of leading customers into the Wild Wild West when they enter ready to spend money. read more

Just moved to Marin from SF and needed some last minute Halloween costume supplies. I was thrilled to find this place - fabric AND crafts, wow! You had me at fabrics and the crafts were the icing on the cake. I had a lovely experience here - yes it is a tad understaffed but the people who work there were super nice and patient with my endless questions and craft needs. Bonus, I met a guy trying to make a Patrick the Starfish costume from a pile of pink fabric and bunting literally hours before a Halloween party - that's bold. Props to you Patrick. I hope you pulled it off. One word of caution, do not go there after having an edible, you WILL come home with way too many craft projects that you will never finish. read more

We needed some art supplies to paint a canvas in my bedroom. Lo and behold, stumbled upon Joann. It was raining out on a weekday night and the parking lot was almost empty. But I walked in to this place and immediately felt like it hadn't been updated in over a decade. The lighting was poor, the shelves were old and the store itself was confusing to navigate. On top of all that, the isles were an absolute mess with products all over the floor and very little organization. They had what I needed though! And the people working were incredibly sweet. This store needs more attention from corporate, but overall would return. read more

First time at this Joann's store after work. Closer to my work in Marin. Concord store is closer to my residence in Benicia. This store is a bit smaller than Concord but has cleaner and more organized shelves. The clearance sections were a treasure trove for me. The store didn't have the specific paper craft products I saw in Concord. Greeted and helped by three workers, one worker was a bit impatient with my question. But it's ok, I'm unoffendable. read more

Joann fabrics in Corte Madera doesn't even deserve one star. I don't leave reviews often however have had terrible experiences with customer service at this store. I shopped here in late October before Halloween and an older woman was rude to me and treated me like i was an inconvenience for even looking at fabrics. I was not even asking her questions, placed all things nicely back in the same spot and was quietly shopping in the store. She rudely asked me to move multiple times so she could put fabrics back in the areas where I was standing. When I returned at a later date with my boyfriend, the same woman was there and I had a similar experience. I told my boyfriend that we should just leave and we put down the fabrics that we had gathered and were looking at (they had not been cut yet) in a pile at the counter and walked out. As we left she called my boyfriend an "A**hole" for not putting everything back. I was in shock and have never had such bad customer service! We called and made a complaint to corporate and they were not helpful at all. I will NEVER return to this store and would not recommend this location to anyone. read more

They have stuff for crafts but are always understaffed. Right now, they have a lively gentleman sitting outside cleaning each cart and welcoming people. He is happy and welcoming but most of the staff is flat. This is not a happy place. When I went during Covid 19, the line for people buying fabric was enormous. They rarely have enough staff. I've been going for 3 years. I live in San Francisco and craft stores are hard to come by so I go to this store as my children hada class at The Cave for 4 years. I went in July 2020 to buy fairy house materials for my 10 year old to do during quarantine. You can get what you need but you will wait in line and the staff is not happy. I traveled half an hour to this location to purchase some fabric. Arrived at 10:15 to find a sign posted on the door that they weren't going to open until 12 o'clock due to staffing shortage. I give the store 3-stars mainly because my niece managed a Jo-Ann Fabric store and I worked at one in my youth. The store is ridiculously busy especially before a holiday. Plan to spend hours waiting in line. The store is 50% fabric and 50% craft and a whole lot of other stuff. This is the best choice most communities have to offer. It seems the store offers a little of everything but not enough of any one thing. I found Michaels has more yarn varieties, however JoAnn has more crochet/knitting supplies. The fabrics are mainly cottons and fleece, however the quality is not the highest. Of course, the store carries a small variety of upholstery fabrics a few silks, a few patterns and a few sewing machines but quality is not the highest. If you have the time to burn and know what you want, then try this store. If you need high quality items and customer service then this store may not be for you. The hours are good and coupons are plentiful. It is the main store for fabric in Marin so be prepared. read more

Jo-Ann's is right by the freeway and open until 9 PM most nights. I'd been meaning to stop by for a while and finally checked it out tonight. When I first walked in, I was super disappointed because I walked into the HUGE fabric section and was afraid they would not have yarn. When I made it into the other craft areas though, I got more interested and was super psyched when I discovered the yarn. The yarn was inexpensive and the selection was great. I bought a few rolls and definitely plan to come back to buy a bunch more. I also looked around for home decorations. They had a few that were cool but they seemed a bit over-priced for not very high quality. The store was not busy and there was no line at the check-out... Basically my 4 stars are for the YARN! Horrible and racist customer service. I went in politely to ask if I could pick my online order early since I happened to be in the area. An older woman named Nancy gave me attitude acting like I was an a-hole for even trying. She very curtly pointed out they were busy. When I asked her what aisle my item was in she told me she didn't know. Then I said who would know and she told me to take ticket and wait in line at the fabric counter. I went to Corte Madera store to pick up fabric with my kids. I always go to there clearance section first for fabric deals being that times are hard but I still want to find ways to keep my kids busy and creative. My daughter, who has a learning disability found a fabric she wanted to make her dad a blanket with. The fabric was $15.99 with a gray sticker being 80% off. Which was posted. So my daughter did the math and figured out it Should come to 3.19 or 3.20 give or take a couple pennies. We go to the cutting station and asked to have it scaned to show my daughter she did the math correct. But was told it came to 5 and some change. I showed the lady on a calculator what it should come to. She told me no the calculator was wrong. In the middle of asking her how she figured it was wrong she turned around started to walk away and yelled back at me she'll be back. I assume she went to get a manager. After about 5 minutes I hear who i think is the manager say it doesn't matter leave it at 5 and some change a yard. I asked the lady so you guys don't honor ur sales prices? She told me to take it or leave it and laughed. I asked what was funny and why would she say that. She asked me if everything in my cart was from the cleance rack. I told her yes. She rolled her eyes laughed again And said she wasn't doing nothing about the prices. I asked her name (she wasn't wearing a name tag) and all she did was stare at me. I was so taken back by everything that my children and I just left. My daughter thought she did the math wrong and the lady was laughing at her. I tried to erasure it wasn't her. This place lives up to its negative reviews. I have plenty of time to write this review as I stand in a seemingly endless-slooooooow moving line. I'm only sticking around because I've committed to what's in my cart after searching around the unorganized and lightly stocked store. I came in to buy supplies for a simple holiday project for my kids. After gathering most of what I need, the final (and most important) item on my list is nowhere to be found in the store. Forget about asking anyone for help because they ... won't. In fact I don't think I saw anyone on the floor that was available to assist customers in 30+ minutes that I spent here. Not a smile in the joint. Overall, I will likely not be back. This place is no bueno. The only reason it's getting 2 stars is because it's the holidays and I'm feeling generous. read more

I have been a Joann's patron for 40 years. I have shopped at the stores in Mountain View, Pleasanton, San Mateo, (used now) Emeryville, and Morgan Hill, just to name a few. As of December, this store in Corte Madera became my home store. The floor staff are wonderful, they work hard at being helpful and knowledgeable. They are prompt to move the lines along whether it be at cutting table or cashier areas. The 3 stars are for the store General Manager and the persons responsible for some of the store policies. Every store I have requested a price match for the exact item listed on joann.com have extended the lower online price. The Corte Madera store said NO. I have written to headquarters. We will see what happens.. as for me and shopping there. Because of convenience I may get emergency items. Britex and Discount Fabric in SF may get most of my business even with a bridge toll. read more

I guess I know why this store doesn't have the highest yelp ratings because I do understand what most people are complaining about but I certainly don't completely agree. For example the employees aren't going to win any customer service awards but I don't consider them rude, it is a smaller store but I always find every thing I'm ever looking for and the parking lot is situated sort of tightly put I've only seen the parking lot full once and that was during all the holiday craziness. I personally really enjoy this store. I frequently have to purchase decorations and craft supplies for my job and it's never very busy in here and if you stay on top of when the seasonal stuff goes on 70% off you can get some AMAZING deals. I am a regular with my service dog in training and its a pet friendly store totally respect that! However people who bring their aggressive demon dogs shouldn't be let in. There is a man there right now to make sure the store doesn't reach capacity and thank you sir. HOWEVER! Please educate yourself on service dog etiquette! You dont talk to the dog you talk to me, this is the reason we give you fake names for our service dogs! She doesn't respond to anything but to her name or my command! Also a few months back i had a medical episode there because a woman cause me to start hyperventilating because she slammed her fist on the counter top because she did something wrong. Not a fun place for someone with a service animal but the staff know us and some women there are super sweet! But 2 women and 2 men there are absolutely awful and a pain to deal with. read more

Confusing Joann Fabric in NYC can get 5 stars, but somehow the one in Corte Madre doesn't give the same Covid service

The store and the employees seem to have the same affect; they're lost in the doldrums. It's a narrow rectangular building with very little natural light that feels both dingy and small at the same time. I'm used to the Rohnert Park store which has much more space and a larger abundance/variety of various craft items than this one. It's got just the basics and low quantities of those at best because there isn't the shelf room to hold much. I went here specifically for raffia and ribbon. I found two small bundles of dyed raffia and not enough of the color of ribbon I needed to complete the craft in mine. When I asked if there was more raffia in the stockroom to the one person on the floor (a tired employee at the fabric counter already swamped with five other customers) I was told that what I see is what I get. Unfortunately, because this was a class project, the two bundles would only serve four children and I would have to hunt at another location for the other 26. The check out was another ordeal. The one cashier had but one speed and with 7 customers in front of me, it took over a half an hour before I got out. A trip that normally would take 10-15 minutes at the Rohnert Park store took, in total, about an hour. I was really disappointed and under whelmed at what this site had to offer. I really can't stand walking in to this store. The "energy" is so bad. None of the employees seem happy. Overworked, not appreciated by their manager. Nobody smiling. Horrible. The manager today was very mean to me as I was simply trying to figure out how to download the app. She seemed bothered by me and was sharp with me. But the worst part is their bathroom. Yikes! FILTHY! Whenever I go in to the bathroom I am hoping that it will be clean but it is not ever clean. Today I walked in there. Smelled like poop. The toilet was filthy. Excrement under the lid and all around the inside of the toilet, like usual. The toilet cleaning tool was filled with excrement and it was even on the wall. Sink surround filthy. Door handle filthy. Floors filthy. Don't think I will ever walk in this place again. If I could post photos I would but I don't see how to here. I'm honestly wondering why this store is still open. If I could give zero stars I would. September 11th I came to purchase fabric. Nobody was at the counter to cut it for me. I politely asked the woman if she could cut it for me. She replied "or your talking to me" "it's nobody in the front" I told her no and she insisted that somebody else help me. ILL NEVER BUY ANYTHING FROM HERE. She is a short woman with grey hair. I am new to the whole sewing thing. Just started taking classes and I had to come here for supplies. The ladies couldn't have been more unhelpful. Instead of showing me where an item was that I was looking for, she barely looked up, and just pointed to the back of the store and said "back there". Any time I asked a question, I was looked at as if I was an idiot, even after apologizing and telling them I was a beginner. I shopped JoAnn Fabrics since 1980 in Ohio & Texas, when it was actually a decent fabric store. They also owned "Showcase of Fine Fabrics" which had wonderful designer fabrics, silks, jacquards, linens, rayons, challis, serge wools, European fabrications, Waverly decor fabrics - the works. This company has totally changed their direction : to sell crap. Crafts crap, plastic crap, crappy candy, anti-barking dog collars, window squeegees, it's amazing what crap is in their store now. They no longer sell quality fabrics. The problem I think is that public schools no longer offer sewing classes (home ec). the percentage of people sewing is declining. JoAnn's is trying to make money somehow & they're punching through (badly) to the crafts market. Basically, to change what they're doing, customers need to buy crafts supplies at Michael's in San Rafael, crappy decor things at Target, and stick to buying fabrics & sewing items at Joanns to have the corporate powers that be get the message. In the 80's & 90's when Joann's had quality fabrics, it attracted men & women who normally shopped there (and who were knowledgeable about sewing) to actually also work there - because they loved being around fabric & patterns. They were also helpful people because they were passionate about sewing. Now JoAnn's attracts - who? - to work there. Plastic lovers? Also, the amount of plastic in their store would set off my allergies like crazy if I worked there. And their fabrics are preserved with formaldehydes now. Now that Poppy Fabrics is gone from Oakland, there is only Britex in San Francisco and Dharma Trading in San Rafael (for a variety of ivory colored silks, white linen, raw silk, hemps,& bamboo). read more

I walked in with my sister, who frequents these kind of places, she's an art student, so I've been ALL over.., and I walked in to find a lady putting fabric away. I asked her, "Excuse me, do you have any leather?" Her response, and I shit you not, a very cold "No." Didn't even look at us, and kept on about her business. Well, fucking sorry for disturbing your fabric organizing. We decided to walk in anyway and look for vinyl, pleather, ANYTHING. We found some, and walked to the counter. SAME lady was there, and completely ignored us..AGAIN. JESUS H CHRIST!! Then, another lady came to help us. At first she was real helpful, not too friendly, but whatever, she helped us with fabric and what not. She cut a piece of fabric for us, and decided we needed to change the fabric because it wasn't going to work with what my sister needed for school. The lady seemed really irritated at this, and I can understand, but she only cut a foot of the damn thing..but whatever. She told us she would sell it to us for a discount, but we told her we didn't need it and we couldn't use it, so we didn't WANT it. It came time to check out, and the fabric cutters give you this piece of paper that has a tally of all the fabric you cut, how much of it, and the cost. When the clerk told us the total I was a little surprised because it was so high, I asked to see the piece of paper and GUESS WHAT, the piece of fabric we DIDN'T want was on the bill.... What the FUCK. AND the fabric wasn't even in our basket. I could understand if she slipped up, charged us AND put it in our basket to take to the register, but NO. She just charged us for it... She happened to be at the register next to mine, and I said, "Um, why did you charge us for this fabric? We said we didn't want it." She said, "Oh, I thought you wanted it. " I said, "Ok, well if that were the case, WHY is it not in our BASKET?" Bitch tried to pull one over on me. I'm sorry, but this kind of shit really pisses me off, people thinking I'm that dumb and naive, no-probably the ONLY thing that makes me so mad I have to call people out on it. I don't like being made a fool of, or assumed to be stupid. period. She apparently was caught off guard because she had this "oh shit" look on her face. I used to LOVE Jo-Ann's but I find as I start projects that are a little 'off the wall' I can't find everything I need at Jo-Ann's. For example, at this particular location they do not sell any mosaic materials, so they didn't carry any type of grout material. They don't sell sandpaper. They don't sell Gesso (and half the employees didn't even know what it was). The acrylic paint is limited to a small rack of options so there were only 5 shades of orange to choose from. Which yeah.. mix your own colors, but when the background color is orange and I need as much paint as I do for it, I would like to be able to just buy the color to eliminate any differences in the overall look. Also, they only sell the regular sized paint, no large bottles. Enough griping.... Here's what they do have a lot of: Fabric Ribbon Sewing supplies Flowers Random seasonal crap I'll keep stopping here for the basics or for fabric, but I can't rely on them for my crazy art supply needs. This is location is soooo easy to stop at though it makes it tempting to stop anyways... You could spit on Hwy 101 from the parking lot, it's that close. read more

I can't find anything here, ever. The lines are horrendously long, always. They won't let you cut your own fabric so you have to wait for the one person who has scissor privileges to help whomever is in line before you. USELESS and TOTALLY inefficient. And, they have to fill out this little form with the sku# on it so if you happen to get a piece of ribbon or cord that doesn't have a number, well just forget about it. Don't even bother. Put that mother F'er back on the shelf b/c it's gonna be too much of a pain in your azz to deal with it. And, as much as I try to love all those little old ladies that shop here, I'm gonna tell it like it is.. YOU ALL ARE A PAIN IN MY ASS.. This is not the 1950's anymore. IF YOU DON"T EXPECT MUCH, YOU'LL BE OK They have a good selection of basic fabrics for quilting. Lots of middle America prints, flannels, solids. A smattering of batiks and Asians. Main reason to go here is they are inexpensive. Usually I get my backing fabric here for $6-ish per yard. Also, they always have notions and threads on sale, so I pick up these things while I'm there. Main reasons I dislike going here is the apathetic and disinterested staff. These people don't give a rat's ass about your quilt or project, your questions, their job. Punch in and punch out. I bought a sewing machine here and couldn't believe the lousy service I got. I really can't stand this store! I rarely write negative Yelp reviews. But Joann fabrics really deserves another negative review. Especially from me I have been shopping at the Corte Madera store for almost 20 years, I will go to another fabric store from now on for the following reasons R First, there is always a line. The employees aren't in any way going to call for additional help when they see customers waiting in line. If you ask them to call for additional help, they simply won't or they will tell me rudely that there is only one cashier. Lastly, the products and quality of their merchandise has really suffered. I mean literally I bought some arts and crafts there for Christmas and the pieces fell apart before I got a chance to use them. read more
