If you are a quilter, sewist, crafter, or hobbyist, the chances are high that you will find what you need for a good price at Joann's! I'm a quilter and it is sad to see that so many of the fabric stores in the Birmingham area have closed in recent years. But that means that I have been shopping at Joann's more now than I ever did before. Joann's doesn't carry much designer quilting fabric, but it does have a good selection of cotton basics suitable for quilting. It also has a lot of notions and other quilting supplies that usually can be counted on to shore me up during a quilting "emergency"! Max, the assistant manager of this location, is wonderful. She's knowledgeable and friendly, and most of all--UNFLAPPABLE! She is a multi-tasking queen! It is not uncommon to see her at the fabric cutting center, answering the phone, fielding questions from staff, and helping customers find what they need. Joann's doesn't just carry quilting cotton. They carry a full range of fabric from apparel to formal wear to home decor to upholstery to cosplay, and much more! Beyond fabric and sewing supplies, this location also has a good inventory of supplies for other hobbies (painting, drawing, calligraphy, knitting, cross stitch, needlepoint, upholstering, jewelry making, etc.) and also seasonal holiday decor. The cherry on top is that they allow my dog Nash to shop in the store, as long as he is on his leash and minding his manners. Win win!!! That being said, this store *could* use some improvements--a deep cleaning, new layout, and better stocked shelves. I'm hopeful that these things will follow as Joann's recovers from its bankruptcy difficulties. The store got a new general manager at the beginning of the summer, but I've never seen him. I hope that he will step up the staffing levels, because that is what the store seems to suffer from the most--understaffing. It can take a LONG time to check out because there will often only be one cashier handling both the curbside orders and in-store transactions. Also, there is often a lot of incoming inventory stacked up in the aisles waiting to be shelved. It is clear that the number of people working each shift do not have bandwidth to take that on also. (That isn't their fault.) Joann's has my loyalty and I hope that they will continue to serve the greater Birmingham community for many years to come. read more

The reason they filed Bankruptcy again could be because of the employees and why nobody tries to shop with them. The way that I was talked to today from 2 employees and 1 being a manager they might need to think about hiring new people or closing down. The way you communicate with people is the key! The staff is RUDE, disrespectful, on phones instead of cleaning up things so that they can put out new merchandise. So many boxes everywhere and you can't even push a cart down the aisle. I understand people want things but hire over night employees to come stock or take away the old stuff. IT is a fire hazard!!!! read more

I had never been to Joanns fabric before I was expecting to see jelly rolls, charm packs, layer cake, honey buns and a bunch of different fat quarter bundles No. They had a couple of layer cakes, charm packs were white only, barely any jelly rolls. It was a big disappointment. read more

Well I definitely miss the old Hancock Fabrics in Avondale. I used to shop their with my mom. But, I guess Jo-Ann Fabrics is an ok replacement. It just seems a lot smaller. You can however order online and have things shipped to the store for pickup with no shipping charge. If you have items sent to your house, you will have to pay shipping. There was, however, a great discount section. We were able to buy 60 yards of heavy duty outdoor grade fabric for around $33.00. It's fun to look around. I love me some Jo-Ann's. Because of the cash back I can earn from my purchases through Ibotta, Jo-Ann's has become my craft store of choice instead of Michael's or Hobby Lobby. Anytime I have a project like decorating my cubicle at work or creating flower headbands or making a wreath, I stop by Jo-Ann's. They generally always have a sale going on and there's always a coupon so check their website or download their app to see what kind of discount you may be able to get. My only gripe about this particular Jo-Ann's is that they seem short-staffed. When you can find someone on the floor who doesn't work in the fabric section, they seen more than happy to help. Also, the lines can get rather long before the singular cashier calls for help or gets help. Honestly, as long as Ibotta keeps offering cash back, I'll be getting all my craft needs from Jo-Ann's. read more

I have only been to this particular location to make returns, no purchases, but they are always very helpful with those transactions even thought the products were not purchased from their store. Good customer service and never have to wait long in line. Store parking lot can be a little tricky to enter/exit, so keep that in mind when visiting. read more

Since my overall knowledge of fabric stores is limited, this review is a bit tricky. I just don't have much to compare it to. I went by to get a display board and extra foam to make a homemade sound proof barrier. While the store, as I assume most fabric/craft stores are, was a bit cluttered and spread out, I was still able to find these items within a few minutes. The price on the tri-fold display board was a bit high, but that might be normal. As for the foam, I'm not really sure what the price was (or at least what it was supposed to be). Underneath the square yard of high-density foam, there was a sign that said, "50% off" in bold print. It then said (please don't quote me exactly) 'Regularly 4.99-34.99, now 2.99-17.99.' I'm sure that was for the different sizes, but there was only one size there. Anyway, I was just a bit confused. The square yard ended up being 7.49 and I was fine with that. Joann fabric is not a bells and whistles type of store. It is the best store for experience and novice sewing enthusiast. I can find dress patterns from all my favorite Vogue, Simplicity and McCalls. Unlike online shopping, I love looking through their books. I can judge whether a particular pattern is easy or difficult. I can find all my sewing machine accessories at a fair price. Considering we don't have a huge selection of fabric/cloth craft stores, Jo-Ann's is one of the best. I own my own sewing business, so this is usually my go to shop for some things. Granted, a lot of things are a quite bit higher here but if you are buying fabrics, a lot of times you want to see and feel them before purchasing and that is what I like about this store. Yes, I can get most of it online for cheaper but for some items I will pay the extra cost to ensure I am getting what I actually want. They do tend to have many sales going on and you can luck out on some really awesome deals. Lines at the cutting counter can be long at times, so make sure to grab a number and watch the hanging bulletin over the counter for your number. One of my favs is the remaining, extra fabric selection! Everything is an additional 50% off at purchase. Looking for great holiday deals? Make sure to go after xmas for the 50%-75% sales. Great scrapbooking selection as well. Staff can be hit or miss here, I have had awesome customer service and not so great. Don't expect to be able to bring your fur babies with you here like other craft stores because they don't allow pets. I actually had to reschedule my trip because I had my dogs with me. Very disappointing and ridiculous. Otherwise the store is ok. Generally clean, but the selection is limited depending on what you're looking for. I've had good and bad experiences with the staff; some of them are really nice and some are pretty rude. May the force be with you. read more

I go to Jo-Ann's more now because my other favorite store closed. I I rated the store a two because one the staff is nice always helpful and the stories very clean but there is where it ends. A lot of items that I need they tell me I need to order online or they have in the store but they only keep the seasonal colors in store. it's not a large variety . Thanks to the lovely woman at the service desk, you are not getting my business. I spoke with a nice woman this morning about foam stuffing for a seat cushion. I wasn't sure about the dimensions, so she suggested I bring it in and they can measure it. I explained it twice and asked her if she could please measure it. I even brought 3" and 4" foam to the desk that were both bigger than me. Both times her response was, "so what do you want?" I didn't know and she wouldn't measure it for me. read more

I looked so forward to visiting Birmingham and shopping at Joanns. (There are no Joanns in my town) What a disappointment. Their prices are about the same as that other large fabric store, but fabric is not as nice. The service is terrible. Just terrible. You take a number at the fabric cutting table. One cutter. Who takes her sweet time. Gabbing, wandering around the store, calling numbers and waiting forever for the ticket holder to come to the table. But worst of all, she answered the phone in the middle of cutting a customer's fabric, and was searching for a fabric the phone customer requested. Good grief. I left the store without purchasing. Customer service lacking-- workers do not offer their help, must be chased down. VERY SLOW checkout-- long line with only one register open. When second register opens, two people are checked out before the worker leaves the register to help another cashier. When finally checked out, cashier waits until I've put credit card away to tell me she needs to see card for verification. read more

I love the selections and prices. Customer service is nonexistent. There is no one available to ask questions or receive help at the Hoover store. Also, there is ALWAYS a long line to checkout. There is usually only one cashier. When I ask if there is another cashier to assist with long lines, they state, NO. The stores do have price checks machines, but they do not work and have been "out of order" for a long time. I have left the store without purchasing any items more than I was willing to wait in the long line. Sad! read more

The only real drawback is that, even if I go in for something specific for a specific project, I come out wanting to start other projects and learn new skills. My only complaint, and the only reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars, is the checkout process. I like this Joann ... I have been to quite a few and granted I typically shop for yarn verses actual fabric so I cannot comment on the quality of the fabric options. The customer service to me is wonderful .. Everyone is always friendly and asks me what projects I'm working on next. And they do not get upset when I have my multiple coupons lol. The staff at Jo-Ann are friendlier than "other" shops, but they do know me well. They have a decent but not stellar selection of sewing supplies and fabrics. Prices are higher than can be found online, but they have some great coupons that are almost always available. Awful customer service!!!!! I was in the store just this past Tuesday, a young man IN UNIFORM was standing at the customer service... I was having trouble finding an item so I politely asked him where I may find it and his respond was "I can't help you!" I was certainly confused.... I thought ok, maybe he doesn't know where it is and gave him a strange look, he then repeated himself, this time adding "I'm on break!" I then asked him if he would at least point me in the right direction. He said "no, I'm on break". Absolutely ridiculous!!! What happened to common courtesy? Most times I'm in the store (at least 5 times a month) I stop to help someone out. Not only are they rude but are short staffed. Every time I'm in there, there is a line and one person checking everyone out. To add to the frustration, tonight I called the store to see if they had a product I needed (prior to driving 30mins). The lady that answered said "I'm pretty sure we have it". I nicely was asking her to check to see if they had it and while I was still talking she put down the phone to go check. Came back and said yes "we have it". I told her "thank you so much for checking, have a nice night"... No response, she just hung up!!! I had her on speak phone... Me and my husband looked at each other and thought "did that just happen?!" I called back and tried to speak with the manager. He was the worst!!! Cut me off while I was talking, I asked him to let me finish and he kept saying "don't do that, don't do that" (Not quite sure what that means!). Obviously I was heated because of the awful experiences I've had in just a few days time. He was unapologetic. Only said, well that's not the way I train my employees and he will talk to them about it "another day" (not quite sure what this means either!!). I told him I was going to contact corporate and his response was "that's fine"!!! Well that's a real SHOCKER!!! This is certainly not the first times this has happened... 90% of the time I leave there I'm upset about something... Either the lack of customer service or the rude service I receive. I'm in the party planning business and spend THOUSANDS of dollars at this store. Tuesday was the last dollar I will ever spend there!! Go to Hobby Lobby... I'm using 3 stars because it is in the middle. Any given trip to this store could be fabulous or a nightmare. It is like the store itself is bipolar or something (no disrespect to those fighting that illness, I just don't know how else to say it). If the cutting table folk are awesome then the cashiers will be cranky. If the cashiers are in good form (rare) then the rest of the staff seems to be upset. The only staff I haven't had random "why are you bothering me by shopping here" encounters with is the class coordinator but we've only taken one class. Over all it is just exhausting to go there because you have to be ready for a fight you didn't start. read more
