Needed some paper for a pattern at first I couldn't locate it. Fortunately I managed to locate it over in the paper and crafting section. This store is really a hidden gem! I managed to acquire the paper pattern I needed, but also discover that they have scrapbooking supplies and knitting supplies pretty much any arts and crafts you can imagine. Our other arts and crafts stores in town, but I like the fact that this one isn't so huge you get exhausted walking from one side to the other. The customer service today was severely lacking. It was appalling the apathetic attitude I received. I asked several employees (as I tried to hunt one down for help), one by one I was met with "I'm busy at the register!" (Even though she was walking in the store helping another customer). "That is not my department!" (As she stayed seated, not bothering to call someone else for help) "Go take a number and wait" (Even though I wasn't needing help from the fabric counter, and it had an extremely long line). "We don't have that!" (Is the attitude I got when the line had finally died down). If I was not with my friend, who really wanted to be there, I would have just left. I literally came in for one item. Believe me, I should have just left. If an employee (or several in this instance) cannot be bothered to help customers in a polite and helpful manner, they don't deserve my business or to work there, in my opinion. Most of their items are overpriced, I would hardly call it a value. I am upset that they would treat any customers in this way. However, to treat customers with a disability in this manner, is inexcusable. I was so upset during my time at the Modesto Joann Fabric and Craft Store today. The only silver lining was the young woman at the register when we were ready to check out. I didn't catch her name, but she was wearing face painting make-up from the movie Saw. She was super helpful and friendly. She is a 5 star employee. The rest were God-awful! Bottom Line: I won't be back any time soon. read more

Just when I thought this Joann couldn't get any worse, they turned off the heat. Yes, they're requiring employees to work in a store that's below 50 degrees inside. Every employee I've dealt with there lately is lovely, but... some of them are going to be ill before too long. Of course, the shelves are mostly empty. The reason they only warrant three stars is their service. Nothing against the two people that helped me today but unfortunately the Company has downsized and only have two employees working the entire store. If you have plenty of time they have a great selection and today they had quite a few sales and clearances but as I mentioned you must have a lot of time to actually be assisted. read more

I shop at this Modesto store quite often later in the day when there are much less customers in which there were on this day of my visit. I was the only customer at the cut counter it was not like this employee was overwhelmed at the time, and it's not just Kathy it's a few other employees also they have this demeanor about themselves like they hate their job or do not like assisting customers (which is the general public) and it's their job. This store has absolutely the WORST customer service. I went in for the cricut easy press. They have over 100 papers there saying "pull one and take it to the counter" I waited in the huge line only to be told they are out of stock Well why wouldn't you take those down All of the ladies look absolutely sour. When you ask them a question it's like you are the biggest bothersome in the world. I will never NEVER come here again. And it's not because they were out of stock, it's because of their horrendous attitude and lack of compassion and customer service. Also I would like to add that Angie was the one who helped me and she didn't seem the least worried that a customer was upset. She just stared at me like I was some creature. If I could give this store a negative I would. I traveled for over an hour to get there. I came in to the store in well worn and slightly dirty work clothes and I was given the stink eye (probably thought I was another homeless) when I asked for the key to the restroom. I was refused the bathroom. Just because I go in not dressed to the nines doesn't give them the right to act this way I have been in this store before and bought some scissors and I passed it off as a cranky person for the day. Second time I needed something else and the sales lady wasn't friendly and was snide. Both times it was an act of Congress to get the restroom key. I have boatloads of cash, I could be buying a $25,000 sewing machine if I wanted to. I am treated like a second class citizen every time. I will be taking my business elsewhere from now on. read more

Had I read reviews for this location beforehand, I would've tried elsewhere but as I was in a hurry, I decided to swing through Jo-Ann's. You know that part in Pretty Woman where Julia Roberts says "Big Mistake... Huge!" and everyone laughs because it's true? The same could be said for stopping here and getting fabric cut in a timely fashion. I must've waited in line/wandered around the store for 45 minutes with my deli-counter number just for two measly yards of fabric. I was in your store yesterday..one cashier, line 10 deep, and the one cashier is having to answer the phone as well when it rings! Not only that, you have other employees talking to each other VERY loud. Why can't they walk up to each other to communicate?! The new management team and service clerks are making a noticeable difference at this store. I've lost track of how many years I've shopped here but have lived in Modesto for 18 years and been a crafter of some sort or another so have shopped here a long time. I was shopping at Jo-Ann today and needed fabric that had only a portion of the fabric for my project on the bolt. The sales clerks went out of their way to locate the fabric and have it shipped. Not my favorite Joann's, but today was just frustrating! I went in the store to buy supplies for a stuffed animal my four year old wanted. No body said hello and nobody offered to help. This is such an awesome place to get crafts. When my kids have projects, we always go there. It's such an awesome place to be when you are out of ideas and your stumped. So if you want a place to find crafts, etc, then this is the place to be! The lines are sometimes a little long, but it's worth waiting. The arts and crafts there, are expensive and a little cheap. This is the worst Jo Ann Fabric store in Northern California. They never, ever clean the dust bunnies behind the cut counter, and the Gen. Manager, Alicia was incredibly RUDE to me, when I applied to work there, even though I have 2 degrees in Fashion Design, & have worked in a Fabric store, before. She also rudely told me, she "didn't like that I used to check in, with the previous manager, in Stockton, before leaving for church, to see if he needed me there early!" The Jo-Ann Fabric and Crafts store in Modesto is not one of the chain's Super Stores. The building is smaller, but it is packed with a wide enough variety of supplies to keep any crafter happy! While its not a replacement for smaller, specialty stores, you can usually find what you need. I've been in a number of Jo-Ann stores that were messy and where the fabric was poorly stored and in disarray. This store isn't one of them. Sometimes the line is long at the cut counter, but the staff is friendly and professional. They work quickly and efficiently. Really, I think it's the people that work at this location that keep me coming back. They are always helpful. Jo-Ann Fabric also has great sales and coupons, which can often be combined. I went into Joann's yesterday morning because I was looking for a birthday present. What I found online, I couldn't find in the store. I asked one of the sales clerks if there was someone on the floor who could help me find something. She said, sure if you get in the line behind all those people and then when it's your turn, I'll help you. She continued with, there's only three of us working right now so you'll have to wait. I got into the line and when it was my turn, I went to another sales clerk. She was very helpful, looking to see if the item was in stock-- it was online only. The sales clerk that had been rude earlier told the lady helping me she needed to take a break. The lady continued helping me and when I couldn't find the coupon on my phone (it was a new phone and when I was showing her the product I was looking for I couldn't get back to the screen that had the coupon.) The sales clerk told the lady helping me, she really needed to go on break. I told the sales clerk, that my sales clerk was helping me like she had told me to wait in line for. This lady's behavior was unacceptable, especially when she saw that my sales clerk was helping me. Kudos to my sales clerk for telling her she was busy helping me and would take a break when she was done. It seems the rude behavior was because she was mad at management because they didn't schedule enough people on a sales day then she needs to take it up with management not on customers. The line was very long for a Saturday morning with only one person at the register. What's worse is there is no one on the floor to help customers. Another lady was waiting for help with a question about the Cricut machine. three people in the entire store is ridiculous management. I doubt I will be returning to that store. read more

Always find what I'm looking for here. huge fabrics selection, and of course whatever other sewing supplies you may need. The older ladies who help you measure out fabric are always a blast, and always have a great story to tell. Last couple times I went the lady who cut mine gave me half off just for smiling at her! The ladies were very helpful and patient with me when I asked how long it should be to make a blanket and they gave me a few pointers on how to make them as well. Love this store! It does get busy but a lot of people like to shop there so waiting in line is just part of shopping. This store is seriously disorganized and management needs to improve. There is no excuse for 4 employees to be standing around at the cut-out station with a long line of customers with only one employee actively serving customers! If I have to wait more than 10 minutes to be served--without at least being acknowledged--I'm walking out without my purchase. Frankly, I go out of town in preference to going to this location. Ladies, if you're on break, or if you're not a qualified 'cut-out person', then don't stand around and chat while customers are waiting. You just make people angry, your store lose customers, and the customer service provided is pathetic. This store needs to implement a policy like grocery stores where if there is more than 3 people in line, an employee should be paged to come to the cut-out stand. I haven't been into joanns for awhile. I was searching for a particular nylon string for beading in a specific size. According to their website it said that was I was looking for was in stock. I went in and could not for the life of me find what I was looking for, all I could find was beading WIRE. So I asked a worker to help me, she proceeded to show me where I was looking and said "looks it's all here", I said "no that's all beading wire, I'm looking for beading string in a particular size". She proceeded to look and looked on the aisle next to it and said "there are tons of beading string here,"? I said "but again, I'm looking for a specific size". She said "well we probably don't have it then"! I said "so your website is wrong then "? I proceeded to show her my phone and she said "that not our website that's GOOGLE. " I said" my search engine is Google yes but it says here that joanns Carrie's it at THIS ADDRESS". She then ignores me and says "Google isn't always right ". I said" can you just search the item number so I know then"? What do you know she searches item number and it takes here to its direct location . Please re train your employees especially in customer service. Its disrespectful for employees to treat a customer like they are stupid. Won't be returning . read more

curb side pick up SUCKS, just an fyi for anyone who may want to order with them that this is not the way to go if you are looking to get your products anytime soon... they'll take your money right away and then make you wait days until you can pick up. excruciatingly s l o w , would not recommend that particular service again. best thing to do is just wait in line, at least you'll go home with what you want! staff is not helpful and just want to go home, i get it but when there is none else at the store ... i'd like to think they'd try to go above and beyond for their customers but unfortunately when your in demand that service goes out the window... just going to wait and wait and wait. read more

Took sewing classes taught by a CRAFTER, not a SEAMSTRESS. By third class, realized fabric was cut on wrong side, blouse would be put together inside out. Wasted that class by cutting fabric AGAIN. Now I get to try and sew it at home with NO HELP! Joanns knows this is wrong. Puts too much stress on the crafter and the new sewer. Terrible customer service. But now I know its all about the money for them. They dont care about the employee or the customer. Shame on them. I ment to send this a few days ago when a friend and I shopped there one afternoon. The place was packed, the cutting station there was a huge wait, nothing out of the normal for this time a year. With all this going on and as an ex store manager and DM I noticed a hard worker and a outstanding team leader in that store that day. His name was Lupe said he was with the company for three years and it showed. He product knowledge was out standing, he knew what ever aisle had and its placement. Lupe seen that two people at the cutting station wasn't enough he got back there and got that line moving, even ended up cuting fabric for us. Once the line went down he shot across to the registers to start ringing. Now a says its hard to find hard dedicated employees as Lupe . Not only that with a smile, friendly attitude. You can tell that he has a fan base by some of the ladys (shoppers) that where in the store that day. I would just like to say I wish more retail stores had people like him. read more
