Looking at the 4-H animals, walking through the commercial tent, getting donuts, people watching and taking in the food vendor sights/smells are part of that experience. We also like to grab a bite to eat while there. However, I'm just not interested in fighting the lines to get an expensive corn dog, sirloin tip and/or fish sandwich....and then having no where to sit, relax and eat our selections. Enter Mimi's Retreat! Mimi's Retreat is small community bar that is located on the south side of the square - so they are right in the middle of the action! They are always open during the fair and tend to have fewer customers than normal. This makes them a great choice to duck into to get a good meal, at a pretty good price and sit & relax away from the crowds. Mimi's has been a part of the Auburn scene for as long as I can remember. They are best described as a community bar. They have some TV's for sports viewing. The attractive looking bar will seat about 10 people. There are less than modern tables to seat about another 40 patrons. Mimi's is set in an old building. They have stayed true to the older feel in terms of wood work, brick and vintage feel. The decor mainly features bar modern day product signs and some historic Auburn pictures. The kitchen is easily viewed as you walk in the door. The place is rather comfortable and inviting. The staff here is welcoming and friendly. Mimi's service may not be the most attentive when the bar is busy - just be aware. The menu is pretty simple and moderately priced. They have the typical bar food with a few add-ons that give them a little boarder touch including non-bar food daily specials. I can't speak for bar service. It seems like they hustle the best they can. Food tends to come out at a decent pace - depending on the crowd. Mimi's is definitely a no-frills kind of place as the non-alcohol drinks are served in a Toby Keith style red Solo cup. Now onto the food. We started with the sweet potato fries. The fries are thin and fried to a moderate crisp - like you would expect, not mushy. The fry has a nice bold sweet potato taste. They aren't very oily. The real treat is the homemade Hawaiian pineapple dipping sauce. It is smooth, thick and sweet. You literally can taste the refreshing Hawaiian flavors which really bring out the bolder sweet potato taste. Definitely a must try! The blacken chicken Caesar wrap is very tasty. The chicken is very moist and nicely grilled. The mild tasting Caesar dressing is applied in moderation and helps pull all the flavors together. Note: this $8 item doesn't come with a side, that is extra. The Cole slaw is homemade and outstanding. It includes white and purple cabbage. Onions, carrots and red peppers are apart of this fresh tasting side. The Cole slaw is mayo based. However, the mayo is very lightly applied and it has a hint of vinegar flavoring - the best of both style Cole slaws. The fish dinner has seven medium pieces for $14.99. It comes with French fries and one side. The French fries were a lot like the sweet potato fries in terms of cut, firmness and oiliness - fairly good. The fish pieces tasted fresh-ish. No fishy or frozen tastes. The meat was soft, tender and slightly flaky. The breading is rather thin. It is also rather plain to taste - unlike a Fish of Stroh type fillet. The tarter sauce has a heavier mayo taste with a mild amount of pickle/tartar flavoring. It definitely isn't sweet or heavier on relish like I like it. Overall...Mimi's makes a good place to pick up a meal regardless of the time of year. Give them a try sometime when you are in Auburn.

Our server was friendly and took our orders promptly. My husband had the grilled chicken sandwich, I ordered the breaded tenderloin, and we shared fries. The sandwiches were good, but the fries were a bit disappointing--very small portion for nearly $5 extra. They were thin, McDonald's-style fries. The bar wasn't busy during our visit, with only a couple tables occupied at a time. Staff seemed to know most guests personally, greeting them with hugs. The music was loud, which may be fun for some, but felt a little overwhelming to us. The biggest issue was the restrooms, which had a very strong odor that made the experience unpleasant. Overall, the food itself was decent, but the portion sizes, loud atmosphere, and restroom cleanliness kept it from being a great visit.

Mad Anthony's Auburn Tap Room - dinning & relaxing downtown Auburn, Indiana…read more You can find Mad Anthony's just off the north side of the square in Auburn. It is set in an older building where they have kept the unique brickwork and history apart of the decor - nicely done! There is street parking available...though you may have to hunt for it. The serving team was friendly and helpful on this trip. Mad Anthony's has a large and varied menu. Plenty of choices for most dinners. I can not comment on the beer selections as this isn't my expertise. We started with the cheese curds which were excellent. The curd had a thick breading whose seasoning really accented the cheese and oil tastes. It comes off light and slightly crunchy. The cheese curd was simply delicious. It was slightly gooey and just under a shade under temperature hot. The marinara sauce was thick and heavy on the tomato taste. This made a good complement to the cheese flavor. Definitely give this a try! We also tried the fried pickles. The pickle was a very thin "stick" of dill pickle spear. It has a pretty good tart taste. However, I would prefer a thicker pickle and more bold pickle taste. The pickle was wrapped in a thicker breading that differed from the cheese curd. This breading was more corn meal based and textured. It comes off a little tougher and retains the oil taste more. The dill sauce was really thick, colder and somewhat difficult to dip into. Overall a nice appetizer with a different flare. I've been craving a deep dish pizza and just happened to get one at Mad Anthony's in Auburn. MA has about 8 different deep dish pizzas and 10 flatbread type pizzas to choose from. I went with the medium Politician deep dish pizza for $21. The crust on the edges of the pizza came out a bit tough and crunchy. The interior was nice and soft. The edge crust had a bit of a buttery flavor. The sauce was plentiful and sweet. They use plum Roma tomatoes in the sauce. This gives is a richer tomato taste and zing. It also enhances the moistness of the pizza while keeping the topping thick. The toppings were piled high and thick - as you would expect. There was plenty of fresh cheese to give you that pull apart stretch. The vegetable toppings were fresh and had a bit of crunch to them. The meat was layered nicely and plentiful. The pepperoni and sauce had a nice meat flavor that completed the taste pallet. Overall I thought this was a good pizza. I'm sure there are places that do deep dish even better. A member of our party ordered one of the flatbread pizzas. This looked delicious as well.

Upscale atmosphere but they didn't turn me away when I wanted to work on my laptop so points for that!!. I didn't go upstairs but it's possible they have a more casual dining atmosphere there. I had the prime rib vegetable soup and didn't send it back but it was not edible. It was quite heavy with grease. It had tons of potential but something went awry there. I also had the black and bleu salad with beef tips. It was quite good but had way too much dressing for me I should have ordered the dressing on the side anyway so that's on me. The flavor was great! The beef tips had a lot of flavor. I asked for them to be rare to medium rare and they came out medium which was fine I guess. If I were ordering a steak and it came out that way I would have had them redo it. But steak tips are hard to get right and get out to the table while still pink. I enjoyed that salad. Overall the food was excellent. Side note: The attire is more geared toward suits and dresses. But the staff treated every guest very well. I'd definitely return. ACS is filling a much needed gap in Auburn's dining options and they're doing a great job.

Ten dollar burgers are standard most places now, but over $15 for a burger meal at a drive thru stand may be hard for some patrons to swallow. The custard and soft serve is delicious, albeit, still not a cheap treat. The staff is always efficient and friendly. The inside appears clean and orderly. The outdoor seating area and the appearance is charming, while still maintaining the old school vibes and nostalgia we all love about the Brown House. It's not an inexpensive meal, but the quality is good, service is consistent, and they still include the peppermint in your sack to round off your meal.
