Interesting place. Let me cover the easy aspects first. The staff was very friendly and very gracious. Upscale atmosphere but they didn't turn me away when I wanted to work on my laptop so points for that!!. I didn't go upstairs but it's possible they have a more casual dining atmosphere there. I had the prime rib vegetable soup and didn't send it back but it was not edible. It was quite heavy with grease. It had tons of potential but something went awry there. I also had the black and bleu salad with beef tips. It was quite good but had way too much dressing for me I should have ordered the dressing on the side anyway so that's on me. The flavor was great! The beef tips had a lot of flavor. I asked for them to be rare to medium rare and they came out medium which was fine I guess. If I were ordering a steak and it came out that way I would have had them redo it. But steak tips are hard to get right and get out to the table while still pink. I enjoyed that salad. Overall the food was excellent. Side note: The attire is more geared toward suits and dresses. But the staff treated every guest very well. I'd definitely return. Visited tonight for our anniversary and the service and food were outstanding. After a bad experience at a different local restaurant last year, we decided to try Auburn City Steakhouse and it exceeded our expectations. The bread and butter were delicious. Along with the deviled eggs and cheese curds we ordered for appetizers. For our entrees, I had the pork chop while my partner had the one of their steaks and it was cooked perfectly. My pork chop was very juicy and not dry at all with a lovely peach glaze. The service was excellent as well. Our server was very attentive. We will be back for another special occasion. read more

The staff is excellent. Very attentive and professional. Our waiter was right on top of things and served us as we should be. The calamari was fresh and tasty. A slight amount of rubberiness. The breading was thick and tasty. Gave you a seafood seasoning flair. The deviled eggs were done in a black and blue style. I thought the eggs were small. They were presented well. The yoke filling was good but nothing outstanding. The blue cheese crumble made this dish. The chop salad was very tasty. The vegetables were fresh and finely cut. The dressing accented the salad without overpowering it. The dressing had a bit of creamy mayo type base with a slight seasoning that gave it a bit of spicy and pop. The baked potato was cooked to perfection. The butter and sour cream were a bit cold and difficult to spoon into the potato. Nice accent to the meat! The 12 oz medium rare prime rib was excellent. The cut probably had more marble than most would like - but I loved it!! The au ju and real horseradish made the dish even better. Overall...our experience was very good! I'm not one to complain but this place has gone downhill. I would hate for anyone to go in expecting a nice meal and having the sort of experience I had tonight. I started by ordering calamari as an appetizer with an espresso martini to drink. I got my drink about 20 mins later filled half way. That was fine, no complaints there but damn $14 for half a martini, never again. Calamari was ok but drenched with oil so they came out soggy. I ordered the walleye for dinner, it must have been sitting for quite a while, even the garnish was welted. It was so overdone and dry that there was no way I could get myself to eat it. And I was HUNGRY! So I politely gave it back and ordered a half chicken meal. Waited about 50 mins for it to be prepared. Got fed up and started to walk away to pay. The waitress finally showed up with my food and it looked dehydrated just like the fish. I lost my appetite and decided it's time to go. I didnt touch my food butttt they ended up charging us for it. Awful experience and it's not my first poor experience! The restaurant is nice and staff is friendly but the chef needs to pay closer attention to what he sends out. I'm extremely disappointed and will never go back. Not even for an espresso martini. Shortys steakhouse is only about 15 mins from there in Garrett, so I plan on going there because I am soooo hungry!! Just sucks that I had to pay for an entree I couldn't even eat. This one is hard to write...I loved the ambiance and historical building. But service as a major miss. We were there nearly 2 hours before entrees arrived and our waitress seemed overwhelmed. Multiple incidents of forgotten drinks or add ons. Food was a bit hit and miss as well. Truffle deviled eggs did not have any truffle flavor and were a bit rubbery. My poke bowl was very spicy...I have a decent spice tolerance but could not finish. My two dining partners loved their fish tacos and the fresh bread and garlic butter were amazing. Wife and I walking the Labor Day fair In Auburn and wanted a bite. Food truck lines way too long. Walked in at 5:30 on a Friday night without a reservation. Yeah I know but can't hurt. Gentlemen at the counter looked hard and found a nice table outside. Thank you! Waitress was awesome. Had a couple of drinks and appetizers. Prime rib tacos were fantastic. Highly recommend. Nonna's meatballs a little different. Has pickled vegetables on top. Didn't care for that but meatballs and sauce good. Wish I would've taken pictures. And just a suggestion, next year have them turn the portable toilets around so people on the patio don't have to keep seeing the insides. All in all a nice experience. read more

This place has a unique ambiance. You can sit downstairs with a fine dining atmosphere or upstairs with a bar atmosphere. We sat downstairs and had the dinner vibe. The server came, told us about the specials and the "soup of the moment" while taking our drink orders. I ordered the prime rib, medium rare with a baked potato and a chop salad. The server was very clear that no changes could be made to the salad but that we could choose an upgraded salad for a fee. It was a weird mixture of vegetables that really didn't go well together, I think next time I would get the soup or an upgraded salad. The baked potato was cooked perfectly. Butter and sour cream were served on the side, both in ample quantities. The prime rib was served in its own au jus. This added to the flavor but if someone was just a little clumsy it had the potential for disaster. The flavor was very good and was served with the most fresh horseradish I have ever had. For desert I tried the cheesecake. The server told us the backstory that they used to sell a NY style cheesecake that was really good but now hired a baker to make it in house and it is even better. I could not have been more disappointed in what I received. The only topping available was a smores topping so I chose to go with plain. It was very soft and mushy, indicating a lack of real cream cheese in the mix, I am sure there was some but not enough to give it the firmness cheesecake usually has. We had a work outting here in October. I think the place has a unique old school feel and thoroughly enjoyed the wooden floors and surroundings. The menu was good sized and had all the traditional steakhouse favorites. The server was quite energetic and a wee bit too flamboyant. But all in all, the service was good and attentive. We really wanted to like this place but we were left feeling disappointed. While the menu and ingredients seem high end and appealing, there seems to be some mishap in the actual kitchen/production of the food itself. Portion sizes vary wildly. Atmosphere: really cool interior and building! Loved the exposed brick. Drinks: great selection of wines and cocktails, which was the highlight for us. $9-$15 a glass for wine. Appetizers: the Millionare's Bacon and Surf & Turf Mac were good. Would definitely order these again. Salads: side salads were the size of an entree. The roasted beet salad was delicious and the Caesar & Wedge salads were good too. Entrees: this is where things fell apart. 5/6 of us felt our food lacked flavor overall. The veal was the best dish. Mashed potatoes were bland. Food temperatures were inconsistent. Shrimp was incredibly over cooked and rubbery. Amish chicken and was cooked well but again lacked flavor. This place absolutely without a doubt needs a new chef. You can't charge $30 a plate for food that tastes like it would get last place on Top Chef. Looked pretty, but that's about it. This evening my parents treated me to an amazing meal in a beautiful location, Auburn City Steakhouse. The atmosphere of this restaurant is so neat, with the original tin ceiling, neat lighting, and comfortable seating. I appreciated that tables were spaced appropriately, with good space for the wait staff to move among diners. Our waiter, Frank, was very attentive and knowledgeable. I enjoyed the chop salad and the fish of the day, a cedar planked salmon with a spicy chili sauce, broccolini, and roasted potatoes. It was our anniversary and I made the note during our reservation that is was for this. Not expecting anything out of the ordinary, but not one mention of the occasion to use. Over the last several years when we go to dinner at different establishments with Anniversary reservations , they have all mentioned the occasion. They were out of three of the items that we requested and we had a 7:00pm reservation. They were only half way through their dinner service. My wife's first offering of vegetables came out looking over cooked and smelled like fish. The replacement dish came out smelling like fish as well. We were very disappointed in our Mother's Day brunch. Our reservations were 2:00 which apparently was the end of the brunch. The food was almost gone and not replenished. As a guy with extensive experience the New York steakhouse circuit, my standards are pretty high. I age my own beef and not to brag but the steak i cook at home is pretty dog gone good and beloved by those who've eaten it. So for me bar is set at my ability to produce a great steak. That meaning for a steakhouse to be worth my money it had better produce something at least as good as mine. To impress me, your steak needs to generate a euphoria akin to that of an amazing sexual experience. Very few steakhouse have achieved this in my opinion so you won't see many five star steakhouses in my roster of reviews. That being said, Auburn City Steakhouse is pretty darn close. First and foremost, when you ask for a high quality scotch it's presented proper without asking. Neat with a large single rock on the side. Bravo. As hard as it was, we weren't quite hungry enough for appetizers but kudos on have bacon on the menu. You really can't call yourself a steakhouse without it in my opinion. Nor can you call yourself an American steakhouse with a proper wedge salad on the menu. Here is where i feel that Auburn City failed me. By the classic definition of a steakhouse wedge salad, a wedge of iceberg coated with fresh made blue cheese dressing, crumbled blue, tomato and crumbled bacon spell perfection. While I always appreciate creativity in cuisine, there's no need with the wedge. You just don't fix what isn't broken. Tragically, this wedge didn't even have the bacon ! Although the red onion isn't an absolute killer, it really just doesn't belong there. But walnuts on a wedge ? Un heard of and an absolute deal breaker for me. Call it anything you want but please for the love of Pete, don't call it a wedge on a steakhouse menu. Maybe at a gastro pub, but not as a precursor to a fine cut of aged beef. Moving along, the beet and spinach salad was very good (and appropriately named) as was the mushroom truffle risotto. The Brussels & bacon were top notch. The lesson ? Bacon makes everything better. Especially a wedge !! I had the prime ribeye and although i generally prefer my ribeye on the bone, a have nothing bad to say about this one. Granted it didn't look super impressive, but let me tell you it tasted fantastic. If you've read any of my other steakhouse reviews you'll see that i think tasting the nutty flavor that cones from aging beef for at least 40 days is what separates a quality steakhouse from a chain steakhouse. And if I'm gonna pay upwards of $60 for a steak, that flavor had better be there. And it absolutely was present in this steak. The seasoning compliments it without overpowering the flavor of the beef and the tenderness was reflective of a well aged and properly cooked steak. This place is very close to five stars. I gave it four stars for three reasons. The atmosphere is nice but being so wide open it's quite noisy, the alien wedge salad and in my opinion, the price is kinda high for the area. In New York i wouldn't balk at these numbers but in a quaint and tiny little town in the Midwest, it's a bit steep. But make no mistake, this restaurant is no joke. Okay. I'm going to start out by saying go try this place. The atmosphere is so cool. The building is historic and the food and drinks there are pretty great. Now, we've been going here for years so I will say it's not at its normal standards right now for me. A little bit short staff so it's a bit slower on service than it normally is. I was a little annoyed tonight though during our meal. Some of the staff and some of the people dining would be up and walking around not wearing their mask properly which annoyed me a little. Like a couple had it below their nose. Now maybe it was for a second and I caught them at the wrong moment so who knows. Then, as I mentioned, the service was a bit slower, but more time to enjoy each other's company I guess. Then what I didn't like. Two people from our table order the same steak but one ordered the big one and other the small. Both came out the same size. A member of our party pointed this out to the waitress and she said she'd check. Bill comes and the server comes out saying "oh I did put two big steak sizes in so I mean you were right" type of things she did NOT offer to take it back and change it she just said "you can just take it off my tip if you want" as IF someone would say "yes let me know that, I'll take it off your tip" I thought it was a cheap was to fix that situation. That made me a little mad how the waitress handled that. I had been in the service industry and I would not have handled that like she did. I would have went to change it due to my mistake. My Bride and Son surprised me for my birthday with a trip to Auburn Indiana. I've wanted to visit the Auburn, Cord, Dusenberg (ACD) museum for the longest time. The building has a very comfortable feeling. The staff is not only professional but very personable. Our server Lisa, is a helpful and magnificent individual. This was an over $300 disappointment!! We made reservations for a Friday night, not that it was needed. We also made note it was a special celebration, not that it mattered because it wasn't acknowledged until we were walking out the door. The food was extremely bland. The Wagyu steak I ordered was over cooked and not tender. The other two steaks ordered were served to the wrong people, as they were requested cooked two different ways. My husband and I have been traveling the US for the past 4 months now, and before that have lived and travelled all over the world. We love food and like to try unique spots wherever we are, high end, hole in wall, we will try anything! So when we heard about Auburn City Steak House we had to give it a shot while visiting friends in the area. Auburn is such a small town, but it has a lot of history and charm, and is definitely up and coming. We were so excited about the food that I didn't get any photos of the interior of the place, but if you're into history and preserving heritage buildings you'll love this spot! Be sure to ask the owner about the renovation and history, it's fascinating, and they've done a great job of restoring and preserving it. So, the restaurant is fairly new and we'd read some of the bad reviews, but I'd also heard that they recently hired a new executive chef and that he really knows his stuff, so it was worth a try. I am so glad we gave this place a chance! The food was outstanding. For appetizers you're spoilt for choice. We started with the scallops and millionaires bacon, and I'm still thinking about them both the next day. In between we had the Greek salad (perhaps my favorite salad of all time - if you like sweet, try it) and the French onion soup. For mains we had the rib eye with blue cheese and bacon topping. I'm ashamed to say that I could only finish about a third of it, I was stuffed by this point, and it was huge! The cheese topping is rich and intense, I loved it, but would recommend saving it for when you're extra hungry! For dessert ( yeah I know, we still got dessert, what can I say?!) we split the bread pudding. Now my husband is a self proclaimed bread pudding connoisseur and VERY picky when it comes to bread pudding... he's eaten a LOT of it and he voted this THE BEST BREAD PUDDING he has ever had! We met the chef and this is his personal creation. Our waitress Anne was super sweet and helpful, the owner, Bob was full of knowledge about the history of the place, and if you get a chance to catch Cord be sure to pick his brains about wine, he is so extremely knowledgeable!
