Years of loyalty, but no response after X-rays and insurance claim I've been a loyal patient of Dr. Joanne Butler for many years and always appreciated her care, but this recent experience has completely changed my view. Over a month ago, I went in for a maintenance visit and a crown had broken. She explained that she would submit the claim to my insurance and, based on coverage, either repair it or refer me elsewhere. She also took X-rays and an impression for a bite guard. Since that appointment, I've called several times and have not received a single return call. (On one occasion I managed to speak with Ed her husband/office manager but still no callback) Its extremely disappointing to be ignored after so many years as a patient. If the problem was that my insurance didn't pay enough, that should have been discussed honestly--not avoided. What's worse is that X-rays and other services were billed to my insurance, yet there has been no communication, plan, or care provided. Butler bills for services not performed and then refuses to see you if you do not pay a bogus co pay. I had the bloodiest cleaning services done in June and needed a root canal and crown. I had the root canal done by an endodontist in July and then it took months for her to finally get back to me and booked an appt for late Sept. When I arrived at the office, she had an elderly man as her reception who is actually her husband tell me that I had to pay out of pocket $1050, or she cannot see me. My insurance requires no copayment as she is a in network provider with my insurance co. I told him I want a copy of the bill at that time I seen she billed and was paid for service that I did not receive. I contacted my ins co and filed a grievance against her. I have also read on google, Healthgrades and other sights of other patients with similar bogus experiences with her. I wish I would have read her ratings before going to her. When Dr Butler found out how much my insurance was paying her ( apparently not enough) she just had her husband/receptionist stop returning my calls. My insurance company told me how unethical this is and they are filing a complaint against this office!!!!! Please be careful. Joanne Buttler and her husband are scammers. Joanne told me I needed a post for a root canal, knowing she was not supposed to perform the procedure on me because I had an infection and my tooth needed to be pulled out. She told me the procedure would cost me $300 cash. I paid her $300 cash and her husband gave me this bogus receipt notice that said -300 with no description and tried to make it look like I had a previous balance which I didn't. That was so she could submit a bill to my insurance on top of the payment she already received and when I asked for a proper receipt she made up all these excuses of why she couldn't issue me a proper receipt. I kept coming back to the office and calling she told her husband not to open the door and to stop taking my calls. I called the police they said it was a civil matter so I will be taking her to court for malpractice. She hurt me so bad I was in excruciating pain. PLEASE STAY away from these crooks. I was in a lot of pain over the weekend so first thing Monday morning I drove to Dr. Butler and they were able to see me right away without an appointment I found out I needed a root canal and it was a complicated procedure so she referred me to a root canal specialist I was able to get a root canal done the same day and be relieved of the pain I'm very satisfied with her service. DON'T WALK...RUN FROM DR. BUTLER & HER STAFF! I do not take critical reviews lightly....especially when it pertains to a health professional...but this dental practice's behavior was so poor, so heartless and so inexcusable that it all needs to be said. The horrible behavior involves the entire team, Dr. Butler, dental assistant Ed and front desk manager Maggie. They are not the dream team....they are the nightmare team. I just moved to Roslyn and needed to find a dentist for an emergency (broken tooth). I called my dental insurance company and was referred to Dr. Joanne Butler (166 Park Ave. Manhasset, NY). I called and made an appointment for 4/28/20. When I walked into the office the doctor was sitting at the front desk on the phone yelling at and threatening an apparent employee on the telephone. She said loudly over and over, "If you don't come to work, I'm calling NY State to cut off your unemployment!" Then she hung up and within 2 minutes was yelling at her dental assistant Ed for walking from the back room to the front room to give me a clip board to fill out a new patient form. She said very loudly, "You do not walk up front to the patient. Let them come to the window!" I had no issue, during this COVID-19 crisis, with the Dr. expecting her staff to come to work & to follow office safety protocol....but yelling in front of a new patient? I told myself that she was probably just a mad genius:-) So the doctor gave me temporary relief by removing a portion of my broken tooth and suggested I get a crown. She promised to apply with my insurance company and to get back to me as soon as my insurance company responded because she knew that I was now living with a partial tooth containing a loose filling that I could not chew on and that caused me all-day discomfort. So far so good. Then the nightmare began. After hearing nothing for 3 weeks and feeling tooth discomfort 24-7, I began to leave voice messages for Dr. Butler, 3 in total...but no return call for 10 days. Then, on June 4th, I called my insurance company and was astonished to hear that Dr. Butler received the approval for my crown 2 1/2 weeks earlier on May 18th but never told me about it. From this point, I left 3 additional voice messages for Dr. Butler over a period of 2 weeks. Maggie the front desk manager eventually called me and, with no apology, explained that she had been "too busy to call back". She also did not apologize for Dr. Butlers failure to inform me that my crown had been approved by my insurance company. Maggie then attempted to set up my appointment to fix my tooth. She named a date that was more than a month later, in late July. She obviously had no concern for my discomfort and had no interest in making amends for the failures of her office. I balked, so she set my appointment for 6/22/20 @ 5 pm. A few hours prior my appointment. Ed the dental assistant called me and said that Dr. Butler needed to cancel my appointment because my insurance company "approved your crown but will not pay us a penny". He directly blamed Maggie for "not noticing and correcting this problem a month ago". It made no sense....but Ed promised to speak with Dr. Butler and promised to email me the next day with a solution. He lied and never got back to me. I then called my insurance company and was told 3 times by 3 different staff members including a manager that my dentist was not being being truthful with me. They were dismayed and suggested that I file a formal complaint with them because they theorize that my dentist wanted more than the $478 + my cash co-payment that they would have received for the procedure. They emphasized that once one of their member dentists signs a contract they receive a payment schedule so they know upfront exactly how much they will be paid for every approved procedure and they are therefore ethically bound to perform the procedure because the dentist knows that reneging causes long delays and patient suffering. Apparently the wonderful Dr. Butler feels that she is above it all and not bound by ethics or by contracts. I left messages for 3 days (with no return calls, of course) and finally got in touch with Ed on 6/25/20. He promised that Dr. Butler would call my insurance company the very next day and get back to me immediately. That was yet another lie. I've been leaving additional voice messages for Dr. Butler (4 more in total) for the past 2 weeks...pleading for some empathy considering I've been suffering for more than 2 1/2 months waiting for this crown. I've yet to hear back from Dr. Butler or her crack team. So I finally gave up on Dr. Butler, filed a formal complaint with my insurance company and am searching for a new dentist. The only other recourse that I have is to warn people that there is no replacement for honesty, for professionalism, for heart and for empathy, especially in the health field....and Team Butler has none of these attributes. I had an awful experience with this dental office and would not recommend it to anyone. I went to the office just to fix a broken front crown. Before they asked me why I'm there, the assistant insisted she take xrays of the full mouth. I told her that all I need is to have the front crown fixed but she insisted that the dentist won't see me unless she does full-mouth xrays. Had she told me she would take 18 xrays, I would have refused as ionic radiation from xrays is not recommended to people who are not in the best of health. A few would have been fine, but not 18; the least she could have done was tell me ahead what she wanted to do. I haven't had xrays done in a while but what if I had? She should ASK first if xrays had been done recently because radiation is cumulative & x-rays can be transferred from another dentist's office. The doctor came in then, all rushed and told me she didn't have time because they squeezed me in. Why? I made the appointment ahead of time. She then proceeded to give me a horrific filling in front to cover the broken crown, which I did need, but didn't even bother to match the shade at all, so that the "tooth" looks 3 shades yellower than the other front crown and significantly shorter. Just because my teeth don't look great doesn't mean I have low standards; I just have an autoimmune disease that ruins my teeth despite my best efforts. What poor advertising for her work.. why would I go back for other work? To make things worse, they proceeded to give me a lot of trouble when I requested the xrays. The insurance pays for them and they are mine by law. In order to email them to me, they charged me $50. I would highly recommend that you steer clear of this dental office. read more

This dentist left a bad taste in my mouth. I scheduled an appointment for xrays and a cleaning. When i arrived they took xrays only and i never even saw or spoke to the dentist when i was told she didn't have time to see me for a cleaning. So i scheduled for a cleaning the next week and unfortunately was sick when the appointment came up so i called to reschedule. The receptionist told me that to reschedule i would be charged a $75 fee because i couldn't make the appointment. Seriously! Do yourself and go somewhere else. The first time I went here, I felt like Dr. Butler was very abrasive, no bed side manners. My teeth cleaning was very painful, I thought it was just me. My son and husband went on different days and said the same thing, she's rough. I decided to give her a second chance at my next appointment six months later, she was more gentle and a little nicer. The third time I went, she was so aggressive and I felt like she was picking away at my teeth and gums to the point that she had to stop in the middle of my cleaning because I had to spit out so much blood. When I got home, I was still spitting out blood. I'm the type of person who likes to floss twice a day and brush my teeth three times a day. I'm just trying to help out the next family who needs to find a dentist. Plus, she charges $75 if you need to cancel for some reason and wants 2 business days notice. Her staff seems to change quite often and her assistant could not even do my x-rays properly. She took three times to get it right. I don't know why she has such contradicting reviews here. By far the WORST DENTAL EXPERIENCE of my life. In short, Dr. Butler pulled down her face mask under her chin to talk with me after my cleaning. She was two feet away and this made me very uncomfortable. This office NEVER answers their phone. I called them over a period of 20 days asking for a simple referral as instructed by by orthodontist and my insurance company. Initially I received a call back two days after my first message. I called days later I was told it would be sent to my insurance company by the end of the business day and here I am 20 days later as I write this and still no referral, no communication and no answer or response from the five pleasant messages that I have left for this "doctor". There is no reasonable explanation for this. I wish I had read all of her reviews earlier and I found that a Joanne M. Butler DDS was sued for dental malpractice prior to this. I assume that this is the same Joanne M. Butler working from the home in Manhasset, New York. Please read all of her reviews and judge for yourself. Seems she did exactly what she did to me to others. I had asked to be the first appointment that morning due to my dealings with Covid prior to this. This is a very small dental office with what appears to be one treatment room and the office is part of a private residence. There was mask on the patient being seen upon my arrival, nor was there one on her child who was running around. I was immediately led into that room for treatment after she left. There was no ventilation as promised and the large window remained closed,. After my cleaning (which was fine) Dr. Butler pulled her mask under her chin to talk to me while she was two feet from my face. This made me very uncomfortable. This doctor has no bedside manner and argued with me about how much I floss. She told me that I am a candidate for Invisalign braces and offered her services. I knew that I was absolutely not a candidate as confirmed by an orthodontic consultant earlier that day and prior to that day. Once I explained that I had picked an orthodontist fore my treatment, her manner changed and I was hurried out of the office. I called later that day to ask for a simple referral to an oral surgeon and that's where my nightmare began. There is no rhyme or reason as to why this office would act in this way. They have not explained why they not only never sent the referral (as promised) but I am at as loss as to understand why. It makes no sense and after reading reviews I see that others have said the same thing. I have been a license New York State investigator for 28 years and my recall is pretty good. There was no misunderstanding that her office was going to send in the referral 17 days ago and since then zero communication. I can only surmise that she was upset that I decided to use a reputable orthodontist as well as an oral surgeon instead of her. Still, no reason for such unprofessionalism. My messages outlined the pain that I was in and I pretty much begged them to call me or my insurance company to clarify what was happening. Nothing!!! Once last piece of advice, if you have received similar treatment from any dental office, please call your insurance company and file a formal complaint. She is very nice and calm. However she is very limited on the procedures she does. She does not do root canals or extractions, the only thing I have seen her do is cleaning. She is very delicate but if you need a serious dental procedure to be done, and your in pain she is not the dentist your looking for. Another problem I had with her office is that no one ever answers the phone, even on the days when they are in office. I have been a client of Dr. Butler for the past 3 years and my experience with her has been great! After years of experiencing a total of four different dentists, meeting Dr. Butler has been heaven sent. In the past with other dentists, I had to deal with hour long waits in the waiting room, rude receptionists and to top it off, dentists that I feel just do the bare minimum and try to move you along. On my first visit, not only did her staff greeted me like family but the wait was no more than 5 minutes. Meeting with Dr. Butler was amazing. She is very motherly. After she reviewed my X-rays, she intricately described and explained to me what is it I need to do to keep my teeth and gums healthy. She was very patient with me and her cleaning was very thorough and non rushed. After the cleaning, she then described to me the best way for me to maintain and keep my teeth and gums healthy and clean. She doesn't do root canals or extractions but she will recommend very refutable places. I must say my teeth has remained healthy and clean because of her. I highly recommend. read more

Three stars for the satisfactory work for me and my kids. Would have been five stars except she wouldn't waive the $75 missed appointment fee. My three year old had her first dentist appt on a Saturday morning. That morning there was a powerful thunderstorm and my daughter was distraught and refused to leave the house. I called to reschedule and got the answering machine. I left a message explaining the situation and never heard back. When I rescheduled the appt a few days later, no mention of a fee. Now, right before the rescheduled appt date, I get a call stating I have to pay the $75 fee. I explain the situation again, including the fact that, had someone picked up the phone or called me back after I left the message that morning, and told me there would be a fee that would not be waived, I would have forced my daughter to go, but since no one picked up or called me back I did not have that option.
