We have had a wonderful experiance at Joe Machens Toyota (Josh Benson our Salesman and Greg was the Sales Manager). We did not even purchase a car from them YET!!! For the last few weeks we have been waiting for a special 2022 Highlander to come in. They not only put our name on it while we were waiting, but they held it for 2 more days after it came in. The deal they worked out with us was very fair the FIRST time. However after my wife seen the actual vehicle, she decided she did not want to go with that color. They gave us no problems at all about it. While there I seen a 2019 Tacoma that I thought I wanted really bad. Josh and Greg again worked out a very fair deal for me. After I drove this vehicle, I realized it did not have all the equipment I wanted. Then again they gave me no problems at all. They also have the Best Cappacino in town. I did not feel pressured as I expected to by anyone. All staff, Front desk and Sales Desk treated us very very well on and off the telephone. They are looking for other vehicles now for us. We will not hesitate to go back and reccomend them to others. read more

I purchased a vehicle from Joe Machens Toyota last Saturday. During the sales process, I was told the vehicle was mechanically sound and had passed the dealership's inspection, which gave me confidence that it was safe and ready to drive. After looking the vehicle over myself, I had no reason to believe otherwise. Unfortunately, during the two-hour drive home, I began hearing a loud noise coming from the right front wheel area. After having the vehicle inspected, I learned that the right front wheel bearing is failing and needs to be replaced. The repair estimate is over $800, and I have been advised that the vehicle is not safe to continue driving until the issue is corrected. What concerns me most is that a vehicle represented as having passed the dealership's inspection and being mechanically sound developed a serious safety-related issue almost immediately after purchase. This problem was never disclosed to me prior to the sale. When I contacted the dealership yesterday, I was told to take the vehicle to my local Toyota dealership and that Joe Machens Toyota would cover the repair costs. Based on that assurance, I scheduled an appointment to have the work completed. However, when I called back this morning to confirm the arrangement, I was told they would not be paying for the repair after all. They also declined to repair the vehicle themselves or offer any assistance in resolving the situation. I understand that used vehicles can sometimes develop unexpected issues. What I do not understand is how a vehicle that was represented as mechanically sound and inspected by the dealership could have a failing wheel bearing severe enough to become obvious during the drive home. The change in position regarding the promised repair assistance only added to my disappointment. Based on my experience, I would strongly recommend that anyone purchasing a vehicle from this dealership obtain an independent inspection and get any promises regarding vehicle condition or repair assistance in writing before signing the paperwork. read more

Blatant bait-and-switch by Joe Machens Toyota. They offered me my full asking price of $31,500 on Facebook Marketplace for my truck, contingent on inspection. I specifically asked if this was just a setup to get me to drive three hours one way for a lowball offer. They assured me it wasn't. When I arrived, I sat in clear view of my truck the entire time. One guy came out, stood back, took five quick pictures of the exterior, and walked away. That was the extent of their so-called "inspection." Yet the acquisition manager came out claiming they "ran it through the shop" and it needed a control arm and brand new tires-- which is completely false, as I watched it the whole time and I laughed as I told him it has brand new tires on it. When I called him on it, he admitted he was "going off a second party" and then claimed their "online algorithm" dropped the value of my truck by $2,000 in the four days since we spoke. Super long read, but please read to save yourself the headache from buying from this horribly ran dealership. Here are just some of the issues we had - 1. They sold us the car without actually having the title. Despite us calling and showing up multiple times in the weeks before our temporary tags were due to expire, we did not find out that they didn't have the title until 3 days before the tags expired. 2. I was promised 3 days before the temp tags expired that they had filed for a duplicate title because they had lost the original and it would take 7-10 days. 3 weeks go by and I show back up (due to having calls unreturned) and I was able to speak to the GM Mike who let me know I had been lied to and a duplicate hadn't been filed for. He promised to get the paperwork done himself within 2 days. (once again was not done by that time). 3. After 2 months of not receiving the title we decided to return the car and unwind the deal. 4. Prior to sale the salesman let it slip that this car had previously been sold and returned with the previous owner threatening to sue the dealership (2018 blue jaguar f-pace) be warned if you are interested in this car - Carfax will not have us listed as owners due to never being able to receive the title and register but we had the car for 2 months and drove it over 1,000 miles and they are now trying to sell the car for nearly $2,000 over what we paid. 5. Prior to buying the car we were in a verbal negotiation over price and before we signed anything or gave any permission they ran our credit twice. This was after we told them to not run our credit until we came to an agreement. 6. Part of our negotiated deal was we would pay extra for them to install remote start. Once again it took many phone calls and us showing up to find out that they were unable to install the remote start. 7. When we bought the car I specifically asked if the inspection had been done and I was told it was, only for them to call 2 days later saying it hadn't been done and I needed to bring the car back in. 8. Everyone was pretty unprofessional. When I finally was able to speak to the GM Mike (2 months into this mess) without introducing himself or asking my name he greeted me by saying "I wish you were the only person we had made mad" and proceeded to tell me this was an issue with many of the cars on their lot (apparently someone had lost a file of titles). 9. They will not return a phone call. No matter how many times you call, no matter how many times they tell you they will, and no matter how many times you leave your name and number. I had to resort in showing up in person to get any answers. 10. I was 50/50 buyer of the car and they were unable to find the car/information under my name/number or even associate the car with me. This caused some serious doubt to whether they did the paperwork correctly. I will say things they did to fix the situation - 1. let us drive a rental while we could not drive our car (due to expired tags). 2. Refunded us for the remote start (since they could not uphold their end of the deal). 3. When we returned the car they refunded us our down payment and shortly after our loan was paid off by them (they were legally obligated to). Overall, a horrible experience and I wouldn't recommend this dealership to anyone. We bought the car 9/13/25 our temp tags expired 10/12/25 and we returned the car 11/4/25 at the time we returned the car they still did not have the title - I waited until we got all of our refunds and our loan was paid off before I wrote this review. read more

I was a co-signer for my daughter on a vehicle purchased at Machens Toyota. To state it simply, this has been the most nightmarish experience I have ever had purchasing a car. I was not pleased that she was working with a Machens store in the first place. A previous purchase at the Ford store in Columbia left me making payments and paying insurance for over three months on a vehicle that they sold without having possession of the title. That vehicle sat, unable to be driven, until I was finally provided with a title so that I could pay my sales tax, my fees and penalties and legally put it on the road. To say I was not impressed with the services would be an understatement. Now, despite my better judgement, I found myself in bed with the Machens Machine yet again. My daughter had been happily working with a salesman in at the store who understood her circumstances and seemed to be working with her specific needs and financial situation in mind. When she went to meet with the gentleman she had been working with, he was otherwise involved. She wanted to wait for the original salesman but found herself poached by someone who certainly could have cared less about her circumstances. My daughter had been working with the previous salesman on a particular vehicle Once taken over by the other salesman, things began to go south. The vehicle originally inquired about had mysteriously disappeared and we were forcefully pushed toward something else. When we test drove the vehicle, the interior reeked of smoke and there were questionable stains on the upholstery. The salesman very pointedly told my daughter that there was nothing else that he could offer her. Being in somewhat of a bind, my daughter felt that she had no other choice. The purchased car developed a knock less than 72 hours after the purchase. We were able to cancel the financing because the financer was needing additional Information but we're struggling to get the down payment returned. The fact that they didn't try to put lipstick on the pig should have been a screaming siren indicating that the whole deal was going to be as stinky as the car. It was terrible. It appeared clean but once the AC started running, it was very apparent that the previous owner was a chain smoker with a very limited tobacco budget. It didn't appear that anyone made any effort whatsoever to even mask that aroma. I suspect it was already known that the unit was not mechanically sound and not worth the time. I know some dealerships identify some used cars as "turds" and bonuses are awarded if a salesman manages to off-load a turd. Terrible experience. Stay away. I was in contact with the sales manager, Andrew McWhorter. I asked him about all of the costs associated with purchasing a new 2024 Sienna and he told me it would just be MSRP and then whatever my tax rate is and no other costs added. He had a sales guy call me and said they have to add a "ceramic exterior coating" and "windshield treatment". The exterior coating would be $1,999 and the windshield treatment would be $1,499. Both the sales guy and Andrew admitted these are bogus charges with no value added whatsoever. It is purely a way to make as much money as possible from customers on high demand vehicles - all while telling Toyota corporate that they are selling the cars at MSRP. He lied and wasted my time. Most of all he tried to take away the deposit and deal we had just agreed upon because he was scared I would write a bad review. This is what I hate about car dealerships and why they have a bad reputation. Shame on you Andrew McWhorter. I work in sales also. Trash. First free oil change, they told me it would be "real quick". We sat for 2 hours(!). Unacceptable. Today they called me to say it was ready. Sweet. I show up and they say "oh. The oil change is done but it'll be a few more minutes on the computer recall". One hour and 20 minutes later I go up there furious and she says "I'm just waiting on the paperwork now. Have a Prius for sale, had an $11,500 offer that I'm signing papers on from a different dealership. Machens calls me back asks for photos, I send them. Ten minutes later guy calls back, offers $12-12.5k. There's some light body damage on the car and a couple indicator lights on, not big deals, as we've gotten 11.5 and 10.5 offered by other dealerships. I go to explain the damage to the man. He cuts me off "no no no, you're not understanding, I said 12,000, maybe 12.5 but the bumper concerns me." I insist on not wanting to be lowballed if I drive up there. He reassures me, stating he needs cars on the lot. I agree, switch my family switches our schedule around so I can drive 2.5 hours to Columbia a few days later. I am very disappointed with the service I receive anytime I come here. I didn't know how good I had it with the Toyota in Escondido CA until I came here and had another service center to compare my service to. Only time I have ever dropped a vehicle off at 7am for an oil change and routine inspection and have it take until after 3 to pick it up. Poor communication anytime you contact them. Spent over 20 minutes on hold and they didn't answer the phone until I emailed them via facebook and asked for an update on my vehicle. Shuttle service is mismanaged, only has one driver and only runs every 30 minutes. I don't want to come back but I have Toyota Care Plus for another 20,000 miles. I may have to get my service while visiting family out of State. read more

We bought our 2017 Highlander here new (was a difficult negotiating process but that's another story) this year and feel preyed upon and betrayed by their service department. After multiple encounters with them, I feel that this is what they do to all of their customers. Story 1: My wife takes the new car in because two of the tires keep losing air. Matt R at the service department greets her, proceeds to tell her she needs to buy a new tire. She says no thanks please put the spare on and will take it to get a second opinion. She being a lone woman proceeds to get pressured and YELLED at when resisting this purchase bringing her to tears. Big man to yell at my 95 lb wife when I'm not around. Assuming this is a common disgusting sales tactic to prey on lone women and elderly. Story 2: Take minivan into service for an oil change. They say the battery is dying after a routine test, will go on me any moment. Think it odd since battery is only a couple years old. I decline so I can go to interstate where I bought it and it is a 5 year battery. Experience high pressure sales tactic guilting me into feeling I will leave my family stranded which I can better by shelling out $150. Arrive at Interstate who proceed to show me physically with several different tests the battery is as good as the day I bought it. This place is a nest of snakes who use high pressure sales tactics to prey on your loved ones. Do yourself a favor and buy a car from the Jeff City dealership and get service from ANYWHERE else. read more

Dude. Screw this place. Honestly. Back in 2018 I bought a brand new 2019 Toyota Corolla. Sam was my sales rep and he was honestly great. We settled on a monthly payment I felt good about and I was excited to be buying my first new car. Then we got back to the back with the finance managers. Both of the ones we talked to sucked. We were in the back for 2-2.5 hours because we didn't want to buy the extended warranty. I've had Toyota's all my life and know that you don't need that warranty. My payment went up almost $40 a month and honestly they wouldn't let us leave until we got it. TWO HOURS THEY WOULDNT LET US SIGN THE PAPERWORK UNLESS WE AGREED TO A $2-3K warranty. I didn't get my new car until 10 pm and I was there immediately after work at 5:30 pm. I had already test drive and was basically there to just sign the paperwork. 5 hours seems excessive for that. Fast forward to today. My husband and I were exploring options to trade one of our sedans in for an SUV (growing family and all that). We left, explored options at another dealership, and came back the same day. Should tell you we were pretty serious about making a deal. First of all they lowballed my car like $3500 what KBB said the trade in value was for. That's fine. But they kept pushing us to sign a paper. I say they because apparently (according to his manager later) Sean said we weren't serious about making a deal. He called in some douchebag "sales rep who has been here for a long time" (his words not mine) who insulted my husband several time (said he was an idiot for buying a Kia... we all have our preferences). He was pushing us SO HARD and just made us feel uncomfortable. We asked to deal with Sean again and instead they brought another manager. Very pushy for no reason. We told them what we were willing to do and it was "very likely if you got that price we'd walk away with the new car" and instead we basically got told that we were idiots for wanting that. Really wanted that car but honestly this was the second time that I've cried out of pure frustration and anger. Why would I give a business to a place that has done that to me twice now? We went to look at used Toyota yesterday. They sales staff was very friendly and helpful UNTIL we said that we needed time to look at another dealership and time to think also. Then they became very insistent and told us that that if we left for an hour the car would probably be gone! They were pressuring us terribly. We ended up going back and buying from them because it was the right car for us but we do NOT feel it was the right dealership for us!!! In that time that we were gone we checked university subaru. What a difference! The dealer there was very friendly and did not pressure. He told us about one of the downsides of the car we looked at. When we told him the car was not right for us he said he understood and that if there was anything else he could do for us to please give him a call. He wished us luck! We would have definitely preferred to buy from him. He was kind and seemed very honest. Overall I believe the dealership is good. However I had Dylan as a salesman. This guy is fresh into the car business.... had to leave and multiple times to go ask questions. Tried to run my credit stuff before giving me a trade in price on my old car.. scatter brained. The other guys in the dealership seemed knowledgeable and polite. I swear if Dylan called me "bro" one more time, or said "I'm trying" one more time I was gonna go off. I bought a used Toyota Camry from this dealership in 2020 and totally agree that the salesman was great but the financing experience was awful. I will NEVER buy another car from here, but had to keep coming back back for 'prepaid' service. Every time was so stressful- I never knew how much I'd be charged, and whether service would be covered. They make it impossible to navigate the 'prepaid' service information online. For my own piece of mind, I've finally started going to a different dealership an hour away but at least I don't have a near panic attack when I need an oil change anymore. read more

I would not purchase another vehicle from Joe Machens. Buyer beware - make sure to check all your paperwork. Don't depend on what you were told. The ending price of my purchase was way above the sticker price, many thousand dollars more. I understand they are in business to make money. I also understand there are additional charges when purchasing a car besides the purchase price. What I was charged is excessive, beyond measure. I still like the vehicle that I purchased, but I honestly feel the transaction was not fair at all. Contacted the dealer and got a phone call back. Replied, for review of paperwork, and haven't heard anything since. Very disappointed in this transaction. Purchased a 2016 Ford Edge Sport. Inquired about an oil light concern on the Carfax report. Becky Lynch indicated the light wasn't turned off at the last oil change. I had my dealer pull the Oasis report to find that what really happened was the engine was found to be 4.5 quarts low on oil. A very short time later, the cylinder heads had to be replaced to resolve the issue. Something that was very clearly listed on the paperwork (being 4.5 quarts low on oil when in for the light and then the cylinder head replacement) as the repair was performed at Joe Machen's Ford. This was never disclosed to me. I was originally told I could return the vehicle if it wasn't "everything Becky said it was." The tune changed when I pushed the issue. I was referred to Luke Stephen who was not willing to help and failed to return phone calls when he said he would. You form your own opinion of this situation based on this information. Made a service appointment for right when they opened at 7:30am on a Thursday. After my vehicle sat there all day I finally called them at about 4pm to check on the status and was told they needed to get a part, but could have it there the following day, so I should just leave my vehicle there overnight and they would fix it Friday. Would have liked them to call me earlier, rather than me having to call them at the end of the day, but okay - it's just one extra day. Friday comes and goes. I hear nothing. Finally call at 4pm to see if it is ready yet. After getting transferred to my service advisor's VM, finally get her on the phone. Here is the rundown of explanations I received from the same employee on why my vehicle was not ready: -We were overbooked today and didn't get to it. -The person that looked at your vehicle yesterday called in sick today and we like to have the same person that diagnosed the problem make the repair. -We forgot. Why didn't I get a cal about this earlier? You know, so I could have my vehicle back if they weren't going to get to it anyway? "Well, I was just about to call you." "Uh, the 'guys' just told me" Look, I get this is a big dealership. But, three days for a simple repair, and never once receiving a status update call from my service advisor is frustrating. I would have had my vehicle instead of it sitting on their lot for 2 full days. Now I have to make arrangements to be without my vehicle for a third day the following week. I don't recommend the service department. My parents have been going to Machens for years and insist that I only buy Toyotas. Since I moved back here as an adult, I've been taking my Prius and my husband's RAV-4 to Joe Machens Toyota to get serviced. Since moving here over the summer, I have probably spent $1k on services and repairs. The plastic underbody on my Prius and my husband's RAV-4 have been popping off (a fault of Toyotas, I can only assume). Well about two weeks ago my husband's popped off and we took it to Machens to be fixed. It cost him in the range of $15-$30. The same sort of piece on my car popped off and I went in today to get it fixed and before they took it back, they said it would be $100 to do a body diagnosis. At this point, my advisor hadn't even looked at me yet. I patiently explained that my husband had the same issue with his Toyota and they fixed it for much less. She explained (a little pre-emptively defensively, might I add) that they aren't trying to rip me off- that they just need to cover their costs. So, I had to pry- "So, is that the max cost it will be? Could it be less? Or is that a flat fee?" She said it's the max. To which I inquired, "will you update me while it's back there if it's looking like it's going to be on the higher end. If it's taking more time, or needs extra special work?" She replies they wouldn't. They would just not allow it to go over $100. I told her, I'm a student, my husband got it fixed for much less, I've spent $1k there over the past few months. I'll just go to Subaru. It's just sad they will help me and you all won't. I was already upset that both of our Toyotas have had the same issue. But this interaction definitely made me never want to shop there for a car again. My husband and I will both need new cars soon. I understand that people have bad days and that prices sometimes need to change, but I gave her every opportunity to explain to me, and to apologize. and to help. And she just didn't care for me enough to take the time. I'm the customer. I shouldn't have to deal with this. read more

I took my car in to get the rear brakes replaced. $122 minimum for labor, okay. Service manager calls, says that they will also need to flush and replace brake fluid. Now I will admit, this next part is on me. Phone is breaking up and having difficulty understanding each other. I finally break through and tell him to go ahead. This entire process of replacing rear brake pads and break fluid takes 45 minutes. I know because I received a text when it was finished. When it was all said and done, I was charged $220 for 45 minutes of labor. Just to be clear this was just the labor and does not include the parts. They claimed that it only went so quickly because a master technician had worked on it, which is absurd, this is basic repair. This is a prime reason why some dealerships are a racket. Everything is set by "corporate" and non negotiable. A local garage would have the common sense to know that a 10 minute addition to a 30 minute job doesn't equate to an additional $100 in labor. It's the kinda thing that makes you feel used and taken advantage of when things are done. I can't imagine that the service manager or the mechanic would have been so "that's how it is" about it if they were in my situation. I've been trying to get a code cut key for 5 days now. The machine was broken on the Friday I needed it. They said the machine would come in on Monday, but it never did. Now it came on on Tuesday, but they are having trouble with the software for cutting the keys. They have not made any effort to contact another Toyota dealer to see if they can get a key cut for me while they try to figure their stuff out. Once they figure it out, they will probably try to charge me the full price as well. They obviously need develop a backup plan for this. read more

Good service. Had my vehicle in an out in less then an hour for a oil change. Told me everything that needed to be done and backed it all up with showing me physical proof. Excellent customer service. Will definitely take my car there again. read more

Got here at 3:15 for a 3:45 appointment..... to see a 2015 Highlander. The salesman informs me the car is missing and they can't find it. He knew I was driving 2 hours to look at it and no one bothered to call to let me know the vehicle is missing......He then try's to sell me a new vehicle. After 2 hours.... I know, shame on me for sticking around, but salesman made me believe they were going to make me deal since they couldn't find the vehicle I came to see. I'm now going to leave and they now are looking for the car again. Well they didn't find the car they did offer me a new car(more $) and anther that has over 20k more miles... On a positive note their waiting area is nice. read more

The most efficient auto maintenance we've come across while traveling the US over the last 2 1/2 years! We pulled up to a window that immediately rolled up to let us in, were greeted by a young man with an iPad in hand, who checked us in, and 3 hours later, we came back, walked in, and had paid for our service within minutes. Our truck looks and sounds wonderful! Highly recommend! read more
