Most recently I had their espresso tonic, which I'm afraid I can't recommend because it literally tasted like the barista poured a shot of espresso over flat seltzer water. I should have known something was off when I saw the drink color but I ended up not returning it. It must have been a mistake because it was undrinkable. I often stay at hotels in the vicinity and it's the most convenient coffee place for me, so I'm glad to support whenever I'm in town. read more

Walked in an it was somewhat a full house with customers working on their laptops. The staff was nice and knowledgeable of what was offered. I got a decaf iced mocha latte w/ an extra pump of mocha. This has been one of my favorite weekend spots to get work done. The big windows, wood-focused décor, and nicely spaced tables make it a comfortable place to settle in. I also love that there's a full bar - it makes for a seamless transition from my afternoon work grinds to an evening bubbly celebration! I appreciate that they always rotate a seasonal menu and include non-coffee options like matcha or golden lattes. I've tried quite a few of the seasonal lattes over the years--they're always decent, though not standout. Food here follows the same pattern: never bad, but not especially memorable. Recently I have noticed that i need to watch out for upcharges. I recently ordered a latte with two syrups (modifying a seasonal drink) and swapped whole milk for oat milk, and it came to $9 before tax. Service can be hit or miss - sometimes very friendly, other times clearly overwhelmed. A fun bonus is that they sell local candles that are actually fantastic. This was the first time I've been back to Oak House in like 2 years and had a pretty disappointing experience tbh. I think it's definitely a great place to work, but the drink quality wasn't that good. I got the s'mores latte (marshmallow latte with mocha), which was a seasonal special. It was terribly sweet and I couldn't finish it; I had also asked for it hot, but received an iced drink. Given the high caliber of coffee shops in Durham, I probably won't be coming back here but I do remember it being better in the past. Service was fast but obvs not very attentive. Ambiance is nice, lots of windows, seating, and open space. Absolutely terrible experience. Went here for a beer before the Bulls game on Thursday and we were served the worst beers I've ever had. Both were warm and flat! Apparently their CO2 lines are messed up but they didn't tell us that until after we paid. Stopped by for some chai tea to go. There looked to about 3 people working behind the counter and a few tables were seated as well as about 3 walk ins. Service was good and drinks were made to order so they took about 5 minutes to complete our order. I drink a lot of chai, and my expectations are moderate to high when I walk in locally owned coffee spots ( at least to be better than the place with the green fish lady and cup). And unfortunately this place fell short. I always do almond or non dairy milk. And they did have those options- yay! I walked into a fun coffee spot that looks like college students probably take up all of the tables regularly. It's cozy and relaxed. The area hasn't been very safe the past few times I have gone which has led to me with increased anxiety so it's personally not worth it anymore. We hosted three of our nieces and nephews and their partners here for pre-dinner drinks on a Friday evening at 6:30pm. Derrick served us up some coffee and the nice bottle of champagne for our table! Six glasses and everyone toasted our being together again! Well, I toasted with my espresso but it was good as well! The art work on the walls was definitely unique. I had fun trying to name the untitled pieces. Art should go in a new direction to visit a place never before seen! This qualifies! There wasn't any food but the drinks hit the spot! If you're able to snag a spot, this is a great spot for studying, working, or catching up with friends. Service: The baristas are friendly, and drinks are made quickly! Food: We've tried their different "matcha" lattes (green, purple, and pink), as well as various espresso drinks. We enjoyed the Purple Matcha, which is made with maqui berry powder. However, the Pink Matcha, made with dragon fruit powder, was pretty flavorless and chalky. Their actual matcha was similarly chalky and tasted mostly like milk. We were bigger fans of their coffee, notably their seasonal Blueberry Pancake Latte as well as their White Chocolate Raspberry Mocha. Overall: The Oak House has both great ambiance and drinks. This place was a lifesaver. We were on our way home toward the tail end of a travel-heavy day and were exhausted and thirsty. The Oak House won our business by virtue of being open and slinging caffeine, and it won our praise by doing so well. Nutella lattes were among the seasonal coffee offerings, and they were smooth, refreshing, and delicious. Beyond that, The Oak House is nicely appointed. The woodwork and chalkboard drink lists add old-fashioned charm. While we only glanced at the latter, the selection seemed plentiful. The bar-coffee shop combination doesn't always work (one sometimes suffers for the sake of the other), but The Oak House certainly seemed to have its act together. read more

I admit that I grabbed coffee from here 3-times this week! It's about a half-mile walk to "The Oak House" but it's worth it to get some exercise in along with amazing coffee! The staff is friendly and always welcoming which is a huge plus. The coffee shop is beautiful! One of the most classy I've seen in the area. It's literally a bar -- coffee and alcoholic beverages. Such a rad spot on Main St! If I lived here I would be here all the time. It's got all my favorite things: house-roasted coffee, local craft beers, wines from the best regions of California, Italy, Argentina and more, bar seating, strong wifi, outlets, and parking close by. The staff are so nice and knowledgeable on their products. I really have nothing bad to say about this place. My family and I came here to grab drinks and play some intense family card games. We grabbed the community table in the back, ordered our beverages and the staff brought over a couple jugs of complimentary water for us to share. The background music was at perfect level, the place was bumping but not too crowded for comfort, and all seemed to be really enjoying themselves. My family headed out and I stayed to work for a couple hours, which naturally meant finding the perfect beer to accompany me. The bartenders were hilarious informing me about their beers and giving me taste testers to make sure I found the perfect one. The Starpoint DIPA was amazing but the keg was tapped so I ended up going with a non-local sour. I also got a cold brew to-go for the next morning which was delicious, low in acidity and easy to sip on throughout the morning. Oak House is big on locally sourcing. If I understood correctly, their pastries are from the local bakery Whisk & Rye, the use a local creamery for their milks, and their teas are local. They have live music nights, run groups, tastings and board game nights. It's a great spot to grab coffee and a pastry in the morning, and enjoy drinks with friends at night. I recommend for working, as well. Definitely check this place out, I know I'll be back! read more

This was without a doubt one of the wildest coffee shop experiences I've ever had lol. I was visiting Durham and searching for the best matcha in town. After searching online for "the best matcha in durham", I came across The Oak House. (I say that to say we literally came here for the matcha). I saw via their menu on Yelp that they had several types of matcha (I believe 6 dif types?) AND that they had gf vegan pastries. I was stoked! We got there and I saw immediately that they didn't have any gf vegan pastries. No biggie- I figured they probs ran out? I got up to the counter to order a matcha latte and I saw that the menu (which is hand written- so they def have the ability to change it...) had "matcha" and below it "matcha varieties". After chatting with the cashier, I learn that not only do they not have *regular* matcha, the "matcha variety" they do have is a golden milk latte...which is not at all matcha. Lol. Then I ask what teas they have - bc they have on the menu "tea" and "tea latte"...and they proceed to tell me they don't have any teas... !? and then another employee behind the counter chimes in to say that they do have chai. So I order a chai with soy milk. Which should be a "tea latte" right? Whelp she charged me for the matcha instead which was over $8! And the tea latte is only $4.25 I believe? It ended up being this long back and forth for several minutes bc neither of the employees knew how to refund. And then my friend in line behind me tried to order- and they didn't have cold brew...HAHA. (That's 4 or 5 things that they don't have out of their only like 10 items on the menu?) And instead of giving her her drink for free (to make up for my almost 4 dollars of overcharge) they gave her a 10% discount and handed me some change from their tip jar. By the end of us finally being able to order- there was a huge line behind us. THEN we sat there waiting for a good 10 minutes and my friend still hadn't gotten her drink - so she went up to ask about it and they were totally clueless about it and made it for her right away. The two stars are for the chai bc it was pretty good- and also bc the two employees were pretty nice. It was just quite an unfortunate experience though. I feel like the whole situation could have been avoided by training your employees to be able to refund, UPDATING YOUR MENU daily/as needed when changes are made (or having a large updated note at the register telling customers if an item - or multiple items in this case- is unavailable), being willing to give a complimentary drink to make up for all of the hassle and the overcharge, and having a better system in place for orders (like an automatic order system when you charge the item- instead of having your employees write the order down, bc I think what happened is that the cashier forgot to write my friends order out) Clearly this spot is a hit for a lot of people bc it was packed inside- but def don't go here expecting for your drink to be available haha read more
