Do not go here unless you want to be talked down to and belittled. Went in to buy a new mountain bike and had a $2,000 budget. When I mentioned the bike I liked there was not the color I was looking for, I was told if I care that much about the color maybe this isn't the place for me... the condescending tone and comments were uncalled for and I'm not going to waste money there. There are too many other nice bike shops that will happily help me find the bike I want. I mentioned this to a few people I ride with and was told Joes is known to be a snobby place and has gone downhill over the years. Will not return and will send friends anywhere else. read more

Joe's Bike Shop is incredible, efficient, and helpful - especially for a new biker like me! I had a derailleur issue with my bike - I called ahead to check and see if I needed to make an appointment, and they mentioned I could come right in during business hours. I came in, and was seen / helped immediately by Mike! Mike helpfully explained what happened to my bike (someone vandalized it), how to avoid the issue in the future, very quickly made the fix, and then tested my bike to make sure it was still working. I was honestly dreading coming in and getting my bike fixed, because I was sure I was going to be confused and then end up paying a lot of money. Thankfully, neither was the case. Even as a novice, I felt like Mike explained things clearly without being condescending. I hope I never have bike issues that require a repair in the future, but if they do I will definitely come back to Joe's Bike Shop and to Mike specifically. I live in DC and actually just happen to be in the area but I have been looking for a new bmx bike lately. The stores I checked out in dc up to this point didn't carry them, maybe I was looking in the wrong place, but anyways did a search for a bike shop before I headed back to dc and found this one so decided to give it a try. I got there at 5:15pm and they close at 6, and as soon as I walked in and took a look around for a minute Shannon approached me to offer assistance. I asked if they had any bmx bikes and he let me know they did just get one in and hasn't been built yet, but I took a look at the model online and it looked like just what I was looking for. It was made by a solid bmx company and also had thick tires, which is what I needed, but let him know I live in dc so wasn't sure when I could come back. Shannon said - you know what, if you have some time right now we'll build it for you - right now, no charge! Remember it's like 30 mins before closing. He and another employee dropped what they were doing and did a professional build right in front of me. The bike is awesome, and they showed me all the little ins and outs of it before I left with it. Highly recommend and even worth a drive if you can do it. read more

Great support today at Joe's. I have been searching for a replacement gravel bike since I sold one that was too large for me. I looked into custom built since the supply for bikes continues to be difficult. After calling both Joe's shops yesterday to discuss, I went to Ft Washington to look into their supply. We talked about a lot of bikes as well as the potential of a custom built. Joe walked us through our options. They just received a supply of All-City bikes and happened to have one my size. Joe built the bike after we left & called us to let us know. We came back to the store & Joe let me ride it around the neighborhood. He even leant my wife a bike so she could ride with me. End of the day, we bought the All-City. We need to come back for drop down bars once that supply loosens up. Joe's also gave us a great maintenance schedule for the next 24 months. As an added bonus, he helped us get the bike into a Ford Fusion Hybrid that has the battery in the trunk. Joe took off the wheel for us & helped load it into the car. Home safe & sound. Looking forward to more success with Joe's. This is our 2nd bike from them. My wife bought a Surly last summer & she is real happy with the bike & the service. The team at Joe's is great. read more

I was excited to try Joe's Bike Shop in MT Washington based on its strong local presence and enthusiastic endorsements from colleagues that ride competitively. While I am pleased with the core of the service done to my bicycle, the in-store experience left a poor taste in my mouth during both visits and will prevent me from recommending to any of my friends, particularly those of color or individuals who do not fit into the traditional mould for biking. My initial visit to Joe's was on 6/17. The storefront isn't optimized for shopping- apparel is scattered throughout, fitness nutrition items are not labeled with prices, and bicycles with work orders are dispersed amongst floor models for sale. There is also a sizeable area of floor caved in and marked only by a strip of duct tape. Assuming the spot was meant to guide social distancing, I attempted to stand in the area and stumbled dangerously. While I viewed the incident humorously, it is a violation of OSHA 1910.22. While waiting to be helped(and seemingly being passed over in favor of canonical biker guys) my sister pointed out that one of the employees wore a mask that stated "THIS MASK ISNT FOR THE VIRUS, I'M HERE TO ROB YOU." My sister and I found the mask to be problematic at best, but did not raise an issue for concern of substandard service if we did so. The staff member we worked with was friendly and apologetic for the extended turnaround for work orders. I was also pleased to see that Joe himself was interacting with customers, reinforcing the local image of the shop. When I returned for my bike, there was different staff member wearing a mask stating "I AM HERE TO ROB YOU." This mask was additionally branded with "Joe's Bike Shop." After listening to the staff member complain that "Schwins are s***" regarding another customer, the young man approached me in exasperation (not at an appropriate social distance) to see what I needed. He gleefully told me that the shop does not accept Discover and was visibly disappointed when I had an alternative payment method. I exited the store as quickly as I could, feeling dirty. Upon calling later to see who worked with me, I was advised that there are several people who match the description given and team members don't put their names into the POS System to track. Having heard many of the wonderful things that JSB has done in the locally, I'm disappointed that its management is empowering employees to to display messages that are racially coded and engage in behaviors that reinforce the exclusionary image that the biking community has been trying to shake. I don't normally review businesses negatively, but I suspect my experience rings true for the average African American patron to JSB. If so, I want folks to be prepared before they visit. read more

He provides excellent customer service and works with you to find the perfect bike for you. I am so impressed because he is always there when I go and I there often. He hires well. I stopped in here a week or so ago to have them make sure my bike rack was installed correctly. (It was.) While I was there I asked about other bike racks that would make it easier for me to place my women's bike on the rack. They recommended a U-Bar ($40) and I was skeptical. However, the nice man who helped me took me into the shop and pulled one out of the box and showed me how easy it was to use. Today I test-drove my U-Bar and I have to say it is worth every penny. I didn't have to struggle to get my bike onto the rack. The U-Bar is super easy to use and also very strong. This simple solution solved a big problem for me and I am...grateful. I have little knowledge about bikes, looking to get started, and Joe (not the owner) patiently answered all my questions. Not only that, he actually down-sold me instead the usual salesman's attempt to up-sell. Great integrity. Gave great advice. He recommended all the accessories I needed without any over sell. Then the owner Joe helped me adjust an old bike rack we had to fit my car. After that, he tuned up my wife's old bike free of charge. What a great buying experience. I was greeted immediately by Nate, who was extremely patient with my endless questions, got me set up with a great bike that fits well and was priced right in the range that I was hoping for. He recommended accessories, but nothing outrageous -- just things that I would legitimately need for the uses that I described to him. I brought an old junker I recently acquired to Joe that wasn't in riding shape. Admittedly, I don't know a lot about bike service so I have always deferred to the mechanic for my needs. My last bike was a very simple, streamlined, single speed set up that was very lightweight. But that was stolen when our house was robbed. Then the pandemic hit and I lost my job. So replacing my bike with one of similar caliber hasn't been an option. I obtained this vintage 12 speed that wasn't yet rideable in the state it was in so I brought it in to Joe's to see what could be done to get me riding asap. Joe could easily have "up-sold" me on new tires, rims, breaks, bells and whistles, etc. and I would have been none the wiser. But he put my bike on the rack, spent about 20 minutes tweaking and oiling it, and when I asked for his assessment, his reply was, "You're good to go." I purchased a cell phone holder and walked out the door having spent less than $20 and now I have something to ride around the lake and get some much needed exercise. I have to give this shop 5 stars. In the 9 months I've been in Baltimore, they're the ONLY place where the staff accurately transcribed my four-letter last name, we're courteous, quoted an accurate price, and actually delivered the service requested without messing it up. They are truly exceptional for doing what people can expect as a baseline anywhere else in the country. I'd give them my business any day, if I hadn't had them ship my bicycle elsewhere.
