I am not one to habitually write negative-mediocre reviews. However, my experience with Joe's Bike Shop was unfortunately less than satisfactory. I was a former Mt. Washington Bike shop patron in the 1980s and early 1990s before I moved to Oakland-Berkeley, CA. I like to give everyone 50% of the benefit of some doubt, and an honest lap. However, if you have outlier on the curve bicycles that don't fit under the current day technologies familiarity bell curve, I don't recommend this shop. POSITIVES. Let me first say my aim is not to sour my positive experience had. I appreciate Jens' and Mike's customer service skills. They both listened to me, were respectful, courteous, and did not oversell their knowledge about my unique bicycles, keeping kept expectations reasonable and reassured me they would be transparent about any work that would be needed. I will say, Mike did a good job on the tune up. DING #1. Unfortunately, they did not check in when making a repair without soliciting my feedback, first. Replaced my derailleur with a ~$20 one, but I did not approve this switch out. I appreciate that safety is paramount with this shop, and I had an engaging discussion with Mike on this. He was apologetic for not checking in with me, and this was certainly appreciated. What this shop did not understand is my dated, 2006, trusty steed, urban assault/sherpa Specialized Tricross was INTENTIONALLY sans a third chain ring--whereby, it requires someone who is deft at dispensing 1.5 toggles of the old skool index shifters. Clearly they perceived this 'feature' as a safety flaw. Back in 2005/2006, this model came with the option to be sans the third chain ring. And, these shifters which are obsolete now. The set I have were the last ones could locate on this spaceship, and were recently installed last year. And yeah, the original index shifters lasted 16 years! (MAJOR) DING #2. Corey on the other hand has a MAJOR 'tude problem and is the reason I will NOT be returning to this establishment. Intransigent, omnipotent, disrespectful, unyielding, curt, utterly and COMPLETELY rude are the operatives that come to mind about him. His interpersonal skills have A LOT to be desired. Understatement. Clear the dude Corey is sans knowing how to dispense, 'I'm sorry. I made a mistake.' He needs to stand correct. Bounce on this cat if you know what's good for you. Ask for Mike or Jens. Aside: For a frame of reference, I can assert my agency on Corey's lack of customer service acumen. I spent a good number of years in the food service industry as a teenager, and while working my way through my BSc. Claim to Fame: I was the Assistant Manager of the highest yielding Haagen Däzs store in the country in Baltimore Harborplace during the summer of 1987. Intransigent Corey went out of his way to make a judgement call about my derailleur--claiming it was not the correct derailleur or installed correctly; quite likely it got nix a bit during the trip across the country. What this myopic dude failed to understand about my Tricross is it is intentionally configured this way due to only two chain rings configuration--mind you, by one of the most renown, competent, bicycle mechanics in this country, John Kos Koslosky at Castro Valley Cyclery in Castro Valley, CA. A cat who has been my bicycle mechanic for over 20 years, and who: - Since 1982, has been a road and mountain bicycle racer who even, at one time in his career, trained at the US Olympic training center in Colorado. - Is US National Team Mechanic certified. - Is a premier wheel builder (built more than 6000 wheels since 1984), including wheels for UCI world champions. - From 2001-2009 was the Australian National Mountain Bike DH/4X Team Technical Director and Head Mechanic. DING #3. I also had to enquire at least three times to be afforded a copy of an invoice for my annals. Not even cool I had to solicit this record of my repairs and cost of labor; this was a FIRST. Thankfully, I found another shop that has EXEMPLARY customer service skills, and wasn't even squeamish about servicing my one of a kind Dutch Batavus with experimental Sturmery-Archer hubs and drum brakes. They even reassured me they have access to Sturmey-Archer parts that may not be of everyone else's familiar. Yes, I had Joe's Bike Shop issue my Batavus a look over a week ago. The dialogue I had with Joe's Bick Shop did not include swirls of confidence for me. read more

I have used this shop to help with my bikes since I have moved here. I recently brought 2 bikes in to have them look at one at a time. The first one was a fold up it was a little loose in the middle.. This is unsafe to ride (I had rode my bike there) and, then the other it needed another gear shifter so i thought. This is unsafe to ride (again I rode there). I took them to another shop. The fold up needed the tension screw tightened. Now I ride it all the time. The second one needed the gear shifter and, another thing. The Employee told me my Schwinn bike is cheap. I'm not sure if I caught him on a bad day. Now, I cannot trust that they are just trying to sell me one of their bikes. If this happened to me it's happened to others. read more

Is this the greatest bike shop in Baltimore? No question. Among the many great bike shops in Bmore, Joe's clearly stands out as the best. The service is always awesome. They provide great information about bikes & bike-related matters. I recently took a spill & broke my rear hanger and derailleur. They are able to quickly get it repaired. Joe's even sourced a new derailleur for me which was not expected so quickly with the supply issues. Whether Mt Washington or Fells Point, Joe's is where it is at. read more

I'm pretty shocked by my experience here. If you break a shimano chain on your bike, (with typical Shimano drivetrain), and have to walk a couple miles to a bike shop for help. They may tell you to walk a few more miles to the next bike shop. There is no mention on their website that certain accessories disqualifies their help. In my case, a detachable electric motor prevented them from helping me. I could have easily popped it off or been offered a chain to attach myself but I was shown the door. Pretty heartless. Lost my household's business for sure. read more

I stopped by the shop to buy some tools to build a direct to consumer bicycle, they offered to lend me the tools for free as long as I brought them back.I ended up buying what I needed, but I sincerely doubt that you will get that kind of service ANYWHERE .I will definitely be back to their shop again. read more

I have never been treated so poorly I walked in after using this store for many times for tuning up my minibikes the clerk was so rude saying he would not fix any bikes they did not sell when I've been there many times all I needed was a tire to be Put on properly I had just had the wheel come off after trying to Assemble it myself. All I asked for was a simple pump up and show me how to put the innertube on properly and simply put the wheel on I don't know why I would've been spoken to that way after simply having an emergency this is a store I would never return to again. I was excited to try Joe's Bike Shop in MT Washington based on its strong local presence and enthusiastic endorsements from colleagues that ride competitively. While I am pleased with the core of the service done to my bicycle, the in-store experience left a poor taste in my mouth during both visits and will prevent me from recommending to any of my friends, particularly those of color or individuals who do not fit into the traditional mould for biking. My initial visit to Joe's was on 6/17. The storefront isn't optimized for shopping- apparel is scattered throughout, fitness nutrition items are not labeled with prices, and bicycles with work orders are dispersed amongst floor models for sale. There is also a sizeable area of floor caved in and marked only by a strip of duct tape. Assuming the spot was meant to guide social distancing, I attempted to stand in the area and stumbled dangerously. While I viewed the incident humorously, it is a violation of OSHA 1910.22. While waiting to be helped(and seemingly being passed over in favor of canonical biker guys) my sister pointed out that one of the employees wore a mask that stated "THIS MASK ISNT FOR THE VIRUS, I'M HERE TO ROB YOU." My sister and I found the mask to be problematic at best, but did not raise an issue for concern of substandard service if we did so. The staff member we worked with was friendly and apologetic for the extended turnaround for work orders. I was also pleased to see that Joe himself was interacting with customers, reinforcing the local image of the shop. When I returned for my bike, there was different staff member wearing a mask stating "I AM HERE TO ROB YOU." This mask was additionally branded with "Joe's Bike Shop." After listening to the staff member complain that "Schwins are s***" regarding another customer, the young man approached me in exasperation (not at an appropriate social distance) to see what I needed. He gleefully told me that the shop does not accept Discover and was visibly disappointed when I had an alternative payment method. I exited the store as quickly as I could, feeling dirty. Upon calling later to see who worked with me, I was advised that there are several people who match the description given and team members don't put their names into the POS System to track. Having heard many of the wonderful things that JSB has done in the locally, I'm disappointed that its management is empowering employees to to display messages that are racially coded and engage in behaviors that reinforce the exclusionary image that the biking community has been trying to shake. I don't normally review businesses negatively, but I suspect my experience rings true for the average African American patron to JSB. If so, I want folks to be prepared before they visit. read more

I thought this shop had a community vibe to it but it more for bike elitists. One the phone they seemed like they would be interested in taking my bike as a trade in, but when I showed up, they clarified that schwinns are not what they used to be. If they took it in - they could give me a credit but not to spend on another bike, certainly not a used bike and their new bikes, the cheapest ones are 450$. I suppose a bike shop in the city needs to have high priced clientele who buy that price point of bike to afford rent. I however thought it was a much more community oriented approachable place when I called, but was corrected, rather coldly outside the shop. I found a consignment used bike shop elsewhere that took my trade-in and got me into a better used bike. For half the price and same day! Lifetime tune-ups ! read more

I brought in a fairly tired surly cross check that, being a senior, I really needed to raise the handlebars but wanted it done right by installing a new uncut fork. I provided the fork, headset and stem. Shop did an excellent job replacing fork and cables and spacers which provided me the added handle bar height without the previous clunky Ritchey adjustable stem and a fresh new look, all at a surprisingly reasonable price. Today I tried to make a purchase for the last time.... I called joes bike shop in fells this morning about getting a bike seat cushion. I was told the computers were down so I'd have to call back later to make the purchase. No problem. I called later and spoke to someone and they told me the computers were back up and that I could come by to make a purchase just make sure to come before 6PM. I get here at 5:50PM and someone opens the door for me. I told them that I had just called and that I was picking up a seat cushion. The guy proceeded to complain to me and said, " so you're gonna make me work till the last minute?" I told him the computers were down earlier in the day when I was ready to make my purchase. I was embarrassed, I just got off the phone with someone from joes and walked there from my house on Fleet Street. I just wanted a bike seat cushion and I didn't want to order it from Amazon. I REALLY wanted to like this bike shop. It's fairly well stocked and it looks like they do lots of repairs. I went in for a new seat post and some tires. They didn't have the seat post but I got some help picking out tires. I was told that my seat post would be ordered and in before the end of the week and I'd get a text message saying it was here. The end of the week comes around and it's not in. I call the store. A rather rude person answers the phone and tells me it was never ordered and that he has no idea what the size of the post is and he'll see if he can't track it down and call me back. He never called back. I ordered it off of Amazon because I really wanted it before the start of the next week but my order was never put in or even recorded. I was very disappointed. Did not end up buying a bike here but Matt (or Mike) and Isaac were super helpful! These two guys set up all the bikes I wanted to test ride and helped walk me through some finer points about the bike companies and riding in Baltimore. They were very friendly the whole time and seemed like they just wanted to educate me on bike culture generally. I appreciated that. If you buy a bike here, you get a fitting and TWO years of maintenance. That's definitely the best deal in town that I heard of. I didn't buy a bike here because this shop focuses on commuter bikes and I was looking for more of an endurance bike. Joe's also carries mainly newer model bikes because it's a small shop and I found an old model of a bike I liked for a substantial discount at a different place. read more

Amazing experience! I was helped by professionals who knew their stuff. They hung in thru all my questions concerns and boring stories! the new fat tire bike comes with a 5 year frame warranty and they give a 2 year maintenance package ABSOLUTELY FREE with your purchase. All in all I spent $1651.73 compared to nightmare I had with my bike for $600 from Dicks sporting goods that I had to take back twice due to the sprocket bolt shearing out and wrecking into traffic almost dieing! Worst customer service experience I've ever had... I'd give negative stars if I could. Put together a mountain bike out of junk parts I found/was given for free so I could ride around the county streets with my 6 & 8 year old kids. I only needed 2 tubes and a chain installed(already had a new chain in the package) to get the bike rolling. Walmart was out of tubes and the tool to snap the chain together so I decided to lookup a local bike shop. Found Joe's Fells Point shop on the inter web and liked his story about how his dad gave him a road bike as a kid so I arrived At the shop last Friday May15th around 1pm. Told the curly red haired "kid" that I needed 2 new tubes and the chain put on the bike. I handed him the chain and he took my bike, name and phone number. There was no discussion of price but it was 2 tubes and a chain pop so I wasn't concerned. He told me it would be 2 or 3 days before it was ready. A chain pop and 2 tubes should take 15 minutes but ok I'm sure they were busy because of the Coronavirus. Wednesday May 20th I called and got the "kid" on the phone. He didn't know when my bike was going to be ready and couldn't give me a timeframe but told me it wasn't his fault cause they were "really busy". I told him I'd be in the next day to get the bike whether it was ready or not. I was rather perturbed with the response and attitude I was given on the call... Thursday May 21st I received a text that the bike was ready. Hooray! All is right with the world and Joe's shop was the best. No harm no foul! Friday May 22nd I arrived at the shop around 11am and knocked on the door. Ten minutes later the kid opened the door and took my name. 5 minutes later he came back with the bike. The chain was on but there were also 2 new tires on the bike. Before the kid could say anything I asked why there were 2 new tires on the bike? The kid responded that's what you asked for and the total would be $95. I told him that I didn't want new tires but he insisted that's what I told him when I originally left the bike with him. There was a minute of back and forth and he told me he would put the original tires back on the bike and it would be ready this afternoon. I told him I'd wait as I wasn't driving all the way back to the shop again. The kid told me he would take his tires back and give me my original tires back and that I would have to put them on myself. I then asked for the manager and the kid told me he was the manager. I told him I wasn't leaving until he fixed my bike. He reluctantly agreed and told me he would fix it so I went back outside and sat in my car. 15 minutes later the kid came back out with the bike, placed it on the curb and went back in the shop locking the door never saying a word to me. I got out of the car to inspect the bike. The original "like new" tires I took to the shop we're back on the bike. The tires were 2 different types but they both have perfect tread. I then sat on the bike and realized the kid didn't fill the tires all the way up so I couldn't ride the bike. At this point I was livid so I loaded the bike in the car and waited by the front door to pay the tab. 10 minutes later after the kid never came back I called and got him on the phone. He told me there was no charge and "we're done here" which I found to be an incredibly rude way to end a transaction with a customer. I was always taught to under promise and over deliver. It's just good business. I guess Joe 's shop doesn't feel the same way I do. Second I was always told that the customer is always right. I guess Joe's shop believes that the shop is always right and the customer is dead wrong. Thirdly $95 for 2 tires and tubes seems a bit rich for me given there was no discussion of price before hand. Either the kid was just to dumb to take accurate notes during our initial exchange or he was trying to up sell me by putting premium tires on my bike expecting I would be too polite to tell him I didn't want them and just pay. Either way I'll never go back to Joe's. Joe please fire the curly red haired "kid" manager as fast as possible. You'll be doing yourself a big favor. read more

Joe's is overpriced and entirely unhelpful if you have a bike you didn't buy from them. I just bought and received a new bike online and took it into them because a small portion of the frame got bent in the mail. My boyfriend is an engineer and avid bicyclist and diagnosed the simple problem; we knew they had the tools to help us bend it back (a few minutes of work). We were told they have a "strict policy" of $125 service fee to help with ANYTHING related to a bike not bought there. Meanwhile even their used bikes are marked up, and all the staff are sitting behind the counter chatting amongst themselves. We were planning on spending over $100 on bike accessories on this particular visit in addition to fixing the minorly bent frame, but clearly realized we wanted to take our business elsewhere. This was the second time I went into Joe's and had a staff member brush me off condescendingly although I was clear about exactly what I was looking for. I don't know if it has to do with me being female or not 100% devoted to the cycling world, but I didn't even receive appropriate eye contact either time. Tried to give them a second shot. The service at this specific bike shop, was absolutely horrendous! For it being my first encounter at the establishment!!! The customer service was extremely below standard. I was willing to pay for any and all services that I received, however the entire staff neglected to answer my questions in a concise and informative manner pertaining to the wheel specs in and overall capacity. The representatives at the brick and mortar shop were rude in the illest of manners to the point; the Representative walked away as I was asking a question while at the same time directing me to leave... if I had to put a name to the entire interaction, I would have to say simply, " black lives don't matter" when it comes to the disservice I experienced. I was looking forward to being an active customer due to the fact, my farther recommended me to the "Joes Bikes shop"... but obviously the times have changed once again. read more

I made a trip down to fells point to check out some used bike parts that ( unfortunately ) were stolen off of my bike about a week ago. The reason I choose Joe's were the glaringly reviews I read about the service. Boy was I surprised when a worker came to the door and informed me that the bikes they sell are 1600.00 or more and that I could not enter the store. First and foremost what gave him the impression that could not or would spent that type of money on a bike. Oh I know what it was. The color of my skin.After I told him that I would call the police they let me enter the store; however, by this time I am pissed. I was followed and harrassed the entire time I was in the store. I told them I would be better off taking my business to another establishment after I showed them I had enough money in my pocket to jill buy three bikes 1600.00 a piece. Dont do business with Joe's, especially if you have the same skin color as me. I went straight to my car and wrote this review as a way of dealing with my feelings. Hands down my favorite bike shop in the city. I first purchased from Joe's back in early 2012 - a brand new bike - and have been beyond happy with the level of service that I've received from them since, whether I'm coming in for maintenance checks or new parts. The entire staff is awesome - super friendly, very knowledgable, and always willing to help out. Couldn't tell you how many times I've came in with a minor issue expecting to leave my bike overnight and they just dropped what they were doing and fixed it on the spot. As is stands, I've recommended multiple friends to purchase from Joe's and have heard nothing but positive experiences across the board. Highly recommended! read more

The staff are usually friendly, but not everyone has the same expertise and/or customer service values and professionalism. A year ago, I had them replace one of my wheels; we decided to leave the tire in place. A few months ago, I was starting to get flat tires frequently (once every other ride), and they were always on the inside of the tire, punctured by the rim. The first time, I took it in and the guy just said I had "bad luck". He grabbed me a new tube. I noticed the size didn't match the tire I had, but he said they didn't stock my size and it would be fine. It happened again, and when I came back the next week, the next guy said they shouldn't have put that size tube in, and that they actually stock my size. This kept happening beyond this, so I went to Handlebar Cafe and they have taken more time with me to figure out the issue, instead of just jumping to conclusions. read more

Great, quick service! As someone who rides a bike all the time but has no idea how they're put together, it was a relief to walk into Joe's and have my bike tuned up and ready to go in just 10 minutes. The staff is extremely personable and friendly, and the work they do is fairly cheap compared to a lot of the places I've had my bike fixed in Chicago. I will come here for all my bike needs, which is inevitable given all the potholes in Baltimore. read more

I thought that they did great work ,but really what they did was mess my bike up more so that I would have to come back and get it fix. I stopped coming to Joe's because Joe the owner is a complete ass hole to his customers and they always touch something on my bike that they did not need to touch. Best experience I've had with a bike shop, ever. Great service!! My bike was stripped in a robbery outside of Crunch Fitness in Canton, and we took it to Joe's. They were really empathetic, and they suggested reasonably priced replacements, and really tried to minimize our expenses. So professional and nice. As a fairly new biker, I just had a great first experience here. Came in with what felt like a stupid question about the bike I filched from my parent's garage last time I was home. Not only did the guy helping me out teach me how to do some of the tune-up myself, he also filled up my tires, adjusted my brakes, and lubricated my chains. And then didn't charge me for any of it! I bought new tires and tubes for my old bike here. Yes I could have gotten them on Amazon for cheaper (come on people, it's a local business in an expensive location, it is going to be more expensive) but I wanted to support a local business. After I tried putting them on my bike, I noticed the tire bulging over the rim. I took the bike to their shop and asked them to take a look. They fixed it right there in about 20 minutes and didn't charge me for it. The extra money I spent was well worth the fantastic customer service. This is extremely rare for me to do this. I had issues with my bike at the beach and the local places (Fenwick Bike) wanted a week and $$ plus they weren't to fond of a Big DEPT store bike (Diamondback). I live in Jarrettsville and brought the bike home. I tried some of the local places in BELAIR to get a Bottom Bracket repaired and no one seemed interested. Including the place I bought it. I Called Joes Bike Shop in Fells Point Friday night and I brought the bike to them Saturday morning. they fixed the bike right away AND took care of some other issues that I did not even see. These guys KNOW BIKES!! I think the tech was named "Jingle". They were OVER THE TOP with Service!!! Worth the drive!!!! read more

There are many shops in town, and I have not paid them all a visit, but I find no need to. Joe's is such a great place to purchase parts or just go in to chat. The staff is super friendly and they know their stuff. They give it to you straight and are not about ripping you off. Anytime I've purchased parts here they have installed them too. If I'd reviewed Joe's solely upon my first visit, it would get 2 stars. I took my hybrid in after riding the Tour Du Port this Fall, and explained that something was wrong with my back wheel. Not only was it noticeably dragging, but the bike techs who checked it before the race said it was borderline unsafe to ride on. When I explained this to the bike tech at Joe's, he scanned the wheel, fiddled with it a bit, but said he couldn't find any significant issues, and sent me on my way. On I rode, across the Charm City streets, rear wheel dragging away. Whether by luck or misfortune, I paid my second visit to Joe's when my chain broke a couple months later. Friendly staff, quick fix, fair bill, back to the asphalt. Solid experience. My visit that earns the 4 stars, however, was this past Wednesday. I was riding to work, and my rear wheel locked up, skidding me to an impromptu halt in the middle of the road. Happily, my snazzy stop was on Caroline, a quick walk from Broadway. The shop staff took the bike back for a once-over, and when the tech returned, he had an ashen look on his face. "So.." he starts..."You essentially have nothing...holding your rear wheel on your bike.". As I listened, dropped-jaw, he explained the piece that held the wheel on the axle was gone, and that the wheel had wound itself down onto the axle to the point where it completely locked up. I laughed (a nice cocktail of relief and shock), and said "I was wondering why my entire bike group was so much faster than me!". He was like "Yeah, you're probably in a lot better shape than you think you are.". Not only did they take my bike in immediately and start working on it, but they gave me a free bike rental to zip around on while they worked! Great customer service. read more
