Who doesnt like to bike? Recently, i have been more and more interested in picking up biking since i have been getting injured way too much when playing soccer (p.s will still play). Anyhow, decided to put some money into getting a bike a base model nothing fancy, and came here. The guys were extremely helpful, and ordered a bike that i wanted which they didnt have my size of that model. They sent me an email when the bike arrived and i test drove it. I knew that i had made the right choice with the Trek 7.2, a fitted brake stand and a free bottle later, i was riding back home. I intend to bike between 5-6 times a week with this new addition. I have been a hardcore cyclist for the past 23 years and have used many of the local shops in that time. I live in north Baltimore county and have tried The Bicycle Connection, Lutherville Bikes, Race Pace and Princeton Sports, all of which have some really great guys working there, but I have chosen to go a little bit out of my way to use Joe's. Why? I find Joe's Bike Shop to have really good customer service. Case in point: I brought my bike in to have them fix a drivetrain issue. I expected to leave the bike there for a couple of days but the mechanic, Ethan, immediately took my bike and started working on it. I told him there was no need to drop everything for my bike, but he didn't seem to mind. He couldn't 100% fix the issue through no fault of his own (I screwed up the bike) and didn't charge me for the 90% repair he was able to do. Outstanding. I had them order a new part and had them install it later, *something that was done while I waited*. Additionally, I've brought my bike in for some other issues and the shop took the time to check it out without charging me. I asked them to let me pay them something, and they told me to not worry about it. It's that type of great attention to a customer's needs that will keep me coming back, and is part of the reason why I took the time to write this review. To be fair, I'm not sure if the guys recognize that I take my riding seriously and know that I hate to miss riding time because of mechanicals, so maybe they prioritize their customers based on the perceived biking zeal. If it's any indication of my enthusiasm for the place, I'm thinking of putting the cool Joe's Bike Shop sticker on my truck and maybe on my bike. I just got a bicycle and went to Mt. Washington Bike Shop to get the basics. Compared to the prices I found online, this shop's items are mostly at or below the average price-- which is great. The one item I got there that was over the average market price was a Kryptonite lock. You can definitely find these online at sale prices, but I needed one NOW so I bought it anyway. They do not have lower-end helmets for sale-- the cheapest is about $45-- so don't go there thinking you're going to find the $30 helmets available at Target or other non-bike-specific places. One thing that I was worried about was that I was going to be laughed at and treated like a total newb. Once I explained that I was(am), in fact, a newb, the CSR helping me was very informative and polite. I would go back, and probably will. 4/5 stars for not having a full line of helmets and for not competitively pricing their locks. Update on 8/5/2014: I just had a wheel replaced, and they *forgot the rim tape!* I didn't check before I rode, which is my fault, but this is a sad state of affairs. Still 4/5, though, because they're still quite friendly and the prices are competitive. read more

They are nice and friendly but their tune up and what they say when selling their goods are questionable. I bought a bike and told them I'm gonna ride home. When I was on my way home, seat post sank. Once they put wrong kind of chain oil to my road bike. Another example, they sold me a pair of shoes telling me they fit well as I tried them on. I was a beginner and couldn't tell that is a bullshit. Because when using a boa/metal strings, it feels like a right fit esp if you don't know what you are doing as a baby rider. I regret getting a bike from them and won't do that again. I still go there but I only purchase items that I pre-researched myself or stuff don't need their advice. read more

I took my old bike to have new tube put on tire and seat adjusted. I didn't have an appointment and just like other reviews I read they started working on it right away. Done in less than twenty minutes. the adjusted the seat for free. it only cost 8$ for tube 8$ for labor. less 20$! I did notice most of the items in there store are expensive. definitely recommend for fixing bikes. read more

After 16 years with my road bike I decided it was time for an upgrade. I could not have chosen a better shop. Joe spent a great deal of time with me going over my options and helping me choose the right bike that fit my needs, my riding habits and my budget. He seemed as excited about me getting the right bike as I did! As with anything brand new, there were a few kinks to work out. Any time I went into the shop they immediately grabbed my bike and made the necessary adjustments. I needed to get new pedals, shoes and cleats and they were again extremely helpful and knowledgeable. I did some cost comparisons and was very surprised at the results. I had already decided to buy everything at the "local bike shop" because I want them to stay in business. I can buy a helmet on the internet, but can't get my bike repaired or tuned up there. Joe's prices were sometimes the same as what I found online. As expected, many items were a little more, but worth it for the convenience and for knowing that my purchase probably helps keep a local business open. I ride a lot, but I don't know much about bikes. I guess that doesn't make me a hard-core cyclist. I had tons of dumb questions, but never once did I feel intimidated or uncomfortable there. Joe and staff were always courteous, helpful and willing to spend time with any item or any question. I saw them give the same attention to every customer during the hours I spent there over four or five weeks. Can't recommend them highly enough! read more

Incredible service! Went in to get my bike looked at, as I didn't know anything about bikes at the time, and came out impressed. Not only did they inspect the bike right there, but they fixed the issues and did a quick tune up at no charge. He walked me through what he was doing so that I could learn a thing or two. seems like everyone rates this place 4 stars . . . the guys are cool and helpful, but I wish they would turn down the television. It's hard to focus and tell someone what you need, or what you are looking for, when Everyone Love Raymond is blaring away right next to you. I could understand if they had x game videos or something, but crappy sound tracks loud as all hell . . . also, I found the same bike I bought 2 weeks later at their other store priced $100 cheaper. This is a shop for gourmet bicyclists. They have all of the cool pricey stuff, but if you are a normal guy with an older bike this is not your place. A lot of my friends who are serious cyclists recommend it but for regular weekend rider the attitude and the price is hard to take. If you are a really serious rider and willing to buy the best this may be a great shop. If you are not pretending to compete I would recommend going elsewhere to get a chain and some advice on how to put it on. read more

What a great bike shop. It doesn't have a huge sales floor, it's a little dark, but it's the real deal. They really care about getting you the right stuff, not just selling you stuff. They take time with you. I'm a relative beginner but they treat me like I know what I'm doing. They are at all local events supporting biking and it's likely Joe himself will help you. It's worth buying here because of their knowledge, the support you get, and because they are active in the community. read more

Note, this review is not about bikes, biking gear, or the like. I don't bike. That being said... What's the first place you think of when looking for a pair of prescription sports sunglasses? Certainly, not a bike shop. And yet, it was to Joe's Bike Shop in Mount Washington that I found myself headed (upon the recommendation of a very nice lady who worked at Lenscrafters) in search of a pair of affordable prescription sunglasses. Imagine my surprise when I found out that not only could I order sunglasses there, but I got quite a bit of attention and help throughout the ordering process (I highly recommend talking to PJ, who previously ordered prescription sunglasses himself so he knew the drill). I have to say that I'm fairly satisfied with how they came out, and I love the discount that I got for ordering two pairs instead of one! If these guys always put the same care into their bikes and concern about their customers that I experienced for a pair of sunglasses, then this is definitely the place to go! read more

Pro- Local shop, knowledgeable staffs Con- Expensive, expect to pay MSRP, Doesn't honor their own return policy! Pay with credit card if you can, once cash in their hand it will be hard press to get it back! Stopped by Joe's few days ago (Sister shop of Mt. Washington Bike) with a friend. He is new to MTB, and was on the market for a pair of clip-in, and shoes. The gentleman at the shop was very helpful, and friendly during the sale, and even mounted the cleats onto the shoes for him. Later that afternoon, my friend changed his mind, was told he could not return the shoes once the cleats has been installed and it might leave some "markings" if they remove the cleats! In my 15 years of biking, this is the most off the wall excuse I ever heard. Advised my friend to give Mt. Washington a try, hoping they have more common sense... after 30 mins of heated debates, they ended up took the shoes back, and will only give him a store credit. Still did not honor their own 45 days refund-if-new return policy. Much as I want to support my local business, and the little guys, but with experience like this make me NOT EVER AGAIN step my foot, or recommending them to anyone!!! BTW- few of us caught the 29er fever, and are on the market for few Fisher Paragons.. Joe, if you are reading this, sorry, it's your loss. Keep running the business this way in today's economy, you will be out-of business in 3 years. read more

Joe's provides an example of what a bike shop should NOT be. They're overpriced, snotty, and overrun by incompetent, young high-school mechanics. I've been there two times and each time the experience gets worse. Each time I leave they make me feel like it's a privilege to have my bike worked on there. I am so impressed with the customer service at this store. I am a brand-new cyclist and they couldn't be more concerned about my satisfaction and comfort level. I've dealt with a variety of salespeople at this location and everyone has been top-notch. When you purchase a new bicycle, the extensive store warranty gives specific dates for follow-up and a checklist of exactly what services will be performed. The prices are competitive and the selection of bicycles is good. There is no reason to shop anywhere else. read more

Joe's Bike Shop. I went to get my tires checked. Apparently the 2 seconds that it took to do this wasn't enough of a money maker for them so I was asked if I wanted to do a check up. Given that I was told it was a reasonably priced shop, I said yes without asking about the price I got hooked into a $100 service when the bike wasn't even worth it. I complained when I went to pick up the bike because all it looked like they did was change the brake pads, fill the tires with air and squirt the chain with oil. The counter clerk kept responding to me, "I don't understand, I don't understand. You think labor doesn't cost that much?" My point was that 1- the service wasn't worth $100 and the bike wasn't worth $100. They tried to con me by saying the bike was worth $485 new but the bike was at least 10 years old and was selling for $280 10 years ago. Caveat Emptor and ask the price before you agree to anything. read more
