I had a horrible experience with this bike shop which is disappointing after reading all the great reviews from everybody else. I dropped my bike off on a Thursday afternoon asked for a basic tune up and also gave them a list of issues I was having with the bikes. Jeff helped me and told me he will give me a call by the due date which was 3:00pm on Tuesday. I asked him to give me a call if they need to buy any parts or do any work on it other than the tune up. He said that was no problem. Fast forward to Tuesday, I thought it was strange that they didn't contact me and I was due to pick up my bike later that afternoon so I called them when they opened just to get a status. I talked to Jeff and he said pretty much said your receipt says 3pm today so that's your status. Honestly, I didn't care if it was delayed I just wanted to know so I can request to leave work early (my work is in the Bethesda area) and if they found any issues with my bike. He said that they haven't started on it yet so they don't know if any extra parts were needed. Fine I told him to call me when it's done so I know when I should plan to leave work. Still no call at 3:30pm so I called again. Jeff answered and put me on hold and when he returned he my bike isn't ready I was pretty annoyed at this point so I said oh you said it will be and he said well we've been flustered with customers and shipments so it's not ready yet. I said I would've appreciated if he called me to let me know ahead of time which made him give me an attitude and said it'll be done by the end of the day or you can just come pick it up if you want to cancel your appointment. He hung up but when I called back John answered and he said he heard the call and questioned MY attitude and said my complaint doesn't make sense because as long as the bike is ready by the end of the day there's no issue. I told John pretty much what I told Jeff. Some people can't just leave their work whenever they want. John said he's not going to argue with me anymore and also hung up. That's twice I was hung up by the shop guys. At this point I left them a message telling them to stop doing anymore work on my bike and that I will pick it up right now. On my 40 minute drive there I got a text saying my bike is ready for pick up. Hmm when i got there it was the same back and forth. What I got from the conversation is that they've been busy and people have been calling them all day asking about the status of their bikes. One of the shop guy says he doesn't understand why people don't understand that the time and date on the receipt is when the bike is ready, and why people like me are calling hours before the due date. Well maybe because some of us need to plan our day out and not just leave whenever the bike is done. Also, he's pretty much saying that they're taking their frustration out on their customers who just want to know the status of their bikes. To be honest, I'm not sure if the work was even done on my bike because other than the chain and gears everything else still looks pretty dirty. It's also surprising that the bike wasn't done when I called at 3:30 but at 4:00 I received a text saying its ready... Next time I need work on my bike I'm definitely going somewhere else who understands the importance of communication. read more

I started riding on the road recently. Grabbed a friends mountain bike and loved it. After a few days using a bike patently unsuited to road riding I decided to get a real road bike. Craigslist was a nightmare. There was absolutely no market for nice used bicycles. Those I found were all the wrong size. My correct size is a 60cm frame. I found myself saying things like "oh, I can ride a 54cm...probably". To avoid looking like a circus clown on a tiny bicycle and generally pulling my hair out buying a headache, I decided to stop into the Cycle Mill. One of the guys there, Nick, told me everything about how to pick out a good used bike, what to look for, and even what sites I could troll for good deals. This was a good start since I hate slimy sales tactics and pushy people. He clearly cared more about helping me find a bike than just pushing a quick sale. He also let me know my options in the new market. For about $200-$300 more I could have a brand new Jamis bike, assembled with free lifetime service and a factory warranty. The price was low enough that I figured Jamis bikes must be crap. Nope. After a bit of research I found out they are great bikes. They just don't have a household name like Trek or Cannondale that costs 30-50% more. After sleeping on the decision I decided to buy a brand new bike from these guys. The crew here is welcoming and fun, the place sells great products, the location is wonderful, and they take the confusing nightmare out of picking a bike. If you're ready to get into bicycling, I'd recommend dropping in here first. read more

These guys are bicycle enthusiasts through and through. I actually came by on a day when they were holding a get together. I brought my folding E-Bike in for a tune and wipe down special for $75 which they were advertising on facebook. Usually most avid cyclists frown upon E-Bike guys but everyone actually embraced it and thought it was kinda cool. I work in the auto industry but am fairly clueless with bicycles. Bike was squeaking and shifting poorly. Dropped it off and had my girlfriend picked it up and to my surprise they only charged me $25. I intend on bringing both of my E-Bikes there for any repair needs. read more

I was approached by an employee named Kevin who was insulting, rude, and condescending. He insulted the bike I was on and incorrectly implied that I couldn't afford the bikes that they had. I brought my bike by for a preseason tune up. I have a 10 year old Diamondback hybrid that I ride approximately 25 times a year. I explained what I was looking for and they recommended the cheapest (bronze) tune up for $75.00. I appreciated that they didn't try to upsell their services and instead sold me what I needed. I picked my bike up the next day and was very impressed by the thoroughness of the tune up. They repacked the wheel bearings which other shops charge extra for. Overall it was a positive experience all around, I'd definitely recommend them to anyone in need of service on their bike! read more

I came in on a Monday afternoon to drop my nine year old daughter's rusty bike off for a tune up. She had been complaining that it was "broken" and I expected I would have to drop $25-$50 to appease her. Also expected she wouldn't be able to ride with her friends for a couple of days. Within 5 minutes they had put air in her tires, adjusted her seat and handlebars and she was ready to ride. They did it for free!!! I tried to pay them for their kindness, but they refused. My son cracked the rear derailleur about 2 weeks after we had a complete maintenance job done by Race Pace over a year ago (their brake and gear service for $90), and then it just sat in our garage for over a year. I finally got around to taking it back to see how much the repairs would be at Race Pace to install a new derailleur, and they wanted to charge me about $180 for parts and labor based on the derailleur and said it would require a whole new service to make sure everything was working smoothly! I told them that was crazy since it hadn't even been ridden more than 2 weeks after the last service, and all of the things they wanted to do with their $90 service was completely unnecessary (brakes and front gears worked perfectly)- after haggling about just getting a working derailleur put on, the finally said they could do it for about $120- but I just left with a sour taste in my mouth. We then took the bike over to The Cycle Mill- and not only did they quote a very reasonable price (less than $80) to buy and install the new derailleur, but they also changed the tube as well. It's a small shop, but very friendly and knowledgeable- and basically the "anti-Race Pace" who wants to gouge you for services you don't need. read more
