The counter attendant was not very friendly and could have been more welcoming. Has many natural products and homemade items for sale inside which I like. Very good food and coffee. Joe's bread looked good on paper - great menu, impeccable reviews, good location with adequate seating, etc. We came in for breakfast on a Monday. Ticket for four people was a hundred bucks and change. Four entrees, four drinks. Coffee was decent. The food was awful. The croque madame was, apparently, made by someone who had never eaten one. The sandwich was stone cold with the saddest little drizzle of what I can only imagine was fully congealed béchamel that had been piped on and maybe popped in a toaster oven for fifteen seconds. The egg on top was cooked over hard. Why even put that sandwich on the menu if you're going to execute it so poorly? The crepes were gummy, the avocado on the green goddess salad was mealy somehow. We just ate what we could of our meal and left. I would give this place a miss. If they're going to charge what they do, they need to fix the food. read more

This is a wonderful new edition to Chesterton. Great bread cafe and coffee shop with a ton of seating. Fantastic place to grab a coffee to go or to sit down to study or have a small meeting. I stopped in on a Saturday morning around 8:30. They had fresh loaves of Farmer's Bread that were still warm! I bought one to take home and immediately enjoyed it after getting there. We stumbled upon Joe's Bread as the coffee shop on the main road was closed on Sunday and it turned out to be the best experience! I ordered an iced latte, a breakfast sandwich with a side, and a loaf of bread all for $25. My coffee and food were delicious. The cafe itself is so cute, with tons of indoor and outdoor seating. Fantastic,! First eating time there for us. We wish this place were closer to our home. We had an omelette which was cooked to perfection (eggs not overdone), very good mushroom crepes, and a delicious open-faced egg on ham and cheese and bread item (which I don't remember the name of). Very fortunately, one of us got the brussel sprouts as her side item. You must, MUST try these. They were so very good. One more thing that you simply have to try is one of their cheese danishes. The pastry would impress Paul Hollywood. The filling is not overly sweet. We will get one of these every single time we eat there. We also had three different coffees/lattes. Every one was so good. I needed this place. After finding a Starbucks in a grocery store and a Bixbys coffee with a drive thru and an inside that resembled McDonalds, I found this gem with fantastic drip coffee and an ambiance that seems refreshingly out of place from what I have seen. Lovely space with calming music and such friendly staff. This should be your only choice for coffee shops in the area. read more

Beware - their posted hours indicate they're open until 3pm. We found out that the kitchen is closed way ahead of that posted time. We arrived at 2:40pm, and were told we could only get our food in to- go containers - 20 minutes before closing!! We finished before 3pm, and we asked if they had recycling for all our cardboard containers, and they said no. Terrible for the environment! Being treated like guests and served on plates when time allowed, would have been the respectable thing to do. read more

They have oatmilk. Delicious hot chai latte. I've had the chocolate muffin twice, and it was dry and not very chocolaty. Love the ambiance - it's a very old building with a metal ceiling with a raised pattern. But it can be very cold in winter. I get cold easily and even with a coat on, I was too cold and couldn't linger. Had to bring my friend back to my house. Joe's Bread has some stained glass windows and was very quiet. What a great unique place. You feel comfortable the second you walk in. The barista greets you with a great smile. She made my americano perfectly. The breads are artisanal and delicious! I particularly like the pretzel Stix which are crunchy on the outside and gooey on the inside. Today I just had the greatest cream puff ever. The cream was light but full and the pastry was light yet with flakey structure. I've never had one that good. The perfect size, not too small. Definitely a place to come every time you are near. Love this bakery, coffee shop, café! If some morning you find yourself on 94 in northwest Indiana, consider stopping at Joe's Bread in Chesterton. Its only 6 minutes off 94 (Rt 49 exit, south). Joe's Bread has authentic baked goods such as ham and cheese croissant and danish, or light meals like omelets, crepe, sandwiches and salads. I prefer quality over quantity and Joe's Bread does not disappoint. If you happen to be staying in the area visiting the Indiana Dunes area, this is definitely the best option for breakfast in the Miller Beach, Porter or Chesterton area. We went on Saturday but the only bread left was brioche...but if that's the consolation prize, I'll take it! It is so light and buttery just like brioche should be. The car smelled so good that my husband pulled off a chunk on the way home. Croissants sound wonderful and so does all the bread. The coffee is delicious without a lot of acid. I've tried a crusty, tangy whole wheat loaf (excellent), a brioche loaf (excellent), a croissant, (same), and a cardamom roll (out of this world).
