I visited Chesterton this weekend to meet up with some friends who live in Chicago. I arrived a little early and had some time to kill before I could check into the Airbnb, so I popped into downtown Chesterton for some tea. The town is small, but super charming. I wish I would have had more time to walk around the town. Even the customers sitting outside said hi to me as I walked in, the friendly Midwest vibes were real. The inside is charming and sufficiently spaced out for social distancing. I approached the counter in the back of the shop and ordered and iced chai tea latte. The staff were super friendly and quickly rang me up. There was plastic separating the staff from the customers. The iced chai was delicious. I also used the wifi while I was there which worked even as I sat at a table in front of the coffee shop. If I lived around here, I would work from that table all the time! The service was excellent, the employee who took my order over the phone was very helpful and knowledgeable about food allergies; they are gluten friendly not dedicated GF. Came in today and they were slammed. The owner Laura graciously let me know that they were backed up. The young lady who took my order, did so with a smile and told me about the delay. I sat down and enjoyed conversation with an older retired gentleman and the owner joined us. My Americano was spot on on this very cold day. I was in the area at the European Market. As I had not had brunch, I decided to try this place. Walking in I got a cool vibe about the place...and I noted they had a nice selection of drinks (hot and cold) and food itself. I noticed they had egg frittatas so decided to get one. Unfortunately the one I wanted with mushrooms was unavailable so decided on a Denver Fritatta. I also got a cold brew (Americano) coffee with that. When I eventually got my meal (took a little longer than I expected after going up there a couple of times to see where it was), it was not too bad...the eggs were nestled on top of a bed of spinach and some bread on the side along with fruit. The cold brew coffee was also pretty good with some cream and Splenda. All in all this was a nice visit....I'll be back again to try one of their sandwiches or perhaps a nice hot coffee drink and pastry in the fall when the weather cools off. read more

What a sweet coffee shop in such a sweet town!! We arrived at 8:45 and thought we'd walk around a bit before they opened, but the owner was walking in when we pulled up, and invited us in! I had an iced dirty chai with soy milk and a shot of hazelnut flavor - the best drink I've had in a long time. The spinach quiche was amazing as well. We randomly came across this cafe in a Google search for cafes near Indiana Dunes State Park, where we had camped the night before. Just needed a spot to plug in for some office time and we were immediately floored. The management here is superb. We travel the country a LOT and some mornings are rougher than others...this particular one we wanted to grab a bite and hit the road again, and after some small talk, a sword swallowing display later, and some well wishes--we were given some baked goods, some amazing food, and had a wonderful time. :D Tinderbox Circus Sideshow approved! I generally work from home, which means tons of frequent distractions. My adorable Rottweiler is barking all day, or the closets need to be cleaned out pronto, or I just HAVE to take a nap, or Law & Order is on...again. If I can't focus at home, I venture out to a locally owned coffee shop or restaurant to get some serious work done. Today I grabbed the laptop and went to Red Cup Cafe & Deli in Chesterton. I will definitely be back for a relaxing brunch with the hubs very soon. Here's why: The Red Cup serves Metropolis Coffee. If you're from Chicago, you know what I mean. Smooth and delicious! They have breakfast specials, a brunch menu, and lots of hot and cold sammies. The baked goods look totally decadent. If I enjoyed sweets, I'd probably try one of each. There's tons of free street parking on both sides of the street in front of the cafe. I'm sure it's difficult to find an open space on any given summer Saturday when the European Market is in full force, but it's no problem on a Thursday afternoon. The atmosphere is quirky and cozy, with lots of mix-and-match furniture including a few high-top tables and stools, couches and overstuffed chairs, and even a large dining room style table that seats eight. Great for groups, couples, and singles alike. The completely random musical selection is probably my favorite thing about the Red Cup. I've been here for an hour and have heard smooth '70s soul, synth-pop, ragtime and old-timey jazz, Wilco, Alabama Shakes, Modest Mouse, and Joy Division. The variety is truly impressive. Who knows what I'll hear next? Ella Fitzgerald? Hank Williams, Sr? Stevie Nicks? Kraftwerk? The servers and baristas know what they're doing and will patiently answer questions about the menu. In other words, you don't have to be a regular to feel comfortable. Both the self-serve condiment area and the unisex bathroom are clean and tidy. Every local person I've met had time me I *had* to eat at the Red Cup. In a downtown filled with great locally-owned/operated dining establishments, this is the one place everything agreed is a winner. Be ready: the setting is wonderfully eclectic. There are a few tables likely salvaged from local yard sales along with several overstuffed chairs and a couple of couches that obviously required done creative repairs before they re usable. What's on the menu? Specials are posted at the end of the cooler, sandwiches and stuff are on the chalkboard on the wall, and drink options are on another chalkboard rescued from child's playroom. I enjoyed a turkey and bacon panini on eight-grain bread. Wonderfully delicious. This is the kind of place you want to come and stay a while and I'm surprised to be here at noon and not find the place packed.
