However, if you're a lover of all the assortments of meat that is possible you come to the right place! From fine cuts of beef, to the tenderness of pork and the cluckiness of chicken this place can't be beat in their selection. This is definitely not the supermarket butcher shop with all that FDA approved mandate crude that makes no sense. That is not to say I don't doubt they the cuts they provide are just as safe if they came out of a sterile laboratory. All the butcher are professional and wear gloves. Honestly everything looks just as clean if not better than what I see in Chinatown NYC. What drove me to come here was the burning need for Korean short ribs and sadly all the major supermarkets disappointed me. I don't know why they bother saying they're sold out when i NEVER SEEN IT. Not at Joe's, they got the full ribs just begging to be cut up to what you want. You get the individual attention you need as there are enough butchers to take care of everyone and waiting isn't too long at all. Also when I said they were professional, the butcher who helped me knew what I wanted and what I didn't want when I pointed to ribs that were meant for soups. He kindly pointed me to the right one and cut them the way I wanted, Korean BBQ style! Woo hoo! Also at $4.99 a lb, I got my fill with 3lbs of it. I also picked myself up 2lbs of Ribeye @ $5.99 a lb also cut to perfection and 2lbs of Chicken Wings @ $2.29 a lb. You simply can't beat the price and being able to pick and choose. Fast service and quality meats makes this the place I'll keep on my list to get my carnivore fill. So if you have the same needs, make your stop here....if you want vegetables or fruits, best to look elsewhere perhaps outside where there's a truck that's occasionally there to sell produce. read more

I love having a butcher shop almost as much as I love saying I have a butcher shop. While my friends go to big supermarkets to buy steaks, I just stroll down to my butcher and have them carve off a few fresh ones. The steaks are great, the concept is great, and the location and prices are really great. The place is a little intimidating if you don't speak Spanish (which I don't), but while everyone in the place is shouting in Spanish numbers, I've never come across an employee that isn't quick to help in English and quick to notice a fearful look on your face if you don't know what the heck is happening at the counter. Grab a number on your right when you first walk in... that's the number for the "beef counter". There's somehow a different numbering system for the chicken/poultry counter and I haven't figured out how that works, but I'm usually in there for steak so haven't needed to yet. When you get up to the beef counter, expect crowds and just watch the number on the display. The butchers behind the counter will yell out the number being served in Spanish a couple times. If they don't get any response, they'll shout once in English so be ready to jump in there when you hear it. If you hesitate they'll move on. Good news is that if you get skipped, they'll happily come back to you with a smile as long as you jump in there and speak up. The prices (probably 20-30% cheaper than supermarket), quality (fresh cuts), and selection (where else can you get ox tail?) are excellent and earn this place a cool 5 stars! read more

Super-fresh meats and poultry at ridiculously low prices. Friendly, helpful staff, and a great variety of products. I love living near Joe's! Every time I visit Joe's, they're busy. The staff handles orders quickly and with a smile, and will cut your meat to order. The counter guys speak English, but ordering in Spanish will get you a bigger smile. As I said above, the prices are ridiculously cheap. Lean ground beef is about half the cost of what Stop 'n Shop charges, and you know it's been ground fresh on premises that day; no worries that your meat was ground somewhere in Iowa, chemically treated, and trucked out to you over the course of a week. Two beautifully trimmed, large filets mignon? $4! The poultry counter is amazing. Looking at how deep the chicken is stacked in the case, one is amazed to realize that they can actually turn over that volume, but they truly do, because their prices and quality are top-notch. There's also a limited produce selection, but it's all fresh and clean. I can't say enough about how awesome Joe's is. I've made converts of folks who live as far away as Attleboro. I called all over town and not a single place could get me some prairie oysters (bull testicles). This place delivered. Incredible. Same story for quails. Same story for a whole duck. Same story for octopus. These are the unconventional cuts and less than fully appreciated animals that one can only find at a butcher like this. Granted its mostly frozen, but still...at least they were there. Cow tongue and pork belly were both fresh though. You can have the fresh meat cut to order. Nowhere else in Providence can match this place's prices. The service is a little rough with the language barrier, but pointing works great and they have a number system that makes the yelling of orders out less chaotic. The GREATEST factor to consider about this meat market however is the turnaround. Other meat markets that pre-package you wonder for how long they've been sitting out and you wonder how often the meat in their display cases get pulled and replaced with new planks. Joe's is ALWAYS crowded and b/c of that you rest assured that what you're getting is fresh product with low turnaround time. Just moved to Providence/Federal Hill, was frustrated with the lack of grocery stores. Saw good reviews for this local butcher, got my hopes up. Worst quality meat I have ever bought. Chicken Breasts: Came from one of the major mass-produced chicken farms. About 2-3x the size of a normal breast. Flavorless - bleached out and watered down. Injected with a ton of saltwater to inflate the weight, which rendered the meat chewy and rubbery no matter which method of cooking was used. Was seriously unedible - ended up throwing out ~8lbs of it. Pork Chops: Were spoiled within 48 hours of purchase. 2-3lbs thrown out. Ground Beef: Cooked immediately after purchase, was OK. No label for fat percentage - by the way it cooked, guessing 75%/25%. The rest of the store was filled with the cheapest brands available. Nothing wrong with that - but the prices were equal or higher than diligently shopping at Whole Foods. I'd love to be supporting small, local businesses - but there is nothing small or local about this place. Mass-produced, pre-packaged, hormone-riddled bullsh!t. If you want to support local, might as well buy your meat at Walmart, and donate an equal amount to a local food bank - will still be cheaper AND better quality. read more

It's nice to be able to walk to the butcher shop, and Joe's prices simply can't be beat. The butchers and the cashiers are all extremely hospitable, and despite a slight language barrier, I always get what I want without much trouble. I've never had a problem with the meat I've purchased here. It smells fine and tastes good, and as I said, you can't beat the prices. As mentioned before, this is a butcher shop. Your steaks are cut to order, as thin or thick and numerous as you desire. Why three stars? The atmosphere. Sometimes, it can get REALLY packed in here, with a crowd that is less than courteous. Sometimes the lines are quite long, and the wait is exacerbated by people mindlessly bowling you over for a position in the checkout line, running a wheeled basket over your foot (with these floors? Gross!), standing their crying, drooling kids on the shelving (Gross!). The guys at the chicken counter, while sweet and patient, will get chicken slime all over the outside of the plastic bag and hand it to you with no warning or protection. Prepare yourself by grabbing a paper towel from the dispenser to your upper left. Better yet, bring some hand wipes. The biggest problem I have with the place is the cleanliness. The coolers need a good wiping-out. It smells of bleach in here, but the use of said bleach isn't necessarily evident. All-in-all, this place hacks it (hehe) way better than the Manton Stop & Shop or the Eagle Square Price Rite. Just what the neighborhood needs. read more

I really wanted to like this place and become a regular customer, but so far it's not working out. First visit was last week. Based on the strength of the reviews on this site, I went by Joe's to pick up our Christmas prime rib. It's a cut I have prepared many times in the past, and an easy one at that. Sadly, my eight lb. boneless roast was probably the toughest, fattiest, most gristly piece of beef I've ever come across. Large parts were simply inedible. I mean, I'm in my mid-40s and I'm not as tough as that beef was. A real letdown. The only reason I'm even giving the place two stars is for the friendly service and large variety of meats available. I will give the place one more try, and reconsider this review. Let's hope it was a one-time screwup. read more

Joe's can be chaotic and has an insurance nightmare parking situation, but if you want inexpensive meat cut to your exact specification, this is a pretty good option. don't forget to grab a meat or chicken counter ticket, or you'll just be standing around for longer than you need to be. read more

I love this place. They have great meats and pultry, specifically stuff that may be a little harder to find (cuts for "ethnic" dishes). I've gotten the best cuts of steak here...only beaten by some of the best restaurants in Providence. So if you are looking for some great cuts for the grill or a party pack (chicken, hot dogs, etc.) for your cookout, this is your place. Tip: It looks like a butcher shop (read: lots of raw meat and cold) and it is predominantly Spanish-speaking. But everyone is super helpful and speaks English. Me and my boyfriend came in To purchase a meat package and from the moment we asked the guy behind the counter had a fishy attitude. My boyfriend is Spanish so I don't think they knew that as they talked crap about him and I. Very unprofessional it was a huge mistake and we should have waited until Monday and went to CENTRAL MEAT MARKET where the quality and prices are much better. Wow, you have to make a trip to Joe's Meat Market on Westminster. It's like a Job Lot for meat. You just won't believe the prices, and everything FRESH. Walk in and immediately take a number for the meat counter (take another number if you want chicken). Just about no one there speaks English... at least not while they are there. The butchers are like artists, romancing the meat as they slice it. So fun to watch. It's cramped and a little confusing, but you can get a filet mignon for $3 and I'm not kidding. Consider the $20 you'd spend in a restaurant and it feels like you are stealing! I've never seen meat cheaper at the grocery stores, not even on sale. Worth the effort, especially if you are having a rib party or making chicken for a crowd. I cooked off 10 pounds of drumsticks for a picnic and it hardly cost a thing. After visiting Joe's Meats on Westminster, I'm gonna tell all my friends about it. Especially my Barbecue Pit Boy Brother. Joe's is awesome. Read some of these reviews about Joe's. I ordered a 24oz. rib eye and watched in awe as the dude sharpened the knife and artfully cut the steak in front of me. He asked me first, "How thick? One inch? I replied, "inch and a quarter!!!" Exceedingly rude staff. I used to go there all the time as it was in walking distance. But each visit I always left feeling... dissatisfied. Disconcerted with their product and with the attitudes of their staff. Haven't gone back. The meat is probably filled with Antibiotics and other chemicals you don't want anyways. I go to Joe's a few times a year...usually because I want nice, meaty short ribs! A guy at the door mans the tickets for the meat counter (there's a separate poultry counter that is never as busy), so you're "in line" as soon as you step in the door. There's always a wait, but there are tons of guys behind the counter (they are always so friendly and jolly) so the line moves quickly. I've found lunch time to be the busiest. ANYWAY, a huge variety of different meat and cuts and they will custom cut them for you. I got 7 pounds of short ribs today and he trimmed them and sliced them up for me. The prices are low...averaging around $4/lb some in the $2 range but I didn't see anything above $7. The middle of the store has spices and seasonings (I found my favorite Jamaican hot curry powder today!!!) and cases towards the front have dairy products and a few veggies, although this certainly wouldn't be where I'd buy such things. You won't be finding prime cuts or anything free range or grass fed here so if that's your jam go to Whole Foods and pay $18/pound for ribeyes :) read more
