3rd time getting bad hamburger meat in 3 months! Me and my family have been going to armando's since Westminster st. My mother and the owner would talk all the time, the kids also knew my mom. We have all shopped at the store through the decades! But recently every time I by hamburger it goes bad within 2 days. I take it home and immediately freeze it and when I thaw it out, it is no good. If I wait 2 days after buying it, it goes bad. As much as food cost we shouldn't have to buy meat that is on it's way bad or have to rush to cook so called fresh cut meats. Two reasons; First, it is inexpensive (I find meat it as much as a couple of dollars cheaper a pound) and second the selection of cuts is excellent. If you want a cut of beef, pork, chicken, lamb, goat, etc. they have it. This is not your typical market. There are limited selections of vegetable, canned products and spices. I purchased a pack of chicken thighs from Armando's on Monday. I put it in my refrigerator until Tuesday when i got my freezer bags so i could wash and repackage it. When i opened the package, let me just say I wanted to vomit. The smell was horrible. I called to let them know and they said they would refund my money; however, the receipt was in the bag that i threw away on Monday and they would not refund my money. I will no longer purchase any meat from here. That meat had been long spoiled. Terrible!!! Let me add... I have been here on and off over the years and I didn't have a problem. I love, love, LOVE Armando's! Besides it being incredibly cheap, the meat is second to none. Even the beef chuck ($2.50/lb) is incredible. You can come in here and get three hefty steak filets for $7. You can get an entire meal for about $12. I'm lucky enough to live across the street from this place so I come here all the time. From the outside, you think.... Bodega? Sure they've got a lot of Goya products, but between the meat and chicken counters and the full-on grocery store, it's a whole lot more than you expect. The meat counter takes up the entire back wall, and is loaded with marinated meats, kabobs, and all different types of sausages and chicken wings. They've got weird stuff like "burnt goat" too, but I'm not that adventurous. Bonus... they have a little deli in the hallway towards the back entrance where you can get sandwiches and different types of lunch. I love Armando's. The meat is always amazing, the produce selection is large and always fresh, they have fresh bread, a cooler section, cereal.. pretty much everything you need. This place is my absolute jam. Buying meat at a supermarket is just not really appealing to me. Need something cut, deboned or skinned? The butchers have your back. There's no feeling bad over a request because the place is busy, and there's no sass from the butchers here -- I've had other butchers give me the, "why do you want me to debone this chicken if you can already buy it boneless for $XX more". The butchers here fully expect to spend some time tending to each customer. The wait can be long (don't expect to get in and out in under 1 hr) but they have literally every cut of meat you could ever request for very low prices. Smoked pork and poultry items too! Get your bacon sliced just the way you like it, for $4/lb. Oh, grab a loaf of Puerto Rican bread next to checkout. You won't be disappointed. Not too sure how you are to review a meat market but here goes. I always find it there are an abundance of selections both in the beef and chicken counters. You come in you take a number and when your number is called, which of the person behind the counter what you want. It's kind of hectic and for me slightly stressful because I don't want people behind me too wait as I make quick critical decisions. They have a lot of hard to fine Spanish and African products at a much better price than the grocery store. Great butcher shop. There are always workers at the band saws furiously cutting all cuts of meat. Somehow they seem to have all of their fingers intact. I don't eat any meat anymore, but I really miss Armando's NY strip cut thick. They also have a cafe area with prepared foods and snacks for hungry shoppers. It's the kind of place where everyone speaks Spanish, and the meat is sold by the tens of lbs. Also, I swear they sell dinosaur meat here. Really excellent meat selection at great prices. The meat clerks are really nice. The cashiers at the front could be nicer. Making ramen broth is one of the most challenging things to do. Not that it's actually hard to cook but the ingredients are not always easy to come by. First off, tonkotsu broth requires a fairly large amount of pork hock (pork feet). The thick richness of the soup comes from the fact that the cartilage and skin melts away and becomes part of the soup. Usually I go to Stop and Shop but of course today of all days they didn't have what I was looking for. So quickly I did a yelp search and guess what, Armando and Sons popped up. While not much to look at from the outside or really the inside, they will have all parts of the animal that you may be looking for that other places will not carry. When I say they have leg of cow, it's the entire leg. Not sure what that is used for but it was quite the sight to see! Most of their food is fresh but there's always a long line. If you are willing to get fresh frozen food, you can skip the line and still get what you are looking for. While most of the ingredients and foods in here are South American oriented, there are definitely Asian foods here as well. Plenty of parking and open late. Just bought some turkey wings and necks from this place and it wasn't fit for human consumption, matter of fact I wouldn't have gave it to a dog. It was just plain old nasty and funky, as if the meat had been frozen and thawed several times over. The necks were a dark grey and the wings were so pale, not pink and fresh. In the trash it goes. There is quite a few produce options but the quality just didn't seem there, you are better off getting all your meats and seafood and you won't be disappointed. Armando's is my place to go, you'll never see me inside a stop and shop since I discovered this place. All my meat and most of my other ingredients I get there. The boys behind the counter are the friendliest people I know, they smile and joke with you, cut your meat in any way you want and always tell you "See you tomorrow!" If you can avoid the place on the first week of the month, do that, it's a nightmare in there, it's just so busy. The cafeteria is -delicious- the empanadas are great and the rest is pretty awesome for post meat-shopping lunch. Armando's used to be one of those semi-secret bargain spots that you'd share only with your closest friends for fear that if the word gets out, prices will rise exponentially. Fast forward 3 years from my first visit, and alas, the word is indeed out, the parking lot is newly paved and striped, the lines have grown even looooooooooonger, and the prices have come up to be comparable to mass market grocers like Shaw's or Stop & Shop.
