This was our first time at Joey Chops. While we were driving up from Virginia, we tried stopping at a popular establishment for a cheesesteak, but the line went forever. So we made a 4pm reservation at Joey Chops. It had always been on a list of things to visit when we are in the area. Parking is a large lot shared with various businesses. We did not have a problem locating a parking spot. Once we were parked we walked in and were seated immediately. The interior is dark in what I call a main dining area which was to the left. But to the right is the bar area and the outdoor seating. That area was bright. Could be because the door was open to the outside dining patio. The dishes were cute. The seating was comfortable. The whole aesthetic was met in many ways, even to the bathrooms. The bathrooms were large, comfortable and they offered extras like lotions and mints. Our waiter Joey was amazing. He was very attentive. The other staff were great as well. From other waiters, waitresses, kitchen staff and food runners. They were all helpful, kind and attentive. We ordered various items off the menu including dessert. I had the She Crab Soup. They had a nice take on it. I live in Virginia so it was a different taste than what I have there, but it was delicious. My son devoured his grilled Mediterranean Bronzino. He had no complaints. The portions were decent. My husband had the Prime Delmonico. He loved it and it was cooked perfectly. I over heard the table behind us thinking about ordering it as well. I almost turned around and said to order it because my husband did and loved it. But, I stayed in my lane hehe. For sides we have the lobster Mac n cheese, Brussels sprouts and the blue crab fried rice. Ok, that fried rice was pretty dang good. I was surprised by it honestly. I'd get it again. The lobster Mac n cheese had good chunks of lobster in it and it was perfectly cheesy. The Brussels sprouts had a sweet flavor to it, from the I think pomegranate glaze. It was not overly sweet, it complemented the sprouts well. Last but not least, dessert. I ordered the cheesecake cart experience. Let me just say my cheesecake expectations have gone up. Ha! My cheesecake better be wheeled out on a cart with all the toppings. The cheesecake itself was creamy and sweet. It was the first slices as well. It was fresh. The toppings were perfect, chocolate, fresh whipped cream, strawberries and a brûléed top. The bruleed topping was my go to immediately. We also had an ice cream flight. The pistachio was a fan favorite. Pricing was on point and expected for this type of establishment. I honestly feel the food and presentation meet the cost. This place isn't a 3 but going by my other reviews, it's really not a 4 - in fact overall we were a little disappointed. Everything was good but with a bill including tip to be over $260 for the two of us, it better be more than just good. Our server Cory was very friendly and informed and the place itself looks nice. The Bread with dipping sauce was good. The Green Garlic Escargot was beautifully plated (as were all of our choices) but the sauce needed a "kick" and the Focaccia Points served with it were greasy. The star of the night was the delicious She Crab Soup with Dry Sherry, containing a generous amount of crab. The Wagyu Teres Major Steak with Bordelaise Sauce was a nice serving of sliced steak. It was flavorful but could have been any cut of Prime meat - nothing that made us think we must get this again. We had the same feeling with the Lollipop Lamb Chops with Eggplant, Tomato and Soy Glaze. Both sides, the Whipped Potatoes and the Creamed Spinach, were good. The restaurant provided us with free delicious Profiteroles because we were celebrating an Anniversary, that we enjoyed with Cappuccinos. I came here for a work dinner one night. We were still waiting for our party so we stood by the bar and got drinks while we wait for the others to arrive. I got this fantastic fall highball drink. It was delicious :) We then sat down once everyone showed up. We ordered a variety of appetizers including lobster dumplings (yes amazing but would have loved more filling overall), grilled scallops on the half shelf (pretty good), lollipop lamb chops (amazing char and seasoned very well!) and green garlic escargot ( I couldn't eat it since it has pine nuts but my coworker said it needed seasoning and it was swimming in sauce). So far a good start of food overall. Our waitress was very attentive and the chef even came out personally talked to me and another coworker that has dietary restrictions. I would say service is top notch we were taken care of very well! After the appetizers it took a long time (40-45 mins) for our entrees to come out. I go the prime New York strip which came pickled radishes. For my sides I decided to go with the lobster Mac n cheese and garlic Parm brococolini. The steak was cooked a perfect medium rare, the fat was rendered very well. Needed a tad more seasoning but other than that this was the best steak I've had in a very long time! First off I love the ambiance. We were there at night. It was dark and softly lit. Quiet and open, but it still felt cozy and intimate. The wine, the salad, oysters, whipped potatoes - it was all good. The 6 ounce filet mignon was a perfect cut, juicy with a lot of flavor. It was the best steak I have had here in PA since moving here 7 years ago. The only downside of the night was dessert. However I gave JC all the stars because other than this night (Valentine's Day) I rarely order dessert, so I wouldn't stop going someplace based off their dessert. I'm posting a picture because you have to see how it came to us. The strawberries not only looked gross, but were gross and the cheesecake was falling apart - this is nit picky though. Overall, I would gave this place a 4.5. I went here with a friend who also lives with people who are not steak eaters. I enjoy a good steak from time to time so we thought we would give this place a try because it wasn't too far and they had some of our favorites. We started with snails and the onion soup. My dining partner enjoyed her soup. The snails came in a bubbling cast iron with lots of butter and spinach. They were tender and accompanied by some toast that was a bit over buttered. We both ordered the teres major, a cut of steak not usually found on menus. This is a delightful cut, not quite as tender as a filet mignon but much more flavorful. It comes with no sides (we ordered a salad and creamed spinach- both good) but a bit of watercress and pickled onion which I could have done without. This was perfectly cooked medium for my dining partner and medium rare for me. For dessert we got a cheesecake (there is a cart with lots of toppings you can choose) and the salted caramel cookie with ice cream. Both better than average. First, the best part of this restaurant was the service. Well done and we were treated well with very attentive servers. They did not have a lot of people in the restaurant, so we were given great care. The food however was shockingly bad. We spent $375 with tip for the three of us and that included one glass of wine. Very expensive for below average food. We were going to go into Philly to our favorite steak house but changed our minds because of the weather. Thought we would give this steak house a try since it was local. We had two Steak Dianes that had a funny taste to the sauce. Steak was cooked to desired temp but was really not worth the $52.00 each. The worst part of the meal was the $92 dry aged Rib eye. My husband was really looking forward to it and if possible, it had zero flavor. I mean I cook this all the time on the grill and this was not anything as good as what I buy and grill from the butcher, for half the price. Vegetables were the best part of the meal. Even the mashed potatoes that came with our Steak Diane were odd and almost tasted bad to eat. In my whole life I never wrote a bad review like this before but I think if you spent this much money, most people would be disappointed. I want local business to stay around and that shopping center has had so much turnover that I hope this review helps them get back on track.
