Let me start out this review by saying I did not actually get Lasik from Joffe, only a consult. I went to Joffe for my first Lasik consult about a year ago. I ended up going with another clinic for the actual procedure for several important reasons: - Their advertising is misleading. - I didn't feel like I got as much information here as the other clinic. - I felt very pressured into making a surgical appointment right away. - Their pricing and long-term guarantees aren't as good as other clinics. - They told me I was a perfect candidate for Lasik when another clinic told me the safer option was PRK. I cancelled my Lasik procedure appt here immediately after I had a second consult elsewhere. The next day I got a call from a care manager at Joffe asking why I had cancelled. I explained the circumstances, citing the results from the other clinic recommending PRK. She told me in her Kim Kardashian valley girl voice "Honey, you do not need PRK." Excuse me, but you do not call clients "honey." I felt that was completely unprofessional and belittling. Also, you are not the physician, so you have no right to say whether I need Lasik or PRK. Weeks later I got another call from Joffe asking if I had any questions or concerns, and I told them that the final straw for me was this care manager rubbing me the wrong way - based on the completely generic reaction of the woman, I doubt there was any follow up. All in all, I got a bad vibe from this place and their pushy sales methods really gave me the feeling they were trying to take advantage of me, whether or not they were. I had Lasek 10 years ago and began to notice a decline in my left eye within the last few years. Sure enough, I was at 20/70. Given the frequent headaches and the fact that I was back in glasses, I decided to have the PRK procedure. I went to Whiting and Joffe and felt much more comfortable at Joffe. Dr. Whiting's office is beautiful, however, you don't get the personal touch and I felt like any other customer. The day before my procedure Dr. Heuer actually texted me letting me know she was excited to see me. She also answered questions I had the next day (Saturday). I went to Joffe for LASIK last spring, and wanted to wait until I was fully recovered to write a review. First of all, my experience at Joffe was really incredible. So incredible, I refer anyone who asks about it in a heartbeat, and so far, two of my friends have gotten LASIK performed there. So if you're too lazy to read the rest of my review, know you're in good hands. In the past, some a-hole eye doctor had told me that I wasn't eligible for lasik since my vision was so poor (-7.75 contact lens prescription). I mentioned this on the phone booking my consultation, and they assured me that typically doesn't qualify/unquality you - only the shape of your eye, density of your cornea, things like that, could really affect your eligibility. So, good news to begin. It took several weeks to get the initial appointment. The consultation is about 2 hours long, including an eye dilation, so keep that in mind as you try to balance your work day (Excel + dilated eyes = trippy). When I had my surgery, if you booked within 4 weeks of your consultation, you received a $300 discount. I imagine they run this offer all/most of the time, but I'm not sure. During your consultation, they prep you by making you watch videos of the surgery in animated form. I mostly tuned these out - for me, ignorance was bliss. Seeing a cartoon eye get cut open by a cartoon scalpel is still frightening. I know they're trying to set you up for what surgery will be like, but if you're squeamish (but want to do it anyway) like me, this method kind of worked. If I truly knew what was going to happen, I'm not entirely sure I could have gotten on the surgery bed. I booked my appointment for a Friday morning, which was probably the best time to do it. Your eyes heal insanely quickly, but it was nice to have a couple days to recover and rest since they're so dry afterward. Joffe really works to get you relaxed - a cup of tea, a dose of Valium, and a massage chair (facing a TV screen with an aquarium scene) really did it for me. I was literally dozing off in the half hour before my surgery. Once I got on the table though, my adrenaline piqued. Keep in mind, you're awake for the surgery, and you have to, you know, keep your eyes open (well, an apparatus holds them open, but still) and watch as they cut them open and shoot lasers at them. I was incredibly scared and nervous, but this would have been the same anywhere. My experience had been pleasant so far, and I trusted them, but regardless, overall knives and lasers in your eye is truly terrifying. I feel like they made it as calm and quick as possible, and told me each step of the way what was going on, what was going to happen next, and how long it would take - which I was really impressed with. Once I sat up from my surgery, I could already see better than when I laid down - freaky! Boyfriend drove me home, where I popped my own Ambien (they do not provide this service, unlike the Valium) and slept from about 11 am - 6 pm. When I awoke, all was well and I could see pretty well. Joffe books a follow up about 24 hours post-surgery - by the next morning, they measured me at almost 20/20. One month later, I was at 20/20, which was a huge improvement over my truly terrible vision before. Everyone reacts differently, but I have had absolutely no complications. My eyes aren't overly dry, and while I still see "halos" at night, they're not too bothersome. BTW, my two friends are also incident-free. I had an incredibly strong prescription when I first came to Joffe. By 24 hours after my procedure I went from 20/1200 to 20/30 and my vision will only continue to improve as I heal. The staff at Joffe are some a kind kindest, good hearted people I have ever met in a medical center. They share your excitement with you and calm your nerves when needed. I cannot express enough how much I would recommend Joffe and LASIK. They helped me set up a payment plan and were absolutely understanding when this was an issue for me. Both my husband and I have had LASIK eye surgery through Joffe. He, being the more impulsive of us, heard an ad, went in for their free consultation and signed up for his surgery that day. They were running a $495 per QUALIFIED eye LASIK special if you signed up that month. One of his eyes qualified, the other did not (generally the qualification factors have to do with astigmatism and corneal thickness). Bing-bang-boom. He went in, got it done, had a great experience. His vision is somewhere around 20/10 in one eye and 20/15 in the other. I, of course, waited a year to make sure he didn't go blind before scheduling my own appointment. :) I ended up not qualifying for the $495 price, but for the $995 price--which is still REALLY cheap for LASIK. Here's the thing. Other eye places will tell you, "You get what you pay for!" to justify charging $2,500+ per eye. I heard it all the time. It made me super paranoid, so I looked into my doctor (Dr. Whiting--who is not longer with the clinic) and I looked into the results and the clinic definitely wasn't using cut-rate procedures. It's wise to investigate super-low pricing--sometimes it could be too good to be true--but in this case, it wasn't an issue. I now have 20/15 vision in both eyes. Better than I *ever* saw with contacts or glasses. The whole experience was great. The staff--from the receptionist to the tech to the doctor to the assistants--were all invested in making you feel safe and comfortable. They were extremely open about risk factors, side effects and in answering any questions I had. (And I did ask the doctor if he had ever made anyone go blind. He laughed and said that no, he had not--there have been occasions where a second adjustment surgery is necessary, but he and this particular clinic had never had any detrimental complications.) They give you valium if you want or need a little calming down (they're going to cut into your eye!), put you in a relaxing massage chair, make sure you're comfortable, etc. The surgery itself was surprisingly fast. They're very reassuring throughout--explaining that you can't accidentally move your eyes during the process, the machine has automatic safeguards, you're doing a great job, etc. I'm not going to lie--it's scary as hell for the 5 seconds where your eye is open but your vision goes dark. It only lasts a moment, and they're constantly explaining what is going on as it's happening, so you don't freak out and think you've been blinded. AFTER surgery: They are extremely good with follow-up. You have several set appointments--but if you're feeling uncomfortable or worried, they have a 24-hour doctor line you can call off-hours, the staff itself is knowledgeable, and if you want to come in for extra appointments or to have them check something out, that's included in the cost. I'm going to give you my review and a description of the process. So, spoiler alert. From start to finish, my experience with Joffe has been amazing. I shopped around, went to Lasik Plus, Joffe, and Whiting and of the three, I felt most comfortable with the staff and facilities at Joffe. The Whiting Clinic was very similar, but it felt less personal and I didn't like the location of the surgery room itself. So I decided on Joffe. I chose... wisely. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. Obviously they are selling you a service, but they go out of their way to make sure you feel incredibly comfortable. I mean, it's YOUR EYES. You don't F around with your eyes, am I right? I arrived the day of in the pouring rain and was the 2nd appointment of the day. They re-measured my eyes and got me in a private room very quickly. We handled payment, popped a couple valium, and sat in a nice massage chair while I waited for my laser eyes. Before I knew it, I was up. Dr. Heuer (who is AMAZING, btw) dropped enough numbing drops into my eye to make an elephant feel nothing, took a quick look, and got me under the laser. My stomach had been in knots, but between her incredibly genuine, kind demeanor and the valium, I was in a much better place than I had been 15 minutes previously. The procedure itself goes something like this: Lay back. They cover one eye. They tape your eyelids back. They put a tool in that keeps your eye open. There's a green light to stare at and you can peripherally see the red lasers. Then they put a suction onto your eye and everything fades out. I saw green and red fireworks while the machine cuts the cornea. Suction comes off, corneal flap flipped back, laser goes to town. Smells like burnt hair if you've ever wondered what cooking your eyeballs smells like. Then a nice cool flush with some liquid. The doctor does some final smoothing of your cornea and VOILA! Onto the second eye, you sit up, and you've got magical vision! From the time I entered the surgery room to the time I walked out and hugged my wife through emotional tears was 10 minutes tops. TOPS. Dr. Heuer gave me a big hug after (and the next morning again when I saw her for my follow up). And throughout the whole process she was talking me through it. She's got the kind of voice that could make you feel at ease with anything. It's 3 days later now and my vision is great. I couldn't see 20/20 on the follow up the next morning, but my prescription was also pretty aggressive. I see just as well, if not better, than I ever did with glasses or contacts and I hear it's going to continue to improve as my eyes heal. I purchased 2 Groupons for $500 for half off of LASIK services at Joffe. They claimed the surgery started at $495 and the max would be $1195 per eye. I was so excited to finally have the opportunity to get my eyes corrected. I was first seen by a technician who did an initial evaluation of my eyes and set me down in front of a video. Then Dr. Johnson met with me. At first, he thought I was someone else because he said he was given the wrong chart. Mind you, there were maybe 3 patients in the office at this time as it was a late appointment. He ran a few more tests and told me I was a better candidate for PRK. He then explained that would be $1195 per eye. I was prepared for that. I asked him if having psoriasis would affect my diagnosis. He didn't have an answer for this and said he would check with Dr. Foley on Thursday. I thought that was odd he didn't know, since I had been warned it might be a factor. I then met with the manager of the office, who set up my appointments and went over the expenses. There was a little confusion here as she was the one to explain to me that they only do one eye at a time, so this would involve 2 surgeries plus 2 follow up visits for each eye. Still not that bad a deal for better vision. On Thursday I got a call from Dr. Johnson asking me to call him because there had been a change in my diagnosis. I tried to return his call, however he'd given me a wrong number. I located my call log and returned his call around 4pm and had to leave a message. I was anxious to find out what he had learned, thinking in the back of my mind it couldn't be good news. I called again on Friday morning and was told he was out of the office for the day. The receptionist said she couldn't leave her desk to get my file. I asked if anyone else could call me and tell me. She said she would have someone else call. Around 1pm, I received a call from another person at Joffe, returning my message from the night before. I asked if she could tell me what Dr. Johnson needed to tell me. Again, she didn't have my file. Again I asked if another doctor could call me. She said she would try. On Monday, I again called the office and was told that Dr. Johnson would be in later. Finally Dr. Johnson called and gave me the bad news that people with psoriasis do not make good candidates. Ultimately, I am relieved that they were professional enough to tell me they did not feel comfortable performing the surgery. I would rather be safe than sorry. However, I have to wonder about the experience level of Dr. Johnson. And I have to wonder if I hadn't brought up the subject of my psoriasis would he still have discussed my case with Dr. Foley. All I am saying here is be sure you dot your I's and cross your T's with this. If you get a funny feeling about anything, be sure to speak up. And just now (hours after I posted this review), I received an email reminder for my appointment next week. I wonder how organized this company is. read more

My mindset on LASIK for the last several years has been based on a scene from The Simposons when Ned Flanders says "It's all well and good until the 10 year mark when your eyes fall out"... So since I now know several people who have had LASIK more than 10 years ago and they still have their eyes I decided to take the plunge :) The entire staff at Joffe were awesome from the receptionist to the assistants, Dr. Hallstrom, and Dr. Heuer who did the actual procedure. All my questions were answered and any fears I had were qualmed. Dr. Hallstrom was really great and made me feel much more comfortable about the entire process. You don't meet Dr. Heuer until the day of the procedure but she is overly sweet and you trust her immediately after meeting her. The procedure is quick and relatively painless. The worst part of the whole thing was waking up from the nap after (TAKE THE VALIUM THEY OFFER!) Your eyes will feel really dry and like there is something in both of them that you really want to get out. After you open them enough for eye drops everything is much better. The next morning when you go back for your check up your eyes are already better than they have ever been and you giggle because you can see every leaf on the trees. It's distracting. It has been a little over two weeks and I am still so excited about it all. If you are on the fence, DO IT. You won't regret Lasik or going to Joffe for it! read more

I had the worst experience at Joffe in Mpls. The place is a zoo and the staff doesnt communicate. The day of surgery they told me I wasnt a candidate for anything (after a week of glasses) and doctor Foley didnt even bother to tell me himself. I dont care how cheap it may be, you cant trust your eyes to them especially with only a 12 month guarantee. I drove down the road to Whiting and was taken care of the very next day...20/800 to 20/20 overnight. Dr. David Whiting and his staff is the best in the business. I have been contemplating getting LASIK for a long time, and after getting it, the only thing I ask myself is why did I wait this long? It is life changing. My experience at Joffe was amazing. Dr. Mark is very friendly and answers any questions you might have. He was there for the preliminary exam. Angelica, one of the techs, was super friendly, and went over the post-op instructions. Dr. Heuer, who performed the procedure is extremely nice. She is very very down to earth, gives you her time. The procedure itself was absolutely painless. I was given some eye drops to numb me. Dr. Heuer walked me through the procedure as she was doing it. It was all over in less than 5 minutes. All you feel is a little pressure when they want to "fix" your eye to stop you from blinking. It's like you push your eye when it's closed. I kept my eyes closed after the procedure was over, went home, slept for 4 hours. When I woke, I WAS ABLE TO SEE WITHOUT GLASSES. It was the most amazing feeling in the world. I continue to put eye drops , I haven't experienced any discomfort. My vision is perfect right now( 3 days after the procedure). This place is horrible! I was paying for both of my eyes to be done with regular Lasik procedure and had to paid up front. After the first examination of all the eyes measurements and another round of measurements before the procedure; it has seem like the staffs and the doctors there don't know what they're doing. My right eye was done okay but after open the flap for my left eye, the doctor decided that my cornea was too narrow and made me come back after a month to do another procedure with PRK. I was so disappointed and pissed off after I talked to my friends who all have Lasik, and doing research. The doctor should have know what kind of procedure is right for my eyes with astigmatism after doing so many measurements. I called the customer service the to complain about the procedure and the doctor. The call director said she is going to have the doctor call me back and it takes days! I had to call them back again to complain and the doctor finally called me back and all he said was there was a complication during the procedure and he has to stop. Why the hell would you not know what kind of procedure is right for me after so many measurements??? There was no apology what for ever!! So, after 3 weeks of waiting for my left eye's procedure, I came back to the office and the front desk girl told me that my appointment has been reschedule to the week after. I was like wtf?? You guys didn't even let me know anything about this. The girl told me that they left me a message about it but I did not receive any message about rescheduling. They just went ahead and canceled my appointment without my confirmation. What a horrible customer service!! I'm soooo pissed and I was very close to suing them after they messed up my left eye. If they mess up again, I'm so going to sue them. I would not recommend this place for anybody. This place is cheaper than other places so I thought it was a good deal. I had my procedure done a month ago, and I couldn't be more pleased with the results. My eyesight is better than what it used to be with glasses. It was intimidating for me to do this-- from a price perspective and the fact that lasers are beamed onto your eyeballs. Both concerns were put to ease by the staff at Joffe. Had my Lasik procedure the day after Thanksgiving, that was my Black Friday shopping, better vision. Over all from the consultation to the day of the surgery the staff was amazing. Felt great about going through with Lasik as I had chickened out previously 3 times! It has been 6 1/2 weeks since my surgery and although they say I have 20/20 vision I have extremely dry eye. Yes, dry eye is a side effect, but the promises of being able to see perfectly the next day and go about your normal life....well not so much. I can't seem to get the dryness under control and the people at Joffe shrug it off as a normal thing that will heal...in up to 6 months. Well at 7.48 per bottle of eye drops x2 and 14.99 for night drops and 20.00 per month for Restasis, I am very disappointed and frustrated. I cannot drive after dark, can't see past my finger tips, it has disrupted my normaly busy life..... Hopefully things will improve soon, because I am seriously regretting having done it. read more

This was a pretty considerable amount of money I was spending on myself, and with my vision, I wanted to make an educated decision on where I went. Easy process, great staff, and had 20/15 vision the next day at my next day and 3 week follow-up!

I called and scheduled an appointment for a LASIK eye exam for 2pm on Wednesday, September 29th. I showed early, completed the paperwork and began the testing to see if I would be considered for LASIK surgery (I am a "great candidate"). Before the LASIK exam began, I clearly stated that I was there in response to the promotion in the Eugene Weekly advertising $495/eye LASIK surgery. After the testing was completed, the doctor (who was really nice) told me that the price of the procedure is $1,195/eye, to which I responded that I was only there for the promotional $495/eye price. She said that I wouldn't be able to get that price unless I scheduled the procedure on Friday, which I couldn't do because I need to not wear contacts for six days prior the surgery. So I left feeling like Joffe Medi-Center had wasted an hour and a half of my time testing, poking at and dilating my eyes (which really sucks, by the way). I'm a bicyclist and even got a Zipcar so I could make our scheduled appointment. I also left feeling like maybe I read the ad wrong. I took another look at the half-page ad in the Eugene Weekly (Volume 12, Issue 18 - Sept. 22-28) just a moment ago and in large, bold text it says, "Hurry! Call now for details! ACT BY OCT 31ST!" and is repeated in the footer of the ad. I acted on the ad by not only calling to schedule an appointment, but by coming in to get the LASIK eye exam. I would like to schedule the LASIK procedure at the advertised rate of $495 and eye. ----- The above is an email I sent to Joffe Medi-Center in hopes they would come around and give me the advertised rate. They responded by saying that they were sorry I didn't qualify for the $495/eye price, while the doctor said that I did qualify, but just couldn't schedule on Friday. read more
