Johantgen Jewelers worst work ethics and customer service! Brought in my Citizen Capri watch for repair to Johantgen Jewelers in Crystal, MN. It had stopped working and I had replaced the battery. In the process the hands had fallen off. My fault. I dropped the watch off with the instructions to reattach the hands. A few days later when the watch was returned to me: 1. One of the hands was completely missing. 2. I was told the watch was no longer working. 3. The dial number indicators at 1:00 and 3:00 were missing altogether! 4. The stopwatch feature now zeroed to the 3:00 position rather than the 12:00 position. 5. The second hand no longer ticked at the 7:00 through 12:00 second indicator marks on the dial. I returned the watch to Johantgen Jewelers and was told it would cost another $200 in addition to the $35 I had already spent for the original repair! The owner of Johantgen Jewelers is also the watch repair guy. He proceeded to try and lay all of the blame on me for the list of issues that he himself had caused. He became very upset and defensive when I stood my ground, and started yelling at me that it wasn't his responsibility to correct the issues that arose while the watch was in his care. He obviously knows very little about watches, nor how to repair them. He then hung up on me in a rage. I found them to appear "nice", but their business practices lack transparency and I am not sure if they mean to but I think teeter on being exploitative. I went to consign or sell my ring to them. But to consign with them you have to agree to a pretty expenslively priced appraisal. They will not sell or consign for you unless you agree to this high priced appraisal (even if you already had one!) and then after they give you (me in this case) the verbal appraisal they low ball you on what they think they can get for it. Making their original estimate much lower. So people might feel bent over a barrel either paying the high cost ($450) for an appraisal or accept the low offer (minus the cost of the appraisal). They did this to me. I asked for a consignment percentage which the owner ducked and dodged that and then asked for a consignment agreement. He said he'd send me one and then never did. I texted with no response-over two weeks. When I said I would just pay the full appraisal and take my ring back he suddenly responded to me and said how he had found a potential buyer-of course. When I reiterated that I was not interested and said I will pick up my ring he agreed and said I only needed to pay $200 for the verbal appraisal. At first I thought he just didn't do the appraisal in full (which of course he was still building the appraisal price into the consignment reduction) but when I got there his daughter "honored" the $200 but gave me the print out of my appraisal (she seems more honest). after seeing the appraisal I know now it's not that he didn't do it but he didn't want me to see the appraisal! His first verbal appraisal made it seem like my ring was much worse but what he typed up about my ring-glowing reviews! And he didn't want me to see it! Because he was going to use that for other buyers to get him a high price and give me a garbage payout! he valued my ring at $17,800 and was going to tell me he could only give me $2500 minus the appraisal. Laughable. I said exploitative at the beginning because the shop is in a Lower income part of town. People might be hard up for quick cash and they know that people will settle for a low offer to avoid paying the $450 outright. That's not right. I called them on it. read more

I stopped in with my daughter to have a Timex watch band sized. Three other jewelers that advertise watch repair said they could not do it. In hindsight why didn't they just say it's not worth their time. Here at Johantgen they were friendly and kind did not look down on her and her Timex. Fifteen minutes later they had helped her out and the price was beyond fair. This store is worth supporting. Other shops use catchy phrases at Johantgens they do make you feel like family. read more

I went into this jewelry store based on the reviews on Yelp but let me tell you I will never go back here. Now I had contacted Todd before visiting the store about having some solid 14k gold bracelets polished, buffed, etc, three of them. The first thing he told was that he didn't believe they were gold and didn't make the sound gold makes when shaking it in your hand? Say what? Then he told me they're too heavy and that he wasn't interested in buying them, ok, I wasn't selling them. Now I collect gold and never had someone tell me that by simply shaking a bracelet or bracelets in their hand they can tell if it's real gold, the purity of the gold, etc, insanity. I will never go here again and I would never recommend this place either. In short, I have collected a lot of gold throughout the years and most of that pieces I have are custom made, heavy, but I've never heard someone tell me they can tell if a piece is gold by simply shaking or handling it. I have the paperwork for everyone of my pieces and have had them tested. The three 14k bracelets would cost $30,000 if bought retail today, fact. read more
