I read about Ted's Kickin Chicken in a cookbook: North Carolina Back Road Restaurant Recipes. It recommended the Chicken Fried Steak, but that was not on the menu on our visit. This restaurant is on a back road and it is bigger inside than it appeared from the road, but the place was full on Friday at 1 pm. The parking lot is sizeable, but I got the last spot. It is in a gravel lot, so no real "lines" to follow. When we walked in, I couldn't tell if it was seat yourself or wait to be seated. We asked the hostess, who found us a table, but just pointed to it, so I'm still not certain. The food was hit-and-miss for us. The fried half chicken that they had on special was excellent. It came drizzled with a special sauce, which I dipped the chicken into as I pulled it off of the bone. It came with baked beans and potato salad. Both were ok, but didn't taste particularly homemade. The fried chicken is the star here and should not be missed. We had fried pickles for appetizers and they were fine, if not a little oily. They were in a sort of tempura batter and served with a yummy ranch dressing. We did enjoy them. The kids had chicken tenders and chicken tender sandwiches. These were very underwhelming and looked like they were made from frozen tenders, not hand-breaded. These were fine, just not as delicious as the chicken they fried themselves. The very best chicken I ever eaten my life! I heard about this place for years decided to come up to it with my wife. We both ordered a half a chicken I had beans and french fries with my meal. Horrible experience, started out as soon as we walked in. The waitress asked how many I jokingly said 2 and 1/2 because we have a 1 year old in a car seat. She said we'll just pick a seat with an attuide but I tried to explain I was waiting for my husband and she just walked away . We get seated and another waitress comes up, rushes us to order drinks and food. We had to ask for more time twice! We finally just ordered something. When she comes back to the table she tries to refill my tea that I hadn't even taken a sip of! We hurry and eat because we had stuff to do. So my husband goes and pays. While he's paying I asked two different waitresses for something else to drink because I finally tried the tea and it was no sweet what so ever and tasted old! 1 of them brings me back a lid and straw and the other one says yes she will get me a Dr pepper but instead comes back with our dessert and tells me that even though my husband and I just spent 80 bucks at this restaurant that I would have to pay for the drink. Even though I took one small sip from the tea! The music was so loud you couldn't hear anyone! Each waitress was rude! Very unhappy! Im gonna try to get in touch with the owner! You see that girl in that first photo there? Yeah, that is me sippin' sweet tea at Ted's. Okay so we were driving to Yadkin Valley and it was lunch time. I wanted some southern fried chicken because well.. that is what the south is known for, yes? We were looking at places listed on the GPS. Who would NOT want to go to a joint named Ted's Kickin' Chicken? First impressions when we drove by this place and MISSED the parking lot? It looked desolate... dingy even. Anyway, we turned around, I held my breath and we walked in. Dimly lit place, Nascar decor and football playing on the television that was propped up on the corner back wall. We ordered accordingly- my friend a dark meat chopped chicken sandwich that was topped with a mayo based slaw and a slightly spicy sauce on the side. The sandwich was freaking ginoromous. I do not typically use such language... but that is how huge it was. I ordered a half fried chicken. I know it sounds like a lot.. but lets put it this way.. I was expecting the chicken to be cut up like the breast, thigh and leg. It literally was a half chicken. I thought it was going to be a breaded chicken. It was breaded... but extrememly lightly which I was fine with. What kind of threw me was it was dipped in a sauce that resembled buffalo sauce. It was tasty, do not get me wrong, just not what I was expecting at all. Nonetheless, I really enjoyed the sauce it was dipped in, and this half chicken thing was actually just enough. On the way to Yadkin Valley wine country with a friend who was visiting from out of state, we decided to go miles out of the way for an 'authentic North Carolina chicken experience.' Boy howdy, was it worth it. We were a little over dressed since we planned on doing wine tasting, but the waitress was very hospitable, and we got to catch some of the game. The fact that I can get a beer and a chopped chicken sandwich with a plethora of toppings for 3.25 with a good view of the game makes me automatically like this place. If you grew up in the country around little food shacks and miss them, this is the place to go. Previously mentioned, I got the chopped chicken sandwich with dark meat (they give you the option of dark or white, but dark meat is just the kind of gal I am), with mayo, slaw, and this miscellaneous spicy sauce that was delicious. The damn thing was huge and I couldn't finish it. The only complaint I have is that they served the sandwich on a plate that was the exact same size, so I was making a bit of a mess. My friend got half a chicken with a roll and some sweet tea. She was expecting a thick batter and was a little disappointed. I'm not a huge fan of thick batter myself, so the heavily-seasoned, thin and crispy skin was to my liking, and the chicken tasted great. If you're a country gal that moved to the city and miss little places like this, I'd take a visit. I've always wanted to try it because it says kickin chicken. Tonight I finally did and now there's no going anywhere else for chicken. It's that good. Even the white meat is juicy. Mouth watering. To die for. The sauce is really, really, really good. The guy who took our take out order was friendly, polite, fast. The prices are seriously reasonable. So I pop on to 'Teds Kickin Chicken' to pick up an order of 25 hot wings. I get home with only two tiny cups of ranch for dipping and no celery or napkins. I called, to ask if that was standard as I usually get more stuff at other places. The chick on the phone said, "We're not other places." Then hung up on me. A paying customer. The chicken here is amazing for such an unassuming hole-in-the-wall looking place. My husband & I got the Half Chicken, BBQ with Homemade Coleslaw. It was so incredibly tender, juicy and flavorful. My BF got the Wings and she was really happy with them. The fries were very crisp with seasoning on them, and I loved them. We didn't have their famous Chopped Chicken Sandwich but we saw one go by and it's huge! They had a health score of 98: another thing that makes me happy! Am I really the first person to review Ted's? How can that BE!? I guess Yelp hasn't made its way into the two lane highways of the mountains of NC yet... TED'S! You were not only THE place to get wings in town (it was either Ted's or driving an hour to Winston-Salem to get Hooter's), but you were THE ultimate hangout spot for us as teens after a long day in ap calc or a depressing basketball game. If you ever find yourself wandering up 421 N in NC, pull off at the speedway and make your way a couple minutes off the exit to Ted's. It's a grimy little shack off the side of the road. The parking lot doesn't really have designated spots, you just park there. Inside it's old and gross, but the wings are basically the best to be had. Ever. read more

I have tried a lot of different styles of barbecue, it's one of my favorite foods. This makes it easy to spot "from a can" and "store bought sauce". The food was not horrible but nothing to brag about either. Everything seemed very greasy and poorly prepared. The sauce was very common, nothing specially prepared by the restaurant. The facility itself left a lot to be desired. A gravel parking lot that dusted my vehicle when the wind rolled through. The outside looks like a biker bar as does the inside. Located on Statesville Rd (Hwy 115) as you are leaving North Wilkesboro. This is definitely off the beaten path. It has been a staple of the community for over 25 years. The current owned I think has run it 17 (?) years. I have driven by it many times but never at a time I could stop. So today I finally decided to try it. It is an older building with a dirt parking lot. From the outside it it doesn't look like anything special. When you you come inside prepare to be pleasantly surprised. It's is quaint and very clean. The table was quickly cleaned and made ready. The help is friendly and helpful. We ordered the onion rings. Most places you get a few and that's it. Here you get them piled high. They are delicious and hot. Then came the sandwich. A pulled white meat chicken sandwich, with slaw and all the extras. I couldn't believe it. It was at least four inches thick. The only way to eat it was to smash it down. Prepare for a delicious messy meal. The waitress was very attentive making sure I never saw the bottom of the glass. I look forward to returning This is by no means a gourmet meal but excellent food nonetheless. During our visit, there was a constant influx of customers. Mostly older couples and younger families. It is truly a generational place. If you are headed north to Boone or south to wherever on 421 take a detour off the beaten path at Hwy 115. Head towards North Wilkesboro. I grew up in wilkes and this has to be one of my favorite local places. There is nothing on the menu that isn't good and the wings are great. The seasoning makes the fries. The only down side at all is it may take a while to get food. Love it though. Worth the wait. read more

First off I would like too state the following is my personal opinion and nothing in this review should be interpreted as factual statements that serve as conclusions for how you should feel about this business. I'm not sure where to start about how horrible of an experience I've endured at that place this afternoon. I would like to start off by saying I'm an avid connoisseur of Chicken wings like the way most people enjoy a good steak, so I've been to quite a few Chicken places over the years. I hadn't been to Teds in about six years or so and decided to call a friend up and give it a shot. I remembering them having a decent quality of chicken back then. So we arrived and it was pretty quiet with only around 2 cars in the lot, so I said to myself well we should get our food quickly. We walked in and stood at the door for a while and no one seated us so after a few mins we found our own seats since the waitress was busy gossiping with her friend. The waitress from the start had a pompous attitude and you could feel it from half a room away from that she didn't want to be there. If I could have only recorded the negativity that this woman extruded it would have gone off the chart. When we placed our order she gave me several smirks and sighs especially when I asked during the order if she could bring some extra ranch when the order came out since only one 2 oz cup comes with $21 dollars worth of chicken. She rolled her eyes and gave me this look like we would be lucky to get a refill on our drinks. And then she said in the most sarcastic tone "Yeah but you're gonna pay for it ". This should have been a red flag to get up and leave right then and there. but I was starving and so was my friend. The place started to get a decent amount of customers. The wait went on for 58 mins from timing it because I had looked down at my phone for a text when the order was placed. What I couldn't figure out was how was everyone else getting their food first when we had been there the longest. I heard our waitress say out loud across the whole restaurant "that thank God it was time for her to get out of there" and she said it in the most belligerent kind of way. So seeing her walk out the door was a magnificent relief to my friend and I. The food came out looking delicious and smelling the same. I said a mini praise to the Lord for the next waitress who was kind and uplifting with a can-do attitude ready to help. The dining experience was feeling like it was elevating towards the positive, and then I took my first bite. I had ordered the ten wings suicide style like always when I had gone there. For those who don't know the "Suicide" sauce is a blend of spicy and hot, that's just right and leaves you coming back for more and your mouth watering for that next bite. Well to my surprise it wasn't what I had known for the countless number of times I had visited there my whole life. I was acquainted with that sauce and enjoyed it so much I would dunk my bread in it until it was all gone. This new sauce had no flavor what so ever, other than pure fire. I would compare it to previously having a mixture of just the right amount of sauces blended together. And this new sauce of having no complexity whatsoever and just being pure pepper ground up to make it just bland and so hot that my lips were swelling up and getting numb. Which is not a bad thing if the flavor can back up the heat. In this case though you had high heat with no flavor at all, and to make things worse is even though I paid out the rear for 6 tiny cups of ranch it wasn't enough because you could almost go through a whole cup of ranch with a single wing since the small 2oz cup was only about half full. I didn't order anymore because my ranch bill was already getting up there in price by this point. Another thing was I asked for rolls so I could calm down the heat some and was brought only one roll for this huge meal. I was just hungry so I kept going on with the meal, I noticed that the chicken wings had a lot of water in them since they were burned on the outside with chunks you couldn't bite into and then on the inside they had a lot of water coming out of them and soft on lots of the skin with slimy parts.. This made for a bad combination and this is not how you make chicken wings especially at a Chicken restaurant that happens to be their main course. My friend ate two of his wings and didn't want to finish them because of the taste of the chicken and texture of the skin, and they were barely edible. I had ordered a half chicken also but decided to take it with me because I had lost my appetite and my lips were numb with no taste-buds from the extreme heat and bad taste. I won't even mention the nasty truck stop type gas station around back I used to go and wash my hands in. Just follow the gravel path and you can't miss it. While the food is good, the wait is entirely too long. Whether they are busy or slow you will still wait at least 30 minutes for your food. Also if the waitress messes up your order they charge you the customer for the waitresses mistake. We placed our order and the waitress did not bring part of it. When we asked her about it she brought the rest of our order out and then charged us a second time for it. A terrible business practice. And the concept of the customer always being right does not apply at this establishment. I would only recommend eating there if McDonalds is closed..and then I would stop at a gas station and get a pack of cheese crackers. read more
