Ask the Community - John Joseph Coffee

    Do you serve pour-over coffee?

You bet they do. We have it all the time. Sensitivity to caffeine and health concerns caused us to go decaf which is prepared as a pour over method. Now I'll tell you I prefer the "press" method but pour over is just fine.

We stumbled upon Buttercream Bakery while in town for a basketball tournament. If the review were…read moresolely based on service and selection, it would be 5 stars, hard stop. The service was incredibly friendly, and amazingly fast, given we had a larger order and the place was fairly busy. There were plenty of options; from drink options/flavors, to bakery and breakfast items, etc. If you can't find something to order, that is completely on you because the choices are plenty. We opted for a couple of seasonal lattes, which were, unfortunately, very lacking in flavor. I typically order my coffee drinks half sweet, but this particular day I was wanting something sweet and flavorful so I skipped that directive, and was still disappointed. Bakery items and other drinks were good. There was some sort of market happening in the front of the store, which could have caused for more crowding/chaos elsewhere, but overall it felt like there was a lot of "stuff" everywhere. The seating area seems really crowded, but also didn't appear to have been cleaned in a while. There was a messy desk back by the bathrooms, and while I understand this is probably a busy work area for someone, it all just made me feel a little stressed out. Not a place I would feel relaxed to complete any work.

This year Buttercream Bakery offered sides and rolls for Thanksgiving. I ordered the Brussel sprouts, Squash, and a dozen rolls. I am so very happy with all of it! The squash was AMAZING!!! One of the other things I like is they have a Facebook page and you can order through Facebook messenger. Very convenient. I highly recommend Buttercream Bakery!

I always get cold brew, which has a wonderfully full taste and doesn't have that burnt flavor like the beans offered at inferior coffee spots. I absolutely love that they have coconut milk, which is rather unheard-of in most places. I can get my coffee here just as I would make it at home, which is made with Two Rivers' house-roasted beans of course! I do not however, have iced coffee ice cubes at my house as they do here. Um, AMAZING!! Talk about going the extra mile for their coffee people! Beyond the excellent coffee and accoutrements they have here, the place is tastefully and minimally decorated. It's perfect for bringing a friend to chat with or your laptop to get some work done. The best part: it's located in historic downtown Portage and is family owned and operated. It's owned by the nicest young couple of whom will be your friends in no time! These guys make it! Support this wonderful family and give the historic downtown your business by enjoying an absolutely superb cup of coffee! (Or three if you're anything like me.)

The barista jumped up when we walked in and greeted us warmly The almond joy is sweet, my husband said it's good. The cafe au lait is very weak and desperately needs another shot of espresso. When we got to the Vintage Brewing we had hoped to sit outside but everyone else had the same idea. It would have been a 20-30 wait so we chose to sit inside at one of their high tops. The area was in the bar and roomy we could see everything that was going on around the bar but kind of in the way of the thorough way of the kitchen where food came out and where they get their drinks from the bartenders. Our server walked by often so we received great service. I ordered the Rueben, it was delicious I'm so happy the have found another so close to home. The corned beef was thick, with just the right amount of juiciness, sauerkraut, thousand Island dressing and the best marble rye bread toasted perfect perfectly. I ordered straight fries well seasoned. I also ordered their homemade root beer, I'm not a fan. It tasted more like black licorice than root beer. I'd definitely go back and order visit its sister establishment in Madison on East Washington Avenue.

It is located along the Wisconsin River a short drive outside of Madison. Vintage Brewing is right on the river, giving the patio a really pretty setting. The patio is large and has a great spot for bands with plenty of tables for the audience. We decided to order dinner while we were there. I am not a beer drinker so I ordered the Wisconsinite ( a blackberry brandy old-fashioned). It wasn't bad, but definitely more on the sweet side than I care for. We shared the fried cheese curds, which had a great flavor, though not the best I've had. I really enjoyed my blackened salmon salad. The salmon was delicious and the salad was fresh. My husband also enjoyed his pulled pork sandwich. They had some fun swag for sale, and I came home with a cute pink t-shirt. All in all, Vintage Brewing is a cool place with beautiful location a great vibe. If you have a chance, catch The Sparks Band (a fun cover band).
